Dear Friends:

One hundred and forty-two grants ago, the USTA Tennis &Education Foundation began its life as the philanthropic entityof the United States Tennis Association. It was an idea thatgerminated in the minds of the USTA Board members andsenior staff that came to fruition in the presidency of JudyLevering, moved forward in the term of Merv Heller, andgrew and flourished with the help of Alan Schwartz andFranklin Johnson.

Letter from the President and Executive Director

Our Mission

The USTA Tennis & Education Foundation is dedicated toimproving the quality of life of children and adults, peoplewith disabilities, and others with special needs, through tennis and education programs that are based on health, fitness, character-building and self improvement…buildinglives through tennis and education.

This report contains a summary of the accomplishments ofthe USTA Tennis & Education Foundation in the past twoyears. Revenue generation has been noteworthy, and we aregrateful to you for your generosity, but we also measureachievement in human terms. How many students have goneon to college because of our scholarship program? Howmany children have a safe place to go after school where theycan learn to play tennis and learn about healthy lifestyles? These are the other ways by which we measure success.

The primary goal of the Foundation is to help childrendevelop into healthy, educated, and productive members oftheir communities. With this in mind, in 2004, “Aces forKids,” an initiative of the Foundation was created. We aredelighted that so many programs across the country are in-sync with our philosophy of developmentally appropriateyouth programming by providing homework assistance andtutoring, instruction about healthy nutrition and lifestyles, mentoring, college preparation classes, and access to computertechnology to develop champion citizens as well as lifelongtennis players.

We are grateful to the members of our Board of Directorswho graciously give of their time and resources in support ofour mission. Their service on our College Scholarship andGrant Proposal Review Committees is invaluable. In makingour determinations, we rely on input from the USTANational staff, as well as from the USTA Sections and community volunteers to assist in the due diligence. They areour eyes and ears across the country and their advice is inestimable. After scholarships and grants are awarded, theFoundation staff maintains contact with the recipients andrequires progress reports to make certain that your contribution and those of other donors are being spentaccording to their original intent. The USTA Tennis &Education Foundation is highly attuned to its role as a steward for the contributions of our donors and thus feelsvery strongly about the accountability of funding.

We reserve a very special thanks for our immediate pastPresident Pam Shriver for her dedication and service to theFoundation. Pam’s leadership and belief in our mission helpedto put the T&EF on the philanthropy map and we trulyappreciate her selfless giving and friendship.

As you read this report, you should feel a sense of prideand achievement for what you have helped the USTA Tennis& Education Foundation to accomplish. Thanks to you, welook forward to “building more lives through tennis and education” in even more communities!

Sincerely,

Patrick McEnroe Karen Martin-EliezerPresident Executive Director
