“YOU’D THINK THEY WERE ITALIAN”

afe Heavenly began 19 years ago as a sandwich and smoothie shop, but they have kept evolving the entire time. Having just opened their new

dining expansion of a Wood Fired Oven and Beer & Wine Bar, they are ready to again change the playing field of dining in New Smyrna beach with incredible

Artisan Wood Fired Pizza using very high end ingredients like Nueske bacon. (If you don’t know the name Nueske, you should. There’s nothing quite like it!).

Yes, “You’d Think They Were Italian” from the many high quality European offering not found in many Volusia County venues. We’ll start “with the Elephant in the room”, a massive 10,000 pound Mario Acunto Wood Fired oven shipped directly from Naples, Italy. Steve Williams, owner of Cafe Heavenly for the entire 19 years states, “If you want great Pizza, you have to start with a Wood Fire. There is nothing that equals that wood fired flavor!!” The wood is 100% dried kiln Oak, and of course, it’s very expensive, but “You must start with wood!!”Another Italian and European standard is Espresso and Cappuccino. In Italy and Europe, there is an Espresso Bar on every corner serving Espresso, Lattes and Cappuccinos, and not regular coffee so much, and Cafe Heavenly has been dedicated to making the finest coffees in the world. The process is much more complicated than

one would think. It begins by sourcing the coffee beans

and having them air freighted

straight to Cafe Heavenly. It is critical for the beans to be ground a few seconds before making the Espresso or Cappuccino, and the Grinder costs several thousands of dollars. A typical $39.95 grinder doesn’t have the consistency of ground particles. Another key part of making great coffees is the Espresso Machine, and Cafe Heavenly again has invested in the finest, a La Marzocco, considered the best in the world. If you were to go into almost any Espresso Bar in Paris, Florence, Vancouver or Seattle, you’d most likely see a La Marzocco. Again, it’s about the consistency and reliability.

Another Italian and European speciality that Cafe Heavenly has specialized in for the entire 19 year period is Gelato & Sorbetto. They are the standard of European ice cream treats. Gelato actually has fewer calories and fat than regular American Ice Cream because it’s made with milk instead of cream, but the process allows it to be even more creamy in taste than regular ice cream. Cafe Heavenly also makes 14% Butterfat ice cream each day, so the choice is yours. Another two Cafe Heavenly Employees have just returned from special Gelato Training in Concord, N.C. and now have their “Masters

of Gelato Certificate”. Perfection requires dedication!!

For many years now Cafe Heavenly has been winning First Place in the Volusia County Chowder Cook-Off, and once you taste their famous Lobster Bisque and

Clam Chowders, you’ll know why. They also ship these Chowders anywhere in the continental United States to be enjoyed with family and friends almost anywhere. But probably the most important evolution of Cafe Heavenly are the Lobster Rolls and other seafood specialities from 97% Lump Crab Cakes to Lobster or Mahi Tacos to Lobster Grilled Cheese to Lobster Sliders, all using only 100% Maine Lobster. Lobster prices have increased almost 50% in the past year, but Cafe Heavenly would never change the amount of lobster the Customer receives on their famous lobster choices. “You get what you pay for at Cafe Heavenly”!!One final key to Cafe Heavenly’s success is the Staff. They seem to know that the most important part of Cafe Heavenly is the Customer. You are warmly greeting when you enter and thanked when you leave. You are a Guest and are always offered samples of many of their specialities from Lobster Bisque to Gelato to their Homemade Sangria, Craft Beers and Wines. They even offer a special treat for your beloved doggies, and you are able to stop by anytime for a Doggie Treat without ever having to purchase anything. Cafe Heavenly LOVES Doggies. Cafe Heavenly’s Logo includes the phrase “Casual Gourmet”. Most would agree!

f you fancy some good old English Pub grub, then The Black Sheep Pub & Eating house is just the place for you! As the owners like to say, were taking a nod

from the pubs back home, or the “Locals” as we call them. Eddie Lipman, his wife Jacquie opened an authentic English Pub and Eating house in Ormond Beach with an urban twist. How real you may ask? Well just go up to Eddie and ask him. His accent will tell it all! You can’t make that up. Eddie and his Family moved here from England in 1981 to start a business in wholesale jewelry and watches. The Flea Market business was booming during the 1980’s so they traveled from Jacksonville to Ft. Lauderdale supplying merchandise to market vendors. But as times grew harder and knock off jewelry and watches became the competition, they decided to shift gears and change the way they made a living. An acquaintance of Eddie’s told him of a restaurant that was for sale in the Daytona Beach area. Eddie had grown up in the restaurant business in England, so Union Jacks Pub in Daytona Beach Shores soon opened with great success. A couple of hockey players from the Sun Devils ice hockey team wanted to buy Union Jacks and after much persuasion, Eddie gave in and sold the restaurant. Port Orange became their new home. There, Eddie opened Lawton’s Restaurant and later The Sly Fox Inn. After sixteen years, Eddie sold all of his restaurants and went into semi-retirement. Soon, retirement became boring. Once again Eddie began to look at restaurant locations. Samantha, Eddie’s daughter, heard the Bennigan’s Restaurant was available in Ormond Beach. Six months later, The Black Sheep Pub & Eating House became a reality. English, Irish and American fare is the makeup of their menu. They have something for everyone. Irish Steak and Potato Pie, Belfast Bangers and Mash, Black Sheep-herds Pie, and their award winning famous Fish & Chips. Be hungry when you come to eat as they serve massive portions of scrumptious Pub Food. They also have Steaks like a 10oz. New York Strip, a 12 oz. Delmonico or Scotch Filet as it’s called in England. Also Pork Chops, Shrimp, Chicken Breast and pasta dishes are on the

menu, all seasoned and served to perfection with your choice of Pub Fries, Potato or Rice and the veggie of the day. They feature a huge selection of burgers, sandwiches, wings, soups, salads and appetizers. The Kiddies have their own menu as well. When you dine with them, don’t be in a rush, as everything is prepared and cooked to order. They have Daily Lunch Specials that start at $5.95 and more. So enjoy a pint and take in the atmosphere while your delicious dinner is being prepared. Every ingredient is the best available and hand selected by Eddie to insure a great meal. The bar is huge with seating on all sides for viewing the large HDTV’s. They sport a well stocked full liquor bar with premium craft beers, imports and domestics. They feature 30 draft beers on tap and over 50 bottled. They are planning beer pairings, where you will be able to taste fantastic food paired with the appropriate beer. The beer selections change with the seasons, so you will always get that favorite seasonal flavor. The atmosphere and decor is warm and wonderful, thanks to Samantha, their daughter’ and her many years as an interior decorator. Jacquie sees to it that there are plenty of things to do at The Black Sheep with, British Dart Boards, Shuffle Board, Wednesday night Live Team Trivia, and Locals Night starts at 3 pm and Happy Hour all Night till close on Wednesday. athy Steindecker and Mike Pomeroy have been in the restaurant business all of their lives. Both of their families owned restaurants, delicatessens and catering

businesses on Long Island. Cathy’s father taught she and her twin sister to cook when they were still little girls. Mike started at age 13. Cathy’s sister was recently on the TV show “ Hells Kitchen” season 7, with Gordon Ramsay. Cathy’s father owned Adron’s Delicatessen in Brooklyn. Cathy and Mike always dreamed of owning their own deli / restaurant, six years ago they moved to Florida and made that dream a reality. It started with a small rundown restaurant on Mary Ave. in New Smyna Beach. Everything in that place had to be renovated. After countless weeks of hard work, they brought the restaurant back to life and called it Cathy & Mikes Suds & Subs. This was a combination sports bar, deli and sub shop all in one unit. Cathy and Mike still wanted to open a New York style eatery and crabhouse. They found a larger restaurant with more parking in a small strip center on US -1 in Edgewater. They renovated this location, changed the name to Cathy & Mikes NY Eatery and Crabhouse and opened a little over a year ago with great success. This is one of our best kept secrets, but the word is getting out. They are an award wining restaurant, voted “The Best Overall in Southeast Volusia County” two times winner “Best Manhattan Clam Chowder,” “Best NY Reubens in Volusia County” and “ Best Take Out Star of the South Award”. Cathy claims that their philosophy is working, “Offer great tasting food, great service, big portions at affordable prices and people will come”. The food is fantastic and is way cheaper than what you will find on the beaches. Well worth the 4 mile ride From New Smyrna Beach to Edgewater. In fact, people are coming in from all over the state. The menu is wide and varied with many breakfast, lunch and dinner options. Many are New York Italian influenced dishes, along with many New England style entrees. Every item is prepared fresh to order. You will not find any frozen food in their kitchen except the bread that she flies in from New York, and bakes fresh daily. She even

Across THE Table

Hamburger Mary’s is one of the most unique, exciting dining and entertainment venues in our area. They are serving up fantastic burgers, sandwiches, salads, decadent desserts and saucy entertainment, pardon the pun! Everything is fun at Mary’s, the “Las Vegas Revue Drag Shows” are family friendly and just a real good time. The entertainers are Vegas quality and very talented. Entertainment happens every day in one form or another at Mary’s. It is best to look at their Facebook page to find the entertainment schedule. They have two different dining areas, one at the front of the restaurant where you can dine, drink and people watch along historic Beach Street, then the show and dining room. Both are very spacious with large HD TV’s that plays your favorite sports all day. They also feature a full liquor bar with a nice selection of craft beers and drafts. The namesake burgers are enormous half pounders that have fun names like the “Proud Mary Burger” the “Queen Mary“ the “Black & Bleu Boy” all cooked to your liking and dressed to fit your taste. The sandwiches

or “Sammies” as they are called, also have fun names like the “Bird of Paradise” their version of a Turkey Club piled high with warm slices of turkey, bacon, tomato and avocado topped with melted cheddar and Mary’s signature herb mayo. The BLT & A is of course a BLT with avocado served on your choice of bread, this is huge! All “Burgers” and “Sammies” are served with your choice of Tasty fresh cut seasoned fries or Cole Slaw. For a dollar more, you can upgrade to Sweet Potato Fries or Onion Rings. Be sure to check out the Sunday Brunch La Cage Show at 1:30 pm with drink and food specials. The prices are very reasonable and the service is second to none. There are some small cover charges during the bigger events, but also very reasonable. For something tasty, different and fun, visit Hamburger Mary’s. You will have all your friends wanting to come when you tell them about your experience at Mary’s. They are located at 180 North Beach Street, Daytona Beach (Mainland). You can call for info at 386-256-2564 or visit them on Facebook/MARYSDAYTONABEACH.
