• Currently, India is second largest
contributor of military and police
personnel.
• In the past, UN had faced severe
backlash over allegations of sexual
exploitation and abuse by its
peacekeepers, particularly those
working in Central African Republic.
• In 2015, 69 allegations were recorded
against peacekeepers but no Indian
was accused of any wrongdoing. No
Indian peacekeeper faced any
allegations of misconduct.
What is Yaws?
Yaws is a tropical infection of the skin, bones and
joints caused by the spirochete bacterium
Treponema pallidum pertenue.
It is spread by direct contact with the fluid from a
lesion of an infected person.
The disease is most common among children, who
spread it by playing together.
The disease infects only humans.
What is Neonatal Tetanus?
Neonatal tetanus is a form of generalised tetanus
that occurs in newborns.
Infants who have not acquired passive immunity
from the mother having been immunised are at risk.
It usually occurs through infection of the unhealed
umbilical stump, particularly when the stump is cut
with a non-sterile instrument.
The disease mostly occurs in developing countries,
particularly those with the least developed health
infrastructure. It is rare in developed countries.
INTERNATIONAL
INDIA MAKES THE FIRST CONTRIBUTION TO UN TRUST FUND
India has contributed USD 100,000 to a trust fund set up
for victims of sexual exploitation and abuse by
peacekeepers.
India has historically been one of the largest troop-
contributing countries in peacekeeping operations.
INDIA FIRST COUNTRY TO BECOME YAWS-FREE
India becomes first country to be declared free of Yaws,
an infection of the skin and bones, much ahead of WHO
global target year of 2020. The UNICEF for Elimination
of Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus and for being YAWS-
free.
TURKEY DECLARES THREE-MONTH
STATE OF EMERGENCY AFTER A FAILED
MILITARY COUP
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
declared a three-month state of emergency in
the country. The emergency was declared in
response to the failed coup that happened
on 15 July 2016.

About NATO
The NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty
Organization. It is also called the North
Atlantic Alliance.
It is an intergovernmental military alliance
based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was
signed on 4 April 1949.
The previous summit was held in Wales, the
United Kingdom in 2014.
The grouping has 28 member countries
including major countries of North America
and Europe.
ABOUT DTAA:
It provides for source-based taxation of capital
gains arising from the alienation of shares, instead
of residence based taxation provided under the
DTAA signed in 1994.
The revision also provides for assistance for the
collection of taxes and updates in between the two
nation with the provisions related to Exchange of
Information to accepted international standards.
However in this revision to the grandfathering
clause was provided in case of investments that are
made before 1 April 2017 in which the capital gains
will be taxed in the country if which the taxpayer is
a resident.
OPERATION ‘SANKAT MOCHAN’ LAUNCHED
TO EVACUATE INDIAN CITIZENS FROM
SOUTH SUDAN
Union Government started the operation 'Sankat
Mochan' to evacuate its citizens stranded in South
Sudan's capital Juba. Two C-17 military transport
aircrafts have been pressed in service to make the
evacuation.
POKHARA-NEW DELHI DIRECT BUS SERVICE
LAUNCHED
The first direct bus service between Pokhara
(Nepal) and New Delhi (India) was launched to
connect South Asia’s two important cities.
CABINET APPROVES THE REVISED COST ESTIMATE OF PUNATSANGCHHU-II HYDROELECTRIC
PROJECT IN BHUTAN
The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has given its approval for Revised Cost
Estimate (RCE) of Rs. 7290.62 crore for the ongoing 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project (HEP)
in Bhutan. The total cost escalation for the project, at this stage, is Rs.3512.82 crore.
The Project will provide surplus power to India and thus augment power availability in the country and
would enable project works to proceed smoothly without interruption.
CYPRUS SET TO SIGN THE NEW TAX TREATY WITH INDIA
India and Cyprus have agreed to revise their tax treaty under which capital gains tax will be levied on the
sale of shares of investments made after April 1, 2017.
The new Cyprus Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA), which has been agreed upon by both the
countries, would provide for source-based taxation of capital gains on transfer of shares.

of Nepal on Sunday, minutes before facing a
no-confidence motion in parliament he was
certain to lose, plunging the impoverished,

adopted by the lower and upper houses of
parliament in June 2016.

11TH ASEM SUMMIT BEGINS IN ULAANBAATAR, MONGOLIA
The eleventh edition of Asia-Europe Meeting Summit (ASEM11) or ASEM2016 began in Ulaanbaatar, the
capital of Mongolia.
The theme of the Summit is ‘Partnership for the Future through Connectivity‘.
World leaders including from the leaders of 51 member countries and the representatives of European
Union and Asian are attending the two day summit.
Indian delegation is led by Vice President Mohmmad Hamid Ansari.
India’s agenda for the summit is to push the efforts to boost inter-continental connectivity
ABOUT ASEM:
ASEM2016 is being held in the new world environment following Britain’s exit from the
European Union and a global economic slowdown.
It is also first major multilateral diplomatic gathering after recent ruling by UN-backed
international tribunal which has struck down China’s claims in strategic South China Sea.
ASEM2016 will also take into consideration the issue of terrorism during deliberations after
recent terror strike in Bangladesh and some European countries.

SIKKIM BECOMES INDIA’S FIRST STATE TO LAUNCH OPEN GOVERNMENT DATA PORTAL
Sikkim became the first state in India to have an open government data portal linked sikkim.data.gov.in.
The open government data portal facilitates free use; reuse and redistribution of data produced or
commissioned by the government or government controlled entities by anyone.
KERALA GOVERNMENT LAUNCHES FIRST EVER WATER METRO PROJECT IN THE COUNTRY
Kerala Government has launched Kochi Water Metro project, the first ever Water Metro project of the
country. It was launched by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at Kochi, Kerala.
The project aims to provide water connectivity to people living between islands in the Kochi agglomeration
area and the city.
It will be built at an estimated cost of rs. 747 crore.
The project will be implemented by the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) and funded by German
Development Bank.
KERALA GOVERNMENT CONSTITUTES STATE TECHNICAL ADVISORY GROUP ON
IMMUNISATION
The Kerala State Government has constituted a State Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (STAGI) on
the lines of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI).
The Group will advise the State government on the policies and practices to be adopted and implemented
under the National Immunisation Programme.
A 3-DAY MEETING BETWEEN BSF & BORDER GUARD BANGLADESH (BGB) BEGINS IN
AGARTALA
A three-day meeting between Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has begun in
Agartala to sort out problems along the border.
MOTORCYCLE RALLY ‘RIDE FOR ACCESSIBILITY’ FLAGGED OFF IN DELHI
A motorcycle rally named Ride for Accessibility was organized in the national capital with a message to
empower differently abled persons, Divyangs.
The rally which saw 500 young men and women motorcycle riders was flagged off at India Gate by
Human Resources Development Minister Prakash Javadekar, Science and Technology Minister Dr.
Harsh Vardhan and Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot.
Accessible India Campaign
It also known as Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan is aimed at creating universal accessibility in built
environment, public transportation and Information and Communication Technology eco-system for
Divyangs.

MODI LAYS FOUNDATION STONE AIIMS AND REVIVAL OF A FERTILIZER PLANT IN GORAKHPUR
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone of All India Institute Of Medical Sciences
(AIIMS) and revival of fertilizer factory which was closed for the last three decades in Gorakhpur district of
Uttar Pradesh.
Recently only, the Union Cabinet has approved the setting up of AIIMS under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya
Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) at an estimated cost of Rs. 1,011 crore.
UNION GOVERNMENT FORMS 'DISHA' FOR TIMELY
IMPLEMENTATION OF CENTRAL SCHEMES
Union Government announced the formation of District
Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee
(DDCMC) that will be known as ‘Disha’. First meeting of Disha
will be held on 13 August 2016.
Disha was created for effective development and coordination
of Central Government's programme, whether it is for
infrastructure development or Social and human resource
development.
It will monitor the implementation of 28 schemes and programmes of Ministry of Rural Development and
other Ministries.
CM CHANDRABABU NAIDU LAUNCHES 'MISSION HARITA ANDHRA PRADESH'
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu launched 'Mission Harita Andhra Pradesh', by planting saplings at
Sunkollu village under Nuzividu mandal in Krishna district.
Interestingly, Harita Andhra Pradesh was a pet project of late chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy but
Chandrababu has now made it a 'mission' with a new slogan Vanam-Manam (forest and we).
The objective of the mission is to increase the green cover in the state to 50 per cent by the year 2029.
WEST BENGAL GOVT. SETS TARGET TO CONSTRUCT TOILETS ACROSS ALL VILLAGES OF THE STATE
BY MARCH 2019
The West Bengal government has set a target to construct toilets across all villages of the state by March
2019 to enable open defecation free (ODF) rural Bengal.
As in 2015, Nadia district became the first to achieve ODF status in the country.
MADHYA PRADESH BECOMES FIRST STATE TO APPROVE SETTING UP OF HAPPINESS DEPARTMENT
Madhya Pradesh Cabinet set up Happiness Department in the state. The department will work as knowledge
resource centre on the subject of happiness.
With this approval, Madhya Pradesh became the first state of the country to set up such a Department.
Apart from the department, the cabinet also decided to establish a state Happiness Institute under the
Happiness Department. Initially it will have a budget of 3 crore 60 lakh rupees.

TRI NETRA:
The Tri-Netra will alert the drivers of any physical
obstruction on railway tracks ahead and thus give
ample time for the driver to apply the brakes to
prevent train accidents.
It is made of high sensitivity infra-red video
camera, high-resolution optical video camera and a
radar-based terrain mapping system. These three
components shall act as three eyes (Tri-Netra) of
the Locomotive Pilot.
TRI-NETRA - TERRAIN IMAGING FOR DIESEL RIVERS INFRA-RED, ENHANCED OPTICAL & RADAR
ASSISTED SYSTEM
Ministry of Railways, Railway Board has initiated a proposal to install TRI-NETRA systems on locomotives
for enhancing the vision of Locomotive Pilots in inclement weather. TRI-NETRA stands for - Terrain
imaging for diesel Rivers INfra-red, Enhanced opTical &Radar Assisted system.
74 SCHEMES OF 17 MINISTRIES & DEPARTMENTS
BROUGHT UNDER DBT
The GOI has been brought 74 schemes of 17
Ministries and Departments under Direct Benefit
Transfer (DBT).
Addressing the members of Consultative
Committee of his Ministry in New Delhi, Finance
Minister Arun Jaitley stated that DBT is a very
important scheme as it transfers the benefit to the
targeted beneficiaries.
MAHARASTRA CM LAUNCHES VIRTUAL, DIGITAL CLASSROOMS ACROSS 32 ITIS IN STATE
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has launched the facility of virtual and digital classrooms
across 32 ITIs in the state on the occasion of World Youth Skills Day.
According to him, the facility of virtual classrooms will bridge the urban-rural divide and open the doors of
knowledge. Mr. Fadnavis asked students to master their passion, and assures that jobs will come in plenty
due to the power of skill development.
‘RAMAYANA MONTH’ BEGINS IN KERALA
Kerala on 16 July 2016 started observing Ramayana month in the temples. In Malayalam it is termed as the
Ramayana Masam. The Ramayana Month starts with the commencement of Malayalam month ‘Karkidakam’.
UNION COMMERCE MINISTRY LAUNCHES E-MARKETPLACE PORTAL FOR GOODS
PROCUREMENT
The Union Commerce Ministry has launched an e-marketplace portal for online purchase of goods and
services by various central government ministries and departments.
231 NAMAMI GANGE PROJECTS HAVE BEEN LAUNCHED
It across seven states including Uttarakhand, UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Haryana and Delhi.
These projects will involve modernization and redevelopment of Ghats and crematoriums, development of
sewage infrastructure and treatment, afforestation, tree plantation, pilot drain project, interceptor drain
project, trash skimmers and conservation of biodiversity.
CENTRE NOD FOR RENAMING OF MHOW RAILWAY STATION AFTER B R AMBEDKAR RAILWAY
STATION
The central government has given its nod for renaming Mhow railway station in Indore district of Madhya
Pradesh after BR Ambedkar as the Dalit icon was born there.

MISSION INDRADHANUSH:
It depicts 7 colours of the rainbow which aims to cover
all those children by 2020 who are either unvaccinated,
or are partially vaccinated against 7 vaccine
preventable diseases. The diseases include diphtheria,
whooping cough, tetanus, polio, tuberculosis, measles
and hepatitis B. Under this universal vaccination
programme, all vaccines will be made available free of
cost.
MISSION INDRADHANUSH TO NEXT COVER 13 MADYA PRADESH DISTRICTS
The third phase of 'Mission Indradhanush' will cover Alirajpur, Jhabua, Ashok Nagar, Raisen, Vidisha, Sagar,
Damoh, Tikamgarh, Chhattarpur, Panna, Umaria, Satna and Rewa districts".
RAJASTHAN BECOMES FIRST STATE TO
INTRODUCE MINIMUM WAGES FOR PART-
TIME WORKERS
Rajasthan has become the first state in the
country to introduce minimum wages for part-
time workers. Labour Department has issued a
notification in this regard.
With this notification, part-time workers now
come under the Minimum Wages Act 1948.
In another decision, the government has
increased minimum wages in all categories of scheduled employments by Rs 104 per month.

WORLD'S LARGEST CHARKHA UNVEILED AT DELHI AIRPORT
Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Minister Kalraj Mishra has unveiled the world’s largest Charkha at
Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport, IGI in New Delhi.
The four tones Charkha made from high-quality Burma teak wood is estimated to last for over 50 years.
INDIA'S FIRST E-COURT OPENED IN HYDERABAD
India's first e-court has opened at High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad. It is the common high court for the
states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
GOVT RELEASES RS 100 CR TOWARDS CO-CONTRIBUTION IN APY
The Government has released Rs 100 crore towards its co-contribution for Atal Pension Yojana (APY) for 2015-
16. APY provides minimum guaranteed pension ranging between Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 per month for the
subscriber from the age of 60 years.
ODISHA GOVERNMENT TO CELEBRATE BICENTENARY OF 1817 PAIKA REVOLT
Odisha Government on 19 July 2016 decided to celebrate the bicentenary (200 years) of the 1817 Paika revolt
against the British Empire in 2016.
For the purpose, the state will organise a series of events in Odisha and at national level.
PAIKA REVOLT:
The Paika revolt is termed as the first war of India’s Independence by many historians. Paikas (a martial race)
had first raised the banner of revolt against the British Raj on 29 March 1817 at Barunei near Khurda. They rose
due to several social, economic and political reasons. The Paiks rose in rebellion under their leader Bakshi
Jagabandhu and, projecting Lord Jagannath as the symbol of Oriya unity.

Swachh Bharath Mission:
It was launched on 2 October 2014 to
make India clean and open defecation
free by 2019 to mark Mahatma Gandhi’s
150th birth anniversary.
The current cleanliness drive aims to end
the wide-spread practice of open
defecation, build more toilets and
improve waste management.
RAILWAY PASSENGERS TO GET RS 10 LAKH INSURANCE FOR LESS THAN RS 10 FROM SEPTEMBER
Indian railway is likely to start voluntary passenger insurance scheme from September by charging a
minimal premium of less than Rs 10 per ticket from travelers for an insurance cover of Rs 10 lakh in case of
death or permanent disability caused in train accident.
ECI LAUNCHED NATIONAL ELECTORAL ROLL PURIFICATION 2016
The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced that launch of National Electoral Roll Purification (NERP)
2016 programme across the country.
The programme was launched to improve health of Electoral Rolls (ERs) and to optimize the Polling
Station (PS) location and area across the country.
The motto of ECI for the year 2016 is No voter to be left behind.
GOVT ROLLS OUT KVK PORTAL FOR MONITORING OF FARM CENTRE
The KVK(KRISH VIGAS KENDRAS) portal will provide information related to all schemes, market
development, and weather updates, besides advisory to farmers. This portal will also facilitate online
monitoring of KVKs.
GOVT TO CLEAN 10 ICONIC PLACES UNDER SWACHH BHARAT MISSION
The places which have been selected are
1. Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu and Kashmir
2. Taj Mahal in Uttar Pradesh
3. Tirupati temple in Andhra Pradesh

5. Ajmer Sharif in Rajasthan,

KERALA GOVERNMENT IMPOSES 14.5% FAT TAX ON
JUNK FOOD
The Kerala government has announced to impose 14.5
% tax on junk food on the lines of ‘Fat Tax’ imposed on
such food items. This will make food items like
burgers, pizzas, pasta costlier.
The need for the so-called ‘fat tax’ is explained by the
fact the state currently has the second-highest obesity
rate for children in India.

The IDCF drive is a very cost-effective

Development & Entrepreneurship. It is skill certification and reward scheme.
Objective:
To enable and mobilize a large number of Indian youth to take up outcome based skill training
and become employable and earn their livelihood. Under the scheme, trainees who are
successfully trained, assessed and certified in skill courses run by affiliated training providers
will be provided with monetary reward.

Kerala government has banned 'electronic cigarette'. It was banned in view of studies claiming that its use can

Kerala becomes fourth state in India to ban e-cigarette.
Punjab was the first state to ban e-cigarettes in November 2014 under the provisions of Cigarettes and Other
Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003. It was followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka.

INDIA RANKS 91 IN NETWORKED READINESS INDEX 2016
India was placed at 91st position in the Networked Readiness Index (NRI) 2016 that was released by the
Geneva-based World Economic Forum (WEF). The index was released as the part of the WEF’s Global
Information Technology Report 2016.
Singapore is at the top of the list. Finland holds the second place.
INDIA IS THE WORST PLACE FOR RETIREMENT, SAYS GLOBAL INDEX
Retiring in India is very bad idea. The country ranked last in the Natixis Global Asset Management's fourth
annual Global Retirement Index (GRI), making it the world's worst country for retirees.
Switzerland, Norway and Iceland are among the top three countries to retire, followed by the United States,
which is ranked 14th.
The list by Natixis ranks 43 nations compared to 150 last year with 34 from IMF's advanced economies, five
from OECD and four from BRICS.
In last year's survey, India scored No. 88 among the 150 countries ranked, but was the worst performing
BRICS country.
INDIA JUMPS 19 PLACES ON WORLD BANK LOGISTICS PERFORMANCE INDEX; MOVES TO 35TH

India improved its ranking in the World Bank group's (WBG) bi-annual "Logistics Performance Index 2016",

KARNATAKA TRADE BODY INKS PACT WITH SANYA CITY
The Karnataka Region Economic and Trade Organisation (KRETO) and the Sanya People Municipal
Government, China,signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to foster trade between Sanya City and
Karnataka.
The agreement allows for large and medium delegations from Sanya to visit Karnataka and vice-versa.
This agreement also allows for Sanya city to be certified as an approved destination for delegation visits from
Karnataka.
The delegations visiting Karnataka from China, in turn, will be exposed to the traditional values of yoga,
apart from encouraging tourism and bilateral trade.
TELANGANA LAUNCHES TREE PLANTATION DRIVE
Contributing to the Telangana government drive to plant 25 saplings in one day, the CII, real estate
associations, the Stateowned Singareni Collieries Company Ltd, government departments and educational
institutions have pitched in to make it a success.
The ‘Harita Haram’ programme is aimed at building a greener and healthier State.
While the CII-Godrej GBC (Green Building Centre) aspires to set up a first private Botanical Garden focusing
on native species of Telangana, the members of the CII have planted 6.5 lakh saplings.
By the end of 2017, CII-Godrej GBC proposes to have about 1,000 native species where the centre would serve
as a resource centre to learn and appreciate the rich biodiversity of the State.
CREDAI, the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India, planted 1,00,000 saplings at
Hyderabad Central University campus and pledged to maintain them for 3 years.
BHEL COMMISSIONS 250 MW POWER PLANT IN GUJARAT
State-run BHEL has commissioned another 250 MW unit based on eco-friendly Circulating Fluidised Bed
Combustion (CFBC) technology, using low quality coal (lignite) as the primary fuel.
The unit has been commissioned at Bhavnagar Energy Company (BECL) 2x250 MW thermal power project,
located at Padva village in Bhavnagar district, Gujarat, the company said in a statement.
The project is equipped with CFBC technology that enables use of low quality lignite as fuel. The second unit
of this project is also at an advanced stage of completion.
UNION GOVT APPROVES RS 1,601 CRORE FOR HIMAYAT PROGRAMME IN J&K
The Union Government has approved nearly 1,600 crore rupees for Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) under skill
development initiative ‘Himayat’ programme.
Under it, youths from both rural and urban areas of J&K would be imparted with training in various job-
intensive vocational courses over the next three years.
Youths enrolled for this scheme will be given training for six-months, nine-months and one year job-oriented
courses.They will be trained in and outside the state.
A provision has been also kept for foreign placements as well.
Himayat is a placement linked skill development initiative for training and placement of 1 lakh youths from
J&K in next 5 years. ‘Himayat’ is an Urdu word which means support.

HARYANA GOVT LAUNCHES PASHUDHAN BIMA YOJANA
Haryana Government has launched Pashudhan Bima Yojana, an insurance cover scheme for cattle breeders
in the state.
It was launched by Haryana Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister, O. P. Dhankar in Jhajjar.
Pashudhan Bima Yojana will provide insurance cover to cattle breeders in the state at different premium
rates for different animals.
Insurance cover will be provided at a premium of Rs 100 for cows, buffaloes, bulls, camels and at Rs 25 for
sheep, goat and pig for a period of three years. Under it, the insurance companies would give compensation
in case of death of animal (cattle).
CENTRE TO HOLD MAKE IN INDIA CONFERENCE IN ODISHA IN DECEMBER
The Central government proposes to organise a 'Make in India' conference in Bhubaneswar in December.
The conference would be organised by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of
Commerce and Industry, to attract investment to Odisha as well as the country.
The Odisha government has requested the ministry to hold the conference in the first week of December.
The tourism department of Odisha government organises the five-day twin mega events of Konark Festival
and International Sand Art Festival from December 1 every year.
The Konark Festival is held at the open air auditorium with famous Sun Temple in the backdrop.
Many renowned artistes of Odissi, Manipuri, Satriya, Kuchipudi, Bharatnatyam and Kathak perform at the
festival.
VODAFONE M-PESA TIES UP WITH PUNJAB POWER UTILITY
Vodafone M-Pesa, a mobile money transfer platform, has tied up with Punjab State Power Corporation
Limited (PSPCL) to enable consumers pay their electricity bills instantly.
Vodafone M-Pesa offers customers a cashless, secure platform for electricity bill payments with the largest
network of agents (or CashIn Points) to enable digitisation of money for cash holding population.
KARNATAKA OPENS DEDICATED START-UP CELL
The Government of Karnataka has set-up a dedicated start-up cell for speeding up the implementation of the
initiatives under its start-up policy.
The cell provides a springboard to facilitate sanctions of incentives and concessions under the Start-up
Policy 2015-2020, for start-ups registered with it.
A portal, www.startup.karnataka.gov.in, was launched to enable and educate start-ups on the State
government’s policies and provide access to various benefits under the policy.
All technology-based start-ups that fall under the criteria listed by the State government can register with
the portal.
This is the first time in India that a state government has come up with a dedicated Start-up Cell guided by
the Start-up Policy, which envisages the growth of 20,000 new start-ups, including 6,000 product start-ups, by
2020 in Karnataka.

Maharashtra government started an initiative for plantation of about 2 crores trees.
State Forest Department will plant 1.50 crore under the scheme and 5 million trees will be planted in 36
districts.
The Forest Minister said that the state plans to plant over 31,166,057 plants, for which 3 crore 5 lac 50 thousand

NATIONAL APPRENTICESHIP PROMOTION SCHEME – got its ground clear by Cabinet.
With a massive target of training 50 lakh apprentices, The Union Cabinet presided over by Mr. Narendra
Modi approved the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme on July 5th
2016.
This scheme has a disbursal of about 10,000 crores in order to achieve its vast target of training 50 lakh
apprentices.
Apprenticeship Training is considered to be one of the most efficient ways to develop skilled manpower
for the country. It provides for an industry led, practice oriented, effective and efficient mode of formal
training.
This scheme will be implemented by Director General of Training (DGT) under Ministry of Skill
Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE).
Being a first attempt in offering financial assistance to the apprentices, Central Government will share
25% of the total stipend payable to the employee directly with employers.
GOVT ALLOWS STATE-RUN GENERAL INSURERS TO SELL PM’S CROP INSURANCE SCHEMES
Government of India made a pact of Allowing four Public Sector Insurers in PMFBY (Pradhan Mantri
Fasal Bima Yojana) on July 3rd
,2016.
Along with the existing 11 private sector Insurers now Government allowed Four PSU’s
namely LIC(life Insurance Corporation of India), General Insurance Corporation of India, National
Insurance Co. ltd, Oriental Insurance Co. ltd. to increase the agricultural insurance cover to a great extent.
The Government aims to achieve a huge potential of $2.5 Billion insurance premium collection in the
upcoming agricultural practice seasons.
The PMFBY has replaced the existing two crop insurance schemes — the National Agricultural Insurance
Scheme (NAIS) and the Modified NAIS.
MADHUBABU PENSION SCHEME EXTENDED TO 50 LAKH BENEFICIARIES WITH THE LATEST
ADDITION OF 3 LAKH PEOPLE
On the mark of Independence Day celebrations, ‘Madhubabu Pension Scheme‘ is going to be extended to
three lakh more beneficiaries from August 15.
Odisha Chief MinisterNaveen Patnaik directed the district collectors to extend this pension scheme in order
to ensure social security for all the people on time.
On the addition of these 3 lakh beneficiaries on 15 august, this scheme covers 50 lakh beneficiaries
marking a strategic mark in building the social security of the normal people of Odisha.
The eligible people below poverty line (BPL) category would be covered under this Madhu Babu Pension
Yojana. Under the old-age pension scheme, a person receives Rs 300 per month after attaining 60 years.
Beneficiaries beyond the age of 80 receive Rs 500 per month. While the state government provides Rs 100
under the scheme, the remaining amount is provided by the Centre.

MANIPUR JOINS UDAY SCHEME, TO GET BENEFITS WORTH RS 263 CRORE
North Eastern state Manipur has joined the Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (UDAY) scheme. It
is the 14th state to join the UDAY.
The state will get benefit of around Rs 263 crore upon joining and can improve the state efficiency
of the Discoms. The state also the first in Northern states to join in Scheme.
In this regard MoU was inked between Centre and Manipur and its discoms for the benefit of the
Discom.
MEGHALAYA GOVERNOR LAUNCHED THE PRADHAN MANTRI SURAKSHIT MATRITVA ABHIYAN
(PMSMA)
Meghalaya Governor V.Shanmuganathan inaugurated the launch of Pradhan Mantri surakshit matriva
abiyan(PMSMA) in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya at a programme organized by the office of the
District Medical & health officer.
The inagural programme was followed by a daylong free medical camp for Pre Natal and post natal care
which was availed by hundreds of women and children.
. ABOUT PMSMA:
PMSMA Scheme is a new initiative of the central government aimed at boosting the health
care facilities for pregnant women especially the poor.
The scheme provides that pregnant women would be given health check-up and required
treatment for free on the 9th of every month in all government hospitals and health centers across

ECONOMY
UNION CABINET APPROVES RECOMMENDATIONS OF 7TH PAY COMMISSION
The salaries and arrears, effective from 1 January 2016, will be made applicable.
The commission recommended 23.55 percent hike in pay and allowances of government employees.
This implementation of the recommendations will put an additional burden of 1.02 lakh crore rupees on the
exchequer annually or nearly 0.7 percent of GDP.
The minimum pay for government employees is recommended to be set at 18000 rupees per month against
Rs. 7000.
The maximum pay is recommended to be Rs. 2,25,000 per month for Apex Scale and Rs. 2,50,000 per month
for Cabinet Secretary and others presently at the same pay level.
The increase in pay will be 16 percent, increase in allowances will be 63 percent and increase in pension will
be 24 percent. The commission headed by Justice AK Mathur submitted its report to the Union Finance
Minister Arun Jaitley on 19 November 2015.
SBI LAUNCHES SBI DIGITAL VILLAGE
State Bank of India, the largest Bank in India, has embarked on transforming the villages into cash less eco-
system, by adopting them as SBI DIGITAL VILLAGES.
The project aims at transforming the selected villages into safe, healthy and vibrant digital centres.
The Bank will formally launch this initiative in 21 villages on the occasion of State Bank Day, which have
moved on to the digital platform.
SBI plans to bring 100 villages under this initiative across the country by the end of FY 17.
SBI SECURES $625 MILLION FROM WORLD BANK FOR SOLAR PROGRAMM
India’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has signed an agreement worth 4,200 crore rupees ($625
million) with the World Bank to support its grid connected rooftop solar photovoltaic (GRPV) programme.
Under GRPV programme, at least 400 MW solar capacity will be created across the country.
FOURTH TRANCHE OF GOLD SCHEME NETS RS. 919 CR.
The fourth tranche of the Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme received applications for a record Rs.919 crore worth
of gold bonds, taking the total amount received through the scheme to about Rs.2,240 crore across the four
tranches of the scheme so far.
Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGB): Record amount of Rs.919 cr equivalent to 2.95 tons gold mobilised in 4th
tranche. Scheme gaining popularity.
The first three tranches of the scheme attracted a total of Rs.1,318 crore corresponding to 4.9 tonnes (4,900 kg)
of gold, with the second tranche holding the previous record of highest subscription amount of Rs.746 crore
for 2.95 tonnes of gold.
G-20 FINANCE MINISTERS PLEDGE TO BOOST GLOBAL ECONOMY
The Finance Ministers from the Group of 20 (G-20) major economies have pledged to boost the global
economy, which is showing a weak recovery.

SOVEREIGN GOLD BOND SCHEME
The aim of the Sovereign Gold
Bond scheme is to “reduce
demand, including through
imports, for physical gold, and in
the process reduce India’s current
account deficit,” the fact of the
matter is that the scheme has a
long way to go in achieving this.
This announcement was made at the end of the two-day
meeting of G-20 Finance ministers and Central Bank
Governors meeting held in the Chinese city of Chengdu.
G-20 Finance ministers expressed concern about Britain’s
plan to leave the European Union and how Brexit will
affect the world’s economy.
They vowed to reject trade protectionism, which became a
prominent issue at the meeting.
RS 2,048 CRORE SANCTIONED UNDER 'SWADESH DARSHAN' SCHEME
The Tourism Ministry has sanctioned 25 projects worth Rs 2,048 crore for 21 states and Union Territories
under 'Swadesh Darshan' since January last year, when the scheme was launched.
Of the sanctioned amount, about Rs 403 crore has been released to the states and UTs for projects which have
been approved.
The states and UTs for which the projects have been sanctioned under the scheme include Jammu and
Kashmir, Uttarakhand,Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Kerala, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya
Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Bihar.
IDFC BANK ACQUIRES GRAMA VIDIYAL
IDFC Bank announced it had acquired Tamil Nadu-headquartered microfinance institution Grama Vidiyal
in an all-cash deal.
The company did not disclose the deal size. On finalisation of the deal, the MFI will become a wholly owned
subsidiary of the bank and act as a dedicated business correspondent for it.
The acquisition gives IDFC Bank access to Grama Vidiyal’s 12 lakh customers across seven States, besides
giving it 319 branches across 65 districts in these States.
The bank has obtained in-principle approval from the Reserve Bank of India for the deal.

Exercise RIMPAC 2016, the Pacific military exercise, began on 30 June 2016 at Hawaii with 26 nations
participating in the war games that will cover the Hawaiian Island and southern California.
The theme of RIMPAC 2016 is Capable, Adaptive, Partners. RIMPAC 2016 is the 25th exercise in the series that
began in 1971.
Twenty-six nations including India, 45 ships, five submarines, more than 200 aircraft, and 25000 personnel will
participate in the biennial Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise that is scheduled from 30 June to 4 August
2016.
NASA'S JUNO SUCCESSFULLY ENTERS JUPITER'S ORBIT
NASA's $1.1 billion Juno spacecraft has successfully entered the orbit of Jupiter, the largest planet of the solar
system.
It was launched five years ago, and will study Jupiter's composition, gravity, magnetic field and search clues
about the planet's formation.
INDIA SUCCESSFULLY TEST FIRES BALLISTIC MISSILE
‘BARAK-8' OFF ODISHA COAST
Ballistic missile Barak-8 was successfully tested from
Balasore district of Odisha. The missile was launched
from test fired from launch pad no-3 of the Integrated Test
Range (ITR) at Chandipur.
The Barak-8 is India’s new surface to air missile which is
developed jointly with the Israel.
The system also includes a multi-functional surveillance
and threat alert radar (MF STAR) for tracking, detection and guidance of the missile.
The medium range surface-to-air missile missile (MR-SAM) developed jointly by India and Israel was
successfully test-fired
The MR-SAM has strike ranges from 50 to 70 km.
ZSI TO RECORD CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACT ON ANIMALS IN FIVE HIMALAYAN STATES
The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) has launched long-term monitoring studies project to document the
effect of climate change on animal biodiversity in five Himalayan states.

The project has been funded by the Union Ministry for Environment, Forest and Climate Change
(MoEFCC).The duration of the project is for three years.

PORT TO IMPLEMENT LOGISTICS DATA TAGGING OF
CONTAINERS
The logistics data bank tagging of containers is a first of
its kind facility which will help importers and exporters
track their goods in transit.
A RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Tag) tag would
be attached to each container which would be tracked
through RIFD readers installed at different locations.
It will integrate the information available with various
agencies across the supply chain to provide detailed real-
time information within a single window.
INDIAN NAVAL SHIPS VISIT PORT KELANG, MALAYSIA
Indian Naval Ships Sahyadri, Shakti and Kirch have arrived at Port Kelang on a four day visit, as part of
deployment of the Eastern Fleet to the South China Sea and Western Pacific.
The INS Sahyadri is commanded by Captain K S Rajkumar, INS Shakti is commanded by Captain Gagan
Kaushal and INS Kirch is commanded by Commander Sharad Sinsunwal.
There, Indian Naval Ships will have professional interaction with the Royal Malaysian Navy for further
enhancing co-operation between the two forces.

CABINET APPROVED SET UP A NEW PORT IN TAMILNADU
The Union Cabinet has given its in – essence approval to setting up of a major port at Enayam near
Colachal in South Tamilnadu.
Chennai port trust, Kamarajar port trust, V.O.C Chidambaram port trust altogether sponsored a Special
Purpose Vehicle to develop the port infrastructure including dredging and construction, reclamation of
backwaters, ensuring connectivity etc.
AUTO INGRESS SETS UP FIRST ASSEMBLY UNIT IN TAMIL NADU
Auto Ingress, Manufacturing Company of automatic sensor doors has set up its first assembly unit at
Chennai (Maraimalai Nagar) with an investment of about Rs 12 crore.
The unit will assemble sliding, swing, revolving, telescopic, hermetic doors and gate accessories serving
both residential and commercial segments, a company statement read.

DEFENCE MINISTRY UNVEILS STATUE OF DR APJ ABDUL KALAM IN RAMESWARAM
On commemorating the first death anniversary of the former president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, the Ministry
of Defence has unveiled a life-size statue of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam at his burial site in Peikarumbu,
Rameswaram Island.

UNION RAILWAY MINISTER FLAGGED OFF INDIA’S FIRST EVER GREEN RAIL CORRIDOR BETWEEN
RAMESHWARAM – MANAMADURAI IN TN
The nation’s first Green Rail Corridor, a 114-km long Rameswaram-Manamadurai extent in Tamil Nadu
was inaugurated by Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu.
What is a Green Rail Corridor?
In order to improve cleanliness and hygiene, Trains in the green corridor have been fitted with bio-
toilets, which ensure zero discharge of human waste on the rail tracks.
All trains on this route will have bio-toilets to ensure zero discharge of human waste on the track. These
include 14 stations with 10 passenger trains, consisting of 286 coaches.
Indian railways signed a MoU with DRDO (Defence Research & Development Organization) for the
development of this technology.
This green corridor is aimed towards the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ initiated by Prime Minister Narendra
Modi and the Indian Railways have set the target of providing bio- toilets in all the coaches by September,
2019 in order to prevent open defaecetation on the railway tracks.

While analyzing the telecom connectivity spread across the urban areas of the nation, it is found that
Tamil Nadu tops the report with around 21 million urban internet subscribers, which is about 9% of the
total 231 million urban internet subscriber of India.

As a part of digitalizing India and BharatNet, the internet users increase rapidly both in rural and urban
areas of our country. This increasing rate shows that India’s connectivity is getting rationalized and
modernized under several criteria. The top five list as on March 2016 as follows:-
RURAL INTERNET CONNECTIVITY:-
On the other hand the rural internet connectivity is also on a gliding face reaching about 112 million
rural users in India, which is about one-third of the total Indian internet connectivity of 342 million.The
top lists of the rural internet connectivity are:-

♦ Maharashtra with 9.7 million users.

SECOND UNIT OF THE KUDANKULAM NUCLEAR POWER PLANT ACHIEVES CRITICALITY
Nuclear Power Corporation of India Chairman and Managing Director S K Sharma announced that the
second unit of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant attained criticality.
Criticality means a controlled and sustained fission chain reaction to produce a consistent and steady
stream of energy.
This will add 1000 MWe electricity to the southern grid and raise the contribution of nuclear power in
the country to 6780 MWe.

CENTRE APPOINTS THIRUPPATHI VENKATASAMY AS NEW TAMIL NADU AG
Centre announced the appointment of R Thiruppathi Venkatasamy, as Accountant
General(AG), economic and revenue sector audit, of Tamil Nadu.
Prior to this appointment, Venkatasamy a 2000 batch officer of Indian Audit and Accounts Service,
was serving as the Senior Deputy Accountant General in Agartala, Tripura.
