The women’s team took on

the 7th nationally ranked team,

NAIT, on Friday Nov 23 and

came out successful! They had

a strong first 3 quarters, build-

ing a 24 point lead. However, in the fourth quarter, NAIT

managed to close the gap due

to strong rebounding. The Vi-

kings ended up winning the

game 6-55. Taryn Story helped

leader her team to this win

and received Player of the

Game. Despite the win, the

Vikings were not totally satis-

fied with their performance on

Friday. This became apparent

in the Saturday night game

which was played at home. The

Vikings came out hungry in the

first quarter and maintained

their intensity all the way until

the final buzzer, winning the

game 87-52. The entire team

contributed with no person

scoring less than four points.

Although it was a strong team

effort, Richelle Wagner played

an outstanding game and was

named player of the game. The

Mens’ Vikings also entered the

final weekend of first semester

action with a date with the NAIT Ooks. This is a matchup

that is quickly escalating into a

divisional rivalry, after these

squads met up in pre-season

when the Vikings came out vic-

torious. The first of the two

games were played in NAIT’s

barn on Friday evening. The

teams played neck and neck,

with no team taking anymore

than a single difit lead the

whole way through. NAIT

gained an edge on the glass,

winning the rebound battle and

grabbing 52 rebounds to Au-

gustana’s 37. The game ended

up going to extra time. The

Vikings lost a heart breaker

with the scoreboard reading

99-97 in favor of NAIT. Lee

Danderfer hooped 21 points

which earned him player of the

game honors. After Friday’s

loss, Augustana had revenge on

their mind, hungry to gain some

momentum going into Christ-

mas break. The team made some adjustments to slow

down NAIT’s leading-scorer,

Mattieu Johnson, who had his

way with Viking defenders in

the Friday night affair. The

crowd on hand acted as the

sixth man, feeding the home

team with some much needed

energy. The Vikes controlled

the tempo and cruised to a 78-

69 win. It was a real team effort

and Jamin Lockert was awarded

player of the game with 9

points and 11 big rebounds.

That win ends a semester

where the Vikings went 5-4,

which seats them fifth in the

league-wide standings and look-

ing forward to a playoff push in

the second half of the year.

The Augustana men's hockey team

had a home and home series this

past weekend against the Concor-

dia Thunder. The crowd at Fridays

game at the Encana Arena saw the

Vikings explode offensively, scor-

ing 10 goals in a 10-2 victory. Mat-thew Foster was the player of the

game for the Vikings and Paul Kol-

ida had the win in net. Thanks to

the Augustana men's volleyball

team, who were great in the press

box on the sirens and horns! It

was noticed and appreciated by

all of the players. It was also en-

joyed by everyone in the crowd.

Saturdays match up was a differ-

ent story for the hockey team

because they had to battle back

from a two goal deficit to end up with a 3-3 tie. The team

pressed hard in the third period.

Due to inconsistent officiating,

the Vikes had two goals called

back which would have changed

the outcome of the game com-

pletely. Nonetheless, it was a 3

point weekend for the men

and the Vikes still hold 2nd

place in the league. Kenny

Bradley was Saturday’s game

star and Joel Danyluk re-

ceived the tie in net.

Next weekend marks the last two games before Christmas

break. The team plays a

home and home with the

Portage Voyageurs. On Satur-

day, Dec 1 the Vikings will be

playing in Camrose at 7:30.

Rugby At Augustana?

For those of you that may not know, the ACAC is considering rugby

as a potential varsity sport.

Augustana ins looking for people interested in playing rugby for the future school year.

Rugby is an all-inclusive sport; there is no one ideal body type that will yield success. Within

that fifteen person squad, the team utilizes and embraces those body differences to their ad-

vantage.

We are specifically looking for women, to start a women’s team to create balance between

sports for each gender. However, we are looking for men as well, to start a club rugby team

and to expand skills for a possible future men’s squad. To get rugby at Augustana, we need

student numbers to get a team started, ready to play in the fall.

No experience is necessary, as rugby is a sport

that can be taught to everyone!

Next semester we will have a few clinics, one being in the first two

weeks of January: SNOW RUGBY!

Everyone interested, please contact Tamara Zembal

By Josh Ryan

Hi folks, hope you are managing

with school, work and the pres-

sure of Christmas coming up

soon.

This weekend I had the oppor-

tunity to do the play-by-play for the basketball games this weekend

against the N.A.I.T. Ooks. Being

around sports allows you some

great glimpses of life, but behind

the booth is a view I am not used

to. So this week, I will share some

sights and sounds from Saturday

night.

While calling the action, you

start to tune out the sur-

rounding noise of the gym.

Once you get a moment’s

break, the volume rushes

back and catches you off

guard. No matter what your

role is when you are in the

Augustana gym, you get to

relish in hearing the cheers

of the home crowd.

Ever since I first watched

the NBA on TNT when I

lived in the States, I have

always wanted an appropri-

ate situation to use the cli-

ché, “From Down Town!”

Saturday night that small

dream was fulfilled. Thanks,

Lee Danderfer.

It’s also a lot of fun watching the crowd. I don’t get to

enjoy that view as a fan or

even as a player as I tend

to tune things out during

my competition. Shout

out to the young that

were on my far left and

getting the Ooks during

free-throws. A lot of fun watching the

girls play, as I haven’t seen

more than the 4th quarter

in any of their games for a

year now. Despite a slow

start against N.A.I.T.’s en-

ergetic defense, they put

the game on ice in a hur-

ry, showing why they are

ranked 4th in the country.

People who have gotten

used to seeing Taryn Sto-

ry raining jumpers will

have plenty to look for-

ward to even after Taryn

graduates with the way

younger sibling Hayley was

knocking down shots in

the second half.

Kelsey Lund’s block in the

first half is one of the big-

gest blocks I have seen

live ever. Someone get

that on YouTube!

The guys’ game was defi-

nitely more down to the

wire. Glad to see the guys

pull out the win.

Hearing Coach Drabiuk’s

banter on the sideline with N.A.I.T. coach Ben

Julius was one of the best

moments of the night.

Loved how two guys

who are obviously com-

petitive still manage to

joke around as they do

outside of basketball.

I really loved the halftime competition

with the young kids. As

with the Timbits hockey

tradition, it’s a great

opportunity to see our

youth having fun.

When doing play-by-

play, you are only as

good as your color

man. For that, I had a

great one in Paul Kjos.

Thanks for having my

back and making things

fun.

That’s all for now, hope you

guys enjoyed the job Paul and

I did announcing the game!

Hope to see you guys this

weekend when we play Med

Hat.
