’n BOER en sakeman vanTheunissen is die afgelopemaand twee keer in hegtenisgeneem en van veediefstalaangekla terwyl hy ookbinnekort op ’n klag vanaanranding in die hof moetverskyn.

Louis Kotze (51) is op 28Desember op ’n aanklag vanveediefstal op borgtog vryge-laat, maar is kort daarna weerin hegtenis geneem op drieander klagte wat ook metveediefstal verband hou.

Die hof het hom op die laasteaanklag borgtog geweier en hyword in die Grootvleigevange-

nis aangehou.Kotze is bekend daarvoor dat

hy vee aan begrafnisgroepe(societies) verkoop en adverten-siepamflette waarop hy lewendehawe adverteer is oor dieGoudveld heen by taxistaan-plekke opgeplak. Hy besit ook’n bakkery in Theunissen.

Die veediefstalklagte houverband met beeste wat op syplaas, Kopfbrunnen in dieTheunissen-omgewing, gevindis.

Kotze verskyn op 28 Januariein die landdroshof in Theunis-sen op die aanrandingsklag watsy gewese vrou, Des, teen homingedien het. Die egpaar issowat ’n maand gelede geskei.

’n OUERPAAR het Vrydagaand in’n huisroof beland toe hulle laat-aand hul tienerdogter by ’n party-tjie in Valley Drive, Virginia, gaanhaal het.

Theuns Hurter het aan Vistavertel hoe hy en sy vrou, Lynette,die aand omstreeks 22:30 hul dogterwou gaan haal.

Toe hulle by die huis aankomwaar ’n groep tieners, ’n paarvolwassenes en twee jonger kinders’n braai moes hou, het ’n doodsestilte egter geheers.

Die Hurters het gedink hulle het’n fout met die adres gemaak.

Lynette het hul dogter, Monique,

op haar selfoon gebel en sy het aanhaar ma gesê sy “kom nou”.

Sy het egter nie uit die huisgekom nie.

Vier mans het kort hierna uit diehuis na die Hurters se voertuiggestap.

Volgens Theuns het hy nogverskoning gevra omdat hy steedsgedink het hy is dalk by dieverkeerde huis.

Die volgende oomblik is symotorsleutels uitgeruk en is hullemet vuurwapens die huis inge-dwing.

In dié stadium het ’n verdwaasdeLynette Hurter steeds nie besef dathul dogter wel ook van die groepslagoffers deel is nie en geglo hulle

word by ’n ander huis aangehou.Theuns is saam met ander

slagoffers gedwing om sy bankkaartmet die geheime kode te oorhandigwaarna van die rowers na ’nkitsbank is om geld te gaan trek.

Theuns het deurmekaar geraakmet sy twee bankkaarte se kodes eneen van die rowers het van diekitsbank af gebel.

Hy is toe baie erg met ’n hameraangerand.

Sy niere is net gemis, maar hyverduur steeds baie pyn.

Volgens Theuns is die rowersbeslis plaaslike mense wat inVirginia rondbeweeg.

NIE eens die wakker optredevan ’n oplettende vrou kon dieafgelope naweek ’n groep tieners,volwassenes en twee kleinerkinders red toe sewe rowers by’n tienerbraai toegeslaan het nie.

Volgens een van die slagoffershet ’n vrou van ’n nabygeleëhuis die polisie gebel kort nadatdie rowers toegeslaan het.

Die vrou het glo onraadvermoed toe die tieners se hardemusiek eensklaps ophou speel enhonde toe aanhoudend begin blafhet.

’n Patrollievoertuig het glo in’n stadium terwyl die rooftogaan die gang was, wel by diehuis gestop. Die polisiebeampteshet egter nie verder ondersoekingestel nie en het net weerweggery.

Die hele drama het Vrydag-aand omstreeks 22:00 beginterwyl ’n groep jong mense viroulaas saamgekuier het voordatdie skole weer begin.

Sewe rowers het uit verskeierigtings op die huis in ValleyDrive, Virginia, toegeslaan.

Almal is in die sitkamerbymekaargedwing. Die seuns is

hier een-een uitgeroep en met ’nhamer geslaan en seergemaak. ’nSwart seun is aangerand engevra wat hy tussen die witmense soek.

Hy is in die hospitaal opge-neem en word vir ’n ergekneusing aan sy rugstringbehandel.

Opsoek na waardevolle artikelsis kamerdeure oopgebreek.

Ná byna twee uur is almal in’n vertrek toegesluit en het dieboewe met twee van die slagof-fers se voertuie weggery.

Theuns Hurter, ’n pa van eenvan die tieners, en van die anderslagoffers moes mediese behande-ling ontvang. Almal is nog baiegetraumatiseer en vrees nou virhul lewe.

ding geslaag het, is Engels (eerste addisione-le taal, 85%), wiskunde (99%), fisiesewetenskap (100%), rekeningkunde(98 %), lewenswetenskap (98%), lewensori-

entering (97%), en gevorderde wiskunde(82%).Dié wiskundeprogram is gelykstaande aan

eerstejaars-wiskunde op universiteit.Haar gemiddelde persentasie was 95,8%.Ruvé, ’n semi-finalis in Volksblad se

Matrikulant van die Jaar-kompetisie, wouaanvanklik medies aan die Universiteit vandie Vrystaat gaan swot. Haar aansoekvorm,wat haar pa, Rian, persoonlik in Bloemfon-tein ingehandig het, het egter tussen neus enore verdwyn.Sy moes haar toe van die Matrikulantkom-

petisie onttrek omdat sy toe besluit het omhaar by die Noordwes-universiteit vanPotchefstroom vir ’n BCom-graad in te skryf.Sy wil ’n geoktrooieerde rekenmeester word.Ruvé was hoofmeisie van Welkom-Volk-

skool, asook van Welkom-Gimnasium. Sy hetnie net op akademiese gebied gepresteer nie,maar ook in kultuur.Sy het in die skoolkoor gesing en was ’n

CSV-kringleier.As Voortrekker het sy nasionaal naam

gemaak. Sy was kommando-jeugleier,gebied-jeugleier én onder-voorsitter van dieVrystaat. Sy het ook as nasionale jeugleier

die 4x4-kykNet Groot Trek ter herdenkingvan dié geskiedkundige geleentheid se 175stebestaansjaar meegemaak. Net twee Suid-Afri-kaanse leerlinge en twee van Namibië hetdie voorreg gehad om op dié toer te gaan.Ruvé was ’n Presidentsverkenner en spog

met ’n brons-toekenning op kommandovlak,silwer as gebiedsjeugleier en goud omdat syvir kykNet se Groot Trek gekies is.Sy was in 2014 Dux-leerling van haar

skool. Sy het die Grobbelaar-trofee virkultuur, asook die gesogte Gimnasium-ere-penning vir veelsydigheid ontvang. Daarbyis sy vereer vir die hoogste punte in al haarvakke én vir tweetaligheid.Sy was sub-redakteur van haar skoolkoe-

rant, die Gimmie-Nuus, en het gereeldrubrieke vir ’n plaaslike tydskrif geskryf.“Ek was altyd besig en het min voor 17:00

smiddae by die huis gekom.”Sy skryf haar sukses daaraan toe dat sy

altyd opsommings van haar werk gemaakhet.“Ek het gesorg dat ek nooit agter raak nie.

Ek het ook seker gemaak dat ek allesverstaan en het nie geskroom om dieonderwyser te vra as iets nie vir myduidelik is nie.“Sonder die hulp van die Here, my ouers

en onderwysers sou ek nooit soveel sukseskon behaal het nie.”Sy is die kleinkind van Cathy en Tobie

I WRITE to say that I find itextremely disappointing that ourmunicipality would allow a NewYear’s party in the centre of town.At 04.30 on 30 December, the

morning before the concert, wewere rudely awakened by theparty organisers testing theirsound system.The music was so loud that I

thought it came from within myhouse.On New Year’s Eve we had

invited several friends to celebratethe beginning of the new yeartogether.Unfortunately, our entire party

was disturbed by the loud musiccoming from the Rovers field.My dilemma was that if I tried

to drown the sound of their musicwith my own, we could not have adecent conversation.What made it even worse was

the continuous mindless screa-ming of the DJ’s and the organi-sers.Their message to the crowds

was repeated over and over until04:30 when the party finally ended.This continuous screaming of

the same message led me tobelieve that the organisers andDJ’s were either in love with thesound of their own voices or theybelieved that the Welkom atten-dees were intellectually handicap-ped and the message had, therefo-re, to be repeated throughout theconcert.Irrespective of the state of mind

of the organisers, DJ’s andattendees, the event was a seriousdisturbance of the peace and aninfringement on the rights of theWelkom residents.Nowhere in the country would

such an event be allowed in thecentre of town on the border ofseveral residential areas.One would expect such an event

to be held at a stadium or possi-bly at Phakisa Raceway. Absolute-ly no consideration was given tous as the residents.The music and screaming could

be heard as far as Naudéville.How can we respect our council-

lors and municipal employeeswhen they have no considerationor respect for us as residents?And given this disrespect for us,

why should we support them bypaying for their services whichthey misuse?This leads me to the next

questions.Firstly, who sanctioned this

event and did payment come fromthe municipality?The person who sanctioned the

event should be held accountablefor his irresponsible actions.Should his name become

available to the residents, giventhe comments and reactionsreceived on our police forumgroup consisting of 100 residentsthat evening, I am sure we willtake the law into our own handsand take action against thisindividual or group of individuals.Many people noted that next

time such an event took place,they would not be held accounta-ble for their actions.I sympathise with this view as

it is not pleasant to be lyingawake at 03:00 on New Year’s Daylistening to some idiot screaming“you must enjoy . . . happy 2015”.This is a happy occasion and mustbe enjoyed by all and not only onegroup at the expense of another.If this event was sponsored by

the municipality, then I will havelost all respect for the people whoare supposed to guide and manageour city.Here we are paying people to

frustrate us, disturb our peace andinfringe on our common rights asresidents of Welkom.It would therefore be interesting

to find out who paid for all ofthis.In conclusion, I note that our

City is already in a depressedstate of affairs. I am finding thaton a weekly basis. Clients areinvestigating alternative optionsand cities to move their busines-ses to.This inconsiderate action by our

leaders will even further encoura-ge people to move away fromWelkom.People will start believing that

our leaders are not capable ofproperly managing the populationof Welkom, especially those whoprovide employment in this city.) Elsa van der Walt-Long,Welkom:I’m so pleased you had the guts

age homes all around town –

people who go to bed “at sunset”?2. What about the sick in

hospital – a family gatheringaround a hospital bed grieving theloss of a loved one who just died?3. What about the residents who

have thatched roofs or lapas whowere petrified that the fireworksmight set them alight?4. What about all the dogs and

other pets that died of injuries orjust ran away?5. Who paid for cleaning up the

CBD again? It looked like a trashheap on New Year’s Day X in factfor a number of days after thefestivities.Lastly, why are fireworks sold

at all if there is a total ban onthese? Why wasn’t any (or verylittle) steps taken against peopleshooting off fireworks in theirback or front yards, even doing soin the middle of streets in residen-tial areas?) SO this is how the new year starts. This poor dog was hung froma tree in St Helena, Welkom. Her front feet were raised just highenough for her to strangle to death, and the metal hook that theropewas tied towas just strong enough to prevent her from stan-ding on her back feet against the tree to possibly save her ownlife. Clawswas called out to the scene. The dogwas already dead,but still deserving of justice. What individual finds joy in doingthis to an innocent animal? THE Tsunami Christian Academy inWelkom started its first academic term withone class and ten students.

Now, nine years later, a significantnumber of pastors have already completed

their studies here. It currently has studentsand teachers from more than six differentdenominations.

During the course, students take ajourney through the Bible. A series of short

courses is also available, ending the firstyear with a certificate in ministry, then adiploma in church leadership. At the end ofthe third year comes a diploma in ministry.

gekom. Hy het aanvanklik by mensegeloseer, maar later twee vertrekke in St.Helena gehuur. Die een het hy as kantooringerig en die ander een was sy blyplek.“Ek het alle sake gehanteer. Van dronk

op straat tot bakleiery.”Meyer was onder andere voorsitter van

die plaaslike tak van die Nasionale Party.Nadat hy en sy eerste vrou, Maura, in

1952 getroud is – die egpaar het ses kindersgehad – het hy self sy huis in MountAyliffstraat, St. Helena, laat bou.’n Bou-inspekteur het Meyer met die

planne gehelp. Hy was eienaar en bouer enhet twee messelaars en vier arbeiders indiens geneem.Meyer en sy huidige vrou, Jeanette, bly

steeds in dié netjiese huis met sy sesslaapkamers.Hy was in 1965 burgemeester en was drie

keer onderburgemeester van Welkom.In 1975 is hy van die prokureursrol

geskrap. Hy het later, tot sy aftrede, virAnglo American gewerk.“Ek was senior beampte in die kantoor

van die personeelbestuurder van diePresident Brand-goudmyn en het ondermeer lesings oor die toepassing van die Wetop die Mynbedryf geskryf.“Ek het ook lesings gegee oor die toepas-

sing van die Wet op Myne en Bedrywe.”Sy eerste vrou is in 1994 oorlede en hy is

in 2000 met Jeanette getroud.

THE St Andrew’s School in Welkom hascelebrated a 100% IEB National SeniorCertificate pass rate.This school has enjoyed a 100% pass rate

since the first matriculants graduated atthis school in 1994.Precious Tromp achieved six distinctions

and will be studying Law at the University

of Cape Town this year.Other outstanding results were Tshego

Mogkobo with her five distinctions andYolandé Matthee with four.Yolandé is also in the top 1% of all IEB

results in Afrikaans (first additionallanguage).Approximately 80% of the school’s

matriculants achieved the standard requi-red for a bachelor’s degree at a university

and 66% of all subject results were Csymbols or better.The school’s 28 candidates achieved 36 As

(18% of all symbols), 41 Bs (20%) and 57 Cs(28%).Chris Jewell, the headmaster, is very

proud of these results. “They show onceagain why we have such a strong academicreputation in the region. St Andrew’s hasnever had a matric failure,” Jewell said.

“I am especially happy for anotherreason. One third of the class achievedthree distinctions or more,” he continued.“It is most satisfying to see that St

IN the past, when people complainedabout the ineffective 10111 lines, one wouldhave thought that those people were lying.On Saturday, 11 January at 13:34, I made

a call to 10111 to report a case. The womanwho answered the phone refused to give meher name, take my details or even mycellphone number. To top this all, shecontinued to speak to her colleagues while Iwas trying to speak to her; this was astrong indication that my call meantnothing to her.Three hours after I had made the call to

the centre, there was still no police officersto assist me. I made a second call againaround 17:00 and the very same lady rudelyanswered the phone with her mouth full offood. She then asked me if I had previouslycalled the centre. I asked myself whetherthe 10111 calls are screened or not? Whydid she take my numbers earlier if shewasn’t going to use them? She then, with amouth still full of food, told me that theyhad a situation at 10111. She said therewere no cars or police vans to provide aservice.She then told me I should wait, the police

will come. To this day they have not yetarrived. One wonders if calling from “OldAge” (her terminology) means nothing tothe police and even if old people get killedor harmed the police will never come. Inthis case I would like to put it on recordthat the call was made to 10111, not to theJan Hofmeyr Police Station. Perhaps if itwas made directly to the station themen/women in blue would have seen theneed to heed the call of an elderly person,unlike their 10111 colleagues.One is beginning to lose trust in the 10111

service. It used to be an effective service,coming to the aid of civilians withinminutes. These days they don’t evenrespond to requests. We are quick tocomplain about poor services we get fromthe municipality and from clinics, while wesay nothing about the incompetence of10111 officials. Their service is so muchpoorer. The 10111 switchboard clerks shouldbe taught professionalism and manners.After the poor service I received from them,I cannot help asking: Where are the BathoPele principles? Is it so hard to be courte-ous?

THE House of Hope Programme has celebra-ted ten years in the Goldfields.

This all-encompassing programme evolvedto include a safehouse for abandoned andneglected babies, three foster homes where18 children are cared for in their foreverfamilies, the Zoe Life Centre, Tough Loveand recently a skills development program-me.

The Zoe Life Centre includes the Pregnan-cy Crisis Centre which offers girls theneeded support and counselling, and theanti-natal programme where they helppregnant women with first-time clinic visits.They also offer a support group for youngmothers. Lastly, the Zoe Life Centre offersrape crisis assistance and rape crisis-trai-ning by Melitas carers. They work closelywith the police in assisting women whohave been raped.

This centre also gives ongoing training tonew volunteers in counselling and teenagepregnancies, STIs and HIV. The centre sendsout monthly newsletters to raise awarenessamong girls.

Tough Love is a loving solution for

families that are being torn apart byunacceptable adolescent behaviour. Thissupport group meets every Tuesday at 19:00in the Deo Doxa Church Hall in Stateway.

The House of Hope is also setting out tostart a skills development programme. “Weaim to fulfil the growing need in thecommunity for skilled manpower acrosssectors and narrow the gap between thedemand and supply of skills. We envision awood shop, vegetable garden and otherphysical training programmes,” says JackieBotes, programme director.

“The House of Hope Programme hasextended its name to the House of HopeCommunity Life Development Programme.This incorporates the four projects aimed athelping the family holistically. These includethe four homes (Hope, Love, Peace andJoy), Tough Love, the Zoe Life Centre andthe skills development project.

belangrik dissipline, respek en lojaliteitteenoor jou span is.”Hy is ook daarna genooi om drie weke

saam met die Toyota-Cheetahs in Bloemfon-tein te oefen.Nog ’n eer wat Boela te beurt geval het,

is dat hy een van die benoemdes van SARUse Curriebeker-eersteligaspeler van die jaaris.Sy skepskop in die doodsnikke van die

wedstryd teen die Valke het die wedstrydbeklink toe die Griffons die eerste liga vandie Curriebeker in Welkom gewen het.Boela, wat as die speler “met die veilige

hande” bekend staan, is in Port Elizabethgebore. Hy is die oudste van Eugene enSophia Abrahams se drie seuns.

Hy was 14 jaar oud en in gr. 9 toe JanOberholzer, die eerste rugbyafrigter van dieHarmony-sportakademie in Virginia, hom“ontdek” het.Hy het Goudveld toe gekom en was vier

jaar ’n leerling van die Hoërskool HentieCilliers.Boela het in 2005 die eerste keer Craven-

week gespeel en was in 2006 en 2007kaptein van die Sportakademie se eerstespan.Ná matriek het hy ’n kontrak met die

Griffons gesluit. Die Kaap het egter geroepen hy het vir Maties in die Varsity-bekerdiens gedoen.In 2012 was hy by die OP-Kings. Hy was

ook lid van die Barbarian-span wat teenEngeland kragte gemeet het.“Toe Oersond (Gorgonzola, afrigter van

die Griffons) my bel en sê hy soek ’nskrumskakel, het ek ja gesê sonder om tweekeer te dink.“Ek was nog nooit spyt dat ek Goudveld

toe gekom het nie. Dit is my tweede huis.”Boela deel ’n huis in Bedelia met nog
