GAME OVERVIEW The Virginia Cavaliers (12-3) enter the quarterfinal round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament as the No. 5 seed, the fifth time in program history they have had the fifth seed. In the final regular season polls, UVa was ranked No. 8 in the USILA coaches poll and No. 6 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse media poll. UVa will face the No. 4 seeded Notre Dame Fighting Irish (12-2) on Sunday. Notre Dame was ranked No. 5 in the final regular season coaches poll and No. 4 in the final regular season media poll. The neutral-site game will be contested at PPL Park, in Chester, Pa. The game is set to face off at noon.

THE SERIES VS. THE FIGHTING IRISH Sunday marks the seventh all-time meeting between the Cavaliers and Fighting Irish, and the first since the 2006 NCAA Tournament. UVa leads the all-time series 5-1, with all previous games being contested in Charlottes-ville, three of which were NCAA Tournament games (1993, 1994 and 2006). Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan, a UVa alum, is in his 24th season with the Fighting Irish after spending two seasons as an assistant coach for the Cavaliers under former head coaching legend Jim Adams. Corrigan has led Notre Dame to 17 NCAA Tournaments while in South Bend and won the 2012 regular season BIG EAST title with the return of 18 ND monogram winners from last year’s squad.

THE SERIES VS. THE FIGHTING IRISH• Virginia holds a 5-1 lead in the all-time series against Notre Dame• The teams had a three-year series that ended in 2003 and have met once since, the 2006 NCAA Tournament• Three of the meetings between UVa and Notre Dame have come in the NCAA Tournament (1993, 1994, 2006) and UVa holds a 3-0 record• All six games in the series have been contested at UVa’s Klöckner Stadium• Notre Dame’s lone victory was an 11-8 win in 2001 as the Fighting Irish advanced to Championship Weekend that season before falling to Syracuse in the semifinals• The Fighting Irish, ranked sixth at game time, became just the scond team ranked fifth or lower to defeat the Cavaliers at Klöckner• Virginia’s 23-4 win in the 1994 Tournament represents its biggest win over a ranked team in program history (Notre Dame was ranked 14th at game time.) CAVALIERS, IRISH SHARE TIES• UVa and Notre Dame share several ties which could be intriguing• Guy Van Arsdale, currently the head coach at Jacksonville and older brother of UVa associate head coach Marc Van Arsdale, was an assistant coach at Notre Dame in 2004• Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan is a graduate of UVa and played on three Cavalier squads that made the NCAA Tournament from 1979-81• Corrigan was an assistant coach on Jim Adams’ staff at UVa in 1987 and 1988 before being named head coach at Notre Dame prior to the 1989 season• Corrigan’s father, Gene Corrigan, served as athletics director at UVa from 1971-80, was the UVa lacrosse head coach from 1959-67, was the soccer coach from 1958-65 (among other positions)• Gene Corrigan left UVa to become Notre Dame’s athletics director in 1981 and left in 1987 to become the ACC’s third-ever commissioner from 1987-1997• Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan is first cousins with former UVa women’s basketball head coaching legend Debbie Ryan• Kevin Corrigan also was a local Charlottesville high school coach for one season, serving as an assistant boy’s lacrosse coach at Western Albemarle High School in 1982

Rob Emery took a Colin Briggs pass and ripped it for the game’s final goal with 4:48 left in the contest, lifting the No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers (1-0) to a season-opening triumph over the No. 20 Drexel Dragons (0-1), 9-8. Just over three minutes prior, Bobby Hill tal-lied his first collegiate goal to tie the game, 8-8, in front of an over-capacity crowd of 2,331 inside Vidas Field. Capacity crowd is list-ed at Vidas Field at 1,500. Chris Bocklet started the game’s scoring, cutting around the edge to score at the 11:34 mark in the first quarter, giving UVa the 1-0 lead. The Dragons reeled off a 4-1 run to take the 4-2 lead after Ryan Belka scored unassist-ed at 5:06 in the second quarter. UVa’s Matt White scored on a Bocklet pass to cut UVa’s deficit to one goal, 4-3, heading into the half. White’s goal to close the half, coupled with scores by Emery and Briggs to start the third stanza, gave the Cavaliers a one-goal lead, 5-4, at the 11:20 mark. Drexel tied the game on a Robert Church score 50 seconds later at 10:30. Owen Van Arsdale scored his first two collegiate goals via passes from White and Briggs to give the Cavaliers a 7-5 lead with 5:31 left in the third quarter. Drexel, however, scored three-straight goals to retake the lead at 8-7, capped by a Nick Trizano goal with 10:08 left in the game. UVa then took over behind the goals from Hill and the game-capper from Emery, the sophomore’s second of the day. Rob Fortunato was stellar between the pipes for UVa, saving 11 shots and picking up five ground balls. The game was the senior’s second career start. Fortunato also started the season-opening win against Drexel in 2011 where he stopped a career-high 12 shots.

Steele Stanwick scored two goals and dished out five assists as the No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers (2-0) won its home opener for the fifth- straight year, defeating the VMI Keydets (0-3), 19-5, inside Klöckner Stadium. Virginia now owns a 19-0 all-time record against its in-state opponent. Drew Leonard put VMI up just 1:05 into the game on a pass from Keith Long. UVa tied the game at 8:17 in the first quarter on Stanwick’s first goal, unassisted. The senior’s score started a 6-0 run which was capped by a Chris Bocklet goal with 22 seconds to go in the first. Virginia proceeded to put the game away courtesy of a 12-2 run, which included 10- straight goals, capped by Matt Cockerton’s first goal of the year on Carl Walrath’s first collegiate assist at the 5:18 mark in the third quarter. Matt Cockerton scored two goals and his brother, Mark, added three scores. The Cockerton brothers have now each scored goals in the same game three times. In 2011, they both scored against Mount St. Mary’s (Feb. 22) and VMI (Feb. 28). Stanwick led all scorers with seven points after being held scoreless for only the fourth time in his career at Drexel.

Colin Briggs scored a career-high seven points and Steele Stanwick joined the exclu-sive 100/100 club as the No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers (3-0) topped the visiting Stony Brook Seawolves (0-2), 12-5, inside Klöckner Stadium. On the historic day it was actually the Seawolves who jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. After Chris LaPierre was tagged with an un-releasable illegal body check, Stony Brook’s Matt Bellando’s scored an extra man goal 33 seconds into the contest. Russ Bananno followed up with a goal at 8:37, cap-ping the streak. The lead was short-lived as the Cavaliers scored six goals in a row to take a 6-2 advan-tage. Briggs scored twice and assisted three times during the run, including capping the streak on a pass to Chris Bocklet at 6:28 in the second quarter. Stony Brook and UVa traded goals as the Cavaliers went into the intermission with a 7-3 advantage. Kyle Belton cut UVa’s lead to three goals, 7-4, when he opened the third quarter scoring at 11:38. Stanwick scored his 100th and 101st career goals on back-to-back possessions to give UVa the 9-4 lead. Mike Rooney took a pass from Bananno with 2:13 left in the third quarter, capping Stony Brook’s scoring for the day and bringing the UVa advantage to four goals, 9-5. UVa ended the game with three-straight goals, including two by Mark Cockerton. The game’s final score was by Cockerton, courtesy of Stanwick’s third assist of the game and the 100th of his career, pushing him into the spe-cial group of lacrosse players.

Chris Bocklet tied a career high with six goals to pace the No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers (4-0) to a 17-5 triumph over the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers (1-1), inside Waldron Family Stadium. Bocklet has reached six goals now three times in his career. Bocklet fittingly started the scoring 1:56 into the game on an Owen Van Arsdale pass. After The Mount tied the game at the 10:47 mark in the first quarter on a Daniel Stranix unassisted goal, UVa tallied nine-straight goals, storming out to a 10-1 lead. During the run Bocklet scored four more goals, giving him five in the first half. Rob Emery and Steele Stanwick each netted two goals apiece and Ryan Tucker deposited one goal during the streak. Brett Schmidt scored with 1:18 left in the second quarter, halting UVa’s run. Colin Briggs netted a goal with 50 seconds remain-ing in the half, sending UVa into the intermis-sion with an 11-2 advantage. The Cavaliers outscored the Mount 6-3 in the second half behind Tucker’s second and third goals of the game, his first career hat trick. Pat Glading tallied his first colle-giate goal, while Matt and Mark Cockerton scored in the same game for the fourth time in their careers, giving UVa eight different players who netted goals in the game.

Colin Briggs scored three goals and assisted another to help the No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers (5-0) top the No. 3 Syracuse Orange (2-1) , 14-10, in front of 5,855 fans inside Klöckner Stadium. Virginia struck first with back-to-back goals by Matt White and Ryan Tucker, assisted by Matt Kugler. The 2-0 UVa advantage didn’t last long as Syracuse went on a 6-1 run, including a string of five-straight goals to take a 6-3 lead. Tim Desko started the run with two goals in a row and Matt Pratt fin-ished it at 5:27 in the second quarter. UVa didn’t go quietly into the intermis-sion as Briggs scored his second goal of the game on a Steele Stanwick helper 48 seconds before the break. UVa trailed by two goals at halftime, 6-4. After the break UVa scored four more goals in a row, taking an 8-6 lead. UVa wouldn’t trail again. Chris Bocklet capped the run after picking up a ground ball in the crease and shuffling it past Syracuse goalie Matthew Lerman with 7:50 left in the third quarter. The Cavaliers held a 6-4 advantage over the Orange for the remainder of the game, picking up the win. Virginia held drastic advantages in faceoffs and ground balls. Ryan Benincasa had a career night at the faceoff X, winning 20-of-28. UVa also doubled up Syracuse on ground balls 42-21. UVa goalie Rob Fortunato had a career night in between the pipes, saving 16 shots.

Steele Stanwick found Colin Briggs in front of the crease to lift the No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers (7-0) to a 9-8 overtime win over the No. 3 Cornell Big Red (3-1) in front of 17,138 fans inside M&T Bank Stadium at the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic. Virginia managed the game’s only goal in the first quarter on a highlight reel play from Steele Stanwick to Mark Cockerton with 5:53 remaining in the period. Stanwick was double teamed on a dodge and found Cockerton as he was falling down. The UVa defense clamped down the Cornell offense in the opening period, the first quarter this sea-son the Big Red have been shutout. UVa took a 2-0 lead when Scott McWilliams picked up a ground ball on the defensive end and ran the length of the field untouched and deposited his first collegiate goal at 13:31 in the second quarter. Cornell rebounded to score three goals in a row and take a 3-2 lead, the Big Red’s only advantage of the afternoon. JJ Gilbane deposited a Max Van Bourgondien pass in the back of the net at the 6:49 mark in the sec-ond quarter to cap the streak. The Big Red’s only lead lasted 12 sec-onds when UVa countered on a Stanwick to Chris Bocklet combo at 6:37 to tie the con-test. Briggs found Cockerton at 5:06 to give UVa the 4-3 advantage. Cornell evened the game, 4-4, going into the intermission after Steve Mock picked up a blocked shot and quickly tallied the goal with 2:11 left in the first half. Virginia came out of the break with three unassisted goals, the first two by Rob Emery, and Briggs capped the streak with 1:24 left in the third quarter as UVa held Cornell scoreless in the third stanza. Chris Langton scored with 13:31 left in regulation to bring Cornell within two, 7-5. Briggs then found Stanwick in front of the crease with 5:18 left in the fourth quarter, pushing UVa’s advantage back to three goals, 8-5. Cornell came rushing back, scoring three-straight goals to knot the score at 8-8. Former Cavalier Conner English scored back-to-back goals, bringing Cornell within one goal. The comeback was complete for Cornell after a tremendous save by UVa goal-ie Rob Fortunato caromed toward Van Bourgondien, who quickly deposited the game-tying score. In overtime Mick Parks won the opening faceoff, but UVa was unable to get the ball cleared, losing possession. Cornell was unable to get a shot off, turning the ball over on a dropped pass. Bobby Hill picked up the crucial ground ball and was able to clear the ball as Virginia called a timeout to set up the winning score.

Overcoming a five-goal deficit, Chris Bocklet scored four goals and Ryan Tucker tallied his second career hat trick to elevate No. 1 Virginia (8-0) to an 11-9 triumph over the Ohio State Buckeyes (3-4), inside historic Ohio Stadium. UVa finished the final three quarters on a 10-3 run to take the victory. Ohio State won 6-of-8 faceoffs in the first period to storm out to a 6-1 advantage over the Cavaliers. The Buckeyes streaked out to a 3-0 lead on unassisted goals by Jesse King, Turner Evans and Nick Liddil. After Bocklet deposited his first score on a Colin Briggs pass at 8:44, Ohio State scored three-straight goals to finish the first quarter scor-ing. UVa bounced back and the defense held Ohio State scoreless for the next 17:41. In the process the Cavaliers scored five-straight goals, two by Bocklet, to tie the contest at 6-6 going into the intermission. Three overtime turnovers by the No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers (8-1) set the table for the No. 2 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays (8-0) to walk out of Klöckner Stadium with the victory, 11-10, in front of 6,899 fans. The UVa loss snapped a 14-game winning streak inside Klöckner Stadium, the longest current streak in the nation. It also broke UVa’s 13-game winning streak, which was tops in the nation. UVa’s senior class is now 27-2 all-time inside Klöckner Stadium. Johns Hopkins’ John Ranagan’s split dodge allowed him to unload the game-win-ning score with five seconds remaining in the overtime period. The loss was UVa’s first in overtime since falling to Syracuse, 12-11, in the 2008 NCAA Semifinal round. The loss was the first overtime loss at home since Syracuse won 18-17 on Feb. 28, 1998. Virginia started the scoring on a Colin Briggs score via a Rob Emery pass at 10:41 in the first quarter. Emery scored unassisted at 4:24 to give UVa the 2-0 lead in the opening stanza. Mike Poppleton scored unassisted at 4:19 off the ensuing faceoff to cut the Blue Jays’ deficit to one goal, 2-1. Steele Stanwick tied a career high with eight points, pacing the No. 3 Virginia Cavaliers (9-1, 1-0 ACC) to a stellar road victo-ry, 12-8, against the No. 9 Maryland Terrapins (5-3, 1-2 ACC), inside Byrd Stadium. Stanwick had three goals and five assists, his fifth-straight game of the season with at least a trio of helpers. Stanwick set the table early for UVa, assisting on the first two Cavalier goals. He found Chris Bocklet at 8:27 in the first, fol-lowed by Rob Emery at 7:04 to give UVa the 2-0 lead. Maryland found the net for the first time at 4:37 on a John Haus score, cutting the defi-cit to one goal, 2-1. UVa finished the first quarter scoring with two seconds remaining on a Bocklet score from Owen Van Arsdale, pushing the Cavalier advantage back to two goals, 3-1. The Terrapins outscored UVa 4-2 in the second frame, tying the game heading into the intermission, 5-5. After Bocklet scored on a Stanwick helper during an extra-man pos-session with 8:09 left in the second quarter, Landon Carr tied the game with 1:57 left on a Niko Amato pass. The Maryland goalie was

credited with the assist when he found a streaking Carr, leading him into the score. The score after Snider’s goal was momentarily a one-goal game, 9-8. UVa scored three unanswered goals to secure the victory. Stanwick assisted a Matt White score, followed by a highlight-reel score of his own at 7:34. Surrounded by Terps, Stanwick rolled to his right from behind the cage and jumped parallel with the crease. Nine different Cavaliers scored at least one goal to help No. 1 Virginia (10-1, 2-0 ACC) to a key league road victory over the No. 9 North Carolina Tar Heels (8-4, 1-2 ACC) on Saturday afternoon, in front of 5,138 fans at Fetzer Field. The attendance was the largest crowd to watch a lacrosse game at Fetzer Field since 1991. UVa jumped out front, 2-0, behind back-to-back goals by Owen Van Arsdale and Chris LaPierre. Van Arsdale’s score on a Steele Stanwick pass at 10:24 was the Charlottesville native’s seventh goal of the season, but first since scoring two against Stony Brook on Feb. 25. LaPierre finished the run at 8:40 in transition.

UNC tallied its first goal at 7:04 in the first quarter on a Jimmy Bitter score, cutting into UVa’s lead, 2-1. The Cavaliers and Tar Heels traded goals back and forth until it was 4-2 UVa, courtesy of a Rob Emery missile with 12:35 left in the second quarter. The Tar Heels then held UVa scoreless for over six minutes, a span in which the home team tied the game, 4-4, via goals by Marcus Holman and Jimmy Dunster. The run ended with 6:56 remaining before the intermission. North Carolina did not get any closer the rest of the afternoon. UVa ripped off a 6-0 run, while holding North Carolina scoreless for 20:23. The streak spelled the difference and gave the Cavaliers a 10-4 lead when Van Arsdale found the nylon with 1:49 left in the third quarter, cap-ping the run. Stanwick scored two goals and dished two assists for UVa to lead the run. Bocklet, Emery and Matt Kugler also scored during that span. After a Marcus Holman score with 1:32 left in the third quarter pushed North Carolina’s deficit to five goals, 10-5, Bocklet and Matt White quickly elevated UVa’s lead to 12-5. White’s only score of the game came with 11:40 left in the game. North Carolina managed its best run of the game, scoring four-straight goals to cut into UVa’s lead, 12-8. Back-to-back Chad Tutton goals finished the run with 7:06 left in the game. North Carolina outshot UVa, 41-35, and won a narrow faceoff margin, 14-13. UVa won the battle on the ground, 35-32, and had fewer turnovers, 12-13. Rob Fortunato saved 12 shots in the cage to earn the goalie win.

The No. 7 Duke Blue Devils (11-3, 2-1 ACC) used a 6-0 run in the second half to ele-vate itself past the No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers (10-2, 2-1), 13-5, in front of 7,234 fans inside Klöckner Stadium. Jordon Wolf started the scoring at the 11:16 mark to give Duke the 1-0 lead. The score stayed put for the rest of the first quar-ter, as UVa was held scoreless in a quarter for the first time this season. Matt White tied the game on a Colin Briggs pass with 13:04 left in the second quarter. Duke rattled off three goals in a row in the second quarter to take a 4-1 lead. Chris Bocklet picked up a ground ball and deposit-ed it in the goal off an errant pass to send UVa into the intermission down two goals, 4-2. UVa did not get closer the rest of the eve-ning. Coming out of the break, Duke scored six goals in a row to take a 10-2 lead. The Cavaliers failed to score in the third quarter and Luke Duprey capped the Duke run with a transition goal 40 seconds into the fourth period. Now with 253 career points, Stanwick is tied with Gary Gait for No. 27 all-time in NCAA Division I points. Colin Briggs started quickly for the Cavaliers, scoring 32 seconds into the game to give UVa a 1-0 lead. North Carolina scored back-to-back goals by Ryan Creighton and Jimmy Bitter to stake the Tar Heels to a 2-1 advantage with 4:26 left in the first quarter. Stanwick assisted Briggs and then scored unassisted with 11:54 left in the sec-ond period to give UVa the lead, 3-2. The Cavaliers traded goals back and forth as the game was knotted at 4-4, heading into the intermission. Chris Bocklet started the run and Stanwick finished with three-straight goals. Matt Kugler and Owen Van Arsdale provided assists on Stanwick goals. Matt White assisted Bocklet’s tally. A fourth quarter goal from Chris Bocklet via Steele Stanwick proved to be the differ-ence as the No. 8 Virginia Cavaliers (12-3) out-lasted the No. 12 Princeton Tigers (11-5) dur-ing the NCAA First Round, 6-5, inside Klöckner Stadium. UVa jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, scoring the game’s first two goals. Colin Briggs scored unassisted at 10:54 to start things off. Bocklet scored his first goal of the afternoon on a crisp Matt White helper shortly after, at 9:09. Tom Schreiber put Princeton on the board after Tucker Shanely found the mid-fielder with 3:55 left in the first period. UVa was able to cap the first quarter in transition when Matt Lovejoy picked up a ground ball and led a Cavalier clear. The UVa senior defen-semen found Bobby Hill in transition for the goal with 10 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The assist was the first career point for Lovejoy. The second quarter was a defensive jug-gernaut until Briggs scored the period’s first goal with 3:27 left before the intermission, pushing UVa’s lead to three goals, 4-1. After being held scoreless for 17:29, Princeton found nylon for its second goal of the game when Forest Sonnenfeldt dropped a 17-yard shot from Schreiber. The goal cut UVa’s lead to two goals, 4-2. UVa wasn’t done yet with its first half scoring, which started when Chris Clements caused Schreiber to turn the ball over in the final seconds. Harry Prevas picked up the ground ball and found Chris LaPierre, who chucked the rock 45 yards from the restrain-ing line to Stanwick who was standing at goal line extended. Stanwick grabbed the ball behind Princeton’s Rob Castelo, who missed the jump ball. Stanwick beat Fiorito with five seconds left before the intermission. Princeton stormed out in the third quar-ter, scoring two goals to cut its deficit to one goal, 5-4. Jeff Froccaro scored back-to-back goals, his second coming with six seconds left in the third quarter after a UVa turnover. The Cavaliers failed to score in the third quar-ter. With 7:07 left in the game came the Stanwick to Bocklet connection, giving UVa the 6-4 lead. But Princeton wouldn’t go quiet-ly. Schreiber scored his second goal of the day with 1:19 left to play, cutting UVa’s lead back to one goal, 6-5. Without any timeouts remaining, Princeton won the ensuing faceoff and set the offense for one final assault on the goal. With nine seconds left, Sonnenfeldt from 15 yards out rifled a shot that hit LaPierre straight in the chest. The ball caromed toward the Princeton sideline where the Cavaliers had the backup. With six seconds left, the Cavaliers tossed the ball down the field to secure the triumph.
