AHHHHHRTOBER. Fall is !nally in the air and the relaxing, cool-ing breeze that echoes through Chico is asserting its calming e"ect over the citizens of our town, heavily-tanned from the relentless summer sun. Its no surprise that art is so prevalent at this time of year, as it exists all around us. #e Esplanade is starting to change her colors, painting Chico’s longest thoroughfare in reds, yellows, oranges and browns so beautiful that any artist would be humbled by its magni!cence. Artoberfest has arrived, bringing with it a renewed breath of interest in the local art scene; provid-ing artists both local and from afar the ability to in$uence our town with their creativity, emotion and message. Finally, less important in the grand scheme of goings-on this month, but indescribably exciting to us: our !rst Artober issue, which you currently hold in your hands. #is issue is packed with some of the best in art that our town has to o"er. From visual art to restored furniture; from artistry in food to $awless car restorations, we’ve seen some pretty amazing sights this month, and we’re excited to share the experience with you. It wasn’t easy either, this month we learned how to create non-toxic, eye-safe paint for our cover shoot, endangered our lives by holding potentially the cutest lion cub to ever grace this earth in our own hands, ate at some of Chico’s best restau-rants and had our egos collapsed by the sheer talent of the artists displayed herein. We did all of that for you. ;) So get out, go downtown, grab a copy of the Artoberfest publication available all over town and revel in the fact that Chico has one of the best art scenes around. Support your local artisans by visiting their shows, taking a day in at a gallery and buying what you can a"ord, because their art supports the beauty of this community, and that’s something we all bene!t from. We hope you all enjoy experiencing this issue as much as we did creating it. We’re proud of it and think it’s our best one yet; we think you’ll agree.

the

With interior design pro, Melissa Snow

We were honored to receive an invite to the Wondrous Women’s conference that took place at Sierra Nevada’s Big Room on Friday, September 23rd. Founded by Amy Lance (left), Wondrous Women Worldwide seeks to empower women to be every-thing they want to be. Wondrous women from all over northern California were joined by local marvelous men for an experience that engaged everyone, encour-aged networking and helped each answer some of the most nagging questions about the opposite sex. We’d like to extend a big con-gratulations on a wonderful !rst event of what will undoubtedly be a wondrous annual series!

Dear Melissa,Do you have any suggestions for caring for

my real wood furniture?- THANKS, NICOLETTE

Dear Nicolette, solid hardwood furniture is authentic and durable. Its oneofakind

beauty can last a lifetime and beyond to become tomorrow’s heirloom if properly taken

care of. Maintaing your wood furniture is extremely important especially in the North

State with such hot summers and cool winters. You should always read the manufacturer’s care directions carefully, since finishes can

vary widely.

CLEANING - When cleaning, you should try to dust weekly so nothing builds up on the surface with a clean, slightly damp cloth. Avoid silicone sprays, which can break down the !nish. Dust is pretty abrasive to wood, which means you need to be careful in the method that you dust. Consider cleaning with a mild non-alkaline soap and water. Use the suds on a damp sponge or cloth, but be sure to pretest the solution on an out -of -site section to make sure it doesn’t damage the !nish. Dry immediately with a soft cloth and bu" lightly, follow the grain. Don’t use too much water while you’re dusting because if it pools or stains it will be di#cult to get rid of those stains. TREATMENT - After you are !nished dusting, I would suggest employing a product made particularly for the treatment of wood; I personally use Briwax, which you can !nd at Collier’s Hardware downtown. $e Briwax product comes in several stain choices, from clear to espresso, which really protects the original quality of the wood but also restores that like-new look. Apply the Briwax as directed at least annually; fall is actually the perfect time to maintain your furniture. With proper care, your hardwood furniture can provide years and years of enjoyment for your family. It requires a little maintenance and a little extra care and attention but it will last several generations in your home.

ounds simple enough right? But how many of us are really prepared? If you are one of the unfortunate 12% unemployed in Califor-

nia today and you weren’t prepared before the downturn, your number one priority moving forward is most likely to Be Prepared for next time. Because like it or not, there will be a next time. So what does Be Prepared mean !-nancially? It means having an emer-gency fund. Typically a money mar-ket account that has enough money to cover your living expenses for 4-6 months. The account should be set up preferably away from your bank so you cannot easily touch or trans-fer out of it. For example, if your monthly living expenses are $3000, your goal would be to grow your ac-count towards $12,000 - $18,000. To new investors, that amount probably seems impossible, but it is easier than you think. Consider automatically transferring $50 per month or 1% of your take home pay to your money market account. As you get used to putting those dollars away, start increasing the amount. Every three months try adding an additional $5 or 1%. You will be amazed at how easy it be-comes to save and how fun it is to watch your balance grow. Once you

reach your goal…you will be used to saving and can start putting that money away to-wards your dreams…retirement, a vacation home, a boat, travel, etc… The best “Be Prepared” advice I ever re-ceived from my mom… ”Don’t put o" ‘til to-morrow what you can do today.”

he only thing better than attending a fabu-lous party, is hosting one. Being inspired by Chico’s art of dining event in October and with the holidays just around the corner, here are a few easy tips for setting a stun-ning table and creating an inviting space for guests. ThemeCreating a theme is the easiest way to get started on hosting an event or party. Whether it’s a simple get together with your

closest friends or a lavish a"air, your theme can focus your decorat-ing direction and help you with decision making. Magazines, as well as the internet, are your best bet for this part of the process. Visit your favorite local book store or simply type in “party themes” in Google images and you’re o"; so many great ideas are ready to be discovered. Be inspired by an image or two that you love and let the creativity begin. StyleDeciding on whether your party will be casual or formal really sets the tone for how to decorate and what to serve. Table-ScapingOnce the decisions have been made for your theme and style, the real fun begins. With your inspiration image in hand, !rst check

your own secret hiding spots for any candle holders, vases or run-ners. Make note of what you still might need and o" you go. RunnersWhen choosing the perfect runner or table cloth, consider stopping by your favorite local fabric store. Visit Carmen at Honey Run Quilters, she has the most unique fabrics in town and also has some simple table runner kits available. FlowersWhen choosing your arrangement be open to mixing both %owers as well as seasonal fruit or veggies. Make sure your arrangements are not too over the top and it is comfortable for people to engage in conversation across the table without them feeling the need to move items. My go-to girl for any %oral need is Melinda at M Creations. Talk about creative! Melinda will bring your vision to life - take your inspiration picture into the shop or simply explain your vision, she will make it happen!! CandlesEveryone loves a candle-lit evening, just please make sure all candles are unscented. One of my favorite tricks is to stick your candles in the freezer for a couple of days prior to using them. $e freezing will eliminate most of the messy dripped wax on your furniture or fantastic new runner.China vs PaperIn my opinion you should never use paper. Don’t set the table with a single pattern of china, mix it up and be creative. However, if you do mix and match your plates, do keep the glassware and %atware consistent, it makes for a more cohesive look. Don’t be afraid to use your !nest china, silverware and crystal pieces outdoors. It can make a casual event a bit more special. Another fun tip is to serve your basic potato chip or cashews in crystal bowl. A right out of the bag snack becomes sophisticated when they’re served in a gor-geous dish.Name Tags and MenusOnce again this will depend on the style of the party but if it is a more formal sit down, create name tags. It makes things so much easier for the guests. Writing the names on both sides of the tag really make it easy for guests sitting across from one another. Also, print out a menu card-it takes only seconds and always looks fabu-lous sitting on the plate for your guests to ooh and aww over.Music Now that the décor and food is taken care of, music is an important aspect that most people seem to forget about. Create a playlist that is ready to begin as soon as the doorbell rings and doesn’t end until the last guest departs. If you don’t have time to create your own, utilize Pandora.com; it takes seconds to get started and really does all of the work for you. Remember, don’t take yourself too seriously. Anything goes these days with your table décor and menu, so have fun and let the party begin!!

hat started o" as a means to connect with old friends has now blossomed into a local phenomenon. Created by Jim Secola in Janu-ary 2010, the Facebook Group “You Know You’re

From Chico When...” started with the post, “... you still call it the new mall and it’s 25 years old” and has exploded into a group of over 3,000 Chico natives and residents both in-town and abroad who share old memories, antique photos, and what is turning into a Wikipedia-style accounting of Chico’s historical record. Between the historical debating of Chapman vs Bidwell and the nostalgic photos dating back to the

early 1900s, this Facebook group has provided some-thing for everyone and continues to attract new members each and every day. To provide a place for everyone to reunite, Jim Secola, Michael Cli"ord Hicks, Layne Diestel and a num-ber of other Chicoans planned a barbecue to take place at one mile in lower Bidwell Park. As Jim put it, “Just like any other day in Chico, someone said let’s have a party and it got out of hand.” $e number of RSVPs quickly overran the city’s limita-tions set for lower park and the party had to be relocated to the city plaza. In the same fashion as the Facebook group itself, the quaint barbecue has now evolved into

a full-%edged downtown event with food, vendors and local musicians. $ere’s even rumor that a certain Chicopcake (see the cover of our September issue) by Cupcake Crusader may make its !rst public appear-ance for all locals to revel in. $e Chico reunion will start on October 22nd at noon and end at 5pm... ...ish (if it holds to standard Chico party practices).

Born in Chico and raised in the local music scene, hip hop artist Aye Jay found his artistic passion cultivated in the Chico High School art program. Mentored by his high school art teacher, Aye Jay quickly diversi!ed into di"erent artistic genres, including acting at the Chico Blue Room Theater under the direction of his art teacher’s son. It was here that he found his !rst major foray into the style of art that he has become nationally recognized for. Rendering publicity artwork for touring bands large and small, Aye Jay quickly made a name for himself both at home and abroad. Over the past 17 years, his artwork has traveled the globe and has a"orded him collaborations with some of the most sought after artists of our time. A self-proclaimed artist without a stylistic home, Aye Jay continues to push the envelope by juxtaposing sensibility with hardcore strokes, likening his art to prominent pop artists like Keith Haring, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichten-stein. In#uenced by artists R. Crumb and Jack Kirby, some of his recent work can be found on display and for sale locally at Art Etc. in downtown Chico.

An artist born from her mother’s feigned interest in, and eventual aban-donment of, a “painting-for-pleasure” class, Amelia LaMar reclaimed her mother’s soon-to-be discarded acrylic treasure trove at the age of eighteen and hasn’t stopped painting since. In#uenced by the music which speaks to her and the nature that surrounds her, Amelia’s art serves as a historical account of di"erent moments in her life. Expressionist, abstract and undeniably bold, her pieces are compiled layer-after-layer, each providing a deeper understanding of the moment than the one after it. Well-known and recognized throughout the Chico area, Amelia’s artwork claims residency and can be viewed at Broadway Heights California Cuisine in downtown Chico’s Phoenix Building. Visitors may !nd her in the mo-ment at her home studio on Mondays between 12 - 4pm, at 1174 1/2 Palm Ave.

Naturally drawn to art from a young age, Tarray Jackson moved to Chico from Savannah La Mar, Jamaica in 2004. A gradu-ate of Chico High School, Tarray experienced his !rst major push into the art scene somewhat suddenly in January 2011. Struck with inspiration from the prior Halloween spent with friends as cos-tumed Dia De Los Maria characters, he decided to revisit his childhood penchant for art and delve into paintings that celebrated the Day of the Dead. In nine short months, his !rst Day of the Dead drawing, completed freehand with pen and markers, has given way to a series of pieces focusing on fashionista-styled Dia De Los Muertos charac-ters titled “Dressed to Kill”. By utilizing di"erent artis-tic mediums he has been able to give each work a fresh face that stands wholly separate from the other pieces in the series. The image to the right, titled “La Santa Muerte”, is one such work. Created freehand without a paint-brush, Tarray committed fabric paint directly to canvas using nothing but the tube the fabric paint came in. In the coming months, Tarray is looking forward to expanding his art into clothing design, with the hopes of producing shirts and shoes that bear the image of his caricatures.

Self taught and well-versed in the art community, most would see David Simcox’s transition from co-owner of Art Etc., one of the larg-est art galleries in Chico, to artist as a next logical step. Located in downtown Chico, Art Etc. has nurtured the creativity of artists like David for thirty-seven years, featuring twenty-!ve or more local artists at any given time. Originally a professor of natural resources at Chico State, an opportunity arose that allowed David to work from home for three years; it was here that he found his calling as an artist. What began as a haphaz-ard splashing of paint on paper quickly turned into much more as David found himself reconnecting with nature through his art in a way he hadn’t before. He quickly moved through water colors and settled on hand-carved linoleum block printing, creating custom stamps whose negative space was !lled in with color once pressed on paper. As with any wise art-ist though, his art has continued to develop as he explores new mediums. Most recently, David has incorporated ceramic tile art into his repertoire. Pressed and glazed, these pieces present art in the opposite way of his origi-nal linoleum block prints, creating a three-dimen-sional surface that remains as the focus of the piece. David’s work is a con-stant evolution. It can be seen in the Art Etc. build-ing, located at 122 W. 3rd Street in downtown Chico.

THE ART OF RESTORATIONConcours Elite something something subhead

2011

t isn’t often that I write in the !rst person, nor is it often that I feel compelled to write my own personal testimonial for a com-

pany within a business pro!le in my own magazine. However, when such a time does present itself, I tend to think of it as special and approach the matter as such. Growing up I was taught to, “say what I mean and mean what I say.” $roughout the years I’ve been pre-sented with many di"erent tag lines through advertising, however, I have never felt one was as true to what it said as Concours Elite’s “Quality with a personal touch”. Unlucky enough while driving, I was lucky enough to have been introduced to Bob Fitzgerald years ago after an accident with a drunk

driver that had left me consider-ably injured and reeling from the amount of paperwork I had to deal with. Considering that I was already swamped, I asked Bob for the easi-est route in handling the accident repair claim process. His response was to take my hands o" the wheel (pun intended) and let them handle it. As someone who doesn’t often relinquish control, I reluctantly did and soon found that everything had been taken care of without any involvement on my part. $e car looked brand new and I couldn’t have been more relieved to have one less thing on my plate. Over the years I have come to know Bob and his sta" even better. I’ve spent plenty of time in their shop and haven’t been given

a reason to even think to look anywhere else. Not only have I been amazed by the work they’ve done for me, but have come to realize the art in the work they do for oth-ers. Restoring a car takes extreme patience, knowledge and intimate skill. Returning something to a state of beauty from utter chaos is not an easy task, but the sta" at Concours Elite makes it look so e"ortless, you would think otherwise. Whether you’ve been in a wreck and your car needs repair, you’re looking to restore a car to its once pristine beauty or you’d just love to see some amazing work done on classic cars, make sure you stop by Concours Elite. You won’t !nd a better team in town, and you can take my word for it.

ynonymous with the word “res-toration”, Royce Peterson has had wood in his blood longer than he can remember. A graduate

of CSU Chico, Royce found his skill in wood restoration while working for Ruhnke Piano Company, here in Chico. After a stint in the !shing and hot-air balloon industries on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, Royce returned to Chico, !nally accepting the inevitability of listening to his inner voice and opening Restoration Co., which is currently going on thirteen years in business. Concerned for sustainability, both within his own life and within the world around him, Royce began reclaiming the discarded and restoring it. One of his !rst major projects, an addition to his own home, reclaimed a considerable amount of wood from a local barn tear-down and garnered national attention on the cover of Bungalow Style, a book by author April Halbertstadt. Since then, the tearing down of older, unused barns and buildings has become second nature for Royce. $ough it may take anywhere from a month to one full year to tear down an entire structure plank-by-plank, doing so nets his company between 2,000 and 10,000 square feet of usable wood, which is then used to beautify, restore, remodel and create furniture and spaces that, when completed, look

absolutely exquisite. Perhaps most important, each and every piece created at Restoration Co. is unique. Whether it be a dining room table, dresser, retail display, sculpture or otherwise, you’ll never !nd a replica %oating around town or anywhere else for that matter. Best of all, the cost involved with having a unique piece created is as a"ordable, and often even more a"ordable, than buying a replicated piece created in a factory overseas. All wood is reclaimed and recycled from buildings within 30 miles of Chico, and all work is completed at Royce’s shop right here in town. Royce’s work can be seen in homes and businesses across northern Califor-nia, recently having completed projects and commissions for such notable !gures as Lundberg Family Farms, the Gate-way Science Museum, Chico State, the Associated Students at CSUC and Dr. Stephen and Lorraine Landaker. A num-ber of his pieces can be found at Dolce Home in Chico and his shop located at 2139 Esplanade. Whether you’re looking to restore old furniture, create something new or experience some of the best in local sus-tainability using wood, metal and stone, Restoration Co. is there to satisfy. Stop by today and prepare to be impressed.

id you know that Chico has a zoo? A drive down Durham/Pentz Road, past the Butte College campus, will lead to the Barry R. Kirshner Wildlife Sanctuary that shelters ninety-two wild animals including birds,

reptiles, and forty-four felines. If you have been longing to visit some majestic creatures without leaving Butte County, this would be a perfect place to do so. $e Barry R. Kirshner Wildlife Foun-dation is led by an all-volunteer sta" and focuses on the good stewardship of some very special animals incapable of surviving on their own. Known as the “last stop” for animals, eighty-!ve percent are classi!ed as special needs with health conditions such as liver trouble, kidney problems, and injury by car. Except for surgery, all needs are met on site. Such care requires the involvement

of Butte County, the Fish & Game Depart-ment, and local hunters to provide over 720 pounds of food each day. With all of this e"ort comes the opportu-nity for you to visit the Sanctuary with your school, family, or group of friends and learn about the world around you. “Animals can change lives,” said Roberta Kirshner. “Just seeing them… It awakens people and opens doors to understanding what’s global and local for these animals.” Human visitors to the site can upgrade their knowledge about responsibility of ownership, respect for the wild nature of wildlife, and the encouragement of health and contentment in animals. Accommoda-tions include nine language options (includ-ing ASL) and eight levels of education about animals, as well as an admission discount for those who are disabled. Special participa-tion in programs such as the Make-a-Wish Foundation and Ronald McDonald House

Charities tie the animals to the community. Recent publicity of the Kirshner Sanctuary includes some television appearances on shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live, Access Hollywood, $e Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Chelsea Lately, and Inside Hollywood as well as National Geographic, Animal Planet, and Disney. Currently, the Menagerie Art Show at the Chico Art School & Gallery is raising funds to care for the animals. $e artwork is animal-themed, created by both adults and children, and is on display until October 30th. An ongoing silent auction will end with a reception on October 22nd. Future plans at the Barry R. Kirshner Wildlife Sanctuary include constructing a visitor’s center and organizing a day camp on-site. Bidwell Artby Emily Spesert

COMMUNITY

ohn Bidwell drove west in the !rst wagon train to California without an idea what to expect but ended up successfully establishing farm lands in the North and Central Valleys, acting as prison warden and business manager at Sutter’s Fort, seeing the Gold Rush begin, and establishing

what is now Chico (including Chico State). He was a California State Senator when it was accepted for state-hood. He advocated for Chinese, Maidu and other na-tive peoples’ rights. He was 2nd Lieutenant and (later) Brigadier General in the State Militia. Despite his value to state history, Bidwell Mansion will be o#cially closed by April 30, 2012. Recent fund-ing cuts have revealed the Mansion as having less “State-wide Signi!cance,” fewer visitors, less revenue, and fewer operational partnerships than some other parks. $e $200,000 being spent to maintain it this !scal year will not be allocated next year. $e impact of closure is dire. Bidwell Mansion is piv-otal to the history of Chico and its local residents. With-out Mr. Bidwell, many of our ancestors would have never lived in Chico. Tourists today often make the Mansion their !rst stop because learning about a town typically begins with meeting the founder, and then sightseeing and shopping downtown. Traditionally, Bidwell Mansion has been a third-grade !eld trip. Amber Drake, the Mansion’s Guide Supervi-sor and only full-time state employee, will tell you about beautiful experiences of watching history come to life for the kids. Indubitably, the moment in the tour when epiphanies strike is at Annie Bidwell’s dress. “$ere’s just something about that spot that is a vortex of knowledge,” said Drake. “It makes one kid in every group exclaim, ‘History is fun!’” $e tour dispels some very real misconceptions kids have, from photography to electricity. Upon seeing the

legendary painting of Mr. Bidwell in the entrance hall, many a child has won-dered how they got all that color in a painting when the world had no color be-fore color television was invented. And what did people do with their computers and iPods before electricity? $ey just sat on the desk, useless. Right? A tour of the Mansion will tell you the truth. In the meantime, on October 14, Avenue 9 Gallery is hosting a “Save the Mansion” bene!t drawing to bene!t educational programs at Bidwell Mansion. Additionally, the Bidwell Mansion Association (BMA) has an ongoing postcard campaign to aid citizens in sending appeals to state legislators for the prevention of Mansion obscurity. $e BMA will make appearances at the Chico Commu-nity Reunion Celebration (Oct. 22) and at Farm City Celebrations Harvest Fes-tival (Nov. 5) so that more people in the community can get involved in saving the Mansion. $is is your chance.

ounded by Eleanor Palm in 1968, Chico Paper Company has literally stood as a cor-

nerstone of downtown Chico art at 345 Broadway Street since 1981. Housing the works of over 20 local artists with original art pieces from each and many others from outside artists, Chico Paper Company has made a name for itself both locally and abroad as a must-visit for !ne art. Likewise, it has provided much needed exposure for a number of local artists who were lucky enough to collaborate with them. Possibly the most no-table of these artists, Jake Early, began his collaboration with Chico Paper Company nearly eight years ago with the !rst of

his landmark series. Eight years later, Early and Chico Paper Company have completed over seventy-!ve pieces together; the most current of which will be his new bridges and creeks piece, set to release on October 7th as the second installment of his Chico Experience series. Open seven days a week, Chico Paper Company has become a downtown hot-spot for buyers and browsers alike. Whether you’re looking to purchase, frame or commission artwork, Chico Paper Com-pany has someone on hand to make sure your experience is everything you expect it to be and more. Stop by during Artoberfest for great deals on works from all of your favorite artists.

here’s something to be said for Americana music; it evokes a certain unavoidable nostalgia in

each of us, hearkening a time when we !rst began to review and incorporate our surroundings into part of our personal-ity’s repertoire. Bridging the artistic gap between music and canvas is no easy feat, so it is no surprise that we do not take a seamless bridging of said gap lightly. Singer/songwriter Jackie Greene has done

just that. Dubbed by many as the “Prince of Americana” and openly touted as the second coming of Bob Dylan, Jackie has proved, with his recent foray into visual arts, that he can pull the same feelings of nostalgia from his audience visually as he could auditorily. Jackie will grace Chico with a two day music event at the El Rey $eater in downtown Chico on October 29th and 30th. Perhaps more notably, though,

he has selected Chico as one of the !rst locations to display his newfound visual artistry. A pre-concert artist reception will be held on October 29th from 4:00 - 5:00pm at Chico Paper Company where he will unveil ten or more of his newest pieces. Opportunities to experience so many facets of an artist’s skillset are few and far between. We hope you’ll join us and experience it together!

Cafe Coda

afé Coda was kind enough to honor us with a sampling of three of their house favorites for the October issue: the Coda Bene-dict, Cranberry-Orange French Toast, and the %avor-packed Chilaquiles. $e tastes were awe-

inspiring and we came away from the experi-ence fully aware that this restaurant has set the bar rather high in the art of plating. $e Coda Benedict is nothing short of culinary genius. A slice of fresh, parmesan-crusted foccacia bread, reminiscent of a perfectly seasoned (but only lightly baked) crouton, is topped with green, garden-fresh spinach, savory ham, and the most succulent egg your mouth has ever been blessed to en-joy. To top-it-o", this mouth-pleasing won-der is perfectly blanketed by a %avorful bé-arnaise sauce wrapping. As if these euphoric combinations weren’t enough, the “Coda Benedict” is impeccably paired with a side of green onion, cilantro, basil, and parmesan seasoned potatoes Perhaps you wake up feeling the need to ‘spice up your life’. Well, Coda has you cov-ered with one simple word: “Chilaquiles”. Grab a fork and dig into this seamless com-bination of fresh scrambled eggs, jack cheese, tortilla chips and chorizo. $is ‘egg-cellent’ wonder is paired with potatoes, black beans, and a morning kick-start of spicy red chili sauce. $e dish is completed with a topping of salsa, cilantro, avocado, and cotija cheese.

Falling leaves, crisp breeze and gentle rain are beginning to usher in the fall. What better way to celebrate the season than with the deli-cious %avors of Café Coda’s palate-warming Cranber-ry Orange French Toast? $is delicious secret menu version of Coda’s original French toast is made with delicious butter-milk bread dipped in a cinnamon-infused or-ange French toast batter, grilled, and then topped with %avor-popping dried cranberries. $is dish is com-pleted with a light sprinkling of powdered sugar and a red berry drizzle. One bite and you’ll forget about all the other cranberry infu-sions out there; this is the real deal. Café Coda’s menu is exploding with %a-vor and variety. Make sure you arrive hungry because the portions are easily big enough to share; though they’re so good… you prob-ably won’t want to.

HOW TO CHOOSE A HOME WARRANTY PLAN

BY ANGIE MOHR CA CMA

ome warranty plans are be-coming increas-ingly popular in North America. $e purpose of a home warranty plan is to insure

the homeowner against costs related to the breakdown of certain appliances or home systems. Navigating through the myriad of plans available can be a daunt-ing process but following these steps can help you decide if you should purchase one and, if so, which one.

STEP 1: Determine if you would bene!t from a home warranty plan. In a note-book, tour your home and make a note of all of your appliances and major systems (such as heating, air conditioning, water heater, etc.). List the make and model, the approximate age and any recent repairs or upgrades.

STEP 2: Review your risk of !nancial loss. Beside every entry in your notebook, write down the approximate useful life of the appliance or system. $ere are many websites on the web that have this infor-mation. Search for “appliance useful life” in any popular search engine. Subtract the age of the appliance or system from the useful life to get the approximate re-maining useful life of each appliance or system. For example, if your refrigerator is 12 years old and its estimated useful life is 14 years, then the approximate remain-ing useful life is 2 years. In other words, you could expect to have to replace it 2 years from now. Starting with the appli-ance or system that has the smallest re-

maining useful life, note the approximate cost of major repair or replacement. $is will give you a sense of how much money you should expect to have to pay out in repairs or replacements over time. If this amount is more than the annual premium of a home warranty that covers those ap-pliances or systems, then it will be money well spent to purchase the protection.

STEP 3: Choose a plan that’s right for you. Home warranty plans di"er from company to company and policy to poli-cy. Read the !ne print for each policy that you are considering. Understand which appliance and home systems are covered. Know how much each service call will cost you out of pocket. Find out what the restrictions are on payments from the pol-icy. For example, if your policy covers all damage to your water heater except that caused by rodents, it may not help you if you know that you have mice in your basement. If your roof already leaks, there

may be restrictions on certain policies that state that the leak must be new and not a pre-existing condition.

STEP 4: Compare policy premiums. Once you have decided what’s important to you in the way of home warranty cov-erages, compare the annual premiums for those policies that have the coverages that you need. As a tiebreaker for those policies that are comparable, telephone the com-panies’ customer service lines to make sure that you can speak with a real live person without a great deal of e"ort. Companies that are di#cult to get a hold of now will be even more so when it’s time to make a claim on your home warranty. Only deal with companies that have above-average customer service.

Home warranties can be confusing but with a little planning and investigation, you will be able to !nd the one that’s right for you.

No doubt you’ve heard the news: the housing market hit a rough patch this summer. Sales of existing homes declined at a rate that took many by surprise, sending pundits into a “what’s next” tailspin. As the prognosticators pondered, savvy buyers didn’t miss a beat. $ey got it that the doomsayers were taking a one-dimensional view of the buyer’s market and that market skittishness gives rise to an even more favorable climate for buying a home. Recent history has reframed some of what had long been taken for granted about buying a home. Namely, we’ve learned that even though buying a home remains one of the best and safest investments available, a home should not func-tion as an ATM or a short-term spec-ulation strategy. So, where does that leave us? A lot smarter, able to recognize an oppor-tunity when we see one, and aware of the facts that point to “now” as the prime time to buy a home.

This is just a quick excerpt from our new 10-page report “7 Reasons Why Now is a Great Time to Buy a Home!” Want a copy? Shoot a quick email to [email protected] or call 530.809.3792 and let us know where to send it. Happy home hunting!

Everyone keeps saying that don’t they? Seems like they’ve been saying it for awhile! Ever won-dered exactly what ‘they’ mean, where ‘they’ get their information and what it’s based on? Well, here’s a little taste of a new KW report that really sheds some light on the subject!

HOME AFFORDABILITY IS AT AN ALL!TIME HIGH. $e median mortgage payment on the median priced home as a percentage of the median household income is lower than it’s been in a generation.MORTGAGE RATES ARE AT ROCK BOTTOM. It’s hard to imagine interest rates going much lower, and when they start to inch back upwards, monthly payments and total loan costs will spike upwards.HOME PRICES ARE BACK ON THE RISE. After declining for 30 months, home prices in most markets are trending back upward. $e time get in to the market is NOW!SELLERS ARE MOTIVATED. $is means that buyers have the upper hand!
