Charley Reese’s final column for the Orlando Sentinel. He has been a journalist for 49 years. He is retiring and this is HIS LAST COLUMN.

This is about as clear and easy to understand as it can be. The article below is completely neutral, neither anti-republican or democrat. Charlie Reese, a retired reporter for the Orlando Sentinel, has hit the nail directly on the head, defining clearly who it is that in the final analysis must assume responsibility for the judgments made that impact each one of us every day. It’s a short but good read. Worth the time. Worth remembering!

* * *545 vs. 300,000,000 PeoplePoliticians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don’t propose a federal budget. The President does.

You and I don’t have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.

You and I don’t write the tax code, Congress does.

You and I don’t set fiscal policy, Congress does.

You and I don’t control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one President, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally,

and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a President to do one cotton-picking thing. I don’t care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator’s responsibility to determine how he votes.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.

What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The President can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.

The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? John Boehner. He is the leader of the majority party. He and fellow House members, not the President, can approve any budget they want. If the President vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can’t think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it’s because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red, it’s because they want it in the red.

If the Army & Marines are in Iraq and Afghanistan it’s because they want them in Iraq and Afghanistan.

If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it’s because they want it that way.

There are no insoluble government problems.

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like “the economy”,”inflation,” or “politics” that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.

They, and they alone, have the power.

They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.

Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees.

We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess.

Charlie Reese is a former columnist of the Orlando Sentinel Newspaper. What you do with this article now that you have read it is up to you. This might be funny if it weren’t so true.

For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 3:16 JKV

“We must learn to live together as brothers and sisters in Christ or perish together as fools; but when we lose the right to be different

we lose the privilege to be free.”

One Race, One Blood

“History shows us that the first humans, Adam and Eve, gave birth to the human race in the continent of Africa. Sin entered the world when Adam ate the forbidden fruit and his descendants grew to be very wicked. “And the LORD said, ‘My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”

GENESIS 6:3 NKJV

God saw the evil in the hearts of Adam’s descendants and was going to destroy the world with a great flood. But because Noah loved God, He told him to build an ark to save his family. The Earth was destroyed and only Noah, his wife, their three sons, and their wives were spared. Noah’s descendants eventually repopulated the entire Earth. Every person today came from those eight. We are all one race, the human race!

GENESIS CHAPTER 9-11

After many generations, Noah’s descendants wanted to make a name for themselves and began to build a tower to reach the heavens. God grew furious and scattered the human race over the Earth to Europe, Asia, North and South America and Australia. As a result of this diaspora, a multitude of nationalities, cultures, and languages developed.

Today, many nationalities and cultures make up our nation, the United States of America. If we of this great nation can put aside our differences and work together, we will be able to overcome any obstacle and meet any challenge. Only then can we finally unite and spread peace and prosperity throughout the world as one race, the HUMAN RACE. Let us start with displaying our logo of “United, We Make America” to show people our strength and unity.

And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John 8:32 KJV

WE ARE ALL A PIECE OF THE PUZZLE

A Story Of Faith[Prompted] by faith, Noah, being forewarned by God concerning events of which as yet there was no visible sign, took heed and diligently and reverently constructed and prepared an ark for the deliverance of his own family. By this [his faith which relied on God] he passed judgment and sentence on the world’s unbelief and became an heir and possessor of righteousness (that relation of being right into which God puts the person has faith).

OUR HISTORY

Founded by Walter L. Mathis Sr. and his wife Patricia E. Mathis, Operation Resources, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization founded in 1993. Our founders had a vision of contributing to the community; this vision gave birth to a scholarship fund that has awarded over $60,000 in scholarships to students across Michigan. Our focus on providing information in the fields of education, health, finance, real estate, and religion keeps the vision alive today—and for the future—of providing more scholarships to underprivileged and needy students.

OUR MISSION

We envision Operation Resources, Inc. to be a driving force for the community to achieve thier goals through a well-rounded education. We believe that all the people of the United States, including Black Americans, must come together to build strength as a nation and to work towards logical and fair solutions to our nation’s problems. This can only happen when the children of this nation are properly educated. But our society does not allow every child that chance. Operation Resources, Inc. wants to correct this problem.

OUR GOAL

We hope to encourage businesses and agencies to donate and invest their paid advertising dollars with Operation Resources, Inc. We see a world where Blacks, Whites, Latinos, Asians, and Arabs all have the same opportunities regardless of their nationality. In order to create equality we must offer educational and economic empowerment to those without the proper opportunities. And so our goal is that every reader will have the opportunity to gain the education they need, so that no one, regardless of nationality, sex, age, or class, will be left without a chance to live up to their potential.

REMEMBER

Not all people of your nationality or culture are your friends, and not all people of other nationalities or cultures are your enemies; but we must learn to live together as brothers and sisters in Christ, or perish together as fools.

Winning Spirit of LeadershipEvery morning in Africa a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle; when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.

Being located in the Heartside community has given Take Hold a great opportunity to minister to the many homeless and broken people that live within this city. They strive to offer a safe place for people to come where they can explore their faith and spirituality comfortably. Take Hold also organizes outreach events to help those in need within the Heartside area and to help build a stronger community of people within Heartside as well. They have clothing distributions where people in need can come and get pants, shirts, jackets, shoes, and where they can

get to know one another and build relationships with each other. The clothes they provide for others are gathered on an open donation basis. They also host Heartside community meals, a narcotics anonymous group, ministry schooling, bible studies, and worship gatherings. Along with these forms of ministry Take Hold opens its doors to local and traveling musicians and bands as a place where they may play shows and get to know people within the community. They host a free annual music festival known as Take Hold Fest, which takes place on November 20th. COVER STORY

any Americans are confused about the purpose and difference between

Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is for honoring military personnel who died in service for their country. Veterans Day is for thanking ALL men and women who have served honorably in the military during times of war and peace. World War I began on July 28, 1914, with the declaration of war by Austria-Hungary on Serbia and hostilities between the Allied and Central Powers continued until the signing of the armistice. Even though many people were killed, African Americans weren’t allowed to fight in the war. More than 350,000 African Americans served in segregated units during World War I, mostly as support troops. At the time, the only thing that they were good for and recognized for was cleaning and maintenance work. On November 11, 1919 President Wilson proclaimed Veterans Day as the first commemoration of Armistice Day and World War I, which ended on November 11, 1918, a period of 4 years, 3months, and 14 days. Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I. The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11:00 a.m. The underlying causes of World War I were the spirit of intense nationalism that permeated Europe throughout the 19th and into the 20th Century, the political and economic rivalry among the nations, and the establishment and maintenance in Europe after 1871 of large armaments and of two hostile military alliances. The United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I when it passed concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926. In 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; the 83rd congress, at the urging of the veterans service organization, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word ‘’Armistice’’ and inserting in its place the word ‘’Veterans.’’ During World War II, African Americans were allowed to have weapons and fight. There were some individual acts of bravery in combat, but

blacks were considered inferior to whites, and as such were considered not fit for combat. At the end of World War II, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel into Soviet (North Korean) and U.S. (South Korean) zones of occupation. Relations between them became increasingly strained, and on June 25, 1950, North Korean forces invaded South Korea. On June 1, 1954, with the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) November 11th became a day to honor many American veterans of all wars. Although, in 1968 Congress passed legislation to move Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October and it became apparent that November 11th was historically significant to many Americans. So, in 1978 Congress reversed itself and returned the holiday to its traditional date. Later, that same year President Dwight Eisenhower established the Veterans Day National Committee and appointed the Administrator of Veteran Affairs to be the chairmen of the National Committee. Federal offices are closed on the day the holiday is observed. If it occurs over a weekend, then the offices are closed either Friday or Monday. Dwight Eisenhower was the one who integrated all branches of the armed forces. In 2001, the week of November 11th-17th was declared Awareness Week. It was designed to target

elementary and secondary schools and to create educational programs. At the present time, an armed force is the best place for the young minority to be because they can travel, get a good education, and have a good retirement. They can have a career and be successful and be happy to know that they’ve accomplished something great! We owe a special thanks to President Dwight D. Eisenhower who was one of the Generals of the army and who helped end the war. Everyone should remember and take part in a Veterans Day celebration every year to give thanks and express our own gratitude to those who have or to those who give of themselves to protect us and our way of life. We should let them know that we appreciate the sacrifices that they’ve made and are still making during their time of service. Many times these days, we take too many things for granted and we fail to recognize those that serve for us and express thanks. Our veterans need to know that what they fight for is worth putting their lives on the line for everyday.

PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE

W hat won’t you do now that you’re a Christian that you used to do before?

Matthew 5:8 tells us,” Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.” We can’t live like the heathens and pagans do and expect to go to heaven! We are a new creation in Christ Jesus, once we are born-again, according to 2 Corinthians 5:17. We must live above sin, 1 Corinthians 10:13, to please our God.

Each one of us must set Christian “limits, boundaries and borders” for our life! If we don’t set limits, boundaries and borders

that we will “never” cross… we will fall hard as we are told in Hebrews 6:4-6 (read). If we want to see Jesus in heaven we “must” set limits, boundaries and borders on our lives, according to promises in Matthew 7:13-14.

No one can set these limits for you; if they do, “you” will never keep them! Let me give you a few examples of why “you” have to draw a line in the sand that you “absolutely” refuse to cross”! Your church/ pastor: when you leave the church after Sunday services you won’t keep them. You will “not” feel obligated to! After church you will feel that you have done your “duty” and you can get back to your “real way” of living.

Home/spouse/kids: if someone(s) sets your limits, boundaries or borders at home, you will never keep them when you get away from home! Out of sight…out of mind! For instance, if you are hooked on internet gambling or pornography or online shopping… do you wait until your spouse is gone to get online? Do you wait to have a drink until your family goes to bed?

They can not set limits, boundaries and borders for you; you will end up breaking them and loosing your victory! I can not overemphasize… that good people get hooked on bad things and use excuses to justify themselves where there are not preset “personal” limits and boundaries!

What won’t you do?

This is serious business! The longer you go without setting personal limits, the more you are messing with your eternal destination. Please read and study Matthew 5:6, Hebrews 10:24-29, Hebrews 12:14 and, 1Peter 1:15-16 for detail.

Every Christian “must” set personal limits, boundaries and borders for their own peace,

faith and safety! Limits that they refuse to cross under any circumstances! Limits that will ensure holiness and sanctification and heaven!

What won’t you do?

Why don’t you make your eternal decision right now…all you have to do is say this prayer ~ “I am convinced by God’s Word that I am a sinner. I believe that Jesus Christ died for sinners, shed His blood to take away my sins, was buried and rose from the dead. I now receive Him as my personal Lord and Savior and will by His help, confess Him before men. In Jesus’ Name, AMEN!

A pplying the word failure regarding college planning may seem harsh, especially since more than 2 million

American students apply and enter college every year.

Unfortunately, the statistics don’t end there.

Although the percentages vary depending on which study/survey you see, the numbers are all quite depressing:

• 44% of college students don’t graduate in six years while pursuing a four-year degree

• 33% drop out or transfer to a different school after the first year

• Average student debt ranges from $27,000 to $38,000

• Individual debt often spikes to over $50,000

• Student loan default is on the rise (no surprise)

• This does not include parental debt that funds a child’s college education

• Numbers are even more depressing for students who have attended many of the for profit universities

And this is likely to get worse as college costs increase (our database shows more than 90 schools with a total cost of attendance over $50,000 per year).

We struggle with the fact that families don’t seek professional help with regard to college search, planning, and funding. Out comes the old adage:

Fail to plan and you plan to failSo why do families (parents in particular) seem to wear blindfolds regarding college

education? We are certain you will have your own theories, and here are two elements we feel are crucial:

• The local school trap

• The daily noise

The local school trap is simply that once the child goes into the primary school, the process through to middle school and high school is pretty much laid out. Homework, tests, exams and school-based activities are, to a large degree, predetermined.

College, on the other hand, is a major step into a completely different universe. Your child is leaving home, a major move towards independence and true adulthood. As parents, do we sometimes have the tendency to hide our heads in the sand regarding this event?

In defense of parents, note that colleges market (yes, market is the appropriate word) directly to students. This often means that parents are left out of the loop, at least until the issue of paying for college rears its ugly head.

The term daily noise refers simply to the activity and information overload that

burdens many parents today, especially if both parents (and let’s not forget single parents) go out to work.

Recent studies show that our ability to take control of issues and to take smart decisions declines dramatically if we plow through the day without some rest and refueling.

So we should not be too surprised if parents really cannot effectively discuss a $100-200,000 plus outlay with their hormone bubbling child who is about to fly the coop.

Do we have a magic wand? Absolutely not! But we do recommend that parents take a reality check:

• Your child is approaching full adulthood, so it’s time to treat them and speak with them in that vein.

• Look hard at the money situation together with your student, ahead of time

• Don’t accept the so-called top 50/100 colleges propaganda. There are many excellent schools out there.

• Understand that there are crucial milestones on the road to college, and time management is essential.

• Last but not least, make the quest for college a team effort. Your family will be the richer for it.

EDUCATION

12 UNITY MAGAZINE www.OperationResources.org

BY RONNIE HOLT

I s the goal of our education system to prepare our children to enter the job market? Does our current system meet

those goals? An argument can be made that our education system fails to meet these goals and changes are dearly needed.

Our education system has become outdated and too expensive. From the time a child enters kindergarten, the learning process is to get them ready for college. In reality only a small percentage of students will ever attend a college or university. However, our system is to force every student to learn curricula that is required for college entry. We do this in an effort to be fair, so that all students have the same opportunities. What this has

really created is an unfair system that does not address the needs of the majority of our students.

Education must become tailored to the student’s needs. All students must be taught basic reading, writing and math skills, which should be accomplished before they reach high school. By the time a student reaches high school they should be tested to determine a track for continued education. Unfortunately our education system has stigmatized any form of education that does not include college. This is where the system is unfair as most students would be better off attending a trade school rather than being forced to take classes they are not capable of learning. Students who are not academically inclined should be diverted to schools that

teach them job skills. Aptitude tests should be used to determine a students natural abilities. The type of education a student receives should be based solely on testing.

In addition, our colleges and universities must also change. Even this education must become more like a trade school and be narrowly targeted to the career the student has elected. Students are graduating from colleges with degrees that do not prepare them for the job they will enter. Our college education system is so broad that it often takes five years to get a four-year degree. This is not necessary and entirely too costly for the student and the country. If a student attends college to become a doctor then teach them what they need to know to be a doctor. Broader areas of education that do not need to be learned to

OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM MUST CHANGE

UNITY MAGAZINE 13 www.OperationResources.org

perform the job skill should not be required. Surely half of the currently required classes could be eliminated if our education system was more narrowly tailored to the area of profession chosen by the student. The broad system we currently employ leads to students being saddled with thousands of dollars of debt. This would seem to put the emphasis on funding schools rather than teaching students. Students would be better prepared for the work force if the education system concentrated on the education they needed rather than the broad area of learning we have now.

An example of waste in higher education is the requirement to learn a second language. Learning a second language is a worthy part of either lower or higher education. However, students are required to take two years of language courses and a large majority cannot speak the language at the end. If the goal is to teach a second language, then our school system is failing miserably. What should be adopted is one of the commercially available

language software programs that teaches you to read and actually speak a language. If students were required to do this for one year, they would become proficient in speaking a second language and the goal would actually be met.

With the advent of the Internet the possibilities for teaching our students is endless. The need for brick and mortar schools will become obsolete. Parents will have more options than the current public school system. Schools, colleges and universities will have to adapt in order to exist. Preparing our students to enter the work force should be the goal. Parents can no longer afford the cost of tuition and it is criminal to saddle our students with thousands of dollars of debt before they even enter the work force.

Most job creation in this country is done by small businesses. A lot of very successful small business owners do not have college degrees and don’t consider having one to be a great

asset to them. Especially when the degree is not tailored to their business. If a college degree is going to be the student’s highest achievement on their resume, shouldn’t it be specific to the job they are seeking?

Change is coming whether our educators and government want it or not. We should embrace this change and make educating our children about preparing them for the job market.

In my career as a Police Captain for a mid-size Florida police department, I managed more than 70 employees. I also managed an IT department for the City I worked for. My wife and I own a successful small business that was started in 1991. I have reviewed hundreds of resumes over my career. My experience puts me in a unique position to know what an employer is looking for in a resume. I have used this knowledge to write A Guide to Getting a Job Interview to teach applicants how to get their resume noticed.
