MAKING A DIFFERENCEDear Friends,

Our supporters are the cornerstones for the USTA Foundation to fulfill its mission to change the lives of youth through tennis and education. In so many ways every day, the USTAF flagship NJTL programs impact children’s lives in the afterschool setting with positive experiences on and off the tennis court.

In 2017 and 2018, new milestones were reached with two major pledges and generous donations from hundreds of contributors.

We are excited to report that a longtime supporter made a $5 million gift to be fulfilled over five years, to ensure the continued growth of our tennis and education programs. This commitment will enable USTAF to offer a library of education programs, including its widely acclaimed A.C.E. curriculum, to provide access to outstanding community tennis and education programs to thousands of youth.

In addition to receiving unprecedented programmatic support, USTAF was approached two years ago by a Foundation Advisory Board member to create a world-class athletic and academic facility on the West Coast in an underserved area of South Los Angeles. Through the generosity of the Kimmelman family, their friends, and our many partners, and after two years of hard work with architects and collaboration with the City of Los Angeles, plans to construct a multi-sport community center as a legacy to the late Carol Kimmelman, a tireless and dedicated USTAF Board member, are becoming a reality. With $55 million pledged to date, the Carol Kimmelman Athletic and Academic Campus groundbreaking is currently scheduled for early 2020.

In 2019, NJTL will celebrate 50 years since it was founded in 1969 on public tennis courts as a result of the “dreams” of Arthur Ashe, Charlie Pasarell, and Sheridan Snyder who wanted all children to see brighter futures. Let’s keep on dreaming and making a dif ference for generations to come.

PROGR AMS OVERVIEWUSTAF offers tools and resources to facilitate the growth and development of tennis and education for under-

resourced youth in their communities.

The NJTL network of nearly 300 independent nonprofit programs serving approximately 180,000 youth

nationwide, has received more than $40 million in program services, grants and scholarships to the NJTL

network since 1994.

Following organizational assessments in 2017, USTAF selected 22 NJTL chapters for assistance through

its Capacity Building program by providing direct oversight in areas ranging from Board development to

accounting, finance, and operations. As a result of these efforts, program chapters have increased budgets,

and five chapters gained four-star status, the highest rating for NJTL chapter performance.

The NJTL Excellence Teams program is an extension of the NJTL community program. Coaches have identified

a group of 296 promising student-athletes whose hard work, talent, and perseverance have earned them

spots on 13 NJTL Excellence Teams nationwide. These players receive additional coaching, equipment, and

tournament travel expenses are covered at no cost.

The NJTL National Essay Contest presented by Deloitte attracts more than 2,000 essay contest entries

annually. Winners in five age groups travel to New York City during the US Open to receive their awards,

attend the US Open, and to enjoy cultural activities. 2018 was the first year of a three-year partnership

between USTAF and Deloitte.

ESPN LEAGUE HUMANITARIAN LEADERSHIP AWARD USTAF received the prestigious ESPN League Humanitarian Leadership Award and a $100,000 grant in

2017 at a ceremony celebrating leagues, teams, individuals and members of the sporting community that

are using the power of sport to make a positive impact on society.

The awards ceremony was held for the first time at L.A. LIVE’s The Novo and hosted by former professional

boxer Laila Ali and Mike Greenberg, co-host of ESPN’s “Mike and Mike.”

USTAF directed the grant proceeds to benefit nearly 300 NJTL chapters allowing them to continue

providing quality tennis and educational programming to nearly 180,000 under-resourced youth.

This is the first time that USTAF was nominated for the ESPN League Humanitarian Leadership Award.

"The USTA Foundation is proud to be recognized by ESPN with this prestigious award,” said Dan Faber,

USTA Foundation Executive Director. “We accept this award on behalf of the entire NJTL Network and

recognize its work in impacting hundreds of thousands of under-resourced youth around the country

through tennis and education programs.

“We are extremely grateful to those who have supported our efforts in everything we do, from improving

the organizational infrastructures of NJTLs through funding and technical support, to offering college

scholarships so students can successfully excel in their academic endeavors,” continued Faber. “A special

thank you to former USTA President Judy Levering for establishing the USTA Foundation back in 1994 and

for her ongoing passion and commitment. Judy's vision made it all happen."

EXCELLENCE ON THE COURT AND IN THE CLASSROOM

Thirteen NJTL Excellence Teams serving 296 youth ages 8-18 nationwide have continued to produce

outstanding results on the court and in the classroom.

NJTL community program participants are invited to join NJTL Excellence Teams based on the student-

athlete’s talent and commitment to training as well as educational aspirations.

95% of NJTL Excellence Team members have GPA’s of 3.0 or higher. College acceptances in 2018

included University of Michigan, Dartmouth, University of Maryland, and Southern Methodist University,

among many other outstanding colleges and universities.

The NJTL Excellence Teams Cup has become a highlight of the year when the teams come together

at the Junior Tennis Champions Center (JTCC) in College Park, MD for a weekend of competition

including both tennis and academic challenges that earn points for each team to determine the winner.

Activities include singles and doubles tournaments, a tour of Washington, DC monuments, a spelling

bee, a relay race, and a quiz on the history of the Lincoln, Jefferson, Martin Luther King Jr. and World

War II monuments.

TEAM EVENTS BENEFIT USTAF WASHINGTON KASTLES

The Washington Kastles Congressional

Charity Tennis Classic and the Laver Cup—

two high profile professional tennis “team”

events—added USTAF to their team in 2018

by designating USTAF as their official charity

beneficiary raising nearly $250,000 for seven

NJTL programs.

The 6th Annual Washington Kastles

Congressional Charity Tennis Classic featured

media, celebrities, and political superstars

turned tennis players taking the court for

a fun-filled competition on July 24, 2018 to

fundraise for underserved youth.

As the designated charitable beneficiary of the event, USTAF directed proceeds to three NJTL chapters

in the Washington metropolitan area: Washington Tennis & Education Foundation, Metropolitan Tennis &

Education Group, and JTCC.

The bipartisan event anchored by Washington Kastles stars was created with the sole purpose of giving

back to the community. Legendary Hall of Famer Nick Bollettieri hosted a Kids’ Clinic for local youth before

coaching Team Stars who faced off against Team Stripes coached by Kastles’ head coach Murphy Jensen.

NBC news anchor Andrea Mitchell welcomed the teams to kick off the evening. Throughout the match,

Tennis Channel’s Brett Haber kept the fans engaged from the umpire chair with spirited commentary. New

York Times' tennis writer Ben Rothenberg simultaneously entertained a national audience via a live stream

broadcast of the match play.

Washington Kastles owner Mark Ein and the Kastles' Tennys Sandgren, went head-to-head with Murphy

Jensen and DC United coach Ben Olsen.

Congressional representatives included Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), Tom Rooney (R-FL),

Jared Huffman (D-CA), and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WVA), joined by former Rep. Kevin Yoder (R-KS) and

former Sen. John Breaux (D-LA).

With Team Stripes prevailing in a hotly contested match, 47-42, that went to overtime, area youth were the

LAVER CUP The USTA Foundation was selected as the official beneficiary of the 2018 Laver Cup held in Chicago, IL

in September following the U.S. Open. Four Chicago area NJTL chapters received proceeds from the

glamorous opening night gala, USTAF brunch, and the Laver Cup tournament.

Students representing the Ace Project, Love to Serve,

Tennis Opportunity Program, and XS Tennis & Education

enjoyed the experience of meeting Roger Federer and the

stars from Team Europe and Team World before the youth

were recognized onstage at the gala for their commitment

to tennis and education.

Following the Laver Cup Gala, attended by 30 USTAF

benefactors, more than 150 USTAF supporters turned out at

the Midtown Athletic Club for a brunch headlined by USTAF

ambassador Chris Evert, who participated in a lively Q & A

session with USTA President Katrina Adams.

The brunch benefiting USTAF was organized and hosted by former USTA Presidents and USTAF Honorary

Board members Jon Vegosen and Alan Schwartz, who continue to demonstrate their tireless commitment

to the USTAF mission.

Following the brunch, USTAF tennis enthusiasts headed off to see Team World's Frances Tiafoe face off

against Team Europe's Grigor Dimitrov in the opening round of the Laver Cup. Team World Captain John

McEnroe and Team Europe Captain Bjorn Borg led strong teams, but Team Europe triumphed 13-8.

USTA Foundation also partnered with the Laver Cup and the USTA to refurbish four public tennis courts

at Garfield Park in Chicago providing a Laver Cup legacy, providing kids access to high-quality facilities

and programs.

JIMMY EVERT SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Following the August, 2015 passing of legendary tennis coach Jimmy Evert, father of Hall-of-Famer

Chris Evert, the Evert family established the Jimmy Evert Scholarship Fund in partnership with USTAF.

The Jimmy Evert Scholarship Fund supports after-school academic tutoring, college counseling and

advanced tennis training through tournaments, clinics, private lessons and camps for NJTL participants

with a focus on Excellence Teams players ages 8-14 nationwide. Recipients are invited to attend the Evert

Academy in Boca Raton, FL and train with top national coaches.

In addition, USTAF awards Jimmy Evert Scholarships to participants in USTA Player Development

programs. Together, USTA Player Development representatives and the Evert family select the

scholarship winners.

“For all of the recipients, the Jimmy Evert Scholarships represent an opportunity to become Champions

in Life creating the same positive impact that Jimmy Evert did for each of his students,” said USTAF

Executive Director Dan Faber.

OPENING NIGHT GALA PRESENTED BYThe US Open’s glamorous opening night ceremony has set the stage for the

USTAF’s Opening Night Gala at the US Open for nearly two decades. The annual

event highlights USTAF's mission to fund tennis, education and health programs

for hundreds of community-based, grassroots programs across the country

benefiting thousands of youth.

In 2017, the star-studded event was a phenomenal success raising more than $1.1

million. ESPN was the presenting sponsor for the Opening Night Gala for the

third year making a major donation to the Foundation in the amount of $150,000.

Emmy Award winner Alec Baldwin and tennis champion Martina Navratilova were

enthusiastic co-hosts. Among the luminaries in attendance were Vera Wang,

Anna Wintour, Mike Tyson, Mariska Hargitay, Martha Stewart, Megyn Kelly and Gayle King. They joined a

sellout crowd who posthumously honored USTAF Board Members Fred Shen and Carol Kimmelman with

the “Serving Up Dreams” Award for their dedication in supporting the principles and ideals of the USTA

Foundation. The Opening Night Ceremony at the 2017 US Open helped kick off the 20th anniversary

celebration of Arthur Ashe Stadium in style. The gala’s 200 guests filled the President’s Suite and were

treated to the on-court Opening Night ceremony featuring global superstar, Shania Twain. Guests wrapped

up their evening with courtside seating for the opening night matches.

In 2018, USTAF raised more than $1.6 million from the 18th annual Opening Night Gala presented again

by ESPN. Hosted by Billie Jean King and ESPN's Mike Greenberg, more than 200 guests and celebrities,

including Katie Couric, Mayor David Dinkins, Hugh Jackman, Daymond John, and many returning

superstars, gathered in the Arthur Ashe Stadium President's Suite to honor longtime USTAF Board member

Richard Ader, for his demonstrated personal commitment to USTAF's mission. Among the auction items

which raised more than over $100,000 were, a priceless experience to meet country music star Luke Bryan

with VIP concert seats, a Disney dream package and Finals weekend at the US Open in the President's

Suite. After dinner, guests enjoyed the Opening Night Ceremony which featured Kelly Clarkson and world-

class tennis from the best seats in the house.

PRO-AM AT THE US OPENThe Pro-Am at the US Open offers amateur players a memorable tennis experience of a lifetime by

trading backhands with and returning serves from some of the greatest champions of all time. While

competing with and against former world #1 players, Grand Slam winners, and current coaches and

commentators, generous USTAF donors contributed nearly $1 million in 2017 and 2018 to support the

USTAF mission.

Amateurs exchanged serves and volleys with Tracy Austin,

Marion Bartoli, James Blake, Pat Cash, Michael Chang,

Kim Clijsters, Lindsay Davenport, Mary Joe Fernandez,

Jan Michael Gambill, Martina Hingis, Luke Jensen,

Murphy Jensen, Henri Leconte, Martina Navratilova, Mark

Philippoussis, and Arantxa Sánchez Vicario. After winning in

2016, amateur Rob Pohly accomplished a three-peat and took

home the winner’s trophy again in 2017 and 2018.

After a morning of spirited competition, Pro-Am participants

enjoyed lunch and an afternoon watching the men’s doubles

final and men’s semifinals.

TENNIS FANTASY CAMPUSTAF and USTA Player Development co-hosted the first Tennis Fantasy Camp in 2017 which was an

immediate "hit" at the USTA National Campus. Participants spent a fun-filled weekend in Orlando, FL

training like the world's elite professional players. Many of the participants returned for another

successful camp in 2018.

Designed as a high performance player

training camp, the eager "students"

received instruction from current USTA

National Coaches and other veteran coaches

offering drills, practice plans, video analysis,

competition, and educational seminars.

Throughout the weekend, they trained

alongside "campers" Ivan Lendl, Jim Courier,

Mary Joe Fernandez, Brian Gottfried, and Hall

of Fame coach Nick Bollettieri. Net proceeds,

which are designated to USTAF and USTA

Player Development, exceeded $500,000 for

2017 and 2018.

JUDY LEVERING LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE (JLLI)Judy Levering has been making a difference in thousands of lives as one of the most influential USTA

volunteer leaders. The first woman to serve as USTA President, Judy was instrumental in establishing

the USTA Foundation in 1994. In recognition of her dedication to helping others, the Judy Levering

Leadership Initiative (JLLI) was created by the USTAF to accelerate the growth of the NJTL Network

and improve the quality of grassroots tennis and education organizations. Since the JLLI was created

in 2010, more than $400,000 has been directed by USTAF towards funding leadership training in

connection with its national Capacity Building program.

Each year, a reception is held at the USTA Annual Meeting to celebrate JLLI and present the USTAF

Outstanding Service Award. The award is given to an individual who embodies the values of dedicated

service to help advance the USTAF mission and the NJTL network.

JLLI 2017 recipients were USTAF Board member Amy Smith and former USTA President Jon Vegosen. In

2018, former USTA Treasurer Don Tisdel received the award posthumously.

PAVER PROGRAM RELAUNCHEDSince 2005, USTAF has been “paving” the way to secure funding for the future through the Avenue

of Aces® Brick and Paver program, which raised over $250,000 in 2017 and 2018.

The Avenue of Aces® is the USTAF’s most visible donor-sponsored program at the USTA Billie Jean

King National Tennis Center, home of the US Open.

The Avenue of Aces® is a collection of personalized bricks and pavers that form the walkway from

the East Gate Plaza entrance to Arthur Ashe Stadium.

In 2010, “neighborhoods” were introduced on the Avenue of Aces®. Starting with legendary

champion Billie Jean King, eight additional US Open Champion neighborhoods were developed

recognizing Andre Agassi, Chris Evert, Stefanie Graf, Ivan Lendl, John McEnroe, Martina

Navratilova, Pete Sampras and Randy Snow,

US Open Wheelchair champion.

Due to the renovation and transformation

of the USTA Billie Jean King National

Tennis Center and construction of a new

Louis Armstrong Stadium, the Avenue of

Aces was removed in 2017 and replaced

in 2018. When the new Louis Armstrong

was unveiled in 2018, the Avenue of

Aces had been reimagined, reinstalled,

and relaunched, and included a NEW

neighborhood.

US Open Doubles Champions are being

celebrated in the NEW neighborhood

including all-time great champions Bob

and Mike Bryan, Martina Navratilova and

Pam Shriver, and John McEnroe and Peter Fleming. Tennis fans and USTAF supporters can now

purchase pavers in honor of their own teams – college teams, USTA Adult League teams, Tennis On

Campus teams and more. Donors’ names surround their favorite champion and hold a permanent

place at the US Open.

PARTICIPANT PROFILERobin Montgomery is an exemplary NJTL Excellence Team player, who at age 14 has already shown through

her results that tennis and education are a winning combination.

Robin has proven what time, dedication, and hard work can achieve -- having first earned the USTA National

Girls’ 12 & Under #2 ranking followed quickly by a USTA National Girls’ 14 & Under Top 10 ranking and most

recently, while still 14, having reached #70 in the USTA National Girls’ 18 & Under rankings and #106 in the

ITF World Junior rankings.

Raised in Washington, DC, Robin began playing tennis at the age of four after her mother, Gabrielle

Montgomery, discovered the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park, MD and signed her up for

a lesson. There was no looking back. Robin joined the GEICO Game On NJTL community tennis program

where she excelled, and by the age of seven, she had progressed to become a member of the JTCC Team

Wilander NJTL Excellence Team.

Robin’s win/loss record as a junior is an impressive 330 – 124, including reaching the quarterfinals of the

Orange Bowl Girls’ Under 18’s and being a member of the winning International Tennis Club World Junior

Championship team in November, 2018.

Mother Gabrielle and daughter Robin have nothing but good things to say about how USTAF’s NJTL

programs have helped them both on and off the court.

“NJTL has added balance between life and tennis,” explained Gabrielle. “At tournaments it is very easy

to become wrapped up and obsessed. Our NJTL experience has provided balance between tennis and

education. We have been surrounded by a positive, supportive, and healthy community.

Based on her results to date, and with her mind set on becoming a world top 20 tennis professional in the

future, the sky is certainly the limit for Robin.
