A FIRST OF ITS KIND sports

academy for boys and girls at high

school and primary school level

was launched at the St Dominics

College in Welkom.

The aim of the academy is to

give the learners of St Dominics

the opportunity to become the best

sportsmen and-women they can be

in their respective fields.

The academy will play a support-

ing role in developing sport at the

St Dominics College.

A sports academy at school level

is a place where children can

improve their skills in a particular

sport. It assists in building their

potential in their journey to

becoming professional sportsmen

and sportswomen.

The academy will specialise in

professional training for various

sporting codes. As sport has

become more and more competitive

at school and national level, the

academy will offer an invaluable

service by providing expert advice

and training in key areas, says

Jacques Tredoux, deputy principal

of student affairs.

The sporting disciplines at the

academy will include swimming,

hockey, rugby, cricket, soccer,

tennis and netball. Equestrian

studies are also a long-term goal at

the academy.

The benefits of sport reaches far

beyond the impact on a childs

physical wellbeing and the value of

sport should not be underestimated.

School-based sport forms an

integral part of a childs overall

educational experience as physical

activity is vital to the holistic

development of young people

nurturing their physical, social and

emotional health, says Tredoux.

He says the St Dominics College

Sports Academy will concentrate

on skills and fitness, safety in sport

and acquiring knowledge.

The learners will constantly be

exposed to the latest, cutting-edge

coaching techniques and skills. Top

coaches and mentors will be

recruited to nurture their passion

for sport among the learners on a

physical and physiological level in

preparation for sporting seasons.

) The St Dominics College has

recently launched a fundraising

initiative in aid of a sports acade-

my called a moo poo. Tickets are

already on sale and it will culmi-

nate on Saturday, 16 August.

On this day well have a cow

grazing on a designated field at the

school. The field will be divided

into blocks. The first block in

which she leaves a deposit will win

the second prize, and the second

block in which she leaves a deposit

is the winner. The main prize is

R20 000 and the second prize is

R10 000. There will also be 20 R1 000

prizes. Tickets for this day can be

bought at the school in Jan

Hofmeyr Road, Welkom, at R100

per ticket. One ticket buys one

block.

voorgenome munisipale tariefverhogings

van sowat 28%.

Stella Cloete van die Matjhabeng-belas-

tingbetalersvereniging s hul kantoor is

oorval met navrae en inwoners wat aanbied

om te help om die beswaarskrif in die

gemeenskap te mobiliseer.

As daar ooit n geleentheid hom voorge-

doen het om saam te staan, dan is dit nou.

Wanneer daar aan n mens se sak gevat

word en brood op die tafel kom ter sprake,

dan bestaan daar nie so iets soos ras, kleur

of ouderdom nie. Almal word geraak. Dit is

nou presies die situasie waarin ons as

inwoners van die Goudveld ons bevind, s

Gwen Louwrens, n inwoner van Welkom.

Die verhogings wat nou op die tafel is, is

6% op erfbelasting, 4% op water, 7,5% op

elektrisiteit, 5% op riool en 5,5% op

vullisverwydering. Dit is sowat 28% op ons

totale munisipale rekening. Ek vra of dit

nou billik is in die tye wanneer salarisver-

hogings wissel van 5% tot 10%, s Louw-

rens.

Die beswaarskrifte wat deur die Matjha-

beng-belastingbetalersvereniging saamgestel

en versprei word, is oral in die Goudveld

beskikbaar.

Beswaarskrif is verkrygbaar by Midas in

Odendaalsrus, die polisiekantore in Crai-

blaan in Riebeeckstad, Johnny Cambanis-

droogskoonmakers in Virginia, Pick n Pay

(Edward) in Hennenman en ook Bobaas-bil-

tong in Welkom. In Welkom kan die

beswaarskrif in die voorportaal van die ou

Netnuus-gebou langs Barbour & Thorne in

Stateway, en die kantore van die belasting-

betalersvereniging by Stateway 327 geteken

word. Navrae kan ook gerig word aan Stella

bankstate van die afgelope jaar nagegaan en

seker gemaak hy skuld nie n sent nie,

maar daar word steeds van hom verwag om

nou die probleem op te los. Hy wil ook weet

wat die verdere stappe is waarmee hy

gedreig word.

Vista het self die nommer geskakel en

moes taamlik lank aanhou net om elke keer

afgesny te word voordat n konsultant kon

antwoord. N nie minder nie as agt oproepe

het Vista daarin geslaag om met n konsul-

tant te praat. Di man het bevestig dat hy

vir Zandile Management Services (ZMS)

werk en dat hulle namens die Matjhabeng-

munisipaliteit skuldinvordering doen.

Die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit het ZMS

aangestel om agterstallige geld in te vorder.

Die name en kontakbesonderhede van

mense wat ge-SMS word, word deur die

stadsraad aan ZMS verskaf. ZMS se hoof-

kantoor is in Johannesburg, maar die firma

het ook n kantoor in Welkom.

Dit blyk dat die Matjhabeng-munisipali-

teit verkeerde inligting aan ZMS verskaf

wat dan tot groot ongerief en frustrasie van

inwoners lei.

THE House of Hope is turning ten and

urgent maintenance needs to be done at

this home for abandoned babies in State-

way, Welkom.

Well be very grateful if the community

can help us upgrade and maintain our baby

house. The idea is that if you have a

business or work for a company that can

assist us, perhaps each room of the house

can be allocated to a different company for

upgrading and or maintenance. You are

welcome to visit us and see first hand what

needs to be done, says Past. Jackie Botes,

project manager at House of Hope.

Some of the things at House of Hope

which need urgent attention include the

outside wall which is collapsing and needs

to be rebuilt and the roof over one of the

cots which leaks during the rainy season

and needs to be sealed.

The kitchen needs an urgent revamp as

the cupboards are all disintegrating.

House of Hope has a board in front of

the house that can be used for advertising

at a monthly fee or a donation, says Botes.

They also urgently need nappies, black

bags, rooibos tea and baby-care products.

The children that are homed in the

forever homes, which form part of the

project, also need clothes for children aged

7 to 16.

We also need a lounge suite at House of

Hope, chairs for the baby room and

furniture, says Botes.

TWO Welkom women have been

selected for the semifinals of the

Mrs Commonwealth South

Africa pageant. The grand finale

takes place at the Lyric Theatre

at Gold Reef City on 29 August.

Marelize Joubert and Mau-

reen Ludick have made it to the

top 12 in this pageant which

empowers women with the

knowledge to bring about

change to communities in need.

The winner will represent South Africa at

the international pageant in London in

November 2014. All 53 Commonwealth

member states are invited to send their

representatives to compete for the prestigi-

ous title.

The Mrs Commonwealth SA finalist

platform provides me with an

opportunity to use my

business skills as well as

creativity in bringing about

change, says Marelize.

She says her main aim is

foreign investment and job

creation, especially for people

with physical disabilities.

I believe knowledge

ignites ambition and ambiti-

on will put food on the table.

My charity projects are Pink

Drive and the Agap Home

for people with mental disabilities in

Winburg.

The Agap Home totally depends on

donations from the public, she says.

Mediclinic Welkom has awarded its annual

Nursing Excellence Award to the registered

nurse Nadia Kruger in recognition of her

commitment to the spirit of nursing.

International Nurses Day is a global

tribute to the profession held on 12 May to

coincide with Florence Nightingales

birthday.

This year we want to honour our own

shining lights and celebrate our nurses for

being experts in their fields.

It is also the day where a nursing

practitioner at each hospital is chosen as

the Nursing Excellence Award recipient by

her peers and patients, says Estelle

Jordaan, nursing executive of Mediclinic

Southern Africa.

Although we can only select one person

for the award, I would like to take this

opportunity to acknowledge each of our

nursing practitioners for their invaluable

contribution to enhancing the quality of

life of our patients by providing

comprehensive, world-class care, she

concludes.

Thabiso Tsoaeli (52) as their new

chief financial officer (CFO).

Tsoaeli, who hails from

Bethlehem, is an experienced

government official having led

the Dihlabeng Local Municipali-

ty as a municipal manager from

2010 to 2014; strategic executive:

Finance and Development/chief

financial officer at the West

Rand District from 2001 to 2010

and administrative unit manager

at the City of Tshwane from 2000

to 2001.

He also had a short stint at

the Crocodile River Representa-

tive Council as a rural manager

in 1999; senior clerk: Expenditu-

re at the Western Gauteng

Services Council in 1997;

internal audit clerk at the

Western Gauteng Services

Council in 1996 and capital

clerk, Blyvooruitzicht Gold

OOM LOUIS VAN DER SPUY het meer as

50 jaar gelede van Vrede af hierheen gekom

om by die nuwe goudmyne te kom werk.

Min het hy geweet dit is hier waar hy sy

lewensmaat sal vind en 50 jaar later n goue

bruilof gaan vier.

Sy bruid was een van die eerste inwoners

van Welkom.

Die Botesgesin het hulle in 1942 hier

gevestig toe die wreld nog net uit boerdery

bestaan het. Tannie Lenie se pa, Hansie

Botes, het n n groot droogte in die

Kalahari sy heil in die Vrystaat kom soek

en hier gehelp om vir goud te boor. Hy was

ook die eerste mynwerker wat amptelik

aangeteken is en is as stoorman aangestel.

Tannie Lenie onthou nog die dae toe

hulle uit n sinkhuis na een van die eerste

splinternuwe huise in Elandlaan, St.

Helena, verhuis het.

N skool het sy in die nuwe, snelgroeien-

de Welkom-biblioteek gaan werk. Oom

Louis, toe nog n jong mynwerker, is n

ywerige leser en dit is hier tussen die

boeke dat hy ware goud gevind het.

Hulle is op 16 Mei 1964 getroud en het

verlede week hul goue bruilof in Hennen-

man, waar hulle deesdae woon, gevier.

Tannie Lenie s hulle moet hul drie

kinders, sewe kleinkinders en goeie vriende

bedank wat gehelp het om hul lewenspad

saam te verryk.

Baie kampeer het gehelp om die huwelik

gesond te hou, s oom Louis, maar hulle

gee ook alle eer aan die Hemelse Vader vir

sy genade en leiding wat verseker het dat

hulle vanjaar albei 74 jaar oud kon word

om di groot mylpaal saam te vier.

Hul liefde goud werd

OOMLOUISENTANNIE LENIE s baie bak

lei en opmaak is hul wenresep vir n suk

sesvolle huwelik. Hulle is nou 50 jaar ge

troud. Hulle glo geluk en liefde hou n huwe

lik gesond en omdat uitmekaargaan net

nooit as n opsie oorweeg is nie, het hul hu

welik die aanslae van die tyd oorleef.
