The Viking Men’s Hockey Team rounded out the regular season with a split weekend against the Concordia Thunder. Friday evening in Edmonton the men deserved a better fate as they outplayed but dropped a 4-3 loss to the hands of the Thunder. Scott Aucoin, Dane Bonish, and Brad Bourke scored for the Vikings while goaltender Paul Kolida minded the net.

Saturday turned a better fate for the Vikings as they skated to a 5-2 victory at the Encana arena. The team welcomed goaltender Joel Danyluk back into the lineup after missing a couple weeks to injury and he played admirably facing over 20 shots to secure the win. Viking captain Dan Hope ended the evening with two assists which boosted him to be the overall points leader for the ACAC conference. The Vikings begin their quest for a championship repeat this Friday at Encana arena vs the Grant MacEwan Griffins. Game time is set for 7:30, and game three is set for 2 o clock Sunday afternoon if necessary.

This weekend was a particularly special one for the Vikings as it was the final regular season home games for players Chantel Heier, David Shantz, Shayn Bruney, Logan Gray, and Michael Swampy. Fans were encouraged to wear black as a tribute and final send-off to the players.

Friday was a complete domination by the Vikings ladies led by Sydney Purdy’s team high 16 points and Kelsey Lund’s double-double. Ms. Lund also shot a scorching hot 75% from the field. Keyano couldn’t seem to get the ball out of point guard Monique Jarrett’s hands as she led both teams with 6 assists for the night. In a must win game for the men’s team, Keyano proved to be just too much for the Vikings. The effort was there as the men outrebounded Keyano, but their execution and athleticism took the men by surprise.

Saturday was a repeat for the ladies led by double-double machine Kelsey Lund, leading the team in both points and rebounds with 22 and 12. The strong output by the starters allowed for the reserves to get more playing time. With the opportunity to put their skills on display, rookie Shea Jose dropped 14 points and grabbed 8 boards and Hayley Story went off shooting 60 percent from 3 point range for 11 points. The men stayed with the Huskies for most of the game, including a 15 point turn around putting them up 3. Unfortunately the men couldn’t find an answer for Keyano’s defense in the fourth quarter and fell flat. The Vikings were led by David Shantz on Friday with 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Shayn Bruney Saturday with 20 and 8.

The Final Word: Playoff Preview Week 2

by Josh Ryan

Hi folks, hope you enjoyed Family Day and those off during reading week are enjoying the break. This week we continue with our playoff coverage with a look ahead at the weekend and the weeks to come.

Women’s Basketball: The women’s basketball team finished off Keyano in solid fashion and ends the season with a 20-1 record. This clinched first place in the conference in the conference and the heavy favorite going into the Elite Eight, which will be hosted here in Camrose February 28th-March 2nd. This playoff run will also mark the graduation of two vets for the Vikings, 4th year post Chantel Heier and 5th year player-turned-assistant-coach Jessi Tomiyama. Little over a week till the main event folks!

Men’s Basketball: Despite the disappointment of losing their last two regular season games (which as mentioned last week recognized the graduation of several veteran players), the men’s basketball team is looking strong heading into playoffs, achieving the first .500 record under Coach Dave Drabi-uk. They will host the qualifier for the Elite Eight this weekend and faceoff against the Medicine Hat Rattlers. The Vikings defeated them earlier in this season. If victorious, the boys will face winner of divisional rivals Lakeland and N.A.I.T. To find success this weekend, the team will need to get back to shooting around 40%, continue to rebound well and get big performances from both starters and role players.

Curling: Our men’s and mixed curling teams are off to Olds this weekend for the 2013 Curling ACAC Champion-ships. As mentioned last week, the men come in ranked third and winners of 5 of their last 6 matches while the mixed is ranked second. The men’s team will be led by vets Andrew Evans and Chad Szott while the mixed team will look to Alison Owens and Mari McLachlan. Both will look to take home the gold. Szott, Owens and McLachlan will also be graduating this year, making this their last hurrah after taking 6 golds in the last 2 years between the three. Good luck to the guys and gals in Olds!

Hockey: The men’s hockey team finished the regular season with a 19-5-0-4 record, good for third in the con-ference. This sets the boys up for a quarterfinal series against the Grant MacEwan Griffins. While they swept the season series against the Griffins this year, expect the Vikings to spare no punches in their efforts to make the Final Four for the third straight season. The Vikings led the league in goals again this season and had 5 play-

Page 13: Vikings Nation Issue 1.13

ers finish in the top 20 for scoring, led by captain Dan Hope who won tied for the league scoring title with 43 point and finished with 155 career regular season points. This makes Hope the all-time leading scorer in Vikings history and 5th all-time in ACAC Men’s hock-ey. This will be the last hurrah for several of the boys as the team graduates eight players this year. Hope, David Ritz, Casey Rempel, Ryan Cornforth and Quinn Amiel have been with the team since 2008 and Paul Ko-lida (2009-2013), Shawn Jacklin (2010-2013) and Bren-dan Lamb (2011-2013) are also leaving the program.

Good luck to our teams competing this weekend, let’s give them the best support Vikings Nation can offer!
