    The 2014 Leadership Conference Gives the Chapter and the Officers Direction for the Future

  • Minutes of July Membership Meeting!The meeting was called to order by Vice-president Peterson at 1900 hours with a pledge of allegiance and a moment of silence observed for POW/MIA and those still serving in harms way for our nation. Officers present were Vice-president Peterson, Treasurer Hansen, and Secretary Lavelle. The minutes of the June meeting were accepted as published in the chapter newsletter. Harold Hansen informed the members of the current status of the chapter coffers. Members in distress the past month include Bruce Cheek, Clarke Barnes, and Al Kirk. The honor guard took part in the funeral for member Harold Abdo at the All-Veterans Memorial in Davenport Memorial Cemetery. Honor guard members took part in the Bix 7 in Davenport and also chapter members were present at Brady and Kirkwood Boulevard with a banner representing Vietnam Veterans of America. The Honor guard will take part in the HyVee Youth Triathlon on Saturday morning August 16th at the Bettendorf YMCA on Devils Glen. Larry Witt presented the current membership numbers to the chapter. Ed Gaudet presented the budget for the coming year that was developed by the Finance Committee, the chapter members moved to accept the budget. Greg Paulline moved to donate $250 for the NAMI Walk, the members passed this request. Lyle Peterson requested the chapter assist with the LeClaire Freedom Rock, this request passed. A letter from Gary McDermott requested financial assistance to participate in the Wheel Chair Games, the request passed by a vote of the members. The chapter will have an honor guard presence and members will assist with the Midwest Corvette Clubs Car Show in LeClaire on September 6th. There will be a 50/50 that we will help with and chapter will receive all of the registration fees from the Midwest Corvette Club through their Vettes Helping Vets program. The chapter will participate in a family picnic for the IANG unit located at Brady Street Armory on September 7th, to be held at the Rock Island Arsenal. Bill Matthews informed the members that Davenport Schools will fly the POW/MIA flag on designated days in the four high schools in Davenport. Greg Paulline informed the members that we have sold 126 of the 150 POW/MIA shirts and that we are planning to order more for future sales. The members were reminded that we are going to do a brat and hot dog sale at Erikson Chevrolet in Milan on August 16th from 10:00 A.M. until 3:00. The car show is being sponsored by Midwest Corvette Club. Ed Hildebrand will lead a group of members to Iowa City to visit patients at the VA Hospital on Thursday August 7th, they will meet at the McDonalds next to the Machine Shed at 7:00. Currently Jim Owens is working on possible visits to three Nursing Homes in the area that house veterans as part of our community service efforts. Ed Gaudet made a motion that we join in with Miller Time Bowling for a Nine Pin Bowling Tournament. The owners of the bowling alley will host the tournament as well as a bake sale that will benefit the chapter. The members approved the motion. Members were reminded of future events that the chapter will take part in, September 13th is the Seabees Spaghetti Dinner at the American Legion Post 26 on 35th Street in Davenport. On November 7th & 8th the chapter will host the Vietnam Veterans of America Region 6 Meeting at the Wild Rose Casino in Clinton, Iowa. Invited speakers for this event include LTG. Michael S. Tucker, Commanding General, First United States Army, John Rowan, President of Vietnam Veterans of America, and John Margowski, Director of Region 6 Vietnam Veterans of America.     There was much to learn in W i c h i t a d u r i n g t h e conference sessions. Greg Paulline and John Lavelle attended the sessions and have sent reports to all the members who have provided their emails to the chapter.

    There have been a number of request dealing with where the patches and ribbons should be placed on the uniform for the honor guard. I have included this for those of you who have an interest in becoming part of the honor guard. The uniform can be purchase at the Military Surplus Store in Iowa City or may through any of the sites located on the links found on the chapter web site. Boots, pistol belt, and other items may be purchased in this same manner. Remember to keep all of your receipts so that you may be reimbursed for your purchases.
