!

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving with their families and friends and are gearing up for the Christmas season and looking forward to another New Year.It was a great time getting together with the Yoshi’s

in Jamestown. We met at the Elks for some food and drinks and to talk about the coming year with our new President, Richard Pallay III, taking over. I am wishing him the best. If you are looking for something to do, the Yoshi club is a great start.Everything is in order for the 2nd Annual El Zagal Gun Show this weekend, November 18 &19.

Roger and crew have things going their way and are ready for another great event. This helps our building and grounds. If your unit or club is looking for the best places or want suggestions or ideas on contributing to the “Parade to Glory” let me know or call the office. We can answer any questions you may have.I hope to see you all at the Adult Christmas Party, which includes an ALL YOU CAN EAT SNOW CRAB FEED; at El Zagal Temple on December 9. The ticket price is $25 per person and must be purchased in advance; ONLY AVAILABLE at the office or the Arabian Room.I can’t believe how the time has gone by. It just seems like 2011 was not that long ago when I was asked to join the line by PP Ron Beck. Now, here I am writing my last Camel Tales article. WHOO! What a ride I have had. I have met so many great people and had the time of my life. The support everyone has shown me is what the Shrine and GREAT FRIENDS are all about. I said to myself when I got appointed to the line, “I don’t want this to just be a short friendship as I am serving, but to build lifelong friendships”. I believe we are heading in that direction. El Zagal has a great Divan and the Nobility and Ladies are having fun. It has been an honor to serve as your Potentate for 2017. It was 32 years ago when I joined the Shrine. My dad, then Potentate Howard Wrigley, was in the same position I am in today. What an honor to have walked in his shoes and followed in his footsteps. .I did not make it to every unit or club meeting but I did get to all the areas for one event or another. And you can’t say we are not having good times in El Zagal. There is a lot of fun to be had and people to meet. Just look at the calendar for upcoming events and go meet the members of another unit or club in YOUR Shrine. I express a special thanks to you Lisa, for everything you have done for me the last 7 years. YOU are the very BEST!!!! Thank you to all who participated this year. I hope you got the most out of your membership. You can look for more great things to come in the future from your El Zagal. I feel I left the Shrine a better place as I complete my term. I might have a couple of I O U‘s for Rocky. Just remember, it is all where you hide the Easter eggs.I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and hope you have a great time with family and friends please travel safe. With that said, the main thing to do is “PARTY”CIPATE IN 2017

Thank You for everything!Yours in the faith, Blake H. Wrigley 2017 Potentate

As 2017 ends we give thanks for a great year. We were able to give approximately $15,000 in cash and merchandise to the Twin Cities Shriners Hospital for Children in 2017. A huge thanks to each and everyone; well done Auxilians.      Our annual Christmas Party was held  December 2nd at the Hilton Garden Inn, Fargo.  It is always special to share food and fellowship with fellow Auxilians. Each one brings a gift for the children at the hospital and it is delightful to watch the true meaning of Christmas as we gather them together.      Our January meeting is  Saturday the 13th, 2018 at the Shrine. We will do our membership mailing and checking our year’s schedule of activities.      From all of us, we wish you and your family a Happy Holiday Season and a wonderful New Year.     Remember the circle of Friendship never ends.

Twin Cities Shrine Hospital UpdateAn Honor & Privilege to Serve A Most Rewarding Experience

December marks the end of my term on the Twin Cities Shrine Hospital Board of Governors. It has been an honor and privilege to serve on this board. I owe a thank you to all of you for supporting our Twin Cities Shrine Hospital.

A big thank you to the Auxiliaries and various units and clubs that purchased or donated toys, blankets, prom dresses and other items to our shrine patients. I had many trips to the hospital for our monthly meetings that I felt I was a driver making a delivery for Toys-R-Us.

Pop top tabs. I wish I had kept record of how many pounds of tabs that I delivered from El Zagal to our Shrine Hospital. It seemed that every trip I had a trunk full of tabs to deliver. I had the honor of delivering 1,000,000 tabs placed in six 30 gallon drums as part of a Valley City elementary school project. All funds received from the sale of tabs go to purchasing wheelchairs.

There is a soft spot in my heart for the Missouri Slope Shrine Club in Bismarck. Without the efforts of these Shriners and their ladies there would not be an Off Premise Shrine Patient Clinic in Bismarck. This Clinic saves the parents and patients the expense and time of traveling to the Cities for their examination. The Clinic is held every spring and fall and involves over 60 patients each time. As a bonus, a screening clinic is held at the same time and we usually accept 15 or more new Shrine patients.

We are fortunate to have a great group of Hospital representatives working for El Zagal. There have been almost no problems with our patients or complaints from the hospital during the ten years that I have served on the Board of Governors. I suspect a large part of us having no problems is because of our organized and efficient Temple Office Secretary Lisa Johnson.

I have had the opportunity to see kids walk that were told they would never be able to walk. Children coming in with severe spine curvature almost perfectly straightened out. There are so many miracles occurring at our Shrine Hospitals. It is all possible because we have a dedicated hospital staff that makes us as Shriners look good.

Thank you again for allowing me to have this most rewarding experience as a member of the Board of Governors.

Drunk Dash Makes Significant ContributionDustin and David, founders of the Drunk Dash Fundraiser, present a check to El Zagal for the Hospital Transportation Fund for $4,360. – 3 X MORE than last year -- Over 200 participated in the event and a great time was had by all. We want to thank them for their support by keeping El Zagal as their fundraiser and hope to continue in the future. Look for this event again next year. I thank the Nobles and ladies who took part in this year’s event.

Color Guard CrooningsWell, all the turkeys are back in their cages here in Lakes Country, the Color Guard short bus is put safely away, and we are ready for the holiday’s to come.

Most of the snow birds have left for their winter huts now, with the exception of Brad Richards. It seems he took his Lady Barb on a cruise recently – you know the kind, one of those honeymoon nudist cruises. Barb told me that she had a craving for fresh lobster one day, and thought she could just lower Brad down to the ocean floor to grab a couple for her. All was fine until she went to find a place to tie him up at. I understand that Brad’s “rope” was a bit too short to make a full knot. She had to settle for Ramen noodles I guess.

We are in the middle of a brisk election cycle here in Detroit Lakes again, and the political promises are a flyin! They are lined up to be President of the Color Guard – the BEST DAMN UNIT IN EL ZAGAL, clear around the block! Even Jake Meszaros has been seen campaigning. I did figure out tho that campaigning gives Jake a reason to go and hug all the ladies. Wise man that Jake – he will go far in politics. Just wait until they start digging into those skeletons in his closet!!

The Color Guard has a new raffle with tickets available now for only $10! We are giving away a brand new off road go cart, complete with tires and all! Ian Somerville will do the fire up when we get close to raffle time, and promised he won’t even put a turbo charger on it! Can you say Christmas

gift??? We had to reset the GPS guidance system tho, cause Greg had the dang thing set to find the Frazee Liquor Store. Not too sure that would go over well with parents!

The Color Guard also plans on attending the El Zagal Christmas Party, and see what kind of cook ol Dave Rott is. I understand he will be cooking up Snow Crab for the group. We plan to attend to see if Dave actually works, or if he will be sitting at the bar with his “Crown”, if you know what I mean!

The Gaming Manager for the Color Guard, Craig Fontaine, came back from hunting with the most interesting story. He claims he saw Bigfoot up in the woods. He even took a picture for proof. After studying the photo, we realized that he simply caught Mike Kunz coming back in from the woods with his wool stocking cap on. But boy, Mike DOES have big feet! Craig stated that between the size of the feet, the furry head and the rank smell, he was sure he captured Bigfoot. Next time Craig….

We would consider it an honor if you would join us for a meeting sometime. After all, we are the BEST DAMN UNIT IN EL ZAGAL!! Meetings are the 3rd Monday of the month, and you don’t even have to be naked! Join us for the fun, stay because your car got towed! Remember, it’s a great time to be a Shriner, but there is NOTHING FINER THAN A COLOR GUARD SHRINER!

Happy Holidays!Lars

Mandan Indians Enjoying the Holiday Season

Well, it is time again to let you know what the Mandan Indians are up to. We have had our buckskins on a lot the past few months; putting on the EA degree. This is OK with us. We need to bring in new Masons, many of us are old now.

You know, one of our Chiefs is going to be 90 years young. Chief Boyd Gilchrist; one of the best.

Now what I meant to say last month about bringing your wife to the lunch on Friday at the Amvets. If you are from Fargo, Jamestown, etc. and happen to be in town on Friday with your wife, she is welcome to “com’n down” for lunch too.

Now don’t forget that on December 15 is when we have free Tom & Jerry’s. And yes we will also have our famous Shrine fried chicken.

Thanksgiving is coming. Be careful to not eat too much turkey. And I hope to see you all at the Christmas parties that the Lodges have.

December is when we turn the lights out at Steele Lodge. We are dark until April.

It is time to strike the teepee. You will hear from me again next month.

Chief MatoEdward J C Dockter

Bismarck DustersNew Officers Installed, Ready to Roll In 2018

The Dusters are alive with all cars in gear!  Our Scribe Bob (Post) Johnson and wife have departed for southern climes which has been their habit for a few years. Our numbers will continue to decline with other snowbirds joining them soon! The Dusters have been busy this past year and look forward to another year of keeping things in “gear”.  At our monthly meeting on Monday we had our new slate of officers installed by Duster (Past Potentate) Jay Buringrud doing the honors.  The officers are Kim Lewis, President; Bob Bartosh, Vice-President; Tim Dawson, Secretary; and Travis Will, Treasurer. Thanks for stepping up guys. We also had thank you cards from Carol Simmers and Jackie Pfliger who received flowers from the Dusters for recent surgeries. It was reported that both are doing well. The other Dusters or wives undergoing recovery are either OK or receiving treatment.  We hope to have all of them well and back to health soon. It was further reported by President Kim that Duster

officers plus Bob Simmers will serve as a committee to handle planning for the 2018 fall ceremonial to be hosted by the Dusters. Kim asked for volunteers to help with the planning.  Events scheduled for the rest of the year are the monthly Social on November 16,  pancake breakfast and circus meeting in Mandan on  November 18, Duster Christmas party on  December 9, and all-Masonic Holiday party on December 12. As we roll into 2018, we expect to have a good number of Dusters at the annual meeting on January 5 and 6. We would be remiss if we didn’t take this opportunity to thank Blake (Ringo) Wrigley for his year as Potentate. He did a great job. As an El Zagal unit, we hope him well in the future! So as we prepare for 2018, keep ‘em rollin’…. rollin’….rollin’.

Jamestown MysticsFun & Fellowship Warms the Winter

Greetings Nobles and friends. Winter is here. You’d think we have nothing to do but that’s not the case. Besides spreading cheer and goodwill wherever we go, we’ve got some activities too.

We had the Christmas parade down Main Street in Jamestown on  November 25th.  Last running of the karts for 2017.  It was chilly but sooo much fun. The kids just love us; dishing out high-fives and candy. They probably just wanted the candy but I like high-fives. No injuries were reported. Strange.

“Trip on a tankful” rests for no season. We will be heading to the Fargo Temple December 9th for the crab feed!  That’ll be a blast.  A bunch of Shriners whacking crab legs with a hammer.  I hope I remember to take video. It’ll be cool to meet Shriners from other units as well. I love crab legs!

The Mystic Christmas party is slated for December 30th  at Shady’s.  That’ll be a great time.  Everyone gets dressed up and dons their fez. Some handsome fellas. -- Some.

It’s good for the community to see us out there as well.  Another opportunity to recruit men of high character. Plus Shady’s is always fun. Thanks Andrea!

Last, but certainly not least, the gun raffle tickets are here!  WooHoo!  One of our best fundraisers.  Only 400 tickets sold. 20 sweet guns. You’ve got some time to grab a ticket but not much, they go quick. This is the year I win one, I can feel it. If you would like to buy one get a hold of a Mystic, we’ll hook you up.

That is all for now. The Mystics would like to wish each and every one of you a fantastic holiday. You’ve earned it.  Good times ahead with family and friends.  Thank you for being Shriners and don’t forget to recruit! God BlessSincerely,Jamestown Mystics

Provost GuardIt Will Change Your Life

The Provost Men of November had yet another busy month. Not only did we continue to be the envy of the Detroit Lakes Color Guard, but we also had several events.

The month started off with the Provost Monthly meeting on November 2nd. We had 21 members in attendance that witnessed the magic happen. Magic, as in the significant planning and preparation, that was completed for the following events.

November 18th and 19th was a busy weekend for the Provost Guard. We hosted Saturday Burgers, and provided security for both days of the 2nd Annual EZ Outdoors Unlimited Gun Show.

Tuesday, November 21st, the Provost also provided resources for the Holiday Lights parade in Fargo/Moorhead. This parade gets bigger every year and the Provost were out in force representing El Zagal and the Shrine.

Look forward to more updates on the success of these events in our next article.

I know what you are thinking. The Provost Guard is the most active unit in El Zagal and how do they manage all these events when they should be on the covers of magazines or starring in movies. All of this may be true, but we just enjoy working together and representing the Shrine.

So, if you would like to get more involved in the Shrine or if you would like to be a part of El Zagal’s special forces, come to a Provost Guard meeting and witness the magic for yourself. Our meetings are the 1st Thursday each month at El Zagal. It will change your life.

We are always looking for the best of the best to wear the badge of the Provost Guard.

Yours in Faith, Troy L. MooreChief

Director’s StaffNext Year Already Underway

The Holidays are upon us and it looks like winter. That doesn’t mean we aren’t still busy.

We rode the Holiday Lights Parade and had to put our Bikes and Trikes away for the season. They will get a well needed rest before next year’s parade and competition season.

We have started to plan for next year’s Shriner 5K and Suds and Spuds. We have to start visiting out local brewers who help us make this a great day. It’s a tough job tasting all that amazing beer, but we are up to the task!

Our events will be held on  Saturday April 21st starting in the morning with our 5K run/walk.In the afternoon we will host our Suds and Spuds. This year we plan to have even more Beer Vendors and Potato Chefs.

We plan to have our flyers and tickets available by the Annual Meeting. Don’t miss out on a great day doing what we do best. Being Shriners and working hard to make things happen!

As the year winds down it’s time to thank Illustrious Sir Ringo. Great job on an Amazing Year!

You did it well; with class and made sure everyone had a great time. For those of us who are following behind Ringo the bar just got higher!

Speaking for myself and the Director’s Staff, I hope everyone has a joyous Holiday Season and a Merry Christmas!

Until we meet again,Yours in FaithMD

Oilers of Bismarck / MandanFestivals, Gaming and Good Times

Wow did October go fast! We started out the month with the Fez and Thistle Pipers participating in the Sixth Annual Beulah Highland Games on October 7, 2017; a wonderful Scottish/Irish/Celtic festival. The event was sponsored by the Mercer County Highlanders. Some of the events included the stone throw at 22 pounds for men and 12 pounds for woman, a 10 foot caber toss, scotch tasting, and a traditional Scottish/Irish evening dinner fare.

Some of our younger members participated in both the stone throw and the caber toss. Some of our older members disappeared and later informed us that they had participated in the curling event. As we discussed the ice conditions for curling and where the ice arena was located we learned that their curling consisted of both 12 and 16 ounce draft beers. A big lesson learned from this is to always keep your pipers on a tight leash. At the conclusion of this great outing we invited the Mercer County Highlanders to attend our upcoming Burns Night/Wild Game Potluck on January 26, 2018 and they graciously accepted.

We merry band of Oilers just successfully acquired a small passenger bus to assist us in going to various events and activities as a unit. After purchasing, maintenance, and cleaning we took the bus on its maiden voyage to the Prairie Nights casino. The bus worked fine, but the navigational unit that was added to this bus seemed to be somewhat out of kilter and got us lost twice on the way there. We replaced that navigational unit at the casino with a different Oiler member and he got us home just fine.

If you are interested in usage of the bus for Masonic events please contact Clint Bergstrom at 701-238-7374 or John Young 701-220-4605 for requirements.

Robert Burns Supper

A wild game potluck meal And Highland Gathering

Presented by the Fez & Thistle Shrine Masons of the El Zagal Oilers

& The Bismarck-Mandan DeMolay

6:00pm Friday, January 26, 2018

Bismarck Masonic Center

1009 Basin Ave. Bismarck, North Dakota

All Masons, their families and friends, and all others who are friends of Scottish-Irish culture are invited.

It will be an evening of good food, friendship, honoring the great Scottish poet and composer,

Robert Burns – and a chance for those of us with varied interests in Scotland or Ireland and their traditions to visit.

A haggis (traditional Scottish dish) will be provided

and presented in formal fashion. This is a potluck supper. Please bring a dish to share or a wee bottle of Scotch whisky or other beverage to share, or a freewill offering. If your potluck dish includes game, home-grown produce, or is a favorite northern European recipe that will be great, but any dish is welcome and appropriate. Please dress as you wish. Wearing of the kilt or other Highland attire is strongly encouraged but certainly is not required. If you have interest or skill in Scot-Irish music (fiddling for example), dance, dress, food or sporting activities please bring your instrument or information to share with others (the whole evening is to be a fun potluck). For information visit our Facebook Page, https://www.facebook.com/fez.thistle.nd/ or email [email protected], or call, Tyler Hall 701-213-7636, Dave Bickel 701-400-9111, or John Young 701-220-4605

Our next big event is our Annual Burns Night. This is potluck event covering traditional Scottish fare and a wild game feed. We will be holding it at the Bismarck Masonic Center on January 26, 2018 at 6:30 PM. We will be piping in a ceremonial haggis, discussing traditional highland and lowland dishes, reading some Robert Burns, discussing clan colors, answering the age old question “what does or should someone wear under their kilt”, can you tune a bagpipe, sampling a we-dram or two of scotch, and most importantly having a large amount of fun.

So bring your spouse, significant other, kids, friends, and join us for a rousing good time.

(Remember it’s a potluck so bring a dish and we always need side dishes).

***For those that are curious a dram or drachm has an apothecary symbol of 3---It is a very small amount equal to 1/8 of a fluid ounce.

Yours Truly,P. Squeezer

NOTE: For those members of the Masonic family interested in learning to play the Bagpipes or Drums or wanting to schedule pipe and drum support please feel free to contact John Young at 701-220-4605, Dave Bickel at 701-400-9111, Tyler Hall at 701-213-7636.

JamestownClowns

The Nights Are ExcitingHello to all Nobles and ladies. The Holiday season is upon us and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all who read this.

WOWZER, the new street lights in the parking lot,  or parking lot lights, or yard lights in the parking lot are remarkable, to say the least. And as you know I always say the least.

We have had a Dazzle of a Parade. Thanks to all who helped decorate and Parade!! WOW, what a fun and festive event. I think the citizens that are watching the parade are totally in awe when the Clowns go by.

CLOWN FOR A NIGHT is now! December 2, 2017.  Jamestown Civic Center, set up starts at  9am.  Everybody is welcome to help set up. Doors open at 5:30pm. Clowns, be there made up at 5pm. 32 Below is the band and a wonderful hypnotist is the show. The meal should be good. The clown skit should be epic--as always. Tear down is directly afterward; which is just as important !!

Think people, think. Help if you can, work all you can, and let’s make it the event it is...it IS a fun event that lets us show the civilians who we are. Let’s do it right!! Be upbeat, courteous, and helpful to anybody in attendance. Above all, keep your cool.

Jack and Nick stepped up to be in charge of the extravaganza known as the “Great Chili Extravaganza”. Sorrowfully, I will not be able to attend this year’s grand event. So if it’s a flop, I’m out. But if it turns out like I think it will, I had some influence. The Annual Meeting in Fargo, on  Jan 5 and 6 should be a blast like always. Year by year, the time for our own to be honored at an annual meeting is imminent, drawing near, converging. You get the point. So let’s have a good attendance at the annual meetings to hone our skill at being great attendees!!!  SO, let’s all HAVE A MERRY HOLIDAY SEASON!!! Thanks for reading this... Weezer

EZ Outdoors Unlimited Tables Full of Guns & Wild Game

What a year it’s been, a huge THANKS to Illustrious Blake “Ringo” Wrigley for a fantastic year! There is talk about having “Roast the Pote” at the Fargo Dome, because the event will probably be larger than the circus. This event will be one of those you won’t want to miss. We aren’t going to let Ringo finish his 7 years without a “monster truck” kind of PARTY. See you there. The 2nd Annual Gun Show is in the books; thanks to all nobles that “party-cipated’. We had a great turnout again, and we have already put the 3rd Annual Gun Show on the calendar for next year.

The Provost Guard not only did an outstanding job at Saturday burgers, they also kept the riffraff out, by standing guard at the entrance and checking firearms at the door. Thanks for all your help, what a great unit!

Also, I would like to thank our ladies for making bars, and helping at the concession stand. The ladies are a huge part of our success at the show. On to the Wild Game Feed. Save the date; Saturday, February 17. We are looking for help in all areas for this event. Starting with wild game donations. If

you can spare any meat, fish or poultry, it would be greatly appreciated.

Joe Jacobs will be making his famous “pickled northern” again, so if your ice fishing and pull up one or two of those pike, please save them for us.

If you have culinary talent, we can use your help planning and preparing menu items.

Or, how about helping with the raffles? We have asked each unit and club to donate a gun for the event, and we have commitments from, the Jamestown Clowns, Color Guard, Director’s Staff, EZ Outdoors Unlimited, the Provost Guard, and the Vikings. I hope there are a few more units working on it, so we will need help with various games and raffles.

Please get involved, this is a great event and a huge benefit for our buildings and grounds. See Mike Dow or myself for more details. One last thing. “Goal #1”…membership. If you or you know someone that likes the outdoors, please join us for a meeting. Our #1 goal is to bring more new Shriners to El Zagal. If you know an outdoor enthusiast please invite them to the temple, every third Thursday of the month at 7:00PM.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! See you in the outdoors!Roger A. Ellsworth

EZ Wheels Club Great Idea Gets Tossed AroundThis is going to be good, wheely good!!

Our 2nd meeting of EZ WHEELS CLUB was held on November 15th with 13 members present. We met at the Corner Bar and traveled to Trails End Bar & Grill in Montpelier for burgers and our meeting. Joe isn’t ready to put his Camaro away yet as he and Mike rode in style!

We are now 20 members strong as 3 Nobles have joined our club since our last meeting.

We discussed our upcoming EZ WHEELS BEAN BAG TOURNEY which will be held on March 10 at the KC’s Club here in Jamestown. We plan on making our own boards and bags as we are a handy group of Nobles. More information will follow so consider putting a team together and joining in the fun.

Our next meeting will be December 13 at Schwind Construction. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Rick, Kevin or Fluff.

Stay tuned…Fluff
