  The first demand for a separate state of Uttarakhand arose in 1897. In 1994, the demand for a separate state took full form that led to a mass movement resulting in the formation of the Uttarakhand state in 2000.

  It is known as the “Land of Gods” or “Dev Bhumi”. It was named ‘Uttaranchal’ during its foundation. Later, it was renamed to Uttarakhand in 2007. The capital of the state is Dehradun. The high court of the state is located in Nainital.

National Education Day

  India celebrates National Education Day on November 11. It is also called Rashtriya Shiksha Diwas. The day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. He was the first Education Minister of India.

  It is being observed every year from 2016, on the day of Dhanwantri Jayanti.

  The Potential role of Ayurveda in the management of the COVID-19 pandemic will be the focus of this year’s ‘Ayurveda Day’ observation.

  National Press Day is observed on November 16 every year to celebrate free and responsible press in India.

  It also commemorates the day when the Press Council of India started functioning.

National Milk Day

  In India, November 26 is celebrated as National Milk Day, since 2014, to commemorate the birthday of the father of India’s White Revolution, Dr Verghese Kurien (also nicknamed as Milkman of India).

  The day was fixed by all the dairy majors of the country including the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), the Indian Dairy Association (IDA), along with 22 state-level milk federations.

Constitution Day

  Constitution Day is celebrated every year on 26 November to mark the anniversary of the formal adoption of the Constitution of India on this day in 1949.

  The constitution of India came into effect on 26 January 1950.

  It is celebrated to bring awareness about the Constitution of India and to pay tribute to India’s first Law Minister Dr.B.R.Ambedkar.

Constitution of India:   It is longest written Constitution of the

world.   It was completed in 2 years, 11 months

and 17 days.   At present, it has 22 parts, 448 articles,

12 schedules and a Preamble.   Originally it was written by Prem

Behari Narain Raizada.   Dr.B.R.Ambedkar was the chairman

of the drafting committee of the Constitution. He is also recognized as “Father of the constitution of India”.

  The other members of the Drafting Committee are Alladi Krishnaswamy Ayyar, N.Gopalaswami, K.M. Munshi, Mohammad Saadulla, B.L.Mitter and D.P.Khaitan.

1.2 Defence, National Security and TerrorismFirst phase of four-nation Malabar naval exercise kicks off

  The 24th edition of the Malabar naval exercise is scheduled to be held in two phases in November 2020 with the first phase set to kick off.

  Phase 1 of the exercise Malabar 20 involving participation by Indian Navy (IN), United States Navy (USN), Japan Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF), and Royal Australian Navy (RAN) is set to commence off Visakhapatnam in Bay of Bengal from 3-6 November, 2020.

INS Airavat   As part of ‘Mission Sagar-II’, Indian

Naval Ship Airavat entered Port Sudan on 02 November 2020. The Government of India is providing assistance to Foreign Countries to overcome natural calamities and COVID-19 pandemic, and towards the same INS Airavat is carrying a consignment of 100 Tonnes of food aid for the people of Sudan.

  Mission Sagar-II, follows the first ‘Mission Sagar’ undertaken in May-June 2020, wherein India reached out to Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles, Madagascar and Comoros, and provided food aid and medicines. As part of Mission Sagar-II, Indian Naval Ship Airavat will deliver food aid to Sudan, South Sudan, Djibouti and Eritrea.

  Mission Sagar-II, is in line with the Prime Minister’s vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region ‘SAGAR’ and highlights the importance accorded by India to relations with her maritime neighbours and further strengthens the existing bond.

  The Indian Navy is progressing this mission in close coordination with the Ministries of Defence and External Affairs, and other agencies of the Government of India.

Indian Coast Guard Ship C-452 to be commissioned in Indian Navy

  The ICGS C-452, designed and built by L&T is to be commissioned in the Indian Navy. The ship was indigenously built in India under the Make in India initiative.

  Earlier, Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh had commissioned the ICGS Sachet and two other interceptor boats namely C-451 and C-450 in Goa.

Indian Coast Guard   It is an armed force and maritime law

enforcement agency. It was established in 1978 under the Coast Guard Act, 1978. IT operates under Ministry of Defence.

  The ICG works in close operation with the State Police Forces, Department of Revenue, Department of Fisheries and Indian Navy.

  The four main regional headquarters of Indian Coast Guard are located in Port Blair, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Gandhinagar.

Nagchaudhuri Committee   In 1960s the sea borne smuggling activities

increased in India. The Nagchaudhuri Committee was set up to find solution to the problem. In 1971, the committee recommended to create a patrolling service to safeguard India’s vast Coast line.

Rustamji Committee

f It was set up in 1974. It was this committee that recommended to set up the Indian Coast Guard Service.

DRDO: Advanced Version of Pinaka Rocket test fired successfully

  The enhanced version is to achieve longer range as compared to the earlier version. This is to replace the current version of Pinaka Mk-1 system deployed along the borders of Pakistan and China.

  The Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher system called the Shiva’s bow can fire 12 rockets in 44 seconds. One single battery of Pinaka system consists of six launch vehicles. They are accompanied by command post, links with network-based systems and radar. A battery can neutralize an area of 1 km by 1 km.

  The Pinaka Mark-1, that is currently being used by the Army has a range of 38 km. On the other hand, the current tested version, enhanced Pinaka Mark-1 has a range of 45 km.

  The Pinaka Mk-II has a range of 60 km and the Guided Pinaka system has a range of 75 km. the Guided Pinaka has an integrated control, navigation and guidance system.

  It is guided by the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System.

India Conducts Tri-Service Combat Exercise “Bull Strike” at Teressa Island

  Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) conducted a three-day Tri-Service Combat Exercise code named “Bull Strike” from November 3-5, 2020 at Teressa Island in Nicobar Group of Island.

  The exercise saw participation from three service components of ANC, elements of Indian Army’s Parachute Brigade, MARCOS (Marine Commando Force) and Special Forces.

  The exercise focused on interoperability and synergy among three services – Army, Navy and Air Force to maximize combat potential.

US supercarrier Nimitz to join Vikramaditya for QUAD Malabar exercise off Goa coast

  Indian Navy’s flagship Vikramaditya and US supercarrier Nimitz along with two destroyers of the Australian and Japanese navies will conduct full-spectrum exercises off the coast of Goa as part of Malabar war games from November 17 to 20.

  The two carrier groups, with MiG-29K fighters on board Vikramaditya and F-18 fighters on board Nimitz, will participate in war games, while the involvement of the two other countries, which are, like India and the US, members of the Quad grouping, will strengthen multi-operability in full domain exercises.

Shipping Ministry renamed Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, announces PM Modi

  Prime Minister Narendra Modi renamed the Ministry of Shipping as the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways. Prime Minister Narendra Modi renamed the Ministry of Shipping as the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways.

  The decision to change the name of the Shipping Ministry is part of Modi government’s efforts to revamp the ports and create world-class Inland Water Transport.

Model of Anti-Satellite Missile system inaugurated at DRDO

  The Defence Minister Shri Raj Nath Singh inaugurated the anti-Satellite Missile System at Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO) headquarters, New Delhi.

  The DRDO successfully conducted anti-satellite missile test at Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha.

  India tested its Anti-Satellite weapon in 2019 under its operation code named “Operation Shakti”. The ASAT test used the interceptor, Prithvi Defence Vehicle Mark II to conduct the test. The interceptor was developed under Indian Ballisti Missile Programme.

  Prithvi was a modified anti-ballistic missile. It was developed under Project XSV-1. The test made India the fourth country after US, Russia and China to test the anti-satellite weapon.

  The missile struck a test satellite at 283 kilometres in the low earth orbit and made ASAT test successful.

DRDO develops Fire Detection and Suppression System

  The DRDO has developed fire detection and suppression system for passenger buses. The technology can detect fire in buses in less than 30 seconds. Also, it can extinguish the fire in 60 Seconds.

  The technology was developed by the Delhi based Centre for fire explosive and environment safety of DRDO. The fire detection and suppression system consist of a water tank of 80 litres of capacity, network of tubing with 16 atomizers and 6.8 kilograms of Nitrogen cylinder. The nitrogen cylinder installed is pressurized to 200 bar.

  The system has an aerosol generator with which the fire suppression can be achieved within 5 seconds. The system has been developed as a defence spin off Technology.

  Though, there is fire threat in all vehicles, the system has been specially developed for sleeper coaches and school buses.

Indian Navy launches 5th Scorpene Submarine “Vagir”

  The Indian Navy has launched the fifth Scorpene submarine “Vagir” at Mazagon Dock of south Mumbai. The submarine is capable of taking missions such as anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, mine laying, intelligence gathering and area surveillance.

  Vagir is a part of six Kalvari class submarine that is being built in India.

  These submarines were designed by the French Navy and an energy company DCNS.

  The six submarines were built under Project-75 of Indian Navy.

  Vagir has been named after Sand Fish. It is a deep-sea predator in the Indian Ocean.

  The first Vagir was commissioned in 1973. The first Vagir submarine was from Russia.

India Successfully test fires QRSAM system off Odisha Coast

  India successfully test-fired the Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) system off the coast of Balasore in Odisha.

  The system achieved a major milestone by a direct hit on to a Banshee Pilotless target aircraft at medium range and medium altitude.

  Indian forces have carried out at least seven tests earlier of the missile system.

  The QRSAM system has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in association with Bharat Electronics Limited and Bharat Dynamics Limited for the Indian Army.

  The system is capable of detecting and tracking targets on the move and engaging target with short halts. The system is designed to give air defence coverage against strike columns of the Indian Army.

Second Phase of Malabar Exercise commences

  The second phase of Malabar Exercise is to be held between November 17, 2020 and November 20, 2020 in the Northern Arabian Sea. The first phase of Malabar exercise was held between November 3, 2020 and November 6, 2020 in Bay of Bengal.

  The exercise is important because the four countries together form the QUAD grouping. Under the recent QUAD group meeting held in October 2020, the countries agreed on free and open Indo-Pacific Region.

  These exercises include cross-deck flying operations and advanced air defence exercises by MiG-29K fighters of Vikramaditya and F-18 fighters and E2C Hawkeye from Nimitz. In addition, advanced surface and anti-submarine warfare exercises and weapon firings will also be undertaken to further enhance inter-operability and synergy between the four friendly navies.

  The navies of the four countries exercising together follows India green-lighting the participation of Australia in the Malabar exercises that first started in 1992 with the Indian and US navies. The Japanese navy was included in 2015.

Indian Navy receives 9th –P-8I Surveillance Plane from US at INS Hansa, Goa Naval Airbase

  Indian Navy received the 9th Poseidon 8I maritime surveillance aircraft from the United States (US) at the INS Hansa, Goa Naval Airbase.

  The P-8I Aircraft receive on November 18, 2020 is the first of the Four Additional planes ordered by India after completion of the Initial order for eight aircrafts.

  In 2016, India signed a deal of USD 1.1 Billion with the US for Four Additional P-8I Aircrafts.

  The P-8I is developed and produced by Boeing Defense, Space & Security (US-based).

  It is capable of long-range anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, Surveillance and surveillance in support of broad area, maritime and littoral operations.

Rajnath Singh Launches Portal for Defence Land Management System

  Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched a portal for defence land management system (LMS) that is expected to bring greater transparency, efficiency and speed in dealing with land management matters.

Indo-Thai CORPAT, Coordinated Patrol held

  The 30th Indo-Thai CORPAT is being held between Indian Navy and Royal Thai Navy from November 18, 2020 to November 20, 2020. INS Karmuk, HTMS Kraburi along with the Dornier maritime aircraft are to participate in the CORPAT. The countries have been holding CORPAT along the International Maritime Boundary Line twice a year since 2005.

SIMBEX 2020: India-Singapore Naval Exercise

  The Indian and Singapore Navy are to hold maritime exercise SIMBEX-20 in the Andaman Sea between November 23, 2020 and November 25, 2020. The exercise is being conducted between the countries since 1994. The exercise aims to enhance mutual inter-operability between the countries.

About the Exercise   The Indian Navy ships to participate in

the exercise are destroyer Rana along with Chetak helicopter, corvettes Kamorta and Karmuk. Also, submarine Sindhuraj and P81 reconnaissance aircrafts are to participate in the exercise.

SITMEX-20: India, Thailand and Singapore trilateral Naval exercise held

  Indian Navy teaming up with its counterparts from the US, Japan and Australia for the Malabar exercise in the Bay of Bengal and thArabian Sea, the Navy has joined with forces from Thailand and Singapore for a trilateral exercise in the Andaman Sea.

  India’s naval ships including the indigenously built ASW (anti submarine warfare) corvette Kamorta and missile corvette Karmuk are participating in the second edition of the two-day India, Singapore and Thailand Trilateral Maritime Exercise SITMEX-20.

  The first edition of SITMEX was hosted by Indian Navy and conducted off Port Blair in September 2019.

conducted to enhance mutual inter-operability and imbibing best practices between IN(Indian Navy), Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and Royal Thai Navy (RTN).

India test-fires land-attack version of BrahMos missile

  India successfully test-fired a land-attack version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands territory at 10 am on November 24, 2020.

  The supersonic cruise missile successfully hit its target, which was on another island. The test-firing was conducted by the Indian Army.

  The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is the world’s fastest operational system in its class and recently DRDO has extended the range of the missile system from the existing 298 km to around 450 km.

DRDO flags off first Varunastra, a heavy weight torpedo

  Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO, G. Satheesh Reddy, flagged off the first Varunastra, the heavy weight torpedo, which was delivered to the Indian Navy, at a ceremony held at BDL, Visakhapatnam unit.

  Varunastra has been designed and developed by NSTL, Visakhapatnam.

  BDL, being the production agency, is manufacturing Varunastra at its Visakhapatnam unit for the Indian Navy. This product is also being offered for export.

Russia test-fired Tsirkon hypersonic missile in the Arctic

  Russia successfully test-fired a Tsirkon hypersonic cruise missile in the Arctic. The frigate Admiral Gorshkov in the White Sea fired a Tsirkon hypersonic cruise missile, hitting a naval target 450 km away in the Barents Sea at a speed of over Mach 8.

  In early January, the same frigate test-fired a Tsirkon missile for the first time, striking a ground target over 500 km away.

  Last month, the warship deployed in the White Sea destroyed a naval target in the Barents Sea with a Tsirkon missile.

Indian Army launches cycling expedition in Gujarat & Rajasthan

  Konark Corps of Indian Army has launched a 1971 kilometres cycling expedition in Gujarat and Rajasthan to commemorate the commencement of the Golden Jubilee Victory Celebrations of Indian Armed Forces in the Indo-Pak War of 1971.

  1971 Kilometers ‘Swarnim Vijay Varsh Cyclothon’ across Gujarat & Rajasthan has been joined by the relay teams of 20 participants each of the various Army Formations across the two states.

Shaktikanta Das Chairs 40th SAARC Central Bank Governors Meet

  The 40th Meeting of the SAARCFINANCE Governors’ Group was held virtually, under the Chairmanship of Shri Shaktikanta Das, Governor, RBI.

  The meeting was attended by the Governors from SAARC central banks. During the meeting, Mr Das also inaugurated the SAARCFINANCE Sync, a closed user group secure communication network.

  In his opening remarks, Governor Shri Das highlighted the close partnership and co-operation among the member countries in jointly fighting the pandemic.

  The group took stock of the macroeconomic situation in the SAARC region; discussed the current SAARCFINANCE initiatives; and the way ahead.

  The Governors reaffirmed their commitment to continued co-operation and sharing of central bank experiences.

  SAARCFINANCE is a network of central bank governors and finance secretaries of the SAARC region.

  Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to come face-to-face virtually at the annual

summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) on November 10.

  The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced Modi will lead the Indian delegation at the summit.

  The prime minister will lead the Indian delegation to the 20th summit of the SCO Council of heads of state which will be held in the virtual format on Nov 10. The meeting will be chaired by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

PM Modi to cochair India-ASEAN Summit along with Vietnamese PM

  Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to cochair India-ASEAN summit along with the Vietnamese Prime Minister Ngyuyen Xuan Phuc. ASEAN is Association of South East Asian Nations.

  The summit is to review the status of India-ASEAN strategic partnership. It will focus on key areas such as maritime cooperation, connectivity, trade and commerce, capacity building and education. ASEAN is considered as an influential grouping as the ASEAN region has high potential for upcoming markets. The region is expected to grow at an average of 5.2% by 2022. It is to become the world largest single market by 2030. Therefore, India, China, Japan and Australia are competing with each other to grab their place in the market.

  The ASEAN summit is being held amid China’s aggressive behaviour in the South China sea.

PM Modi Virtually Attends 12th BRICS Summit

  Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually addressed the 12th Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa (BRICS) Summit on 17 November 2020.

  The theme of the 12th edition of BRICS Summit was “Global stability, shared security and innovative growth”.

  The Summit was held under the Chairmanship of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

  The key issues discussed by the leaders included intra-BRICS cooperation and other key issues in the global context, like the reform of the multilateral system, measures to mitigate the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, cooperation in Counter Terrorism, trade, health, energy and people to people exchanges.

  India will be taking over the Chairmanship of the BRICS in 2021 and host the 13th BRICS Summit in 2021.

  It would be the third time that India will take over the BRICS Presidency since its

WHO praises UP government for COVID-19 management

  The World Health Organisation (WHO) has praised the Uttar Pradesh government for its COVID-19 management strategy terming it as a good example for other states to follow.

  The UP government’s strategic response to COVID-19 by stepping up contact tracing efforts is exemplary and can serve as a good example for other states,” Roderico Ofrin, WHO Country Representative, announced in a statement issued here by the state government.

15th G20 Leaders’ Summit (November 21-22, 2020)

  Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will be attending the 15th G20 Summit chaired by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, under the theme “Realising the Opportunities of 21st Century for All” on 21-22 November 2020. The meeting will be held in a virtual format.

  The United Nations humanitarian chief has released 25 million US dollars from its emergency fund to support women-led organisations that prevent and respond to gender-based violence.

  India will host the 19th meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of Government in virtual format on 30 November 2020.

  It will be the first time that a Summit-level Meeting will be held under the Chairmanship of India, since it gained full -membership of the organization in 2017.

  The Hon’ble Vice President of India Shri Venkaiah Naidu will be the chair of the Summit.

Birsa Munda’s contribution to freedom movement

  Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to tribal leader Birsa Munda on his birth anniversary on Sunday and said his contribution to the freedom movement and social harmony will always inspire the countrymen.

  Birsa Munda, who belonged to the Munda tribe, was born on November 15 in 1875. During the British rule in the late 19th century, he spearheaded an Indian tribal religious Millenarian movement across the tribal belt of modern-day Bihar and Jharkhand.

  Physicist Masatoshi Koshiba, who shared 2002 Nobel prize for the detection of cosmic neutrinos, passed away.

  Koshiba’s most famous work involved detecting neutrinos from a distant supernova explosion using a vast detector based in a mine in central Japan.

  Koshiba, a distinguished professor at the University of Tokyo. Koshiba devised the construction of giant underground chambers to detect neutrinos, elusive particles that stream from the sun.

dependent territories during her epic journey. Her trip ended in Sydney, Australia on February 13, 2020, shortly before coronavirus-related travel restrictions went into effect.

  The 103rd birth anniversary was observed of India’s first woman Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi on November 19, 2020.

  Mahajan, resident of Nashik in Maharashtra, covered the distance of 3,600 km from Srinagar to Kanyakumari on bicycle in eight days, seven hours and 38 minutes.

  Om’s father Hitendra and uncle Mahendra had won the RAAM as a team of two in 2015. They also hold a record for the fastest ride along the Golden Quadrilateral.

  His next challenge is RAAM, often described as the toughest cycle race on the planet. To finish it successfully, Om will have to ride 4,800 km within 12 days.

India will now host the U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022. The FIFA has also cancelled Women’s U-20 World Cup, which was scheduled to be held in Costa Rica.

Archery Association of India has been recognized as National Sports Federation by the Sports Ministry

  Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has recognized the Archery Association of India as a National Sports Federation (NSF).

  Government of India had withdrawn the AAI recognition on 7 December 2012 due to failure to conduct election according to the National Sports Development Code of India, 2011.

  Archery Association of India stated that it will help in the development of sports in the country and it will help people who are preparing for the Tokyo Olympics.

  The recognition will be valid for one year.

  The International Children’s Peace Prize is an initiative of the international children’s rights organization KidsRights. From an impressive 142 applicants from 42 countries, the KidsRights’ Expert Committee selected Sadat Rahman from Bangladesh as winner.

  On the occasion of UMANG app completing three years, Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad unveiled the newly instituted UMANG Awards for partner departments of the Centre and states, based on average transactions in the past six months across all services.

  Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has been conferred with Platinum Partner Award for registering more than 25 lakh transactions on UMANG app, the statement added. As the majority of the EPFO members are from the socio-economically disadvantaged sections, an accessible and affordable solution was needed to reach out to crores of EPFO subscribers.

Kodumanal Excavation   The High Court has directed the

government to take immediate action to find out the age of the Tamil Nadu script found in the Kodumanal excavation for the first time.

  For the first time in excavations, Tamil script has been found. In Kodumanal excavations, the letters( Aa and Ee) tamil scripts have been found in Tamil Nadu. In this context, the Madurai branch of the High Court has raised a barrage of questions regarding the excavation work.

Chola period inscription found in Tirupathur describes war, charity

  A Chola period inscription was discovered in a far off village in Tirupathur has thrown light on wars fought by a Chola King and charity done by a local village head for priests 1,000 years ago.

  A team of archaeological enthusiasts led by A Prabu, professor of Tamil, Sacred Heart College, Tirupathur, and retired professor of ancient history and archaeology of R Sekar deciphered the inscription with the help of epigraphist S Rajagopalan.

  It belonged to the Chola King Virarajendra Chola whose period dates back to 1063-1070 CE.

  The inscription is a eulogy on the King and describes certain wars he and his captain had fought.

  300 kuzhi (roughly 43,000 sq. ft.) land was donated to a water body in the village.

  Nepal President, Bidya Devi Bhandari has released a special pictorial anthology on Mahatma Gandhi to mark the 151st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

  This anthology is written in the Nepali language.

  The book was launched at a special function held at in Kathmandu in the presence of Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Vinay Mohan Kwatra.

Indian-American Kash Patel named Chief of Staff to Acting US Defence Secretary

  Indian-American Kash Patel has been named as the Chief of Staff to the Acting US Defence Secretary Chris Miller, the Pentagon has announced.

  Patel replaces Jen Stewart, who resigned earlier. He is currently on the National Security Council staff.

  He had previously served as senior counsel for Counterterrorism at the House Permanent Select Committee.

CAG Murmu elected as External Auditor of Inter Parliamentary Union in Geneva

  Comptroller & Auditor General of India Girish Chandra Murmu has been elected as theExternal Auditor of Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) Geneva for three years.

  GC Murmu will take charge of this position from Supreme Audit Institution of Switzerland. The election took place at the virtual meeting of IPU’s 284th session, which is a 179 countries Parliamentarians body. The IPU also has 13 Associate Members.

NMCG organises three-day virtual ‘Ganga Utsav 2020’

  Ganga Utsav-2020 has been organised by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) jointly with the Ministry of Jal Shakti. The three-day-long Ganga Utsav-2020 has been organised from 02 to 04 November 2020, virtually amidst COVID-19 precautions.

  The annual event is organised to spread awareness about river Ganga and the need to keep the river clean and rejuvenated. The 2020 edition marks the 12th anniversary of Ganga being accorded the status of National River, on 4th November 2008.

Udyam Scheme: 11 lakh MSMEs registered

  The Government of India announced that over 11 lakh MSMEs have registered on the new online system of Udyam Registration. It was launched in July 2020.

  MSME schemes

  The Government of India has been bringing in several measures to help the MSMEs thrive during the COVID-19 pandemic. Atma Nirbhar Bharat package mainly focused on MSMEs.

  More than 40-60% of the MSME were facing closure due to COVID-19. They were already under stress due to the implementation of GST and Demonetisation in 2016.

India’s first solar-based Integrated Multi-Village Water Supply Project

  The Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat launched India’s first solar-based Integrated Multi-Village Water Supply Project (IMVWSP) in Arunachal Pradesh on 06 November 2020.

  The solar-based lift water supply project is ‘first of its kind’ in the country, and has been commissioned at a cost of Rs 28.50 crore. However, such projects will be carried out in other parts of the country too.

  The project would provide drinking water to 17,480 people in 39 villages of Lower Dibang Valley district in Arunachal Pradesh.

2.2 Latest Court VerdictsSupreme Court orders setting up of National Tribunals Commission

  The Supreme Court has passed directions for setting up of the National Tribunals Commission for appointment of members in various tribunals.

  A three-judge bench of Justices L. Nageswara Rao, Hemant Gupta and S Ravindra Bhat has directed Centre to constitute a separate wing in the Ministry of Finance to deal with the appointments till the Commission is set up.

  To stop the dependence of tribunals on their parent departments for routing their requirements and to ensure speedy administrative decision making, as an interregnum measure, we direct that there should be a separate ‘tribunals wing’ established in the Ministry of Finance, Government of India to take up, deal with and finalize requirements of all

the tribunals till the National Tribunals Commission is established.

  The Centre shall make serious efforts to provide suitable housing to the chairman or president and other members of the tribunals and if it is not possible, the government shall pay the chairman or president and vice-chairman or vice-president an amount of ` 1.5 lakh per month as house rent allowance and ` 1.25 lakh per month for other members with effect from January 1, 2021.

  In Madhya Pradesh, the Panna Tiger Reserve has been included in the ‘World Network of Biosphere Reserves’ list of the UNESCO.

  Currently, Panna Tiger Reserve is home to 54 tigers.

  This is the 12th biosphere reserve from India to be included in the ‘World Network of Biosphere Reserves’, and third from Madhya Pradesh, after Pachmarhi and Amarkantak.

  The UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) covers internationally designated protected areas (known as biosphere reserves) that demonstrate a balanced relationship between people and nature (like encourage sustainable development).

Super Typhoon Goni hits the Philippines

  Super Typhoon Goni, claimed as the world’s strongest typhoon of 2020 has hit the south of the Philippines’ main island of Luzon.

  Goni is one of the strongest storms to hit the Philippines since 2013’s Haiyan, which killed more than 6,300 people.

Cyclone Nivar   The district administration has advised

Pilibhit Tiger Reserve gets global award ‘TX2’ for doubling tiger population

  The Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (PTR), situated in the Pilibhit district and Shahjahanpur District of Uttar Pradesh has won the first-ever international award, TX2, along with the state Forest department, for doubling the number of tigers.

  *TX2 stands for ‘Tigers times two’, signalling the goal to double wild tigers.

  PTR is the first to receive the award among all the 13 tiger range countries. (India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, Thailand and Vietnam.)

  It achieved the goal of doubling the tiger’s population in just four years, against the target of 10 years.

  In 2014, PTR had 25 tigers which went up to 65 in 2018.

  The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) in partnership with American India Foundation, Dell Technologies and University of Mumbai has launched ”Project Future Ready” to equip students with career skills.

  The project is set to impact over 1 lakh students in Mumbai and Delhi-NCR, of which 60 per cent are females.

  The project aims to provide skills development for these students through career mentoring, leveraging online skilling platforms and providing market aligned skills training for employability and inculcating entrepreneurial mind-set.

Fifteenth Finance Commission Report   The Fifteenth Finance Commission

headed by N K Singh is to submit its report the President of India.

  The recommendations made by the commission are as follows

f The Commission has recommended that the states shall get 41% of central tax revenues. Earlier, the

fourteenth Finance Commission had recommended 42%.

Moody’s raises India’s 2020 GDP forecast to -8.9%

  Moody’s raised India’s GDP forecast for the calendar year 2020 upwards to -8.9 per cent contraction from -9.6 per cent contraction forecast earlier. Similarly, India’s GDP forecast for the calendar year 2021 has been revised upwards to 8.6 per cent from 8.1 per cent projected earlier.

stimulus package, amounting to Rs 2.65 lakh crore. The fresh stimulus package, which has been in the works for more than three months, focused on helping stressed sectors, middle income groups, MSMEs and more.

  The new measures are mostly focused on generating employment and boosting labour-intrusive sectors like real estate and manufacturing.

  Nirmala Sitharaman also announced a fresh scheme to incentivise new employment under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Rozgar Yojana. The existing Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme has also been extended till March 31, 2021.

Operation Calypso   The Directorate of Revenue intelligence

(DRI) recently launched Operation Calypso. Under the operation, 504 grams of cocaine was seized and a transnational drug racket was busted. The gang has successfully smuggled more than 3.3 kilograms of cocaine in Mumbai. The value of the smuggled cocaine has been estimated as 20 crores of Rupees.

  Hong Kong (China), Paris (France) and Zurich (Switzerland) share the top spot as the most expensive cities in the list, which comprises of 133 cities.

IIT Roorkee develops world 1st biosensor to detect harmful detergent pollutant

  A five-member team of researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee have developed the world’s first specific reliable bacterial biosensor to detect the presence of common environmental pollutant- Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate /Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SDS).

  The IIT Roorkee team has developed a whole-cell biosensor using Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 strain as a framework (chassis). The system involves a highly specific regulator along with a fluorescent protein that is produced only when SDS is present in the sample.

Kerala launched Accelerator for Electronics technologies (ACE) to boost start-ups.

  Kerala has launched a state- of-the-art Accelerator for Electronics Technologies (ACE) on November 2, 2020. The technology is expected to boost the southern state’s startups that are striving to scale up as sustainable enterprises.

Highlights   The development of ACE was a joint

initiative of Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) and Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC).

  The ACE seeks to develop itself as a leading accelerator in the country’s electronics technologies.

ISRO initiates launch sequence for PSLV-C49

  ISRO, in an announcement, said the countdown for the launch of PSLV-C49/EOS commenced. The mission which is scheduled to carry all-weather earth imaging satellite EOS-01, will be launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

  The PSLVC49 mission will also carry nine foreign satellites under a commercial agreement with New Space India Limited (NSIL), Department of Space.

  This will be the 76th launch vehicle mission from Sriharikota spaceport and the 51st flight of India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle ‘PSLV’. According to reports, this will be the second flight of PSLC with ‘DL’ variant with strap-on boosters.

  On its official website, ISRO has mentioned that the launch viewing gallery will be closed on November 7 during the launch of PSLV-C49/EOS-01 in light of Covid-19 precautions.

Indian Meteorological Department to provide predictions for Malaria from next monsoon

  The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) announced that it will start providing Malaria outbreak forecast from next monsoon. Also, it announced that India is to ramp up its high performance computing facility. Under this the existing capacity of 10 petaflop is to be increased to 40 petaflops.

  According to the recently released NCAER report titled “estimating the economic benefits of investment in monsoon mission and high performance computing facilities“, the investment in high-performance computing facilities is to bring 50 times benefits and profits.

Mars losing its atmosphere to outer space at faster rate than Earth

  Mars is losing its atmosphere to outer space at a faster rate, a study of data and images sent by Isro’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) and Nasa’s Mars orbiter Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (Maven) has found.

  According to a report in The Times of India, Mars, being relatively smaller planet compared to Earth, is losing its atmosphere at a faster rate.

Why is Mars losing its atmosphere?   Though other terrestrial planets in the

solar system are also constantly losing their atmospheres to outer space, the rate at which this loss happens is determined mainly by the size of a planet and temperature of its upper atmosphere, the report said as quoted by TOI.

  Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) on Wednesday posted on its website these findings of scientists who had studied data and images sent by MOM and Maven about a global dust storm that enveloped the Red planet in June-July 2018. Such a global storm is one of the dynamical meteorological phenomena on Mars.

Astronomers detect first fast radio burst in our Milky Way galaxy

  National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) detected a bright Fast radio bursts (FRV) and X-rays,w hich lasted for a millisecond, from the Milky Way galaxy for the first time ever. The signal, called FRB 200428, was found in April inside the Milky Way galaxy for the first time and was also the first to be traced to a magnetar, which are dead stars that have the most powerful magnetic fields in the universe.

  The findings confirm that magnetars cound be sources for FRBs.

  FRBs are bright bursts of radio waves from astronomical objects across galaxies, and their sources have been a mystery for over a decade.

World’s first CRISPR CaS-9 based diagnostic tool

  Tata Medical and Diagnostics Ltd (TataMD) have unveiled “TataMD CHECK” which is a novel diagnostic testing for COVID-19. It is the world’s first CRISPR CaS-9 based diagnostic tool and is powered by FELUDA. CRISPR Cas-9 is a technology developed in India by CSIR- IGIB for COVID-19 testing. TataMD is the healthcare venture of Tata Group.

  TataMD CHECK has been approved by Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). This new diagnostic testing for COVID-19 has been developed within a short span of 100 days of the licensing of technology.

China launches ‘world’s first 6G experiment satellite’

  China has sent into space the world’s first 6G experiment satellite.

  The 6G satellite was among three Chinese satellites successfully launched into orbit, along with 10 commercial remote sensing satellites developed by Argentinian company Satellogic.

  This was the 351st rocket of China’s Long March series.

  As per the reports, the technology is expected to be over 100 times faster than 5G.

  The 6G communications test satellite was launched into the orbit along with 12 other satellites.

  The satellite also carries technology which will be used for crop disaster monitoring and forest fire prevention.

Crew 1 Mission: SpaceX, NASA send 4 astronauts to International Space Station

  SpaceX successfully launched its first operational space taxi flight for NASA, as a shiny white Falcon 9 rocket took to the skies above Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

  SpaceX’s Crew-1 Dragon, called Resilience, is bound for the International Space Station (ISS), but instead of the traditional crew supplies and research experiments its cargo variant normally carries, this spacecraft carried a different type of cargo into space: three NASA astronauts, Mike Hopkins, Victor Glover, Shannon Walker and Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi.

nOPV2 vaccine for Polio becomes the 1st Ever Vaccine to be listed under WHO’s EUL

  The World Health Organisation(WHO) listed nOPV2 (novel Oral Polio Taccine type-2) Polio vaccine produced by Indonesia’s Bio Farma PT for Emergency Use Listing (EUL), this is the first approval by WHO of its kind amids several outbreaks in several parts of the world.

  The nOPV2 vaccine is aimed at containing outbreaks of circulating Vaccine-Derived Polio Virus (cVDPVs) in African Countries, Meditarranean countries as well as Western Pacific and world.

  VDPVs are caused by the virus strains used in the polio vaccines regaining their ability to cause polio.

Spaceflight Programme that is to carry three astronauts to space. It is the first crewed mission of India. ISRO’s GSLV Mk III launch vehicle is to be used. It is a three stage heavy lift Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle. GSLV Mk III is designed to carry 4 tonnes of satellites into the Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit or 10 tonnes of satellite to the Low Earth

Orbit.   The mission will launch a capsule that

will orbit the earth at 400 km altitude up to seven days. When the orbit is at a height of less than 1000 km, it is called Low Earth Orbit.

Param Siddhi ranked 63rd among top 500 most powerful non-distributed computer systems

  India’s Artificial Intelligence supercomputer Param Siddhi has achieved 63rd rank among top 500 most powerful non-distributed computer systems in the world. Ministry of Science and Technology in a statement said that the AI system will strengthen application development of packages in areas such as advanced materials, computational chemistry and astrophysics.

  It announced several packages are being developed under the National Supercomputing Mission for drug design and preventive health care system, flood forecasting package for flood prone metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Patna and Guwahati. This will accelerate Research and Development in war against COVID-19 through faster simulations, medical imaging, genome sequencing and forecasting and will be a boon for Indian masses and for start-Ups and MSMEs in particular.

  United National Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific’s (ESCAP) report ‘Geospatial Practices for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific 2020: A Compendium’ has cited the role of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)’s ‘BHUVAN’ Geo-Portal in combating COVID-19 in India.

  It has also cited the efforts of ISRO for supporting sustainable development projects in the country.

Zero Emission e-mobility   Indian Oil Corporation Ltd has

successfully conducted a ‘Proof of Concept’ feasibility study on ‘zero-emission electric mobility’ at one of its fuel stations in Bengaluru.

  A company statement said that Zero-Emission Electric Mobility is a concept that allows the electric vehicle (EV) to

charge using solar power and ensuring zero emissions.

India becomes 4th nation to get IMO nod for navigation satellite system

  The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) has been recognised by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) as a part of the World Wide Radio Navigation System (WWRNS) for operation in the Indian Ocean Region.

  India has become the fourth country in the world to have its independent regional navigation satellite system recognised by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

  The other three countries that have its navigation systems recognised by the IMO are the US, Russia and China.

  The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) was designed to provide accurate position information services to assist in the navigation of ships in Indian Ocean waters.

  The Director-General of Shipping (DGS) had approached the IMO for granting recognition to the IRNSS as a component of the WWRNS, similar to the US-owned Global Position System (GPS) or Russia’s Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) – a process that took two years.

  The IRNSS was a modern and more accurate navigation system and at any given time, there are at least 2,500 merchant vessels in Indian waters that will now be able to use the system.

NASA-ESA successfully launches Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite

  The US space agency NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) successfully launched ‘Copernicus Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite’, to monitor the rising global sea level.

  The joint US-European satellite lifted off on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

  The Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite will help to enhance weather forecasts and provide detailed information on large-scale ocean currents to support ship navigation near coastlines.

  The US-EU collaboration for the monitoring of sea-level record began in 1992 with the TOPEX/Poseidon satellite and followed by Jason-1 (2001), OSTM/Jason-2 (2008), and eventually, Jason-3 (2016).

  This Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite will be followed in 2025 by its twin, Sentinel-6B.

IIT-Madras develops autonomous solar vehicle to survey water bodies

  Engineers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, have developed a novel solar-powered vehicle to survey India’s water bodies.

  The autonomous robotic vehicle can undertake hydrographic and oceanographic surveys, while providing real-time data about its environment.

  The vehicle captures precise depth measurements in both deep and shallow waters of all shapes. It is equipped with echo sounder for depth measurements, an onboard GPS system for tracking, 360-degree view camera, and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) for topographical measurement.

  It also has provisions to carry additional engineering and technical payloads, with the ability to also measure incoming and passing water currents in the future.

NASA’s Curiosity rover finds evidence of an ancient ‘megaflood’ on Mars 4 billion years ago

  Researchers used data sent back to Earth by the NASA Curiosity rover on Mars.

  The team behind the study examined sediment data captured by Curiosity.

  They found evidence of giant ripples in the Gale crater similar to ones on Earth.

  These are caused by mass flooding events as the water washing over the surface.

  The team say a meteor impact likely caused the flooding 4 billion years ago.

Chang’e-5: China Successfully launched its 1st spacecraft

  China National Space Administration (CNSA) has successfully launched the 8.2 tonne lunar probe namely “Chang’e-5” through Long March-5, China’s largest carrier rocket.

  This Game is a browser-based software which can be played on any device. The game has been launched in 12 different Indian languages including Sanskrit, Tamil, Oriya, Kannada, Marathi, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Assamese and Punjabi. The game is focused on a character who encounters the right things such as washing hands and wearing masks that are necessary in order to contain the COVID-29 spread.

IIT-Bombay launches self-help website ‘Bandhu’ for students

  With the pandemic adding to the stress of students, IIT Bombay launched a selfhelp website to assist them through the tough time and enhance their emotional wellbeing.

  The website – ‘Bandhu’ (a friend in need), iitb-bandhu.com – is an initiative of IIT Bombay’s batch of 1992.

  The website addresses several issues such as procrastination, exam stress, the fear of failure, hostel life, discrimination, peer pressure, Internet addiction and a range of mental health issues. It also discusses a few techniques for relaxation and dealing with certain stressors.

  A fisherman from the Ramanathapuram district’s Pamban town has started ‘Kadal Osai FM 90.4’, India’s first and only radio channel for fisherfolk.

  It offers infotainment to listeners – from information on marine and COVID-19 to folk songs sung by fishermen/women and film songs.

CM Naveen Patnaik launched a mobile app “Secha Samadhan”

  Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has launched ‘Secha Samadhan’, a bilingual mobile application, to address the irrigation problems faced by farmers without them having to visit the offices concerned.

  With the launching of the application, farmers need not run to the offices of the Water Resources department and can send their grievances through photographs or videos.

  The farmers will be informed about the status of their complaints through SMS.

  Besides, immediate steps will be taken to redress the grievances of the farmers. He also launched four other online services to resolve the issue of water distribution for industries, commercial establishments and other institutions.

Jeevan Seva app launched for safe, timely travel of COVID-19 patients in Delhi

  The Delhi Government has launched Jeevan Seva app to enable hassle-free,

safe and timely travel for the COVID-19 patients to and from hospitals and COVID centres. The app was launched by Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on November 12, 2020.

  The Delhi government has launched the Jeevan Seva app to facilitate Delhi citizens in home isolation. The app will provide the user with access to an electric vehicle that will provide free pick-up and drop services. Each vehicle will be sanitised after each ride. The app has been launched in collaboration with EVERA cab services.

Govt. launches international version of UMANG app select countries

  The international version of the UMANG app was launched for select countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, UAE, Netherlands, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.

  UMANG app’s international version was launched by IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad during a virtual conference to mark three years of the platform.

  The UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) app provides a single platform to access pan India e-governance services ranging from central to local government bodies, and other citizen-centric services. It offers ease of access to major government services for citizens, from a single mobile app.

  UMANG will now be available in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, UAE, Netherlands, Singapore and New Zealand.

India blocks access to 43 more Chinese apps

  The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on November 24, 2020, issued an order blocking access to 43 mobile apps for the users under section 69A of the Information Technology Act. The list of the banned apps also includes many of the Chinese Apps such as AliExpress, Alibaba Workbench, TrulyChinese among others.

  The step has been taken by the government based on the inputs regarding the blocked apps for engaging in activities that are prejudicial to defence, integrity, sovereignty, and security of the state and public order in India.

‘Abhayam’ app for safety of women passengers launched in A.P.

  Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy launched “Abhayam” mobile

phone application which helps women and children travelling in taxis and autorickshaws to raise an alarm in case of any emergency.

  To start with, 1,000 auto rickshaws equipped with Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled GPS devices would be rolled out in Visakhapatnam city.

  About 5,000 vehicles would be brought on to the platform by February 1, 50,000 by July 1 and 1 lakh by November 2021 covering Vijayawada and Tirupati and other towns later.

National Portal for Transgender Persons

  In a move to increase tourism, Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of Development of North Eastern Region, inaugurated the Mansar Lake Development Plan in Jammu and Kashmir. The project is eyed to attract almost 20 lakh tourists every year and create employment for 1.15 crore man-days with an income generation of `800 crore per year.

West Bengal Ranks First in Decline of School Dropout Rate: Survey

  According to the Annual State of Education Report (ASER) 2020, West Bengal occupies the top position in the decline of dropout rate among school students during 2018-2020.

  The report says, school dropout rate in the state declined from 3.3 per cent to 1.5 per cent while it went up from four per cent to 5.5 per cent at the national level.

  The dropout rate in some bigger states like Karnataka, Telangana and Rajasthan was 11.3 per cent, 14 per cent and 14.9 per cent respectively.

  West Bengal also holds the first position in the country in terms of text books provided to the students with 99.7 per cent coverage, while in bigger states

like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, the same stands at 79.6 per cent, 60.4 per cent, 95 per cent, 34.6 per cent and 80.8 per cent respectively.

India’s first ‘tyre park’ to come up in West Bengal

  In West Bengal, Kolkata will soon feature India’s first “Tyre Park”, where artworks made from scrap and defective parts will be on display. The West Bengal Transport Corporation will launch this Tyre Park.

  The Tyre Park, which will come up at the Esplanade area, would have a small cafe where people can sit, relax and enjoy the craftsmanship made from tyres.

  No scrap material can be labelled as waste, it can be reused and converted into an art form. Scrap tyres, lying as waste in various bus depots, have been reworked and converted to colourful shapes by the in-house team of WBTC.

Rajasthan to be first state to legalise mask-wearing

  Rajasthan government is planning to make a law on wearing face mask mandatory to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the state.

  If the Bill gets the nod in the state assembly then Rajasthan will become the first state in the country to enact a law for making masks mandatory.

  A new clause in Section 4 of the Rajasthan Epidemic Diseases Act, 2020 has been inserted, which proposes to prohibit the

movement of people at public places without properly covering mouth and nose with a face mask or cover.

30 Indian cities Will Face ‘Water Risk’ by 2050; Jaipur tops: WWF report

  In accordance with the World Wide Fund (WWF) Water Risk Filter, an online tool, co-developed by the WWF for Nature and Germany’s Deutshce Invetitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft (KFW DEG), nearly a third of the 100 cities in the world susceptible to “water risk” are in India means 30 Indian cities are excepted to suffer increased water risks by 2050.

  The list of Indian cities was topped by Jaipur (Rajasthan) which is followed by Indore (Madhya Pradesh) and Thane (Maharashtra). Among 100 cities, Jaipur ranked 45th and Indore featured at 75th.

  Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel launched a scheme for distribution of fortified rice through Public distribution System (PDS) and other welfare initiatives for the people of Kondagaon district of the state on a pilot basis.

CCEA approves 210 MW hydropower project

  The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved funding to the tune of `1,810.56 crore for the 210 megawatt (MW) Luhri hydropower project on the Satluj river in Himachal Pradesh.

  The CCEA, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the investment for the project that is located in Shimla and Kullu districts.

  The project will take 62 months to be completed and will generate 758.20 million units of electricity a year.

  The project will be implemented by the Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited on the “build-own-operate-maintain” model and would be supported by the Central and State governments, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said while announcing the decision at a press conference.

  The existing jumbo care centre at Kottoor, located over 25 km away from the capital city, is being upgraded to international standards as part of the state government’s special programme for the protection and conservation of elephants.

  Chief Minister Vijay Rupani inaugurated a new Ro-Pax vessel “Voyage Symphony” that was procured from South Korea by the Surat-based ferry operator. This ferry replaced Island Jade on the Ghogha-Dahej route.

  Between October 2018 and September 2019 — when the ferry operations were suspended — it had transported 2.8 lakh passengers, 45000 cars, 12500 trucks and 26000 two wheelers between Ghogha and Dahej.

Haryana clears Bill on right to recall panchayat member

The Bill:   Provides the right to recall members of

Panchayati Raj institutions to those who elected them.

  Gives women 50% reservation in these rural bodies.

  Provides 8% reservation to the “more disadvantaged” among the Backward Classes.

  Allows the recall of village sarpanches and members of the block-level panchayat samitis and district-level zila parishads if they fail to perform.

Procedure to be followed:   To recall a sarpanch and members of the

two bodies, 50% members of a ward or gram sabha have to give in writing that they want to initiate proceedings.

  This will be followed by a secret ballot, in which their recall will require two-third members voting against them.

The key mandatory provisions of the 73rd and 74th amendments, are:

  Regular direct elections to all local bodies.   Setting up of state-level election

commission and finance commissions.   Mandatory reservation of seats for

Dalits and Adivasis in every local body, proportionate to their share in the population.

  India’s longest single-lane motorable suspension bridge has been inaugurated in Tehri-Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. The Dobra-Chanti Jhula (suspension)

bridge, was inaugurated by the Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat to mark the 20th foundation day of the state on 9th November 2020.

  The bridge is 725-metre long and has been built in 14 years over the Tehri lake with a cost of Rs. 2.95 crore. It will cut travel time between Tehri and Pratapnagar from 5 to 1.5 hours.

Kerala on top, Delhi near bottom in New Migrant Policy Index

  The states of Kerala, Goa, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh have been most successful in integrating migrant workers, while crucial migrant receiving states, including Delhi, have done poorly, shows the Interstate Migrant Policy Index (IMPEX) that seeks to measure integration of interstate migrants.

  India’s average IMPEX 2019 score for 28 states and the Union Territory of NCT Delhi is 37 out of 100, reflecting the limited attention paid to integration efforts in destination states.

  The index has been developed by Mumbai-based research non-profit India Migration Now (IMN), and it assesses states’ performance on eight policy areas spanning.

World’s first Tram library for children launched in Kolkata

  On the occasion of Children’s Day, a first-of-its kind in the world, library on tram for children was launched in Kolkata, West Bengal on 14 November 2020.

  A tram is a rail vehicle that runs on tramway tracks along public streets.

  The ‘Kolkata Young Reader’s Tramcar’ is the world’s first such tram library.

  The tram would run on Shyambazar-Esplanade and Esplanade-Gariahat routes, spanning across north and south Kolkata, every day from morning to evening.

  It has been jointly developed by the West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) and Apeejay Anand Children’s Library and will have around 1,000 books.

Lonar Lake in Maharashtra selected under ‘Ramsar site’

  The Lonar Lake in Buldhana district of Maharashtra has been chosen as a wetland site of international importance under the Ramsar conservation treaty.

  A Ramsar Site is a wetland site designated to be of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. The name Ramsar comes from Ramsar City of Iran, where this treaty was signed.

  The Convention on Wetlands is also known as the Ramsar Convention. It is an intergovernmental environmental treaty established in 1971 by UNESCO and came into force in 1975.

Jharkhand Assembly Passes resolution on ‘SarnaCode’ seeking separate identity code for Tribals

S.Jaishankar Represents India at 15th East Asia Summit 2020

  The External Affairs Minister Dr.S.Jaishankar represented India at the 15th East Asia Summit (EAS) on 14 November 2020 on behalf of PM Modi.

  The Summit was chaired by the Prime Minister of Vietnam Nguyen Xuan Phuc because Vietnam is ASEAN Chair in 2020 (ASEAN holds the central role and leadership in the forum).

  All the 18 EAS countries participated in the virtual Summit.

Keetham lake in Uttar Pradesh added to Ramsar sites

  The Keetham lake, also known as Sur Sarovar, in Agra of Uttar Pradesh has been added to the list of Ramsar sites.

What are Ramsar Sites   A Ramsar Site is a wetland site designated

to be of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. The name Ramsar comes from Ramsar City of Iran, where this treaty was signed.

  The Convention on Wetlands is also

known as the Ramsar Convention. It is an intergovernmental environmental treaty established in 1971 by UNESCO and came into force in 1975.

  Wetlands declared as Ramsar sites are protected under strict guidelines of the convention.

  The aim of the Ramsar list is to develop and maintain an international network of wetlands which are important for the conservation of global biological diversity and for sustaining human life through the maintenance of their ecosystem components, processes and benefits.

Manipur introduces award for civil servants to promote good governance

  Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh launched “Scheme for Chief Minister’s Award for Good Governance” to recognise and reward progressive and extraordinary work executed by authorities officers that promotes good governance.

  Under the scheme, authorities servants will probably be rewarded for excellent and exemplary efficiency and tasks whose qualitative and quantitative outcomes are of a really excessive order and which have benefitted numerous residents and stakeholders, stated a notification issued by the state.

Delhi Government declares November 20th as public holiday

  The Delhi government on November 17, 2020 declared November 20th as a public holiday on the account of Chhath Puja.

  The announcement comes almost a week after the Delhi government authorities prohibited celebration of Chhath Puja in public places and water bodies.

Asia’s first solar power-enabled Textile Mill to be unveiled in Parbhani district of Maharashtra

  The first solar power-enabled Textile Mill in Asia is set to be set up in Parbhani district, Maharashtra.

  Spread across 30 acres of land, the Jai Bhawani women’s cooperative textile mill, will be first in Asia that will operate entirely on solar power.

  Once functional, the mill will process cotton to cloth, and would provide jobs to many women in the district.

  The overall cost of setting up the project is around Rs. 100 crore.

  Parbhani is the leading cotton producing district in Maharashtra and with the operationalization of the mill it will give momentum to the industrial sector in the district.

PM Modi addresses Third Annual Bloomberg New Economy Forum virtually

  Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Third Annual Bloomberg New Economy Forum through video-conferencing on 17 November 2020.

  The Bloomberg New Economy Forum was established in 2018 by Michael Bloomberg, to build a community of leaders to engage in real conversations leading to actionable solutions about the critical challenges facing a world economy in the throes of a historic transition.

  The inaugural Forum was held in Singapore and the Second Annual Forum was hosted in Beijing.

Ministry of AYUSH Observes Third Naturopathy Day

  The National Naturopathy Day is observed in India on 18 November every year, to promote positive mental and physical health through drugless system of medicine, called as Naturopathy.

  The day was declared by the Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy), Government of India, on November 18, 2018.

Goa to get India’s first green energy convergence project

  India’s first convergence project to generate green energy for rural and agriculture consumption is set to come up in the state. Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), a joint venture of PSUs under the ministry of power, and Goa government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Tuesday to discuss the rolling out of the affordable clean power project.

  The state has set a target to generate 150MW green energy in the next two to three years and will also set up 100MW solar power plants across the state.

Vijayanagara, carved out of Ballari, is Karnataka’s 31st District as cabinet gives approval

  Vijayanagara, which will be carved out of Ballari district, is set to be Karnataka’s 31st district after Cabinet nod .

  Chief minister BS Yediyurappa had last year announced he will soon place a proposal before the cabinet for approval of carving out Vijayanagara district, which is named after the capital of historic Vijayanagara Empire.

2021 World’s Best Cities Ranking; Delhi Placed at 62nd

  In accordance with the annual report and ranking of best cities around the world titled “2021 World’s Best Cities” by Resonance Consultancy Ltd, London, United Kingdom (UK) is at top spot for the 6th consecutive year. It was followed by New York, United States (US) and Paris (France) at 2nd and 3rd rank respectively.

  Notably only one Indian city, Delhi, is listed in the ranking at 62 which was ranked 81st in previous year ranking.

  The report has ranked 100 cities around the world with a population of more than 10 lakh. The ranking was based on the 25 ranking factors grouped into six core categories.

  Notably, for the first time, the cities were also ranked on new criteria such as unemployment, the rate of COVID-19 infections (as of July) and income disparity.

CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan announces ‘Gau Cabinet’ for protection of cows

  The Madhya Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has decided to set up a ‘Gau Cabinet’ for the protection, conservation and promotion of cows in the state.

  The Cabinet will comprise of the departments of animal husbandry, forests, panchayat and rural development, revenue, home and farmers welfare.

International. It is the world leading anti-bribery standard setting organisation. The TRACE Bribery Risk Matrix, 2020 measured bribery in 194 jurisdictions. The jurisdictions were ranked based on score. The score is calculated based on four parameters. They are Government and civil service transparency, business interactions with government, capacity for civil society oversight and anti bribery deterrents and enforcement.

Government of India has launched Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge

  ‘Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge’ has been launched by the Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.

  It has launched on the occasion of World Toilet Day for the safety of sewer or septic tank cleaner.

  It will ensure that no person lost their life due to entering a sewer or septic tank. It will promote mechanized cleaning and will fend off the hazardous cleaning’ of sewers and septic tanks.

  In this challenge, the focus will be on creating awareness, infrastructure creation for mechanized cleaning and capacity building of the workforce.

  In 2013, the Government of India had enacted the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act to restrict hazardous cleaning.

  Hazardous cleaning means entering of a person into a septic tank or sewer without any protective gear.

Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U):   It was launched in 2014.   It is national-wide flagship programme

for universal sanitation in urban areas.   It is implemented by the Ministry of

Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

Delhi Airport Became the 1st Airport in Asia Pacific Region to get Level 4+ Transition Carbon Accreditation

  Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), Delhi, implemented by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) became the first airport in Asia Pacific Region to get the highest level – Level 4+ Transition – carbon accreditation. The airport was accredited under ACI’s Airport Carbon Accreditation Program for its works in aligning its carbon management with global climate goals to reach net zero emission reduction. The Airport is Owned and operated by GMR Group.

  The announcement was made by the Airports Council International (ACI) during the ACI Europe Annual Assembly and Congress on 17th November 2020.

Punjab Cabinet approves ‘Punjab Divyangjan Shaktikaran Yojana’ to Empower Persons with disabilities

  The Punjab Cabinet headed by Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh approved the ‘Punjab Divyangjan Shaktikaran Yojana’ to empower persons with disabilities in a virtual meeting.

  Phase–I will strengthen the existing programmes to ensure that benefits reach people with disabilities.

  Phase-II will introduce 13 new interventions proposed to be undertaken for empowerment of such persons.

RE INVEST 2020   Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi will

inaugurate the 3rd Global Renewable Energy Investment Meeting and Expo (RE-INVEST 2020) on November 26 to woo investors for investing in clean energy in India. India has set an ambitious target of having 175GW of renewable energy by 2022 and 450GW by 2030.

Ayushman Bharat   Amidst the challenges posed by the

covid-19 pandemic, India managed to make functional more than 50,000 (50,025) Ayushman Bharat - Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWCs) across the country.

  With the aim of providing comprehensive primary health care (CPHC) services to the communities closer to their homes, 1.5 lakh AB-HWCs will be established by December 2022.

  This has led to improved access to affordable primary healthcare services for more than 25 crore people.

SpiceJet starts Huderabad Nashik flight under Udan scheme

  SpiceJet started operating flights on the Hyderabad-Nashik route under regional connectivity scheme Udan.

  “The airline will be operating four weekly flights and will deploy its 78-seater Q400 aircraft. Nashik is the 14th destination to be connected under Udan by SpiceJet”.

New building permission system ‘TS-bPASS’ launched in Telangana

  A new online single window system for sanctioning approvals to new buildings based on self- certification by the applicants was launched in Telangana by Municipal Administration Minister K T Rama Rao.

  Under the Telangana State Building Permission Approval and Self-Certification System (TS-bPASS), no permission was required for constructing a house in plots area up to 75 square yards and building height up to 7 meters.

India’s first Moss Garden opens in Uttarakhand

  The Uttarakhand forest department dedicated the newly-built Moss Garden to the people, claiming that it is the country’s first such garden, spread over 10 hectares in Kumaon’s Nainital district.

  Of the 2,300 moss species found in India, 339 are found in Uttarakhand according to experts. Mosses are non-vascular plants that belong to Bryophyta division. They are small flowerless plants that typically grow in damp and shady locations.

SATAT Initiative: MoUs signed to set up 900 Compressed Bio Gas Plants

  The Government of India signed Memorandum of Understanding with leading oil and gas marketing companies to establish Compressed Bio-Gas Plants all over India. These plants are to generate biogas from crop wastes. The agreements were signed under the SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) initiative.

Uttarakhand govt paying cash incentives to inter-caste marriage

  Amid several BJP-ruled states contemplating to enact a law to check the alleged religious conversion of women in the name of marriage, the Uttarakhand government is paying Rs 50,000 to inter-caste and inter-faith couples to encourage such alliances.

  The cash incentives are given to all legally registered inter-faith Indian couples, said officials of the state Social Welfare Department.

  In cases of inter-caste marital marriages, one condition for availing the cash incentive is that one of the spouses should be from the scheduled caste as defined by Article 341 of the Constitution.

Maha Awas Yojana launched in Maharashtra

  Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddav Thackeray launched “Maha Awas Yojana”. The project aims to build 8.82 lakhs of rural houses in 100 days. The project includes construction of toilets as well. The cost of the project has been estimated as Rs 4,000 crores.

  The Government of India recently announced Affordable housing Scheme for the migrant workers affected by COVID-19. This was launched under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

IIT Delhi tops among Indian institutes in employability

  According to Global Employability Ranking and Survey (GEURS) 2020 results, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has been ranked as the best institute in India and 27th globally, in terms of employability of its students.The GEURS 2020 was released by the Times Higher Education and French HR Consultancy group ‘Emerging’.

  Globally, India has been ranked among the 15 best-performing countries in employability, improving from its 23rd rank in 2010.

  IIT Delhi climbed 27 ranks from 54 in 2019 to 27. Indian Institute of Science (IISc), however, has dropped to 71 from 43 in 2019. The other Indian institutes that made it to the list are IIT Bombay (128), Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad (184), IIT Kharagpur (195), and Amity University (236).

  Universities from the USA, California Institute of Technology, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Harvard University made it to the podium, followed by two universities from UK, University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford in top five.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi says 2014-2029 period is ‘very important’ for India

  Asserting that the 2014-29 period between the 16th to 18th Lok Sabha is “very important” for a young democracy like India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced last six years have been

“historic” for the country’s development and a lot remains to be done in the remaining period.

  The 16th Lok Sabha (2014-19) has been historic for the country’s progress, and the 17th Lok Sabha has already become a part of history due to a number of decisions it has taken, he said, referring to the passage of landmark legislations aimed at reforming farm and labour sectors besides abrogation of Article 370 and the citizenship law.

Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank to inaugurate 46th Online Faculty Development Programmes

  In a further push to faculty development and training across the country, the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), will inaugurate 46 online AICTE Training and Learning (ATAL) Academy Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs) in the presence of the chief guest Hon’ble Education Minister, Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank.

  The ATAL Academy, under the aegis of AICTE, conducts various Faculty Development Programmes to impart and upgrade faculty knowledge and skills.

  The ATAL Academy decided to conduct FDPs in online mode. AICTE has further planned 1000 online FDPs on thrust areas and other emerging areas which aims to benefit one lakh participants. Out of 1,000 FDPs, 499 online FDP have been completed with more than 70,000 faculty members already trained,” said Prof M.P. Poonia, Vice Chairman, AICTE.

Amit Shah Launches Mobile Covid RT-PCR Lab In Delhi

  Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a mobile laboratory that will conduct free RT-PCR tests for COVID-19 in Delhi and the results will be available in six to eight hours.

  The Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) testing mobile laboratory, a joint initiative of the SpiceHealth and the government, came up after Shah stepped in to fight the recent spurt in the number of COVID-19 cases in Delhi with a close coordination of various wings of the Centre and the Delhi government.

Mega food park inaugurated Punjab   A mega food park (MFP) at Phagwara

in Kapurthala district of Punjab was inaugurated by the Food Processing Minister. It is spread over 55 acres of land. It is equipped with warehouses, silos, cold storage, deep freezer and other related food processing facilities.

PM Modi launched “Har Ghar Nal Yojna” drinking water projects in UP’s Mirzapur Sonabhadra

  Prime Minsiter (PM) Narendra Modi launched “Har Ghar Nal Yojna” (Tap Water to every household) worth Rs. 5,555.38 crore for drinking water project in Mirzapur and Sonbhadra districts in Vindhyachal region of Uttar Pradesh (UP).

  In this regard, Rs.3212.18 crore will be spent in Sonbhadra and 2343.20 crore will be utilized in Mirzapur.

  This will benefit 41,41.438 families in both

the districts by ensuring water supply through pipelines to 2,995 villages.

  The scheme will be completed within the next two years (24 months).

Sustainable Development Goal Investor Map launched by UNDP and Invest India

  The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Invest India has launched a Sustainable Development Goals Investor Map for India. It lays out 18 Investment Opportunity Areas (IOAs) in six SDG enabling sectors. They are education, healthcare, agriculture and allied activities, financial services, renewable energy & alternatives and sustainable environment.

First cow hospital of Northeast inaugurated in Assam’s Dibrugarh

  A cow shelter in Assam’s Dibrugarh inaugurated Northeast’s first-ever cow hospital, on the occasion of Gopashtami.

  The hospital, Surbhi Aarogyashala, is set up by Shree Gopal Gaushala at a cost of Rs 17 lakh.

  There are 368 cows in the shelter.The hospital will provide services in 30 km radius.

  Himachal Pradesh government has launched ‘Him Suraksha Abhiyan’ to sensitize the people regarding Covid-19 pandemic and also to collect information regarding symptoms of diseases like TB, Leprosy, sugar and blood pressure by the door to door campaign throughout the State.

  Under this Abhiyan about 8000 teams comprising of Health, Ayurveda, Women and Child Development, Panchayati Raj Departments, District Administration and NGOs would be involved in this campaign.

  It would ensure door to door data collection of health parameters of the people.

Haveri railway station named after freedom fighter Mahadeva Mailar

  The Karnataka government notified the naming of Haveri Railway Station after the freedom fighter Mailara Mahadevappa. Following a request by the state government, the union home ministry has approved the name change of the railway station.

  Mahadevappa was the only representative from the then Mysore state who took part in the Dandi March and walked with Mahatma Gandhi. He was jailed for six months. Upon his return, he along with his revolutionary friends, Mahadevappa had attacked the railway station at Byadagi in Haveri. The Britishers had even announced Rs 300 reward to those who help capture Mahadevappa alive.

Indian-Origin MP creates history by taking oath in Sanskrit in New Zealand

  Dr. Gaurav Sharma, Member of Parliament (MP) in New Zealand created history on November 25, 2020 by becoming the first Indian-origin parliamentarian to take oath in Sanskrit language on foreign land.

  Dr. Sharma is one of the youngest and newly-elected MPs from the Labour Party in the NZ Parliament. He hails from Himachal Pradesh.

Mamata Banerjee launches “Government At Doorstep” scheme

  From December 1, West Bengal will launch an initiative to take government services to the doorsteps of people. ‘Duare Duare Sarkar’ or government at the doorstep.

  To run until Gandhi Jayanti on January 30, the initiative will attempt to ship pending companies to folks.

  From 11 am to 3 pm every day from December 1, government camps will be held in every block in the state where people can come and demand any service they have not received yet.

10th edition of National Science Film Festival begins virtually

  The 10th edition of prestigious National science film festival kicked off on 24th November 2020 in a virtual mode.

NITI Aayog forms panel to study feasibility of Hyperloop technology in India

  Government think-tank NITI Aayog has formed a high-level panel to explore the technological and commercial viability of the Virgin Hyperloop technology for ultrahigh speed travel in India, weeks after its first test was completed with humans on board.

  The committee has NITI Aayog member V.K. Saraswat as its Chairman and Adviser (Infrastructure Connectivity, NITI Aayog) Sudhendu Jyoti Sinha as its convener.

Agriculture Minister unveils ‘Sahakar Pragya’ to impart training to primary cooperative societies in rural areas

  Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar unveiled Sahakar Pragya. The 45 new training modules of Sahakar Pragya of the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) will impart training to primary cooperative societies in rural areas of the country along with Lakshmanrao Inamdar National Cooperative Research and Development Academy.

  These 45 training modules pf Sahakar Pragya to be delivered at LINAC and its countrywide network of Regional Training Centres will address the need for training of Primary cooperatives, FPO-Cooperatives and Self Help Groups federating.

Prakash Javadeker launches India Climate Change Knowledge Portal

  Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Prakash Javadekar has launched the “India Climate Change Knowledge Portal”.

  According to Prakash Javadekar, India has practically achieved its pre-2020 climate action targets. He said, though India is not responsible for climate change it is taking responsible action to mitigate the challenge.

SpiceJet launches India’s first dedicated freighter services to Leh in Ladakh

  Low-cost domestic airline major SpiceJet launched its dedicated freighter services to Leh on 26 November 2020.

  It is the first-of-its-type service by

any domestic airlines, and will boost connectivity to the area with the rest of the country.

  The maiden freighter flight of the airline was launched from Delhi to Leh, carrying 13 tonnes of cargo supplies.

  The flight was operated by SpiceXpress, the dedicated cargo arm of SpiceJet, whereas, a Boeing 737 freighter has been deployed on this route.

Artificial Intelligence hub in Bengaluru to promote technology innovations

  The Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Technologies Park (ARTPARK) set up in Bengaluru will promote technology innovations in niche areas by executing ambitious projects in various sectors by focusing on problems unique to India.

  With seed funding of `170 crore ($22 million) from the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the National Mission on Inter-disciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS), it will bring about collaborative consortium of partners from industry, academia and government bodies.

MP loses 26 tigers in 2020   Madhya Pradesh, which is known as the

‘tiger state’ of India, has lost 26 striped animals so far this year, as per the National Tiger Conservation Authority.

  According to the National Tiger Conservation Authority’s (NTCA) website, out of the 26 tiger deaths reported since April this year, MP lost 21 felines inside the tiger reserves, including 10 in the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve.

  MP has 124 tiger cubs. The cubs were not counted during the last census (in 2018). In the next count, we are going to have more than 600 tigers.

  Karnataka, which is on the second position in the number of tigers in the country, registered eight deaths and two seizures of tiger body parts this year, as per the data.

  The southern state lost 12 big cats last year.

Fehmarnbelt Tunnel will be the world’s longest immersed tunnel

  After more than a decade of planning, work has begun on the world’s longest immersed tunnel. Descending up to 40 meters beneath the Baltic Sea, Fehmarnbelt Tunnel will link Denmark and Germany, slashing journey times when it opens in 2029.

  The tunnel, which will be 18 kilometers (11.1 miles) long, is one of Europe’s largest infrastructure projects, with a construction budget of over €7 billion ($8.2 billion).

PM Narendra Modi to chair Virtual Global Investor Roundtable on November 5th

US formally withdraws from Paris agreement

  The Paris deal was drafted in 2015 to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change.

  It aims to keep the global temperature rise this century well below 2C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5C.

  The agreement was signed in December 2015, the treaty only came into force on 4 November 2016, 30 days after at least 55 countries representing 55% of global emissions had ratified it.

  The seam was discovered in 1979 and the Anglo-Australian firm began mining operations in 1983.

Australia-India Water Centre inaugurated virtually

  Australia-India Water Centre (AIWC) has been inaugurated in a virtual event to promote water-related research, teaching, and training between the two countries.

Operation Thunder 2020   The operation involved law enforcement

agencies in 103 countries.   Indian Customs intercepted an 18-ton

shipment of red sandalwood bound for the United Arab Emirates, during a month-long “Operation Thunder 2020”, coordinated by Interpol and the World Customs Organization, which involved law enforcement agencies in 103 countries.

  The operation against environmental crime took place from September 14 to October 11. It resulted in major seizures of specimens and products of protected flora and fauna, triggering arrests and investigations around the world, Interpol said. “By focusing on pre-identified routes and hotspots, Operation Thunder 2020 has resulted in more than 2,000 seizures of wildlife and forest products.

Malaysia Hosts 2020 APEC Summit   The 2020 Asia-Pacific Economic

Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting was held on 20 November 2020 under the Chairmanship of Malaysian Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

  This was the first time that all 21 APEC Economic Leaders met virtually due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Lahore Ranks World’s Most Polluted City

  Lahore has once again topped the list of most polluted cities in the world as its air quality index (AQI) recorded six times over the safe limit.

  Citing the data by IQAir, a Swiss air technology company that pulls together air quality indices from across the world, Geo News reported that on Monday morning, Lahore was engulfed in a grey haze and recorded an AQI of 306.

India launches High Impact Community Development Projects in Afghanistan

  India has announced Phase-IV of the High Impact Community Development Projects in Afghanistan. It was announced by the External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar during the 2020 Afghanistan Conference organized in Geneva through video- conference. The conference was co-hosted by UN, the Government of Afghanistan, and the Government of Finland.

India records highest rate of bribery in Asia

  India has the highest bribery rate in Asia and the most number of people who use personal connections to access public services, according to a new report by corruption watchdog Transparency International.

  The Global Corruption Barometer (GCB) – Asia, found that nearly 50 per cent of those who paid bribes were asked to, while 32 per cent of those who used personal connections said they would not receive the service otherwise.

  The report is based upon the survey which was conducted between June

17 and July 17 this year in India with a sample size of 2,000.

  After India, Cambodia has the second highest bribery rate at 37 per cent, followed by Indonesia (30 per cent) while the Maldives and Japan maintain the lowest overall bribery rate (2 per cent), followed by South Korea (10 per cent) and Nepal (12 per cent).

Arab Gulf’s first coal-based power plant being developed in Dubai

  The first coal-based power plant of Arab Gulf country is being developed in Saih Shuaib, Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

  The 2,400MW Hassyan clean coal power station will be built at an estimated cost of $ 3.4 billion.

  The project will comprise four units of 600MW each, which are expected to start operations in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 respectively.

  The power plant is expected to produce sufficient electricity to power approximately 250,000 households.

India and Finland sign MOU on environmental protection and biodiversity conservation

  India and Finland signed an MoU for developing cooperation in the field of Environment protection and biodiversity conservation.

  The MoU was signed by Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar from the Indian side and his Finnish counterpart Krista Mikkonen through video-mode.

  The Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observatory near Pune has been awarded the prestigious ‘IEEE Milestone’ statuesto honour its significant technical achievement as well as its excellence in unique product, services, patents and seminal papers which aim to benefit humanity.

  The National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) shared the information while adding that this is the third IEEE Milestone recognition awarded for an Indian contribution with the previous two being the works of JC Bose in 1895 and CV Raman in 1928, which received IEEE Milestone in 2012. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers award IEEE Milestone recognition for essential and historical achievements in the field of electrical and electronics engineering and is dedicated to advancing technology.

Tamil Nadu Day- November 1, 2020   The AIADMK government, last year,

declared that November 1 would be celebrated as state formation day. The state was created in 1956 following an exercise of the linguistic reorganization of the state, it was rechristened as Tamil Nadu by then chief minister C N Annadurai on January 14, 1969.

Tamil Nadu grants 100% vehicle tax waiver to EVs, plans dedicated park

  Tamil Nadu Government has notified 100 per cent motor vehicle tax exemption for battery-operated vehicles (Electric Vehicles).

  The State Government’s order says after careful examination it has decided to grant 100 per cent tax exemption for all battery-operated transport and non-transport vehicles.

  The State has been taking various initiatives to boost the EV system in the state.

  Tamil Nadu is planning to set up the country’s first park exclusively for the electric vehicle production eco-system. The state is targeting investments of about Rs 50,000 crore in the EV segment and has announced a series of incentives to attract investments in this space.

Increase in the sex ratio of female children

  A review meeting on the Let’s Protect Girls – Teach Girls program held at the Trichy District Collectorate.

  The project has been implemented in the district since last 2018. As of September this year, there are 929 females per 1000 males. It is necessary to prevent the destruction of the female child in the womb on the basis of gender. In order to adjust the sex ratio, abortion details from last year were examined wise by all primary health centers.

Tamil Nadu clinches top spot, gets highest investments in April-Sept

  Tamil Nadu received the highest share of investment proposals during the first half of the current fiscal, moving up two notches from the third position it held a year ago, a ratings agency report.

  Ratings agency Care Ratings said that Tamil Nadu had the highest share of 16% in the investments proposed during April-September period with Rs 20,000 crore, while Andhra Pradesh had the highest share of 23% in the capex projects announced.

Centres to impart skills in healthcare, logistics inaugurated

  Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami unveiled the Tamil Nadu Apex Skill Development Centre for Healthcare in Chennai and an Apex Skill Development Centre for Logistics at Indospace Limited in Oragadam.

  The World Health Organisation has also joined and will impart training in handling Covid cases, said a release. Meanwhile, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Central Footwear Training Institute and TNSDC to establish an institute at Vaniyambadi at Rs 20.37 crore.

MSME Prerana   ‘MSME Prerana’, an online Business

Mentoring Programme for MSMEs, an initiative by Indian Bank was launched by Hon’ble Union Minister of Finance & Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman, at the Bank’s Corporate Centre in Chennai.

  The first two programs will be in Tamil for the Coimbatore clusters of Indian Bank. The second phase was implemented in Trichy, Erode, Tirunelveli, Kumbakonam, Kanchipuram, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Puducherry, Chennai districts.

Tamil Nadu, HCL to set up disaster management analytics centre

  Tamil Nadu government and HCL will set up a Disaster Management – Data Analytics Centre to strengthen the State’s disaster management efforts in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

  The Disaster Management Centre of the Tamil Nadu government (in Chepauk, Chennai) is responsible for the overall management of disasters across the entire state.

  The Disaster Management-Data Analytics Centre will help capture data trends from across all districts of Tamil Nadu in real time and display them live to inform the government’s future decisions on degree of response needed for each district and, also for graded relaxation of the current lockdown to resume economic activities.

“SAKHI”- ONE STOP CENTRE (OSC) IN TAMIL NADU

  The Government of India has proposed a Special Scheme named “SAKHI”, which is a One Stop Crisis Centre (OSCC), intended to support women affected by violence, in private and public spaces, within the family, community and at the workplace. Women facing physical, sexual, emotional, psychological and economic abuse, irrespective of age, class, caste, education status, marital status, race and culture will be facilitated with support and redressal.

Tamil Nadu tops water management charts

  Tamil Nadu, a water-deficit state knocking on the doors of neighbours year after year to get its due share of Cauvery and Krishna river water, has topped the Union ministry of Jal Shakti’s National Water Awards in the ‘best state’ category, for 2019. The state has been recognised for its commendable work in the field of conserving water resources and managing it.

  Maharashtra and Rajasthan bagged second and third prizes respectively in the best state (normal) category. Mizoram topped the best state (special) category. The awards will be presented during the second National Water Awards 2019 distribution ceremony, scheduled for November 11 and 12 on a virtual platform.

  Execution of Athikadavu Avinashi groundwater recharge and drinking water scheme, costing Rs 1,652 crore, to realize the long-pending dream of the drought-hit areas of Coimbatore, Tirupur and Erode districts, and the diversion of flood surplus water from Mettur to the dry tanks in Sarabanga basin in Salem district through lift irrigation are the notable achievements, which the Centre has recognized.

Metrolite line between Tambaram to Velacherry

  The proposed Metrolite line, connecting Tambaram and Velachery, is likely to be a rubber-tyred coach-based mass rapid transit system running on elevated

or dedicated way having two-tiered stations. This comes as the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has issued standard specifications of Metrolite, which will cost around 40-50 per cent of the Metro Rail System and much reduced cost on operations for cities with projected passengers per hour per direction up to 15,000.

  MoHUA stated that Metrolite has attracted many tier-1 cities with population upto 10 lakh. It is learnt that Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has already launched the feasibility study for the metrolite project in the 15 km-long stretch connecting Velachery with Tambaram.

  According to MoHUA secretary Durga Shanker Mishra, MetroNeo will provide secure, comfortable, convenient, punctual and affordable eco-friendly commuting.

  Metrolite trains with a maximum 12T axle load is to be adopted for passenger capacity from 2,000 to 15,000.

Internet Gambling: Publication of the Emergency Law Gazette

  An emergency law has been published in the Tamil Nadu Gazette to ban online gambling. Consequently, the law came into force immediately.

  A similar emergency law was passed by Governor Banwar, the Emergency Act was Immediately published in the gazette. Consequently, all aspects of the law have come into force. According to the law, engaging in online gambling in Tamil Nadu is punishable by a fine of Rs 5,000 and imprisonment for six months.

Tamil Nadu bags best performer award

  Tamil Nadu has been adjudged the best performing big State for the third consecutive year.

  The study titled, “States of the State”,says that Tamil Nadu has topped in as many as 11 categories from a total of 12, including economy, tourism, infrastructure, inclusive development, law and order, along with entrepreneurship, cleanliness, environment, health, education and agriculture.

  Tamil Nadu had registered a higher economic growth rate (8.03 per cent) than the national average of 4.2 per cent in 2019-20.

  Tamil Nadu secured the top spot, scoring a total of 1,263.1 points out of 2,000 for its overall performance. The State also stood second in fighting the Covid pandemic, securing 74.2 points out of a 100. The recognition comes in the backdrop of Tamil Nadu bagging the first position in the composite ranking for good governance index (GGI), last year.
