Making Tennis Make A Difference

Who doesn’t want to make a difference? Who doesn’t want to leave a footprint in this world? Who doesn’t want to

extend a helping hand? I don’t know of any-one who wouldn’t help if they could. We all are basically unselfish and are ready to help if we

become aware of a situation where we can make a difference.

Benevolence actually goes on thousands of times by many people throughout our country daily. Most times, it goes unnoticed.

All USTA members are actually guardian angels to many children and needy communities simply by being members. A closely guarded secret is that the USTA contributes $45 Million each year to communities (via the sections) to help hundreds of thousands of children and adults learn and the enjoy the wonderful sport of tennis.

More than 170,000 free rackets were contributed to schools for after-school programs last year to start kids into a lifetime sport with tremen-dous health benefits, in addition to tutoring opportunities and homework assistance to insure kids make it in the classroom as well as on the courts.

In 2009, the USTA provided more than $1 million in recreation grants around the country to recreation centers, parks, YMCAs and school districts to introduce tennis to a population that would otherwise never would learn to play the sport.

The USTA supports wheelchair and adaptive tennis events. They want everybody who wants to play our sport to have the opportunity to enjoy the sport. New QuickStart-format tournaments for 10-and-under are being supported with new money, $1.5 Million and $4.5 Million diverted from other programs to support facility infrastructure and drawing of QST lines in existing facilities to attract the 10-and-under population to join us and start playing our beloved sport.

I could go on and on, but the point is made – your USTA membership is of paramount importance in growing our game.

There are 5 million frequent players out there that are enjoying Tennis and are not USTA members. Wouldn’t it be nice if some of them joined us? I wonder if they are aware of the impact they could make to children, challenged populations, schools and inner-city parks by becoming USTA members?

It is common knowledge that most new members join the USTA in order to play leagues, now numbering 330,000 (a new record). Isn’t it time that all frequent players knew about the USTA’s benevolent side? Unfortunately, the majority of the frequent non-member players will not read this article or any other USTA publication with interesting facts about the organiza-tion’s benevolence.

It is up to us – you and me – to talk about our organization so others may be moved into joining. If they all knew what the USTA does to grow the game, don’t you think they would come on board?

We strongly believe in the historic

relevance and documentation of our annual award winners, rankings, volunteer leaders, and stories of each year.

So we invite you to put this on your coffee table or mantle and read at your leisure. Save your yearbooks to one place so that you may some day look back and enjoy the memories and remember why tennis is the greatest sport for youth, adults, friends, and family.

Tennis Growth ContinuesSince the boom time of the 70’s and 80’s, tennis has not had such resurgence as it has now. In fact, tennis is now enjoying a second

boom since those days.

It started with a report from the Tennis Industry Association at the end of 2009. Tennis participation had reached a 25 year high of 30 million players which successfully reached the 30 by 2010 goal set over six years ago. By the end of 2010, that figure dropped to 28.5 million players. That may sound bad, yet it is the 2nd highest number of players we have ever had and happened in a poor economic year. Tennis continues to outdistance all the other traditional sports in growth over the past 10 years with an astound-ing 43% growth. Only Racquetball and Basketball show any growth during that time and they are more than 30 decimal points lower than tennis. Football, baseball, golf, softball, ice hockey, and gymnastics have all suffered a decline in participation during the same period.

1) Johns Hopkins research shows tennis as the leading heart-healthy sport among the same list.

2) An 88% growth in the sale of youth rackets from 2003 through 2008 bodes well for the future of tennis also.

Unlike the boom of 30 years ago, our current efforts with the CTA Expansion Plan, QuickStart, and all of our other programs give us a stronger infrastructure on which to maintain the growth. Although the economic climate could have some negative effect, our sense is that tennis is a sport easy to participate in good times and bad. On Saturday, February 12, the United States Tennis Association Texas section presented its annual awards at the 2010 Texas Tennis Hall of Fame Recognition and USTA-USPTA Awards

Banquet at The Hilton DFW Lakes Executive Conference Center in Grapevine, Texas.

Larry Evans of San Angelo (USTA Texas Randy Snow Wheelchair Tennis Service Award), Vickie Wright of Austin (Umpire of the Year), Jack Newman of Austin (Lloyd Sessions Educational Merit Award), Emily Coxe of Beaumont (USTA Texas Community Service Award), Mary John Lynch of Corpus Christi (Julius Zinn Seniors’ Service Award), Ron Wesbrooks of Beaumont (W.T. Caswell Service Award) and the Jim and Deb Cahill Family of Austin (USTA Texas Family of the Year) were all recognized for their contributions to tennis.

Established in 2009, the USTA Texas Randy Snow Wheelchair Tennis Service Award, was created to honor a volunteer, wheelchair player, teaching professional or coach, who has over time demon-strated excellence in the sport of wheelchair tennis and/or whose activities evidence dedication to improving, advancing and promot-ing the state of wheelchair tennis in his/her USTA Texas community.

The USTA Texas Umpire of the Year Award, established in 1981, recognizes an USTA certified official for his/her outstanding ser-vice and time spent working to strengthen officiating in the Texas Section.

Inaugurated in 1989, the USTA Texas Community Service Award honors an individual who provides outstanding contributions in promoting and conducting recreational tennis programs for adults and/or juniors.

The Lloyd Sessions Educational Merit Award, established in 1979, recognizes an individual that is actively involved with junior players. This individual must exhibit outstanding activities at a professional level in building stronger junior tennis players at all levels of play.

First awarded in 1962, the W. T. Caswell Service Award is given to the Texas resident who has made valuable contributions to the growth and development of tennis in Texas, working as a volunteer within the framework of the USTA Texas section.

Since 1975 the USTA Texas section has honored a family for their contributions to Texas tennis as the USTA Texas Family of the Year.

The Julius Zinn Seniors’ Service Award was first awarded in 1997 and honors a senior member of the USTA Texas Section who has made a contribution through his/her efforts, willingness, coop-eration, and participation. This individual is most deserving of the respect and honor of the seniors, either in play and/or organiza-tional work for the betterment and furtherance of senior activities.

Adrian BeyAdrian Bey was born in

Salisbury, Rhodesia (now known as Harare, Zimbabwe), where he attended Prince Edward School. Although he started playing ten-nis on the family courts when he was young, it was at the age of 16 when he started to play serious-ly. He began playing in tourna-ments in South Africa. His coach-es include Brian Rooke and C.V. Irvine. His greatest tennis accom-plishments include reaching the last sixteen at Wimbledon twice

and getting to the semifinals of the French Open in doubles. His best memories of the sport are qualifying and playing at Wimbledon for the first time and captaining, managing, and playing on the Davis Cup team for Rhodesia. He began to teach the game of tennis after he quit playing professionally and opened a sports shop.

Sammy Giammalva, Jr.Sammy Giammalva, Jr. was

born in Houston. He attended Memorial High School and Alexander Smith Academy. He earned an Economics degree from Rice University after his playing days. Sammy learned how to play tennis from his father, Sammy Giammalva, Sr., who always encouraged him to make tennis fun. Sammy became the National Junior Champion by winning the Boys 18’s at Kalamazoo in 1980. In his first

professional tournament, the 1981 River Oaks International, played before a hometown crowd, an 18-year old Sammy announced his presence to the world. He played inspired tennis, rallying to win back-to-back three-setters and reached the final before falling to Guillermo Vilas. During his career he won two singles titles and four doubles titles, including the 1984 Tokyo Indoors with his brother Tony. He achieved a career-high singles ranking of World No. 28 in 1985 and a career-high doubles ranking of World No. 22 in 1984. His all-court game, playing on the baseline and taking the ball on the rise, suited him well on all surfaces as he reached ATP finals on clay, grass, hard and carpet. His best memories include winning Kalamazoo, playing in his first Pro Tournament in his hometown, tennis clinics with his dad, and playing tennis with his family. He now continues to grow the game, owning his own club in Spring and making tennis fun for generations to come.

Marti RodriguezMarti Rodriguez was born

in Austin, but later attended New Braunfels High School. She attended UT-Austin, UT-Arlington and the University of North Texas, receiving her degree in History, as well as her Texas Teaching Certificate. She only began playing rec-reational tennis after joining the staff at the Texas Tennis Association in 1983. Her great-est tennis accomplishment was being the driving force in creat-

ing what is now the three-tiered junior tennis pyramid in Texas. She became the ‘go-to’ USTA Texas staff person for competitive tennis and was the face of junior tennis for a generation of junior tennis players. Her legacy continues with a tennis tournament held in her name (The Annual Marti Rodriguez Memorial-Austin ZAT) and a perpetual scholarship fund administered by the Texas Tennis and Education Foundation. Marti treasured the days when she helped with tournaments and got the chance to watch young people take up the game she loved.

Alex O’BrienAlex O’Brien was born in

Amarillo and attended Tascosa High School. He later went on to college at Stanford, where he earned an American Studies degree in 1992. He began play-ing tennis because his older brother, Blake, played and Alex looked up to him. Some of his coaches were Dennis Crowell, Jon Soegaard, Dick Gould, Keith Diepraam, and Jonathan Canter. A few of his great-est tennis accomplishments

include winning the 1999 U.S. Open Doubles Championship with Sébastien Lareau, being a Davis Cup team member, representing the United States at the Olympics in Sydney, a New Haven singles win, and becoming number one in the World in doubles. He also captured the amazing ‘college triple’ in 1992, winning the NCAA singles, doubles and team titles. He also reached the three other Grand Slam finals, one more U.S. Open and two Australian Opens. He was the No. 1 doubles player in the world (gaining that rank-ing on May 8, 2000) and was ranked as high as 30 in the world in singles (gaining that ranking on June 21, 1997).
