BOOK REVIEW

THROUGH PAINTED DESERTS: Light, God, and Beauty on the Open Road

By Donald Miller

Donald Miller is just a normal man living Houston, Texas when he meets Paul a hippy-naturalist that lives out of his van. Paul had stopped in town to work and earn some money and ended up meet-ing Donald through work. When Paul is getting ready to leave, Don decides to go with him. They jour-ney to the Grand Canyon and then on to Oregon. They cross beautiful landscapes and Don and Paul form a bond as close as brotherhood. Throughout their travels and talks, Don will learn that he is in search of more than just adventure, he is searching for soul and meaning. This book made me think deeper about my faith than I ever have. It addresses the the age-old questions: Why are we here? Why do we de-serve to live when so many others die? Is God real, or are we just what science says-- organisms in a vast universe that we can barely begin to comprehend. This is one of the greatest books I have ever read.

Auto: From Greek autós meaning “self”Autism: A condition in which a person is removed from social interaction. An isolated self.Hero: A person who is admired or ideal-ized for courage, outstanding achieve-ments, or noble qualities.

Lance Rice grew up afraid to leave his house, or even speak. He grew up autistic in a time when autism was rarely discussed and was treated and tested in ways consid-ered unethical and even illegal today. And in a world often confused by his condition, Lance grew up to be a hero.

“I remember 39 years ago, Sunday July 14, 1974 when we went to Kelleys Island and I saw that Burger can. ‘Brewed with artesian spring water.’ And I pulled it out from a garbage barrel. And I got my hands greasy and my mom told my dad to wipe my

hands off.” In the video trailer introducing Lance’s Brewery Tour, Lance explains how he first became interested in collecting and learning about American breweries. From his collection of beer cans came a passion and thirst for knowledge that has kept him growing, learning and overcoming fears that were once completely debilitating.

Since saving that first Burger can, Lance, who has a photographic memory, has become a gifted beer historian and has dedicated his entire life to beer. His life-long dream has been to write a book about Amer-ican breweries, and at 55 years old, with the help of his nephew, Aaron Rice, Lance left home for the first time without a parent or guardian to make that dream come true. The project is called Beer.Autism.Hope. and along with Lance’s book, Lance’s Brewery Tour, Aaron is creating a video documen-tary of the journey to show the beauty of

PICKETT LEADS SYMPHONY IN “HARMONIC LANDSCAPES” FINAL CONCERT

Kyle Wiley Pickett (left), Music Direc-tor of the North State Symphony, conducts his final Chico concert on May 10 in Lax-son Auditorium. A cello soloist, David Re-quiro, will perform with the orchestra. The concert is entitled Harmonic Landscapes.

Pickett has been recognized for in-creasing the quality of Symphony perfor-mances and for the music he selects. He now leads symphonies in Topeka, KS, and Springfield, MO, and has moved to Mis-souri with his wife Alice and their two sons. “In 2001, when we formed the Symphony,” said Pickett, “it was my first real conducting position. It’s been wonderful, and I‘m grateful for the support and love I’ve received. Now it’s time to move on.”

Cellist David Requiro (right) has performed with orchestras from Marin to Tokyo. He’ll play the Concerto by Antonin Dvorak, composer of the “New World” Symphony. Also on the program are works by English composer Benjamin Britten and Johannes Brahms.

Sponsor of the May 10th Chico con-cert is Stifel, Nicolaus. Requiro is spon-sored by Connie Eccles. For tickets to the Chico concert, call 898-6333 or visit www.chicostatetickets.com.

Beginning in the fall, four conductors who hope to replace Pickett, will each con-duct the orchestra. Season tickets for the Symphony’s Season of Discovery go on sale in May. For more information on the North State Symphony, call 898-5984.

I shuffle through a fury of loud tractors and beeping diesel trucks trying to reach the entrance of Down Range Indoor Training Center, which is finishing the last phases of construction and getting ready for the May 31st grand opening. This indoor shooting range is undoubtedly shaping up to be a great recreational outlet and community as-set. “We are trying to become the first five-star shooting range in California and certain parameters must be met with safety classes, training philosophies, facility appearance, staff and community involvement.” says Will Clark, former Navy SEAL and CEO of Down Range. Even amongst the loud con-struction uproar, it is easy to recognize that Down Range will have no problem accom-plishing the five-star ranking.

Formally Moss Lumber Company on highway 99, Will and his partner Steve Dyke (both active Chico Police Officers) have transformed the building into an enor-mous shooting complex offering much more

than the typical indoor shooting range. Down Range will provide a welcoming, clean and safe environment for families, ex-perienced shooters and first-time beginners. Until now, the Chico area has been limit-ed to indoor shooting ranges for handguns only. Down Range is expanding shooting practice and recreational opportunities with the ability to accommodate rifle, shotgun and archery usage. The brightly lit, twelve-lane firearm range offers both static (sta-tionary) and moving target practice at a lengthy 25 yards. The archery range is going to be the only 50-yard range in all of Cal-ifornia. The archery pro shop is a separate area from of the rest of the store and offers a very knowledgeable staff, some of whom are World Class archers, to help you with all your archery needs and questions. Vi-sually, both the firearm and archery ranges are open to everyone, separated by glass so the public is able to watch shooters practice from almost anywhere in the building. Two

separate lounge areas are located near the archery and firearm ranges. Featuring Wi-Fi, concessions and big screen TVs, making the facility a fun experience for everyone, even those who are not physically out on the range.

Covering all aspects of the shooting world, Down Range features several help-ful and important classes including, Cali-fornia Concealed Weapons (CCW), basic, intermediate and advanced pistol, rifle and shotgun courses, and Girls with Guns, and youth classes. Held in the state-of-the-art classrooms, these training programs are taught by experienced and encouraging professionals. Membership programs are also available to the avid shooter and fire-arm enthusiast. An excess of benefits such as store discounts, guest passes and no range fees are included with different membership packages.

No matter what your skill level is, the knowledgeable staff is there to make the most out of your shooting experience. A cer-tain welcoming and relaxed feeling will sur-round you when stepping into Down Range Indoor Training Center--a very rare charac-teristic for an indoor shooting range. This new facility will soon draw firearm and ar-chery fanatics not only from Northern Cal-ifornia, but from all over the United States, giving our small community another desir-able facet. For more info on Down Range, visit downrangechico.com and “like” them on Facebook for regular updates to get ready for that May 31st grand opening!

“Sherry Landis is by far the best real estate agent in Chico. She is professional, positive, and has incredible follow through. She helped us navigate our way through the sale of two homes and the purchase of another—all at the same time! She never missed a beat. She made sure we understood the process, and stayed in constant contact with us. Even after all three homes closed, she continued to call, email, and text just to make sure everything was going as planned. We could not have done it without her.”

Eating Out Sabotaging your Weight Loss Goals?

by Dr. Dina Rabo, DC

I always say there are usually two com-ponents to success-ful weight loss: the first is actually losing the weight, which is a temporary stage, followed by stabili-

zation and maintenance, which is a lifelong commitment!

How often do you eat out a week? Three to five times? Daily? Oftentimes I hear from clients who are on our weight loss protocol that they didn’t lose weight because they “went out to eat and got off track.” The re-ality is however, that because of current on-the-go lifestyles, fast paced schedules, and convenience, most people eat out regularly and could choose to eat healthier, rather than using it as an excuse to get fatter. Remember, the body is made to gain weight, so gaining is a normal process. But is the weight you gain going to be in the realm of muscle or fat? You decide. You may maintain some control when eating out, choosing to eat smaller portions, less fried foods, creamy sauce dishes, and sug-ary drinks.

We have endless opportunities to make better food choices here in California and es-pecially in the Butte County where there is abundance in food crops, from nuts to fruits and vegetables, even grass fed meat, where many of our restaurants buy locally. When eating out there are a few things to keep in mind: you can always ask for a clean piece of meat; which means no sauces or added flavorings which are usually based in sugars and MSG. Replace potatoes with an extra helping of vegetables. Replace the sodas and liquid desserts with water and lemon or iced tea. Skip the bread basket altogether, choose a real dinner. Making better choices more of-ten and splurging once every few weeks will ensure that you have a better chance of main-taining a healthy weight and better control of your health.

Radio-Frequency Treatments for Face and Body Contouring

by Dr. Vimali Paul

The science and technology of ra-dio-frequency waves for skin contouring has been used suc-cessfully for years. Though not perma-

nent, it is non-invasive and virtually pain-free, therefore clients opt to get several treat-ments for best results.

The radio-frequency energy is used to heat the inner layers of the skin so that colla-gen growth is stimulated and the cells release toxins. Retained fluids are drained, blood circulation increases, and connective tissue shrinks and tightens. Over time (usually 3 to 5 treatments are recommended), results become more visible, and improvement in both contour and texture is noticeable. Fat volume is reduced, lax skin is tightened, and collagen cells start to rebuild. There is virtu-ally no down time, and all normal activities can be resumed immediately after treatment. Drinking lots of water on the day of treat-ment is required for the flushing out of tox-ins and preventing dehydration.

The machines used here at the Derm Bar Med-Spa are safe, effective, and our cli-ents are seeing great results. Radio-frequency can be used on problem areas such as upper arms, chin and neck, abdomen, thighs, and buttocks. Measurements are taken before and after to gauge results.

Call the Derm Bar Med-Spa at (530) 342-2672 for a free consultation to see if this or any of our treatments are right for you! 85 Declaration Dr. Suite 100, Chico, CA 95973 | 530.342.2672

Three red Chico State letterman jack-ets hang above a plasma TV, dripping with blood-like red acrylic paint. To the right, pastel apples look juicy enough to take a bite out of and Obama’s acrylic face grins at the foot of the stairs. Lori Stevens’ house is just as wild as her imagination. The wall panels under the TV are painted with chee-tah print, and a papier-mâché creature made by an old student sits on a stool at the entrance of the hallway. In her home by 5-Mile, Lori maniacally explores different medias in her upstairs studio. Ever since she realized her passion for drawing in high school, Lori has tried everything from inta-glio to pastel. Currently, she has returned to her first love of drawing, and elevated it by adding elements of collage.

UL: What brought you to Butte County? LS: I got a job in Orland in 1975 and I taught there for 32 years. I taught art for 25 of them and I taught English for 10.

UL: How do you begin a piece? LS: I begin a piece by probably what most collage artists do, by slapping some glue and paper on a support, on paper actually. And then I just look at it, and I play with it and it grows. I usually have a subject in mind but I don’t quite know how it’s going to play out until I get halfway into the piece, so it’s pretty unplanned.

UL: What media do you use? LS: I use everything, randomly, in a sense sort of frantically, like try this, oh try this!

UL: How did you develop your style? LS: When they offered me the art position at Orland High School, that was art in the mid-80s, and the teacher there was teaching sand candles, where you pour the hot wax into a hole in the sand, then take it out. It was a real hippie thing to do, and macramé, and leather-tooling and decoupage, and I said, ‘Wow, you know, I think art could be more than craft.’ Not that craft is bad, but

I wanted to figure out a way for kids to ex-press themselves so I leaned toward fine art- drawing, painting, color. After teaching art for 25 years, I won’t say I’m proficient at it all, but I did it all, so that’s how I developed my style (laughs).

UL: What inspires you in the world? LS: Smart people and listening to them talk. Literature, fiction primarily, is really inspiring. Those don’t necessarily inspire me to make art, but inspire me to learn more and see more, travel more and experi-ment more and think bigger.

UL: What would you like your art to provide to the world? LS: I would like people to reflect on the val-ue of womanhood, that’s kind of where I am now, less the realistic trucks and apples. More than anything I really want people to make their own interpretations and ques-tion what’s in there rather than me telling them what the story is. But most of what I’m doing right now is kind of feminist based.

UL: What are three words you de-scribe yourself with? LS: I try to be happy, better than that, content. Speedy- I’m like, on speed all the time… There is a word, like ADHD (we later decided on manic). I’ll multitask to death.

UL: What’s the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen? LS: The Pietà by Michelangelo, knocked my socks off, made me cry when I was 13-years-old.

UL: What’s your favorite color? LS: Yellow, bright yellow.

UL: What’s your favorite quote? LS: “It is unimaginably hard to do this, to stay conscious and alive, day in and day out.” - David Foster Wallace

Cherry blossom jewelry, French bar-rettes, soft leather purses in springtime colors, soaps too pretty to use and earrings made from real butterfly wings fill Grace Jr., a shop in downtown Chico. Owned by artist, Poni Mosier, this shop is the perfect stop for Mother’s Day and graduation gifts. Mosier has been making handmade cards for the past 25 years, even selling to places like Neiman Marcus. She is a professional when it comes to sending thoughtful mes-sages in the form of hand-crafted cards.

UL: What do you get from your art? PM: I just love doing it. I have a report card from when I went to a one-room school, and there were only 10 kids in the whole school. My report card is just this hand-written thing, it’s so cute, and the teacher said, “Poni is our little beauty-lover.” I love nice things, and I like finding things and putting things together.

UL: How did you develop your style? PM: Oh, I have no idea. Things evolve when you’re an artist, it doesn’t make any differ-ence what discipline you’re in, one thing leads to another. You see things that inspire you, you see things that you want to do. A lot of times I talk to other artists and they’re all concerned about competition and some-body stealing your work and trust me, there are 10 other people out there in the world doing exactly what you’re doing, it’s just the way it is. There is nothing new under the sun, but you put your personal bend on it because of what you’ve learned and the dis-ciplines you’ve been in, the teachers you’ve had.

UL: What is your education? PM: I’m an art major, I was an art teacher. I graduated from Chico State in 1970, and I’ve taught high school in Chico, Durham, and my longest stunt was up in Tahoe.

UL: How do you begin a piece? PM: Two ways: I get new paper and that in-spires me, or I start writing. I’ll write words, then take those particular words and find a paper I think they go with. Sometimes I’ll just wake up in the middle of the night with something, like “Oh I’m going to do that!” And then I have to write it down before I forget.

UL: What’s the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen? PM: One of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen was a cloud bank. I was coming down Nord Avenue and the entire south-ern horizon was an anvil cloud that had not burst yet, it was going to become a thun-derhead. It must have been miles wide and the sun was setting so it was glowing a pale peach-orange. It was huge! I couldn’t be-lieve it, I kept driving just so I could see it and I never got to the end, like chasing a rainbow. Right here in Chico, of all places. Odd that I would think of that, I mean I’ve been to the Louvre.

UL: What do you want your art to provide to the world? PM: I guess a means of expression and a connection. When you send someone a card, and truly, it doesn’t matter what kind of a card it is, it is a reflection of yourself and your feelings and intent in giving that card to that person. I think my cards have a nice depth to them, and the simple ones like “Happy Birthday” have a nice message.

UL: What’s your favorite quote? PM: “Nothing is worth more than this day.” - Goethe

NEW RESIDENT TO BUTTE COUNTY: Bengal Tiger

This beautiful girl is a Bengal Tiger named Jade II. Jade II was born blind. Due to her disability she was pushed around by the other cubs and had difficulties nurs-ing from her mother. Jade II was born at a responsible breeding facility that supplies animals for zoos and sanctuaries but this facility did not have the resources to help her like we do. Animals with disabilities are often euthanized; the Barry R Kirshner Foundation provides a home for animals with special needs.

Name: Jade II

Age: Approximately three months.

Diet: Beef chuck, turkey, quail, lamb, rab-bit, goat, pork.

Diet in the Wild: Wild buffalo, deer, wild pigs.

Native Area: Tropical and mangrove forests in the Indian subcontinent.

Protection Status: Endangered.

Fun Fact: When you walk by Jade II’s en-closure you might catch a slight smell. We spray the walls and all of her toys with pep-permint or vinegar. Jade II locates the walls and each toy in her enclosure by smell.
