FEBRUARY 2013 ZUHRAH ARABIAN 3

From the Potentate

Greetings all,To say, being elected as the 119th

Potentate is an honor would be anunderstatement. I am honored, hum-bled, excited, and to be honest a lit-tle bit nervous. My predecessors andthe Nobility deserve the best I haveto offer, and my goal is to give 110%of my energy and passion to makeZuhrah Strong.

At the Annual meeting on January 11,2013, it was my pleasure to announcemy appointment of the new OuterGuard. I knew I wanted someone ofgood moral character, passionate aboutour Fraternity, dedicated, and depend-able.I know I found the right man in JonPavola. Please read his bio and intro-duce yourself to him the next time yousee him.

Installation of Officers:Congratulations to all of the new

officers of the many Units and Clubswhom I have been honored to installand help kick of their year. Over myyears of involvement with multipleMasonic organizations, I have beeninvolved in literally hundreds of installa-tions. Be it Blue Lodge, OES, Job’sDaughters, DeMolay, or Shrine, they allhave their own protocols, and rituals.Out of all of these, there is one part thatalways seems to strike a chord with me.

It is from the installation of theDeMolay Master Councilor, he isreminded “From the Ranks, you haverisen and to the Ranks you willreturn.” This is a simple reminder, asofficers of your respective Unit, Club,Lodge, Chapter, or Bethel, you wereonce a rank and file member, and yourmembers elected you to lead yourorganization.Once you have complet-ed your term, you will again be a rankand file member of your organization.

The 2013 Divan and I look for-ward to working with all of theUnits, Clubs, and committees for theensuing year.

2013By now you have received your

2013 Calendar packet. Please takesome time, review the calendar, andyou will notice several new events.Thethird Thursdays are Lunch at Elsie’s,5th

Friday Fun events, and more.We havea few pilgrimages: Spring Training inFort Meyers Florida; Imperial Sessionin Indianapolis, Indiana; Midwest ShrineAssociation Summer Session inDuluth; and New York City forThanksgiving. Also included in thispacket is a pin, which I hope you willwear as proudly as you wear your fez, letting everyone you know that youare proud to be a Shriner.

Also, included in your packet is awallet card that helps to introduce oneof our membership goals for 2013,recruiting Legacy membership. What isa Legacy? A Legacy is a male relative ofa Noble. It could be a brother, son, grandson, cousin, uncle, dad, etc.During the month of June we have sev-eral events planned for legacy activity. We will be encouraging Nobles toreach out to their legacies, invite themto these events and talk to them aboutjoining our great Fraternity. You mayhave talked to them before about join-ing,and they said,“Now is not the righttime.” Well, maybe now is the righttime. You will not know until you ask, right? We have special incentivesarranged for all legacy petitions sub-mitted during the month of June.

Monthly Themes:During 2013, we will have special

programs and activities scheduled tocoordinate with the theme for thatmonth. Such as,April in coordinationwith the Annual Grand LodgeCommunication, we will promote a“Back to Lodge Month.” We will beencouraging all Shrine Masons toattend either their home Lodge or aLodge near them.

Another monthly theme will beMay, where we will be honoring ourLadies. During October, we will behonoring our Masonic Youth Leaders.November will be honoring ourservice men and women, highlightedby a Military Table Lodge. Decemberwill be Hospital Month, where we willbe showcasing our Hospital System.

Membership:Zuhrah Strong is a new program

that will be rolled out at thePotentate’s Ball. This is a new pro-gram that we are going to focus all ofour membership efforts through.Thisis a long range plan developed by theMembership committee, and theDivan to ensure the ongoing growthof membership as we evolve ZuhrahStrong. The Divan and Membershipcommittee are dedicated to growingthe membership of Zuhrah. Not onlywith new members, but, also increas-ing our participation levels, and thestrength of our Units and Clubs.

May God bless the children in ourhospitals, may God bless the menand women who defend our bor-ders near and far, may God bless theUnited States of America, and mayGod bless you.

Until our Masonic paths crossagain,

Al NiederhausPotentate, 2013

Al Niederhaus, Potentate

ZUHRAH STRONG.The words youwill hear from the Zuhrah MembershipTeam this year is all about making our fra-

ternity stronger.Think about what being amember of Zuhrah has meant for you.Maybe it has provided you with a group

nobles Rick Ackerman, Larry Schoenhals, and DanPeterson, they were in charge of the RASC “Hard DurumWheat” pancake breakfast. They raised enough money forthe Twin Cities Shriners Hospital so that the hospital wasable to purchase a vein locator machine.

Noble Jim also found time to serve on the CompassLodge line. This year he is the Master of his lodge. Underhis leadership the lodge has completed several buildingalterations, and the installation of a mosaic black andwhite bordered, checkerboard pattern carpet. Work isalso proceeding on the installation of a new stairlift. Hisproudest moment however, required the support ofZuhrah Nobles Glen Miner and Tom Macload. Theyassisted the Worshipful Master as he shimmied up theflag pole on top of the lodge, to replace the flag cord.

Chief Rabban,AI Niederhaus has asked Noble Jim to bepart of the Zuhrah circus committee. Jim can’t help butwonder if his duties will include following the elephants.

Noble Jim’s youngest son, Tim, continues to activelypursue his business interests. We regret that last year Jim’sloving wife, Sue, succumbed to her battle with leukemia. All your brothers are sorry for your loss, Jim.

We Welcome you, Noble, to the Zuhrah WorkhorsePosse.

The

Workhorse

Jim LyonsNoble Jim Lyons has an inspiring philosophy: To be

able to participate and contribute to the Masonic fra-ternity is one of the world’s great opportunities.

It was 1982 when he was raised to the degree ofMaster Mason by his friend and Zuhrah Noble PatAnderson at Compass Lodge in Robbinsdale, Minnesota. He then joined the Scottish Rite and next the AncientArabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. It wasn’tlong after becoming a Shriner that a business opportuni-ty presented itself in Chicago. He moved his family to theWindy City where they lived for the next ten years. Hereturned to Minneapolis, and for the next several yearsbusiness ventures kept him busy traveling frequently.

In the year 2000, Jim’s oldest son Mike asked his dadabout becoming a Mason. A very proud father led hisson along the path that he had once followed, and itwasn’t long before the two of them joined theRobbinsdale area Shrine Club. (RASC).

Jim retired in 2006. Like so many retirees he couldn’tjust sit for long, so he pursued an interest in artistic oilpainting. That training came into good use when he and fel-low Zuhrah noble Tom Wolfe painted murals for the RASCcabana room at the Potentate’s Ball. He became the pres-ident of RASC in 2007-2008. He could always be depend-ed upon to participate in club activities.Along with Zuhrah

of friends and brothers with whom youcan enjoy a continued Masonic bond ofcamaraderie. Maybe it has provided youwith an opportunity to learn and show-case a talent as a member of one of themany performing and parade units ofZuhrah. And maybe it has provided youwith a family-friendly occasion to enjoy abit of fun at one of the many Zuhrah func-tions.Whatever your membership in ourfraternity has given you personally, youcan give to someone who could alsocherish great moments and memories.

All of us have someone in our lives withwhom we connect on a regular basis, andwith whom we could show the path tolight in Masonry, and membership in ourfraternity. What better gift could you give toyour son, your friend, a brother Masonfrom your Lodge, or someone who youfeel would be worthy of the opportunitythat exists in Masonry and Shrinedom.Weshould be living membership every day, andthat includes the opportunity to share theexcitement of membership with yourfriends and family. All we have to do is ask.

One good year will not continue toincrease the membership of our fraternity.Get involved, and help your fraternity grow.We guarantee you’ll never regret it.Withyour help,we can be ZUHRAH STRONG.

The Zuhrah Membership Team

4 ZUHRAH ARABIAN FEBRUARY 2013

ZUHRAH SHRINE UNITS

Once again we have progressedbeyond the first month of the New Yearand as a unit ZARC is holding its own. It isbelieved that we are progressing to thepoint where we have attracted moreinterest among the Zuhrah nobiles; thisappears exciting and certainly believable. We believe that there are many phases ofelectronics that can give us many combi-nations of interest. Our January meetingwas surely a good sign that we all sharesome ideas of interest. We had a goodturnout of nobles at our January session, and it appears that you do not need tobecome a ham radio operator to be ableto share the many phases of history bothpresent and past.Another noble was wel-comed, who attended our January meet-ing—Jim Schwanebeck. He was formerly aham radio operator with the call signKØJTU0. Notice, we believe that theresurely are more Zuhrah nobles out therewho would be interested in sharing thevarious phases of their background andhelp keep developing our ZARC unit intoone of interest. Now days there are somany new phases of science past, presentand future that there must surely be manyitems that can be shared and that are ofinterest.Google or Internet ideas show usnew ideas, but are not always your expe-riences and that is what ZARC is allabout. We are encouraging our membersto share their own ideas, and that is whatcan make it a good unit to belong to.

Let it be known that on December 18,2012,our ZARC unit had a visit from theblack camel—Donald N Carlson,KBØWV, had passed. Don was an out-standing Mason and very dedicated toour ZARC unit functions. He will besorely missed.

One of our ZARC members, TimFrance KTØTTF, brought to our meet-ing a newly-acquired 5 watt HFTransceiver in a newly-compact pack-age with a unique telescoping antenna.Upon examination it appeared veryimpressive as a show and tell item.

I was happy to hear one member’sinquiry as to when the ZARC unit beganas a part of the Zuhrah Shrine. It startedaround or about the year 1979 as a groupof nobles who were all Amateur Radiooperators. Those nobles were attentiveenough to feel that the Shrine Hospitalhad children who they believed should beable to communicate with their parentsby the means of ham radio. Those noblesgot the authorized signatures to start theproject so they all got their heads togeth-er to supply the appropriate Heath KitTransceiver assemblies to set up a hamstation at the hospital within a designatedarea, along with an appropriate rotarybeam type antenna. This is just a briefidea as to how the unit got started, and itproved to be quite successful. Now is thetime for our modern day nobles to pro-vide their own ZARC unit functions withbetter ideas and possibly find it enlighten-ing. I am convinced that there are certain-ly enough nobles out there who couldsubmit their ideas and make it a newer upand coming organization. Let it be saidthat we do not have to be ham radiooperators to belong to ZARC. Join Us!

The New Year ushers in many changesin leadership at Zuhrah, along with its var-ious units and clubs. Before moving for-ward, I want to acknowledge the hardwork, dedication, and incredible results ofthose who served us so admirably lastyear. First of all, Illustrious Sir Tony Krall’sleadership and focus on membershipbrought in more than 100 new Nobleslast year, and resulted in an annual net gainin membership for the first time in a gen-eration.This point cannot be overstated –Zuhrah experienced a net gain in mem-bership in 2012. Thanks Tony, for yourgreat leadership. You set the bar high forall the membership moving forward.

Two great leaders of the CeremonialUnit have also completed their stint atthe head of the respective divisions ofour Unit.Past Potentate John Andersen –the Great Dane – stepped up when theUnit needed leadership for our monthlybusiness and served as President… again.John provided reflections on the year inlast month’s column, and I would like toecho his comments that it was a fun yearand we appreciated the help of the manymembers who made it so. Many thanksto John for his leadership last year.

The reason for the existence of theCeremonial Unit is to perform the initia-tion ceremony of new members of theShrine. Historically, there are twoCeremonials – one in the spring and onein the fall; however, last year Zuhrah alsoheld a handful of mini or Lodge-basedCeremonials in addition to the Spring andFall Ceremonials. This made the job ofDirector General Ron Ward a lot moretime-consuming than had been the casepreviously. Ron deserves kudos from allof Zuhrah for his organizational abilities, dedication and results. Also, thanks to theDirector’s Staff and the members whoparticipated in the many Ceremonialsthat were conducted last year.

As we move forward, Zuhrah has anew Potentate, and to nobody’s surprise,Al Niederhaus was able to stave off ahard-fought challenge by Ron Paul tobecome Potentate of Zuhrah Shrinersfor 2013. Congratulations to Al and hislovely bride,Deb. Illustrious Sir Al has setan even loftier goal of 120 new Noblesfor this year. This means that we all needto continue, and even intensify, ourefforts to show upstanding men of goodcharacter what a fun organization the

Well, I suppose this issue of the Arabianwill reach your mailbox the day after thePotentate’s Ball. I hope all who attendedhad some fun times in “Hollywood.”

Not much happening with theChanters so far this year.We still have ourpractices on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdayof every month. We sure could use somemore singers to bolster our ranks.

Our congratulations go to our newIllustrious Sir Al Niederhaus, and ournew Outer Guard, Jon Pavola. It lookslike a lot of great things are planned forthis year, starting out with a MinnesotaTwins spring training jaunt to Ft. Myers,Florida. That would be a fun trip.

We lost one of our members to theBlack Camel last month. Brother KenLuikart joined the Celestial Lodge on the18th of December. Ken had been aChanter for 40 years. We also lost one ofour Great Ladies in January. MarieAckerman was one of our loyalChanterbelles, always ready to help out,and the hostess of our Christmas Partiesfor many years. She will be missed by allwho knew her. Our prayers reach out toJerry and his family.

On a brighter note, we have aBirthday Boy in February. Past Pres.Dave Frosig celebrates on the 12th. I’mpretty sure Nancy will bake him a cake.Happy Birthday, Dave—both verses.

That’s it for this month. We are alreadyinto February—“THINK SPRING.”

Shrine is, and of course introduce themto being a part of the great philanthropyin the world – supporting the ShrinersHospitals for Children.

The Ceremonial Unit will be headedagain this year by another of our pastPresidents, who has graciously stepped upto lead us. Tom Warnke very capablyserved as Unit President a few years ago,and will do so again this year. Please giveTom and his lovely lady, Heidi, your sup-port by participating in the fun activitiesthey have planned for the year. Tomalready gave us a heads up on one ofthem. Over the years, the CeremonialUnit has taken a small pilgrimage toChanhassen in the autumn to take in aproduction at the Chanhassen DinnerTheatre. This year’s play will be Hello Dolly.

But let’s not rush into the fall quiteyet. Depending upon when this issue ofthe Arabian hits your mailbox,we may bepreparing for the annual Potentate’s Ball,or recovering from the same. Thanks, inadvance, to the Ceremonial Unit mem-bers and Ladies, as well as the Legion ofHonor members and Ladies who shareour hospitality room at the DoubleTreein Bloomington for helping to make the“Sons of the Desert” room a smashingsuccess. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardywould be most pleased with the conven-tion in Chicago… I mean the trip toHawaii on doctor’s orders.

In addition to Pres.Tom,Ron Ward willbe First Vice President (unable to remaina has-been for long), and Greg Kaslowwill be Second Vice President. We appre-ciate Greg – who was Ceremonial UnitPresident 25 years ago – joining theranks of the soon-to-be two-timers.That’s two-timers as President, likeGrover Cleveland, not two-timers inanother way, like you know who. Servingas Secretary/Treasurer again this year willbe Jay Peterson. Jay has done a great jobfor the past few years taking care of ourbooks and administrative details and weappreciate his doing so again this year.

The other change in leadership is theDirector’s Staff. Mike Rudolph wasappointed Director General, and SteveNorthquest was appointed RitualDirector for this term. Director’s Staffappointments are two-year terms, whichmeans they will be busy and need our sup-port for the Ceremonials (including theLodge-based Ceremonials planned for thisyear) as well as the role we will have innext year’s Imperial Session in Minneapolis. Please give Mike and Steve your support inwhatever ways you are able.

The next Ceremonial Unit StatedMeeting will be on Tuesday, February19th, at the Golden Valley VFW, 7775Medicine Lake Road. Social Hour is at

6:00, followed by dinner and the meet-ing. Come see what activities Tom hasplanned for us as we move ahead in thenew year.

Nobles, as you contemplate what toget your special Valentine for theupcoming holiday for lovers, you maynot want to take your cue from Ole andSven. They were talking about what theywere getting their wives for Valentine’sDay. Ole told Sven, “Lena told me shevanted someting vith diamonds, so Ibought her a deck of cards!”

Wow… 2012 came and went so fast,my bike barely had time to warm up. Iwanted to thank the members of theCycle Corps for another great year.

We all love to ride, and it shows inthe dedication of these Nobles. Underthe Command of Captain (Clutch)Parker, we had a very busy and safeparade season.

We also retired one of the best,Noble George Holasek, with over twen-ty-two years of Cycle Corps service.George has been a huge part of this unit,a mentor in so many ways sharing hisexperience and showing us all what is tobe a proud member of the Corps—most important showing the new mem-bers the art of Pinning! It has been myprivilege and an honor to have road withhim. George will still be a big part of theunit, only from the side lines. Please joinme in a salute to George Holasek forhis years of service.

And looking forward to another funa safe parade season for 2013.

FEBRUARY 2013 ZUHRAH ARABIAN 5

ZUHRAH SHRINE UNITS

The month of February is a busy timefor the Zuhrah Pipes & Drums. Themonth kicks off with Zuhrah’s HollywoodClassics Ball, on February 1st through the3rd. Join us as the Pipes & Drums partiesin Hollywood style on Friday and per-forms for the masses on Saturday evening. For those with a penchant for staying uplate, the annual late night performance ofthe Pipes & Drums in the Potentate’sroom provides for an enjoyable musicalinterlude. While this performance is typi-cally followed by a toast to the band, thecunning shown by Illustrious Sir Al, duringthe installation of the officers of the Pipes& Drums almost changed this tradition. The Potentate’s Ball is also a great time toinvite friends, and potential candidates tosee some of the pageantry and fun thatZuhrah is known for.

The month of February ends as alwayswith the Midwest Pipe Band Association’sFargo Training Session, which will be held,as of this writing, on February 22ndthrough the 24th, in Fargo, NorthDakota. Once again all of the Pipe Bandsin the Midwest will converge on thefrozen Fargo area for a weekend ofcamaraderie, piping and drumming edu-cation, and a bit of fun. Saturday morning, the lads will be at the Fargo MasonicCenter for a full day of concentrated pip-ing & drumming instruction under thetutelage of a few world class instructors. This world class instruction allows us tocontinue to hone our skills as pipers &drummers, and become a better band.Following our instructional seminars, thelads will enjoy a sumptuous dinner at theEl Zagal Shrine Center, prior to boardingour bus to barnstorm some of the finerestablishments in the Fargo area. It willonce again prove to be another grandadventure for the Pipes & Drums.Additional information on the FargoTraining Session will be provided as thedetails are finalized, both by our bandSecretary, and at band practice.

Pretty much every Monday night in2013 is band practice night down at theMinneapolis Scottish Rite. Piping anddrumming instruction for the newestNobles in the band occurs prior to fullband practice, as scheduled with yourinstructor. Full band practice as directed

This starts with some somber newsabout a long time Drum Corps memberand Brother, Herb Mjolsness. Herb had

not played actively formany years, but heused to stop up forMonday night prac-tices at the MPLSTemple. He was oftenworking up a game ofpool, Benny andGeorge often playedwith him. I would see

him just grinning from ear to ear if he hadconvinced a new guy to play. I am confi-dent it was not just the pool; he liked tobend your ear with stories… He was the

by the Major’s begins promptly at 7:00p.m. No doubt our concentration forpractice this month is for the upcomingFargo Training Session, and will be at theforefront, but we will also be cognizant ofthe quickly approaching St. Patrick’s Dayparade & performance on March 17th.Monday night practice provides us withan opportunity to improve our band, andis an important part of being a memberof the Pipes & Drums.

Monday night band practice also pro-vides an opportunity for new Nobles ofZuhrah, who may be interested inbecoming a part of the grand traditions ofthe Zuhrah Pipes & Drums, to comedown and meet the members and learn abit more about the band. Contact one ofthe members of the Pipes & Drums, orcontact our Drum Major Jerry Oliver, whose number appears in the Pipes &Drums advertisement somewhere in thisissue of the Arabian. We can only promiseyou a bit of fun, grand camaraderie, andthe ability to learn one of the world’smost misunderstood instruments,or oneof the many types of drums that we play.

It truly is a great time to be a mem-ber of the Zuhrah Pipes & Drums.

Until next month… Cluich Le CeolBinn (Play the sweet music) Mac

I thought everyone at Zuhrah wouldlike to read the Patrol’s Year in Reviewwritten by our Captain Bill Ashbeck.

Thank you, Bill, for writing this.Tim Thorbus. President of the PatrolOur parade routes took us to five

locations. Northeast Parade spon-sored by Richard Hunt’s funeralChapel... Wayne Miller provided ustransportation at the end of theparade. Many members with healthproblems did participate. Ron Hechsel,Rob Rannow did march very well. Ronwas happy to see the end of theparade route. We netted $100.

Gary and Terri Sibben hosted a verynice party for the Patrol at theirhome. We had five past Captains at theevent. Thanks, Gary and Terri. We metJustin Sibben’s new child, Dawn.

Mendota Day’s parade: This parade isthe John and Barb Benson parade. TheBenson’s went out of their way to makean excellent Oasis. The cooks were Julieand Todd Stowell. Many older Patrollerscame to the event just for social hour andget caught up with friends. Thanks to Johnand Barb Benson who provide so muchsupport of the Patrol. They provide stor-age of all Patrol material. Barb Benson iscurrently recovering from hip surgery.Thiswas Ron Hechsel best excuse for notmarching. He got in the Benson truck forthe ride to start of Parade. Ron was soexcited that he split his pants getting outof the truck. He was not gong to marchback with a split pants but walked back onthe side lines. Thanks again, Jack, for theguidance;Nancy Annett was there to pro-vide support. Thanks again, Nancy, forcoming. John Benson wrote the Patrol acheck for $100 for our efforts. It wasone of our finest hours— Jack developednew moves for the parade. I witnessedtrue kindness by several Patrollers; twoor three members helped a PastPotentate’s daughter position her fatheron the Parade route. John Benson madea special trip to march with us.

Marshall Parade: Excellent parade, again Jack Annett developed newmoves that worked very well. Pricewas right. We had great hospitality onthe bus and at a Masonic Lodge. Coldweather, nice people Thanks to all.

only guy I knew who could give JerryPiper a run for his money on stories.Herb had been part of our Color Guard, but I had to dig deep to discover whatrole Herb played other than pool-shark,but soon discovered he was a cymbalplayer for many years. Rest in peacebrother and enjoy the pool.

Our brother Harry Bassett has finishedwith his battle against cancer. He was verybrave in his battle; he walked a straight

path against it andnever wavered in hisfight. He is spendingtime with family andfriends in his remain-ing days. I was fortu-nate enough to seehim a few days agoand spent some time

with him.The old Harry was still inside, hewas barking orders, telling us all “Not toscrew it up!” He was still full of wit andsharp tongue, after talking to him, I amdone with you, then grabbed the nextguy… Many of us hope to see him again, but if not,he knows we will be thinking ofhim often. He is the kind of guy you can-not forget; he will always be rememberedby his friends. Please keep him and his fam-ily in your thoughts and prayers.

As we try to “Not Screw it Up,” weare continuing to work on music for thePote’s Ball. Henry has been working thehorn section and Ryan with percussion. As I write this, we have only two moreMonday nights before show time.

Captain Mike is working to secure aparade schedule for us and we hope to beactive this year with some new membersin the line. Look for up to date informa-tion on our Facebook page Zuhrah DrumCorps and add us to your friends list.

Please remember we have a couple ofmembers and their families battling cancer, with serious medical hurdles ahead ofthem. Some of you have danced with it andknow the dance can get rough, so taketime to keep these guys in your thoughtsand prayers…

The Chairmen: We celebrate themusic, the style, and the generosity ofthe Rat Pack era.

Good tidings to one and all. This pastmonth saw little movement among theinhabitants of The Chairmen den. Someof this was due, no doubt, to the distrac-tions and interruptions caused by theChristmas holidays but also, we’re sure,to the waning inclinations of even themost ardent cigar smokers to brave theMinnesota wintry weather for even a fewpuffs from their chosen cherished che-roots. Nonetheless, some members ofthe den ventured forth this past monthfor an outing at the Dan Aitken’s houseto plan The Chairmen’s HospitalityRoom at this year’s Potentate’s Ball.

In a related note,The Chairmen final-ly took possession of the ZuhrahHospitality Room Trophy earnestly wonat the 2012 Potentate’s Ball.Apparently, the original traveling trophy went miss-ing in Zuhrah’s move from Park Avenueto its office in Fridley. However, itsreplacement has been acquired and hasbeen appropriately presented to thegroup, albeit a bit tardy.

Greetings to my fellow Joeys andBrother Nobles all. I, Jitters, write to youas your newly-installed (or againinstalled) Director. Once again, you aresubject to my whims and my fancy, whichare neither whimsical nor fancy. Rather, expected and mundane. Fortunately, they have a cream for that…

Our installation was a great successthanks to our Fearless Leader Korky andthe Divan. I thank you all for your hardwork and dedication to the Order andto the Funsters. We presented someawards that night to a few of the chil-dren who have, over the past years, helpto make our parades and our circuses alittle better. I would like to thank KatieG, Brad G, Jacob G, Jack C,Thomas C,Emma C,Lauren C,Gavin N, Jonathan G,and Ryan M for your willingness to be aclown and to help promote the idealswe, as Funsters, strive to hold true.

I would also like to thank all of ourLadies who not only encourage ourhobby, but also help out in more waysthan I have column inches to describe. We couldn’t do it without your support.Thank you.

I sit here writing for the month ofFebruary and we by now have gonethrough the Pote’s Ball (or very nearlyso). I expect us to have had a wonderfultime seeing old friends and making newones. I want to thank everyone whomade the two nights a success, and I tipmy nose to you.

I’ve always known I wanted to besomebody, but now I realize I shouldhave been more specific.

Our summer schedule will start tofill out soon, so please be ready forour parade season. I will start bringingthe sign-up sheets to our meetings assoon as we start having interestedcommunities contact us. If you have anidea for a parade to do this year, pleaselet me know. If you have the contactinformation, please send it my way [email protected].

Our monthly meetings are still beingheld on the second Monday of eachmonth at 7 p.m. at the hospital. Contactme or one of your fellow clowns if youneed help getting there. We would love to

see you there.Remember,or meetings arewhere we decide things and our paradesare where we make those things happen.

A kid will run any errand for you, ifyou ask them at bedtime.

A common question I am asked aboutis how to we get more members to ourUnit. I don’t know that I have a goodanswer for them. I know that oncesomeone puts on the make-up and thecostume, 99% of the time, they gethooked on playing the part. The twoquestions that come from that are; howdo we get people to put on the nose, and how do we keep them interested inwhat we are doing? I would like every-one to think on these questions, and let’scome up with some answers. We cangrow our Unit, but we will all have to putin some effort.

I am looking forward to the 2013season and I hope to see you all outone the street.

Good night and joy be to you all.

ZUHRAH SHRINE CLUBS

The January meeting got our year offto a good start. About 40 members &ladies attended as did our Divan liai-son, Verl Raap and Lady Jeanna. Themeeting room we originally reservedturned out to be too small so The FallsCafé moved us to an open area of therestaurant… overall it went prettywell, and Lois Downs took home thedoor prize—a bottle of Irish Crème.

We received two thank you cards, onefrom – now Jr. Past Potentate Tony (&Bev) Krall for the AASC support and onefrom Marge Anderson and the ShrineHospital Auxiliary. She thanked us for thethree bags of toys and gifts for use at theShriners Hospital here in Minneapolis.

Verl performed the installation of ournewest officer, John Heimke as VicePresident. As is the case with most meet-ings held in a restaurant the noise levelhampers communications, but there wasan attempt to encourage members tojoin us at The Ball.At this point we havetwo full tables.

It was decided in November that wewould not be part of room judging con-test. Instead we would support the themeHollywood Classics. We will have/had amovie lobby on our Cabana veranda.Fresh popcorn, soft drinks, candy, etc.

Our February meeting will be onthe 12th at Billy’s (on Jackson Street)in Anoka. Normal times, between 5 &5:30 social starts, main room betweenthe Jury Room and basement stairwell.Start ordering dinner at 6’ish, invoca-tion and meeting between until dinneris served. Kabitzing ‘til you feel likeleaving. Our new VP will preside.

OwatonnaCHANGE – Be Ready

When was the last time you changedclothes? A change is coming on April 7.No,the base of our 65-year-old recipe willnot change. The noble purpose of thosefour-inch Hard Durum wheat pancakesremains the same—to get monies for ourHospital. But, the location will change.

Our next breakfast will be at theCrystal Community Center on April 7.The location is 47th Avenue North andDouglas Drive in Crystal. To do your part, plan to give out;hand out or stand on thestreet and command people to come into the breakfast. (Quote? from the greatbanquet given by a householder.)

Be sure to read our January newsletterto learn how much those Pancakes didfor our philanthropies. And, finally, brethren, whatever is right and pure, thinkon those things and be ready for ourchanges on April 7th.

News from Zuhrah Annual MeetingTony Krall had a great year, adding 102

new (some young) Nobles. As of January, our membership is 2301 strong, com-pared to last January of 2300 members.Tony found new and innovative ways ofadding members, using new ways tosolve membership problems. Let’s getcreative and make RASC stronger.

At Zuhrah, because of frugality and astrong Circus, the financials are showinga net of approximately $58,000 ormore. The Transportation Fund balanceis over $27,000.

Our own Al Niederhaus was installedas Potentate and will be assisted by aDivan that will be very effective for 2013.Jon Pavola is the new Outer Guard.

On another note, Zuhrah will host aKentucky Derby Party the first part ofMay. Watch your Arabian for details. The Circus date is set for Thanksgivingweekend in 2013.

Would you like to get together withother Zuhrah members? On the thirdTuesday of each month, there will be aget together at Elsie’s at 729 MarshallStreet Northeast, just across the rivernear the Plymouth Avenue bridge.

Stated meeting in February will beon February 15th at the Dan PatchAmerican Legion Hall in Savage,Minnesota. Call the Zuhrah office tomake dinner reservations.

Pres.Tom asks,“Have you broughtin your new member to the WestSuburban SC yet?”

If there is one positive thing for theWSSC president when he writes hisown column, it’s that he doesn’t have anyexcuse for not knowing what is goingon. So that’s my shtick this year: you’rehearing it from the horse’s mouth.

Our February luncheon will be at theHopkins VFW—as is normal—onWednesday 20 February with the boardmeeting at 11:00, social 11:30, and lunchabout 12 noon. The meal will be theVFW’s delicious baked chicken. Ourown Marlow Noren will be the pro-gram. Marlow was a firefighter for theCity of St. Louis Park for 30 years andwill tell us some of his experiences as afirst responder in one of our oldest andlargest suburbs. I know I speak for all ofus when I say thank you, Marlow, and Ilook forward to your talk.

Which is a good segue into a few ofmy plans for the year. Several of ourspeakers this year will be our members. As I’ve gotten to know my fellowNobles I have become fascinated withtheir wealth of experience. I believe youwill be, too.Why look elsewhere whenwe have great depth among us?

A second objective for the year willbe membership. We’ll develop this withour Board of Directors. This month I willask them how we can expand a bit. I’llreport on this as it happens.

Welcome, Jerry Johnson, to theBoard. Jerry is the first new boardmember in several years, and it is myhope we can find some other newbieswho will share in the dance.

Congratulations, Lew Sampson, our2012 Noble of the Year. Lew has beenhonored for his many years publishingthe monthly newsletter. How manyyears, Lew, have you done this chore?Lew has passed the baton to 1/2Scribe Marlow Noren.

If you missed the annual New Year’sDay Breakfast at the Patch, you missedour table. We had a WSSC table withextra chairs squeezed in. Fun! I think JimEwald managed to eat more oysters thanI. I only had three cups; I think I countedJim with five, and I don’t know how manyhe had before joining our table. That’s tenoysters per cup.Who claims more?

Happenings in Zuhrah and sur-rounds: the Pote’s Ball,The HollywoodClassics Ball, which will be about thetime this Arabian is delivered, 1-3February.The monthly Stated Meeting, this month 15 February at the Patch. And one of my favorites, the MoundLodge Annual Roast Beef Dinner,Sunday 17 February, 11:00 to 1:30 atthe Mound American Legion (ask PP AlKramer for tickets, or buy them at thedoor). As always check the Arabian forevents. And don’t miss out.

We had a great turnout for ourJanuary meeting, forty plus in attendance. The fish was excellent as always and theAquavit was oh so tasty. Donna Wallickdid a wonderful job selling the 50/50 tick-ets. She raised $80 for the lucky winner. And speaking of the lucky winner, it wasnone other than Jack’s granddaughter, andthe person who drew the winning ticketwas none other than Jack’s daughter(mother of the granddaughter). Nothinglike keeping it in the family Jack! Jack’sgranddaughter is in collage, so I’m sureshe can put an extra eighty bucks to gooduse. The big question is will she show upto sell tickets at our February meeting.

The rest of our Torsk meetings will bethe first Wednesday of the month, withsocial hour starting at 5:30 and dinnerbeing served at 6:30. Please call JackBeaver at 763-544-3834 or 763-234-6068with your reservations or if you have anyquestions. On behalf of all the Torsk mem-bers and guests, I would like to thank Jackfor his leadership and all the work he doesto keep Zuhrah’s Torsk Club going strong.Next Torsk meeting will be February 6th.See you there!

As we head into this year pleaseremember at all times our children ofthe Shrine Hospital that make each of usso proud to be a Shriner. As we get outin our communities it becoming moreand more common to have our neigh-bors come up to us and tell a story ofsome child they know and their experi-ence with our hospital. It is heart warm-ing to visit with these people and see theglow in their face from these stories.Aswe venture out in our communities,

BirakGreetings and a Happy New Year to

all. Normally my new V.P. Ken Carlsonwould be writing this, but because Iwill soon be #1 XX El presidente ofMVSC in 2013 I felt I should write thefirst article of the year. Ken, said noproblem with me doing it.

Let’s begin. As I write this article, Iknow we will have 3 or 4, and hopefullymore new members joining us on the24th at our stated meeting. I’m so proudof you guys recruiting and bringing inthese poor lost souls that have been mis-led, fooled into joining or left out of otherunits or clubs with in Zuhrah Shrine. Now they will enjoy the overwhelmingprivilege of belonging to MVSC.You peo-ple keep up the good work.

As president of MVSC for the yearof 2013, I’m going to declare this theyear of rebuilding the membership inour club. I want to challenge you mem-bers to bring in to our organizationone new member a month. And let usnot forget our present members whohave been reluctant to come to ourmeetings. Let’s get them on boardonce again.

I hate to be the one to bring you thebad news, but when you read this it willhave taken place. Ever since 2002 and2003 when I became Presidente ofZuhrah’s most modest Drum and BugleCorps, I have had my close and personalfriend,Tom Lutgen, as my Chief of Staff. He has held that position for the lasteleven years. We have had our ups anddowns, and, yes, I have had to disciplinehim a few times in these years. Now isthe time for us both to move on, at themeeting on the 24th of January.Tom, willbe no more. I had hoped to appoint mygood friend, Rich Lyons, to this post, buthe is soon to be moving up in the ladderof success and will have more than hisshare of responsibilities in the nearfuture. For you who do not know this,Rich is the one in the year 2000,when hewas president of MVSC, that got me intothis mess. Now that I have scratchedRich from my list, right beside his name,

The holidays are over, the credit cardstatements are due soon, and it is time tostart a great new year for Zuhrah Shrineand our Clubs and Units. As we look backat 2012, Zuhrah had a great year andBloomington Area Shrine Club also had agreat year with two successful breakfasts, many community and Shrine activities, and just enough social activities to main-tain the balance of work and pleasure.

BASC’s annual installation of new offi-cers is behind us.The Club elected: RichDohrmann, President; Svenn Borgersen,Vice President; Jack Aldridge, Secretary;and Phil Bemis, Treasurer. Potentate AlNiederhaus, installed these elected offi-cers plus a full complement of Boardmembers for the coming year at ourJanuary installation. Past Potentate BillPeterson,a friend of the Dohrmann fam-ily, assisted Al in installing Rich and theother 2013 leaders. We enjoyed havingseveral widows of Shrine members withus at our installation and look forwardto including our Shrine Ladies in many ofour social and community activates. Ilook forward to serving BASC andZuhrah in 2013.

was my friend, who helped me throughout my year as V.P. and is married to thatbeautiful girl named Cindy, and as on the24th of January 2013 my good friend andone of the most knowledgeable peoplein MVSC Phil Garbe. He will be my newChief of Staff. I welcome him aboard andhe will be my right and probably my lefthand man, during my Presidency year.

This is going to be a fantastic year forMVSC with our new line, and in havingDerrel Dalagar, stepping up to take theposition of Secretary and with our newdirectors,Dave Culbert and Rich Lyons, and all the new and old members.Whata banner year we are going to have..

A short note: When I told Tom hewas no longer my chief of staff a smalltear came to my eye.

XX El PresidenteBob Radebach

please take the time to answer all ques-tions the people of our community askof us. Remember no matter where wego these eyes are always on us, so act asif the camera is on us at all times.

My new year’s resolution is to reachout to our fraternity and do a littlemore than last year. When problemsoccur try to help out for the good ofthe order, always. Remember if you arenot helping with the problem, you justmight be a part of it.

Always keep the patients, doctors, nurses, staff, and shriners of our greatphilanthropy in your prayers. With thatalso our country’s leaders, Zuhrah’sleaders, and all that make this the great-est country in the world. God bless theUSA.As Shriners, we look beyond our-selves to serve the needs of others, especially children who cannot helpthemselves. We believe ShrinersHospitals to be the world’s greatestphilanthrophy, and we covenant witheach other to support its “temples ofmercy” with spirit, time, talent andmeans.
