USTA Pacific Northwest May 2013 www.pnw.usta.com It’s an exciting time for the USTA/PNW and we are working hard to ex- pand and enhance your playing opportunities. We are currently in the process of evaluating and improving the USTA League experience for our adult players in the upcoming 2014 season. But it will be hard to improve on the performance of our USTA/PNW league teams at the recent na- tional championships as we had several teams finish in the top four and two come home with national titles. We are also gaining momentum for our new recreational programs as Tennis Afterschool Zone (TAZ) kicked off last month and introduced the sport to kids in schools in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Both kids and adults can find many ways to play this sunny spring, whether it’s in tournaments, USTA Jr. Team Tennis or adult team tennis in our Mixed, 40 & Over or One Doubles leagues. We encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities! 2014 USTA League Pacific Northwest Plan Coming Soon The USTA/PNW Board of Directors has asked new Section League Coordinator Adam Hutchinson to conduct a comprehensive review of the USTA League program. Part of this review has included Town Hall meetings throughout the Pacific Northwest, one-on-one meetings with many facilities, many email and phone conversations, discussions with Local League Coordinators and meetings with the USTA/PNW Adult Competition Committee. All of this information will be utilized in proposing changes which are intended to improve your USTA League experience. In previous years, information about Early Start Leagues has usually been released by May 1. In 2013, release of this information will be delayed until after the next USTA/PNW Board meeting which is scheduled on May 18. After the Board meeting, the USTA/PNW Section will work diligently in making sure all information is provided as quickly as possible to our players and facilities. We appreciate your patience as we conduct this review of our USTA League program.

USTA/PNW Teams Win Super Senior and Senior Mixed National Titles The 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 teams from the Pacific Northwest competed in the 2012 USTA Super Senior National Championships in Surprise, Ariz., on various weekends last month. The 8.0 Men’s team from The Irvington Club in Portland fought off a tough Missouri Valley team to win the national championship! Below is a brief recap of the other Super Senior divisions: 6.0 Women: Yakima Tennis Club defeated Texas to secure 3

rd place in the nation. 6.0 Men: As a Wild-

VTC was able to get one win in pool play. 9.0 Women: A USTA/PNW Independent team captained by Mary Kurz lost in the semifinals but de-feated Texas to finish in 3

The 7.0 Senior Mixed team from Sammamish Club (Issaquah, Wash.) brought home a championship by defeating Northern California 2-1 in the final! Here are results for the other USTA/PNW teams: 6.0 Sr. Mixed: Bellevue (Wash.) Club took 2

Tennis Afterschool Zone is a Smash in School Gyms This Spring

The USTA/PNW Tennis Afterschool Zone (TAZ) is now a reality for ten schools in six school districts in three Pacific Northwest states. An estimated 150 kids will gain the benefits of playing tennis in a fun environment this May and June. Thank you as well to the 40 tennis enthusiasts who have applied to be in-structors and are helping us to introduce tennis to kids in their communities. If you have contacts at your local schools and want to start the program in your community this fall, let us know. Our list of schools wanting to run TAZ is growing daily. We’re also still recruiting for more of the very best TAZ instruc-tors who are vital in our partnering with school districts. Out-standing individuals who enjoy working with kids are encour-aged to apply at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/TAZapp2013 or email [email protected] with any questions.

Get in on the Fun: Play USTA Jr. Team Tennis This Summer
