Sustainabilityby Alexa Benson-Valavanis

Sustainabilitystarts here

I’ve spent the past couple weeks asking friends and colleagues what word came to mind when they heard - “sustainability”. Unsurprisingly, the responses were as diverse as the individuals offering them. Ecology. Business. Resources. Green. Responsibility. Economy. So on and so forth. Certainly, resting closely beside each of those words was a case for how sustain-ability applied. In the world of ecology, for example, sustainability describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time - a necessity for survival. When in reference to the environment or business the term often describes practices tied to responsibility, stewardship and viability. Today, even the evening news reveals clips of politicians totting the word, sustainability, alongside their promises for the future. I think it’s fair to say, whether scholars like it or not, the word conjures up an array of meanings and inferences. For fun, I thought we’d look at the word itself a bit closer. As it turns out the actual word sustainability is derived from the Latin word sustinere which means to hold up (tenere, to hold; sus, up). To hold up. To last. To endure. Yes, but the individual words suggest a little more, don’t they? When we hold some-thing we tend to care for and protect it. When we lift something up it is more often than not something we honor and respect. When seeking sustainability whether in our business, shopping habits, friend-ships or even practices for our bodies and minds, it seems cultivating an attitude of care and respect might lead to the health and longevity we’ve been after all along.

With their grand opening fast approaching, the folks at Chico’s Ameri-can Cancer Society Discovery Shop are hard at work moving into their new space located at 982 East Avenue, just down the street from Trader Joe’s. Led by friend of the magazine and contrib-utor of the wonderful Feather Falls photo in our last issue, Rachel Stokes, this group is destined to do wonders raising funds for cancer research. We stopped by their new shop the other week, and even though they have yet to have their official grand opening, the store looks absolutely won-derful. Even so, the store could still use quality donations that will help them meet their goals, so please head down and donate what you can. Your donations help save lives and contribute to finding a cure for one of the most rampant dis-eases on our planet. The store is currently open to the general public; stop by and get the skinny on their upcoming grand opening celebration. We’ll look forward to seeing you there!

Heating & Aire Royalty by Aveed Khakiphotograph by Michelle Camy

You maY not knoW it, but there’s likely a one-in-four chance that you have Royal Hawkley to thank for staying cool this summer. Born and raised in Chico, Royal joined Artic Aire and All Seasons Air in 1974 and began what would be a lifetime of ex-pertise in the heating and air industry. In 1985 he took over as one of the company’s owner and twelve years later, when the util-ity companies threw in their bid to service heating and AC units, Royal sold the company to an industry consolidator. Asked to remain onboard due to his unparalleled success in the area, Royal led the company until 2011 and decided to retire after 37 years in the business. Realizing the industry had become a part of his day-to-day life and missing the opportunity to educate and provide exquisite customer service in an arena that often lacks it, Royal decided to return after less than a year away. On May 1st, 2012, Royal opened his own company, Royal Aire Heating & Air Condition-

ing with friends Bob Brown and Jesse Robles. Determined to always be available, day-or-night and rain-or-shine, the partners committed to adopting a policy that guaranteed one of the three would be available to field incoming customer phone calls twen-ty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Based on the response so far, the commitment seems to have been one that customers were looking for. The heating & AC repair industry is often an unsung hero. Mechanics are hailed for fixing cars and plumbers for fixing leaks, but it isn’t often that you hear about your favorite heating and air conditioning expert. The truth of the matter, from a sustain-ability standpoint, is that most of us are wasting an inordinate amount of energy each and every time we turn on our heating and cooling system. In fact, the most recent survey placed 53% of household HVAC systems as wasting 20% to 40% of the en-ergy they use due to old duct tape around air ducts alone. When you do the math with your PG&E bill at the end of the month, you’ll find that the expense quickly adds up. A simple servicing plus duct inspection costs just $79, can double the life of your heating & AC unit, and can potentially save you hundreds in your PG&E bill each year. Adding this service to your annual to-do list is a must for those looking to live as sustainably as pos-sible, both from an eco-friendly standpoint as well as a monetary one. Royal Aire Heating & Air Conditioning employs five local service techs, each with 10+ years of experience for a total of over 150 years combined experience between the eleven members of the team. They are actively involved with Rotary, the Boy Scouts of America, and prove through their philanthropy that they are heavily invested in sharing the wealth with the community. When it comes to increasing your sustainability, there are few things as quick and easy as a visit from the team at Royal Aire.

Lavender fieLds have a beautY like nothing else. The un-dulating blossoms gently beckon you to walk through the bushes, over pebbled walkways and carved dirt rivets. A slight wind can make the flattest land appear to have rolling hills as the blossoms lean to and fro under the bright sun. The vi-brant gradation of that particularly pur-plish blue is so infrequently bestowed upon other blossoms in nature that the common name for the plant’s scientific genus, Lavandula, is synonymous with its color. That eponymous relationship is of-ten linked to France in the daydream-ing minds of many. Those who love the scenery in a certain Hollywood classic featuring a blonde heiress who picnics with a jewel thief, or the multi-million dollar estate complete with succulent vineyard featured in a more recent film, are familiar with the longing and nos-talgia that accompanies thoughts of all things quintessentially French. Such is the case with local business-woman, Donna Bayliss. After vaca-tioning in the South of France, her daydreams were forever changed and a dream lodged in Donna’s heart, a vision of essential oils, fragrant fields of flowers, and beautiful landscaping at home where her husband was born, a ranch estab-lished in 1865. An admiration for pure botanicals and organic farming took on a new determination in her soul. It was only a daydream for many years, but after her husband passed on, the ranch needed new life and Donna did too, so she turned to the next most meaningful thing she had left besides her son: the vision within her heart. “We’ve done our best to survive,” says Donna. “It’s been hard work!” The japonica rice

crops that the family had grown for years were not earning enough income to keep the ranch operational, so botanicals were planted and essential oils were first ex-tracted in 1990. Twenty-two years later, the excitement and anticipation of walking through her fields is still fresh for Donna Bayliss. During a recent tour of the property, she kept two young women, a journal-ist and a photographer, chasing after her as she energetically named plant variet-ies, broke off samples to pass around for a sniff-test, and pointed out areas with pleasant compositions and proper light-ing despite the midday sunshine. The property as a whole is a blend of old and new, residential and commercial, California and Provence. In the 1920s, the original farmhouse was relocated from its foundation near the highway to its current location next to the main entrance. In the 1960s, Donna and her husband moved in. The newer main house features neutral colors, elegant styl-ing, and a landscaped yard reminiscent of Coco Chanel’s “La Pausa” on the Riviera. Paved walkways, well-manicured shrubs, and a simple pool make the yard com-plete with cast-iron patio furniture and dried botanical displays. One of the old-est orange trees in California has a place of honor near the old pump house. Outside of the landscaped garden lay the botanical fields, parking lot, and pro-cessing building. The original rice silos are no longer in use, but they stand tall to remind visitors of the farming origins of Bayliss Ranch and quite strongly resem-ble the light-tower in Cannes. The prop-erty whispers with stories of history - of generations of laborers, years of dreams, and pioneers of California. There is so much landscape and architecture to ex-perience that Bayliss Ranch almost feels like a small village in itself, complete with a boutique filled with Lavender Ranch™ skincare products and displays stating exactly how many blossoms of ex-tract go into each bottle. “Please visit us at the store and share your thoughts on Facebook,” invites Donna Bayliss. “We love hearing from you and we would really like to know if you are interested in classes to learn more

about our botanicals and natural prod-ucts for healthy skin and body.” This dreamy business began as what Bayliss likes to call a “boutique sam-pling.” She started small, struggling to succeed for fifteen years with the help of family and friends but soon discov-ered a much more fundamental issue at the root of organic practices: the gen-eral public is not sure what that means for skincare botanicals. More specifi-cally, a skincare product can qualify as “organic” without having any essential oil as an ingredient. “We did this because we wanted people to experience the real powers of Mother Nature, unadulter-ated and real!” she declares. Innovative organic prac-tices have earned awards for Bayliss Ranch from The California Agricultural Club in 2008 and the Cali-fornia Council for Interna-tional Trade in 2011. Today, Bayliss Ranch produces about a dozen botanicals, listed on the Lavender Ranch™ website. Four office staff members and five field workers are regularly employed to help the ranch run smoothly. But, Donna never forgets the tough times when she lost her husband. “What we [women] lack in muscle power, we make up for in staying power!” she proclaims proud-ly. “Adversity helps to do your own checks and balances.” That time of struggling to succeed gives you “time to double-check your intentions and desires. Even after you’re done, you still make mistakes but then you just return to your mission. Our mission here has always been to give the public the example of what real botanicals are like and how they function with you as a person.” That is what makes this Local Legend an inspiration.

regarded as one of the area’s premier sociaL events since 2009, the Concours de la Cha-pelle is right around the corner once again, making its highly anticipated appearance on August 25th this year. All of the proceeds of the event benefit Northern California Ballet. This small, non-profit performing dance company has given hundreds of local children the opportunity to pursue their dreams of dance and has brought the finest of ballet per-formances to our area for the enjoyment and enrichment of our local arts culture. This year, Northern California Ballet says “au revoir” to

two remarkable students who have been selected from a worldwide pool of talented dancers to attend programs in Seattle and Boston. These girls would not have been able to pursue their dreams were it not for the generosity of those who support Northern California Ballet by sponsoring and attending the ballet performances and, of course, the Concours de la Chapelle. Now in its fourth year, the event is seeing some major additions to its already fantastic lineup on the beautiful grounds of Chapelle de L’Artiste in Paradise. The classic European car show features cars from across California alongside legendary models from local collectors and enthusiasts. Four no-host bars are placed throughout the estate, each specializing in its own style of beverage. Master mixologist Tom “Big T” Gagne will be pouring at Martini Island on the main concourse with food by Special Times Catering. Roots Catering will be providing food at “Margaritaville” on the pavilion and the Art Barn will feature Bacio Catering and a champagne bar. An array of musical stylings will be found throughout the event including Holly Taylor, The Bob Aranguren Jazz Trio and dancing under the stars to The Alternators. The most recent addition to the event is the inclusion of visual art. Avenue 9 Gallery will present the “Art-in-the-Barn” art show and sale, featuring work from over 50 local artists including the internationally acclaimed automotive artist, Robert Carter. A silent auction featuring a helicopter tour and a Northern California Ballet dinner & show package among many other wonderful items, and the presen-tation of the People’s Choice Award for the favorite car will bring the evening to a close. Tickets can be purchased online at http://concoursdelachapelle.eventbrite.com and at many local outlets for $65 per person. We’ll be in at-tendance and we look forward to seeing all of you there!!

than the solution. The end result was the re-alization that reusable bags weren’t made to be memorable enough to remember to use them, so he set out to change that. Stopping by Chico’s Thrifty Bargain on the Esplanade, Andy purchased his first sew-ing machine and headed across town to Jo-Ann’s for fabric samples. He began creating prototypes day-and-night, handing them out to friends and family, and asking them for feedback. As the prototypes progressed, they became increasingly strong, washable, easy-to-carry, and most of all memorable. Feedback was becoming considerably more favorable as well, so Andy found a manu-facturer to take on his first production run of polyester bags and the ChicoBag was of-ficially born. On Earth Day, April 22nd, 2005, the first ChicoBag was sold and the operation began to snowball. Word quickly spread through-out town as people began to marvel at the tiny transform-ing pouch seen often at the local farmers’ markets. S&S Produce, Chico Natural Foods and Green Feet became the company’s first customers, selling Andy’s reusable bag in Chico’s most earth-conscious retail marketplaces. The company began to compile a list of cities that were similar to Chico and sys-tematically identified retail en-vironments that were similar to those that had shown suc-cess in Butte County. One-by-one, Andy and his team edu-cated retailers on the dangers and expensive nature of single-use plastic bags as well as the importance of reusable bags as a brand category in their stores. One-by-one the client list grew. Two years passed, and it appeared Andy had touched on something significantly larger than he had originally expected at the Neal Road Landfill. Word was spread-ing and his efforts were quickly paying off. In 2007, San Francisco banned plastic bags at major retailers outright and Oprah stated that the number one way to be green was to use a reusable bag. The understanding was simple, single-use plastic bags are free and

super-lightweight, so they tend to be over-used; recently obtained statistics supported the claim, stating that 102 billion plastic bags were estimated to be used in retail car-ry-out alone each year. Oakland decided to join the Bay Area pioneers by instating a ban of its own, but at this point the plastic bag manufacturers had seen enough. The three largest of these manufacturers sued the city of Oakland to stop the ban, and alongside the entire city of Oakland, decided to make an example out of ChicoBag as well, waging all-out war on the company, citing the Lanham Act and ac-cusing Andy of falsifying his statistics and talking points to promote false advertising. Still a fledgling business, Andy’s ChicoBag

faced total dismantlement, but he soldiered on, and after months of work defending his claims, others began to come to his aid. Ex-perts from around the country signed up, backing Andy’s statistics and claims one-af-ter-another. Two of the companies dropped their lawsuits in lieu of the growing camp backing ChicoBag, and Hilex Poly, the larg-est of the three lawsuits, found themselves agreeing to change their practices during mediation between the two companies. The result was an agreement that helped society

and the environment as well as a printed message on each plastic bag Hilex manufac-tured, reminding shoppers of how to prop-erly dispose of the bags after use. Victorious in what could have easily been a business-ending battle, the team at Chico-Bag returned to focusing on what they do best, education and R&D. Since the end of the lawsuit, the company has continued to grow by leaps and bounds, releasing a number of new products including the Chi-coBag Micro, a keychain tote that carries twenty-five pounds of products and weighs less than one ounce. Made out of the same material as technical camping gear, the item is super lightweight and is quickly being ad-opted as their most unforgettable item. The

company has joined forces with partners like Kleen Kanteen to help make their products unforgettable as well with supplemental products like the Bottle Sling. ChicoBag now employs twenty-eight locals, distributes internationally, and is regarded by experts as one of the most eco-forward reusable bag companies on the planet. Their mission has changed the face of one of our nation’s most wasteful landscapes and for that alone, if nothing else, we are proud to regard them as our rainmaker in sustainability.

A Rockin’ Chairby Royce Peterson & Melissa Snow

Spaces

This month we are chronicling the restoration of an old rocking chair, a classic that still has plenty of style for today’s home. After some restoration work and a quick “facelift,” this chair is now ready for the porch, a good book, and a glass of lemonade. But first, let’s take a look at the steps that made it all possible:

At Restoration Co.

We had to critically look for a candidate chair, specifically, the “bones” had to be solid enough to work with. We healed a few breaks that re-quired the use of a drill press to help with the replacement of broken stretcher ends, a common problem where the pieces between the front and back legs have snapped off. Without the proper tools, this job can be really tough.

The next step was to glue it all together. Good quality wood glue, timing and wood clamps were the required ele-ments here. Be sure to look at the piece from all angles during the gluing process. If you don’t assemble the chair correctly, the balance will be off, and you’ll find yourself in trouble.

Finally, a good amount of sanding removed the rough-ness of the wood and excess glue. Be careful not to sand too hard or you have to sand the rest of the chair to that same degree. The next phase was to send the chair off to Melissa Snow at Dolce Home.

At Dolce Home

With the chair back in working condition, it was time to make this chair “rock” again, with fresh fun paint colors and modern upholstery fabric.

We chose to prime the whole chair with a nice tone of grey paint. Over the top of our primer, we used a warm brown to give it that well-worn effect; we wanted to keep the character. For a fun pop we finished the rocking rails in a vibrant coral color that was super hot for the sea-son. We, of course, used spray paint for the painting process as it was super easy and inexpensive.

Because the chair originally had a canned seat, we were able to salvage a seat from another junker chair and reupholster it in a fun geo-metric patterned fabric.

To finish it off we restrung the back with Jute twine. The Jute is extremely strong and we love the natural tones.

A Kitchen, RenewedA look inside the home of David and Shannon Griffithby Aveed Khakiphotograph by Clark Miller

after eight years of living at their home in durham, david and shannon griffith decided it was time to make a change. Their home was built in 1986 and was in need of some renovating, so the couple discussed building a new home and moving elsewhere. Their three kids would have none of it though; they had grown up in their home and wanted to remain put, so David and Shannon decided to remodel instead. After visiting Home Depot, Costco, and Lowes, they happened upon New Again Kitchen and Bath on their way back to Durham on Park Avenue. They stopped in and things just clicked. After meeting with designer Ric Powers, they decided it was time to make a big change all at once rather than in phases and they set out on their first major renovation adventure. Ric visited the couple’s home and found a galley-style kitchen with breakfast nook that led directly into both the living and family rooms. The couple impressed upon Ric that it was their goal to improve storage and create an open eating area. So he set out to create just that. Weeks later, the products were in and the construction crew from New Again Kitchen and Bath went to work gutting the entire kitchen and installing bullnosed

Madura Gold granite countertops, brand new birch cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, and a new pantry for added storage. Perhaps the most helpful addition though, a granite buffet tablet, provided the family with a convenient eating area in the kitchen as well as a location to host larger meals for parties and holiday get togethers. They finished the kitchen off with can lighting above and under-cabinet lighting to further liven up the space.

David and Shannon couldn’t be happier and continue to rave about the kitchen remodel to friends and family. They both agree, it has had a significant impact on the look and feel of their house and they would encourage anyone thinking about making the investment to take the plunge. Affordability and quality were both a large focus of the project, and one conversation with these two will leave no doubt that Ric and the folks at New Again came through in spades.

When it comes to sustainabiLitY, there are few companies that can claim the accolades that Butte County’s Recology can. Hailed as a Climate Action Leader by the California Climate Registry, Recology has been the recipient of numerous awards including the LEED Gold Certification and WRAP (Waste Reduction Awards Program) award. Easily the most recognizable of the larger waste management and recycling companies in Butte County, most everyone in the area has seen the Recology logo float by on their large white collection trucks, and with a presence like that it’s hard to believe they’re anything but a nationally-owned, corporate chain. The secret though, is that they aren’t at all. Recology’s roots run deep in California. Founded by Italian immigrants in the early 1920’s, Sunset Scavenger Company was formed as an employee-owned business to sort through refuse in the San Francisco area with the mission to discover, reclaim, and repurpose anything and everything possible. They repurposed bottles and sold them to startup wineries, relocated usable clothing to new homes and planted the seeds necessary to prove that life was more sustainable when we learn to reuse. From buttons to dishrags, and everything you could imagine in between, Sunset Scavenger Company recycled it all and quickly made a name for itself as a Bay Area leader in sustainability.

In the 1980s the company rebranded itself as Norcal Waste Systems and after expanding to incorporate a number of smaller outfits, rebranded itself one final time in 2009 as Recology to provide the family of companies with a common identity. The new name focused on the company’s continued commitment to being a resource recovery company, as the original founders of its parent Sunset Scavenger Company intended, rather than one devoted to waste disposal. Today, Recology stands in a league all their own, dedicating the majority of their time to building and deploying innovative ideas that continue to foster the culture created by Sunset Scavenger Company over ninety years ago. They are currently the only company providing local food scrap recycling, turning food waste from locations like Sierra Nevada, Chico State and Butte College into compost that is then used to help Napa vineyards and local farmers grow healthier crops organically. They also run a full-service construction and demolition department that repurposes any and all items used or removed from a building during construction or teardown. Perhaps our favorite part of their culture though, is their intense commitment to, and involvement in, the communities which they serve. Each member of the team must maintain, at minimum, membership in two separate community boards or organizations and volunteer to

better the community whenever possible. Rather than focusing on the bottom line, the company has focused on how to make a difference locally, and success has clearly followed. Employee owned and operated, Recology now employs seventy people in Butte County who live, work, shop, and pay taxes directly into our cities. Their call center is located here, eighty percent of their employees grew up in the area, and fifty percent of their management team are graduates of Chico State. It doesn’t get much more local than this. Accomplished, but not by any means complacent, the team at Recology is looking to the future and developing new technologies to further their mission in moving California towards their goal of “Waste Zero,” a mantra that seems to light up every member of the group as soon as it’s mentioned. They are currently working on converting waste into a renewable resource such as electricity or bio fuel for use in powering our local communities in the most sustainable way possible, furthering our distance from dependency on foreign oil. When it comes to sustainability, there are few that can hold a candle to the service provided by the folks at Recology, and we, for one, count ourselves lucky to have them around. Call Recology to set up your monthly recycling today. Chances are you may already know the person who answers your call: (530) 342-4444.

Nestled away in the hills of Oroville, there stands a home with views so magnificent

you would lose all concept of time in front of them.

The temperature within its walls remains at a constant,

blissful seventy-two degrees, and the landscape, at least for the most part, maintains itself.

The home is breathtaking, and best of all, it is completely off the

grid.

Originally from the Oroville area, Gary Soudan met his wife Simonne while climbing Mount Lassen after completing dental school at UC San Francisco. Simonne, a Chicago native, was liv-ing in San Diego at the time and the two fell head-over-heels for each other. They moved back to Oroville to open his practice and start a family. Years went by and they accomplished both, creating a successful practice in town and raising four children together. The time finally came when they realized they needed more room to grow, so Gary and Simonne set out in search of the perfect location to build their new home in Oroville. Weekend-after-weekend the two scoured the area, but nothing quite met their needs. Due to the nature of Gary’s job, the house had to be no more than twenty minutes from the office, and due to the size of their family, the land had to be large enough to provide some room to roam. Finding the location of their dreams was becoming an increas-ingly distant possibility until the two came upon a fifty acre par-cel of land just up from a remote shore of the lake. Gary grabbed his yellow lab, Gunner, and took off up the mountain. At the peak, surrounded in trees, there sat a plateau that fit every need the family settled on. It was private, there was ample space for the kids to play, the view belonged on a postcard, and it came stocked with more trees than they could have possibly asked for. Gary bounded down the hill, called his real estate agent and bought the property. Throughout the family’s negotiations on what was required for the new home, one thing continued to come up: low main-tenance living. Being an outdoorsy family, having the ability to leave at a moment’s notice when adventure came calling was of utmost importance, so their new home was designed with that in mind. The conversations on low maintenance living also ulti-mately led them to explore new areas of opportunity in sustain-ability, and when the couple asked PG&E what it would cost to bring services to their new location, the astronomical amount made an off-the-grid installation a no-brainer. After interviewing company-after-company and discovering inconsistencies with each, Simonne found Lance McClung and the team at AES in Chico. He visited their property, immedi-ately knew what to do and set out to create a system that would

allow them to live completely off the grid. They decided on a 6kW solar system to be installed on the hillside along with two windspires for supplemental energy production. In just a few days AES was out at the house and completed the installation in its entirety. The non-roof system composed of thirty-three solar panels sits flush on the hillside and is angled for ideal production during the winter months when solar is more difficult to rely upon. Aesthetically, the panels are barely visible from the house and look more like sculpture artwork than a mini power plant. Instead of installing panels that track the sun throughout the day, the Soudans opted for a few extra solar panels. The system was completely turnkey and they were able to start enjoying its benefits within days of starting its installation. To maximize the efficiency of their off-the-grid setup, the fam-ily decided to landscape with low maintenance and drought tol-erant plant-life (for advice on this check out Courtney Paulson’s tips from Magnolia Gift & Garden on page 37). They further insulated their plants with rubber bark that guarantees better moisture maintenance for root systems. Less watering meant less strain on their 17 gallon/minute well system and even further savings on their energy usage. When it came time to choose materials, appliances and light-ing, the couple went with LED lighting throughout the house, outfitting it with some one-hundred-plus bulbs. They also elect-ed to use natural stone throughout the house due to its longer lifespan and chose energy efficient appliances that matched their daily needs. They opted for energy-efficient dual pane windows like those found at Miller Glass and heavily insulated their walls and attic space.

his last year was the first full year they spent with their new energy system in place and the results were undeniable. The family lived in pure sun-powered bliss throughout the entire year with-out even a hiccup in the delivery of energy to their home. During the hot summer months, the house stayed at a cool seventy-two degrees; during the dark and rainy days of winter, the TV

stayed on in the family room while the kids enjoyed gaming in the game room downstairs. They had experienced plenty of outages with PG&E due to fallen trees at their previous home, but there were no such experiences here. The lights throughout their 4,000 square foot home stayed on through-out the winter with plenty of energy to spare. To keep the house warm, they used their upstairs and downstairs wood stoves, utilizing the wood fuel surrounding their house; not only did it provide warmth throughout the winter months, but it also gave Gary plenty of exercise during a time when most people remain sedentary. Over the last few months, Gary and Simonne have hosted a number of gatherings at their home and each and every one of those get togethers has left their guests in awe as to how they can power an entire home of that size without PG&E, and not just power it, but do so without compromising the normal daily energy usage that they grew accustomed to at their old home. The lack of compromising is so shocking in fact, that two of his patients have already talked to Lance,

Perfectly crafted LEDs give elegant accessories like this chan-delier a sustainable touch. The family lived in

and one of them has already completed installation on their own solar system. With the list of people Gary sees on a daily basis, he’s the biggest form of advertis-ing AES could possibly have, and as he sees it, they’ve paid him back by helping him reach his goal for clean, reusable energy each and every month. As one of the sweetest and most hospitable families we’ve ever met, the Soudans are without a doubt the quintessential sustainable American family. Making the investment to prove that a family can live a normal life completely off the grid and choosing to lessen their

impact on the earth is inspirational to say the least, and for that we salute them.

Green up your LifeWhile we would love to believe that someday everyone could run out and invest the necessary money to completely pull their home off the grid, we do have to keep our feet firmly rooted in reality. Thankfully, there are plenty of smart and affordable products and services we can use though, that won’t break the bank. Every step counts, and below are a few options from some of our favorite companies that will help “green-up” your life. Whether you start with one and take on the others as you can afford them, or jump right in and incorporate them all, you’re making a conscious effort to work towards a brighter, more eco-friendly tomorrow.

AES / EnErgy COnSErvATiOnJust like the Soudans in their off-the-grid home, you too can install solar to significantly lessen or completely eliminate your dependence on conventional energy from the grid. There are even leasing options available that can make the plunge into solar power cost less each month than your PG&E bill.

Scrubbs Car Wash / WATEr COnSErvATiOnWashing your car at home in your driveway uses approximately seven gallons of fresh water every minute. In a fifteen minute wash (and everyone knows it takes longer than that), your hose has

wasted nearly one hundred gallons of water on washing one car. Washing your car at Scrubbs, a WaterSavers certified car wash, can save sixty gallons of water or more per wash and best of all, their containment system also does a significantly better job of handling cleaning materials than your curbside drain. The average working American currently washes their car once every other week. By visiting Scrubbs, over 1,680 gallons of water would be saved each year alone.

Junk King / rECyClingNothing is worse for the environment than improperly handled waste or items that slowly deteriorate into the water system. Junk King specializes in removing unwanted waste from homes and recycling whatever they possibly can. The best part? You don’t have to move a muscle. Give them a call at 1-800-995-JUNK, point out the junk pile, sit back, grab a glass of ice cold lemonade, and let them do what they do best. You’ll look like the household hero by getting rid of that menacing eyesore, and you’ll be helping save the environment at the same time. Sounds like a win-win to us.

Reimer Pest Control / WATEr COnSErvATiOn

Preventing weeds from popping up helps keep necessary water usage to a minimum. Having a pre-emergent sprayed over your lawn in the spring will keep weed roots from forming and

soaking up extra water from your lawn. Keeping your hedges, plants and trees trimmed will also lower water needs for your landscape and will keep those pesky varmints from killing your prized tomatoes.

Granite Transformations /rECyClEd COunTErTOPSTile countertops, like the kind installed in over 85% of homes in California, are safe havens for bacteria. The porous surface of the grout provides plenty of hiding places for bacteria to develop, creating a dangerous environment for food preparation. Granite Transformations recycled glass countertops are non-porous and bacteria-resistant, making those worries a thing of the past. Best of all, they’re made

of 70% post-consumer recycled glass, so the remodel is just as sustainable as it is beautiful.

Budget Blinds & Miller Glass / EnErgy COnSErvATiOnYou may not realize it, but a considerable amount of your home’s energy is lost directly to the windows that you love peering through. On average, 50% of

your home’s heat gain during the summer months is through your windows, as well as 50% of the heat lost during the winter. This negative gain and loss equates to 50% more work for your heating and AC unit. Simply installing energy efficient blinds can decrease the energy lost through your windows by as much as 80%. To take it one step further, stop by Miller Glass in Chico and take a look at their super energy efficient window options. Changing out old single-pane windows in your home and replacing them with dual-pane will make a bigger impact than you could possible imagine.

OnE Of ChiCO’S mOST RESPECTED anTiquE STORES, Country Squyres’ Antiques has been providing visitors with fine jewelry and beautiful furniture since 1973. Originally from Shingletown, California, Kathy met Bill Squyres after she moved to Chico in 1964. Kathy attended Chico State and earned her teaching credential while Bill began working as a general contractor. In 1973, the two decided to open a furniture store on third street in downtown Chico and the store has remained in the same location since. What started as primarily furniture sales, though, quickly grew into much more. Over the next few years, Country Squyres’ Antiques began to carry antique fine jewelry as well as surprise treasures from around the world. The two expanded the shop and Bill moved his fire protection company into the back where he and his son now work together. Over the last few years, the the Squyreses have come upon a number of impressive finds including a bracelet from the 1700s made of 18 karat gold, and added blue enameling in the 1920s, which is currently for sale at the shop. From Tahitian pearls to antique pocket watches, they have a bit of something for everyone. Our favorite point of interest? Country Squyres takes the old and makes it new again by finding new owners who will love old pieces. Sustainability plus cool antique rarities make this a must-visit location in downtown Chico.

Hesitant to Jump Back into the Market? Consider Dollar Cost

Averaging by Renée Michel, MBA

Financial Advisor for Asset Management Group

Have you ever Heard tHe term “emotional investing”? Emotional investing contradicts ideal investing behavior – buy low and sell high. However, when the markets are up, people tend to invest more and when it goes down, they sell. Food for thought…Investors who sold their investments at the market bottom in March 2009 and moved to cash lost out on the 115.8% gain the market (as measured by the S&P 500) experienced from 3/09 – 3/12.1 Successful investing requires discipline and dollar cost averaging (DCA) can help. DCA is also commonly referred to as regular investing. If you have $1,200 and invest it all at once at a price of $10 per share, you might jump for joy if the price rises immediately to $14, or lose the confidence to continue investing if the price falls to $5. Whether the market is at a high or a low, DCA keeps you investing. DCA works especially well in volatile times. Making fixed dollar investments at regular intervals buys more shares when prices are lower and fewer shares when prices rise. So, over time DCA may lower the average price per share paid and can help smooth out the effect of volatility in a portfolio. The chart below is a hypothetical illustration and shows the difference between investing your $1,200 all at once versus investing $100 monthly over a period of 1 year.

Yoga Pose of the Month

PrasaritaPadottanasanaby Dr. Paula Barros, D.C.

Alyssa C. in Paradise asks:Over the years, I’ve picked up a good number of pains

in my neck and back. Should I use heat or ice when treating them?Answer by Vincent Commendatore, D.C., B.S.N., R.N.

45

We are going to take a quick detour from our nose-to-toes exploration of the human body this month to talk about TIME. The concept of time has been coming up in conversation

frequently (Ha!) as I discuss healthy lifestyle decisions with my clientele. This time of year is the perfect season to go on vacation and get away from the intense heat in the North State. For many folks, those vacations do not include some form of exercise-related physical activity (the 8 oz curls do not count as exercise). I find myself asking vacationers to allocate part of their vacation towards exercise. Often the response I get sounds a little like this:“I just don’t have TIME to exercise on vacation.” As a grin creeps across my face, I launch

into some simple math. Out of the 168 hours in a week (average vacation), how much time could you justify taking care of your health? Is that not the point of a vacation- to recharge your mind and body? Could you justify 1.5 hours? That is only three half hour sessions of moderate exercise intensity! “Furthermore”, I offer, “if you need some instruction during those half hour endorphin inducing bouts of self-care, why not use the UltraTimer iPhone or Android Interval Timer application to lead you through your workout. It’s like having your trainer in your pocket the whole vacation!” So before you solidify your vacation plans, set aside some time to take care of your body. I know too many folks that get back from vacation and feel like they need ANOTHER vacation.Until next time,Move with intention.

WHen an injury is in an acute stage (0 to 3 days) then ice is better than heat. One way to know whether you are still in the acute stage is to look for redness or heat around the injured tissue. Ice causes blood vessels to contract reducing the amount of fluid that can escape the vascular system thus reducing the swelling. Inflammation and swelling are a body’s natural defense and part of the healing process. It should not be stopped completely, but if there is too much inflammation in the beginning, it should be controlled with icing. For sub-acute stage injuries (a few days to a few weeks) you can use both ice and heat. The alternating of ice and heat can help pump oxygen and nutrients into the

area and waste products out. For injuries in the chronic stage (a few weeks to a few months or more) it is fine to just stay with heat. This will help relax the muscles, continue to bring

nutrients to the area, and can reduce some pain. Ice and heat only mask pain temporarily. The real question is, “What is causing the pain and inflammation in the first place?” Without answering this question, the true problem will never really go away; the pain and inflammation may never leave, and if they do, they will likely come back. At Chico Spine & Wellness, we work extensively to find out what the underlying cause of your pain is and then come up with a treatment plan to fix the problem. Stop in and let’s find out what’s ailing you!

This is a resting pose with the legs spread wide apart and stretching up. The torso is inverted and the head is rested on the floor or on a block or a bolster. The benefits of this pose are tremendous. It soothes the brain and the sympathetic nervous system, including reducing depression and boosting overall mood. This pose energizes the heart and lungs, reducing blood pressure and relieving headaches, migraines and fatigue. It also tones the abdominal organs and can relieve lower backache. The pose serves to strengthen the knee joint and makes the hip joint supple. Give it a try!

To begin, inhale and spread your feet 4 to 5 feet apart keeping them parallel to each other.

Exhale and bend forward extending your spine and bringing your torso down toward the floor.

Place your hands on the floor while flexing the elbows. If possible, place the crown of the head on the floor or on a block or bolster while drawing the abdomen in and pushing the sternum forward.

Move the thighbones and groin back to reduce pressure on your head.

risks for a number of HealtH Problems increase as people age. These include arthritis, cataracts and certain cancers. Sometimes, a combination of genetics and environmental factors—including your lifestyle—puts you at risk as well. By working with your doctor, you can better understand your specific risks. Just as important, you can learn how to head off those things that pose some of the greatest risks. For example, your doctor might recommend that you stop smoking,

improve your diet, get moving and have

recommended screening tests. In some cases, you might need medication. If you already have a health problem, it’s important to work closely with your doctor. Doing so can help you manage your condition. And that can help you live as healthfully as possible.

Kimberley A. in Chico asks:

When should I use an OTC whitener? Are they really safe?Answer by Tommy Farris

kimberly, tHere are a lot of Products on tHe drug store sHelf tHat tout or are labeled “WHitening”....even dental floss. Having whiter teeth and an attractive smile is important to almost everyone. Over-the-counter products have improved over the years, but many of my patients who have tried them report they taste horrible, get messy and often do not provide the desired results. They may be assumed safe since they are readily available, but long-term or overuse may be harmful. More importantly, many dental problems can contribute to darker teeth and unless those problems are treated, no whitening efforts will be effective. Some products may even make the problems worse.

The safest path to whiter teeth is to have a dental examination to diagnose any dental problems and start with a healthy mouth. I have a number of patients who have whitened successfully with the appropriate over-the-counter product. More often,

people choose to have a professionally-supervised treatment that is quicker, more effective and less messy to use. Whitening products only change the shade of natural tooth enamel and are

not effective on fillings or crowns. A beautiful smile and a healthy mouth is invaluable. At Nelsen Family Dentistry we offer complimentary tooth-whitening with professional products following an initial exam and hygiene visit. We are committed to your oral health and to our goal is to keep you “smiling for a lifetime”!

tHe skin is a very valuable organ. It protects our other vital organs and functions as a sensory organ that helps with thermoregulation and produces Vitamin D, to name a few functions. The skin ages with time and other factors. There are two types of aging: the first is chronological (intrinsic) aging, and the second is photoaging (extrinsic) aging. Chronological or intrinsic aging is due to a natural slowing of collagen production, decreased elasticity, and a decrease in cell turnover that starts in our twenties and may not be visible until much later. Intrinsic aging causes fine lines, transparent dry skin, itching, and a loss of fat just underneath the skin that causes hollow cheeks, sunken eye sockets and aging hands. Intrinsic aging is controlled by genetics and can be modified by lasers, surgery, or anti-aging hormones to a certain extent. The other kind of aging is extrinsic, usually premature due to external factors such as sun and pollutants. Sun exposure causes age spots, broken blood vessels, “leathery” skin, and skin cancer. Photoaging is determined by the amount of sun exposure and intensity of the sun at the time of exposure. Needless to say, fair people get more photodamage than dark skin because the pigmentation has intrinsic protection against the sun.Smoking is another big extrinsic factor, and can also cause yellowing of the skin. And gravity (which can not be modified) is another cause of extrinsic aging.Facial expressions cause aging too. It takes more muscles to frown than to smile, and these lines can etch themselves into the skin. Sleep positions affect wrinkling, so sleeping on your back is ideal. So take care of your skin by avoiding the sun, sleeping on your back, not smoking, and SMILE more than you frown!!

Lisa V. in Chico asks:I have a problem staying consistent with my working

and eating habits. Is there anything you would recommend for a woman who is short on time and in serious need of getting back in shape?Answer by Toby Schindelbeck

absolutely, lisa. This is a common situation for most of my clients. We have all heard that eating 5-6 smaller meals is better for losing

fat and having more energy, but between work and taking care of the family, today’s women have limited time to pre-prepare healthy meals. This situation is easily remedied by having a delicious, easy to mix protein shake in between meals, or as a meal replacement. For example, our best-selling protein, Pro7, has 34 grams of protein, only 1 gram of fat, and only 2 grams of carbohydrates. This shake can be mixed in a shaker cup in only 4 oz of cold water and tastes great. Here is a sample day’s meal plan that will make nutrition fit into your hectic schedule: Breakfast: egg whites, oatmeal, berries. Mid-morning snack: Pro7 shake with an apple. Lunch: Salad with chicken or tuna on it. Mid-Afternoon snack: Pro7 shake with a tablespoon of peanut butter. Dinner: meat and veggies. Before bed: Pro7 shake. This is a very general recommendation, and we can customize a nutrition plan for you free with any purchase. Stop by either location and we’ll also give you a FREE sample of protein and a FREE shaker cup so you can try it before you buy it.

sometimes seen as destructive creatures, coyotes are a native animal often seen roaming the foothills of North America. These canine creatures are right in our backyard and aren’t as caustic as many people portray them. Coyotes need a little love too.        Meet Wylie, an 11 year-old coyote was hit by a semi-truck when she was just barely a year old.  After being mended by a veterinarian, Wylie was released to the foundation for nurturing. She is doing very well now, is exercised daily by her

caretakers and has a healthy diet of quail, rabbits, pinky mice, rats, some fish as well as some greens. She is also learning to hunt for her own food through an enrichment program to keep her life more natural.          Wylie has a sponsor to help pay for her food and care, but only 17 of the 56 animals at Kirshner are as lucky as Wylie.        If you’re interested in learning more, sponsoring, or just sharing some love be sure to check out www.kirshner.org or visit the sanctuary Tuesday through Sunday  9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We Here at neW york life receive this question a lot, and it’s a good one. Hopefully you never need to use your life insurance until much later in life, the largest

demographic of people buying life insurance today are over the age of 65, which makes sense due to our recent economic environment. The problem here lies, are these people insurable? You are never too young to have a life insurance policy, for many reasons but the most important is to lock in your insurability. Not only that, as a single mother you are caring and providing for your children, if you were gone tomorrow, wouldn’t you live comfortably today knowing that they would be able to go to the college they want to, or buy their first home because you took the necessary precautions to show you love them. Life insurance is purchased for many reasons, but the two that stand out the most are because of debt that has accrued, or for love. Regardless of our age, as soon as our responsibility extends to someone (or in your case a couple someones) beyond ourself, life insurance shouldn’t be a question, but an absolute to guarantee their continued care should the unthinkable happen. Your friends are giving you the right information. If you have any further questions, please feel free to stop in, I’d be glad to answer them.

Though, as resident chefs Jason Colabove, Nate Gansfried, and Warren Miller will point out, the road to the top isn’t always an easy one. In September of 2008, after having experienced the excitement and glow as Chico’s newest and most sought after restaurant for just over nine months, the economy’s downward spin started to set in, taking its toll on the local fine dining industry. The youthfulness that at first had made Crush a foodie go-to, quickly became its downfall as patrons began to frequent locations where they had been regulars, significantly dropping the day-to-day influx of clientele the restaurant had previously enjoyed. Rather than dropping prices in an attempt to regain customer interest, the team at Crush decided to dig in and retool the entire restaurant from top-to-bottom. The following nine months could have easily been recorded as the definitive book on how to properly operate a successful restaurant. Committed to providing customers

with value that they wouldn’t experience anywhere else, Crush adopted the policy of refusing to say, “no.” Menus were seen as suggestions, and customer requests were treated as mandates rather than put-offs. If someone ordered peanut butter and jelly, the challenge became creating the best peanut butter and jelly sandwich they had ever had. Having mastered the service element, they set off to tackle the customer experience. Investing heavily in the design of the restaurant, the team added noise canceling foam to the ceilings to allow for a new and creative layout that featured three separate dining areas, one for casual dining, one for fine dining and another for bar and lounge dining. The investment paid off and the restaurant quickly saw an increase both in the number of patrons as well as the range in demographics. They furthered this experience by adding a brand new patio dining area, valet parking and what would arguably come to be Chico’s most popular happy hour menus. Four years later, it’s hard to believe that there’s anything left to improve on, but the trio of chefs maintain that they’ve just scratched the surface. Having recently

implemented a new Chef ’s Club that provides family style dining, the chefs have challenged themselves to reinvent each and every dish on their menu, and once completed, to do so all over again. The purpose, each says in his own way, is to continue to evolve at the most fundamental level of the business. Cooking outside of their comfort zones and attempting brand new dishes is not out of the ordinary any longer. Egos are guaranteed to be checked at the door, and the food is increasingly farm fresh, utilizing products from local names like Comanche Creek Farms, S&S and the Thursday Night Market that takes place on Broadway Street directly below. In the fall, Crush will once again host the Boys and Girls’ Club of Chico in a one-of-its-kind training program that will teach the youth how to operate in a fast-paced restaurant atmosphere. If you remember from our earlier writeup, last year was a complete success, and we’re positive this year will be even better. Keep an eye on their website for dates and times. It is clear from even the most fleeting of visits that there’s something special in the air here, and this time, it feels like it’s here to stay.

Artist Profile:Lauren Mesaby Alyssa Worley

kind, cHarming, and easygoing, Lauren Mesa is a fulltime mother of two and an artist. She specializes in acrylic painting and mosaics, while also being known for her work in ceramics.

Lauren was born in San Jose, California but lived as a vagabond child before settling down in our small town of Chico. Her parents were in the army, so she grew up all over the world; Hawaii, Spain (where she met her husband), and Germany.

ul: What do you like about Butte County?lm: I really love the seasons, trees and, of course, the people. The loyalty from person-to-person in this town is so unique. Everybody supports everybody. We all want to see one another thrive.

ul: How did you get into art?lm: Ever since I was a child, there has been no escape. Since I was a little girl I loved to draw people. I would illustrate pages as I read books!

ul: What advice do you have for young artists?lm: It’s a tricky career so think hard about if you want to live off your art. You just might have to get a teaching credential! Just know, art can always be a passion even if it’s not your job.

ul: Do you listen to music when you create? If so, who?lm: Yes, definitely; a good Pandora mix of Allison Krauss, Eva Cassidy, Sting, and James Taylor.

ul: Where do you work on your art?lm: I have an art room in my house! It is painted teal green, my favorite color, and is very comfortable. It suits me.ul: What media do you use?lm: I use acrylic and mixed media paintings, ceramic word art and crosses, as well as found art (shells, glass, metals).

ul: What artists inspire you?lm: Georgia O’ Keefe, and Vincent Van Gogh.

ul: What in the world inspires you?lm: Nature, and light.

ul: Have you learned anything about yourself or the world through your own artistic process?lm: I’m a writer too and being a writer/artist is healing and helps me understand the world I came from. When I’m painting or doing mosaics, I don’t think of anything else. Everything but the art seems to fall away.

ul: What are 3 words to describe yourself?lm: Committed, Truthful and Free-Spirited

ul: Does your art portray those 3 words?lm: Definitely free spirited, many of my pieces are whimsical or dreamlike. I am true to myself in the way I see life or imagine life, which comes through in the art itself. Being truthful of who you are is essential.

ul: What is your favorite quote?lm: Im all about quotes! My favorite is “Creativity takes courage.” -Henri Matisse
