sor Cancer Awareness FestvivalAngels of Reservation Cancer Awareness Festival held

last week in Donnas Altas Palmas location drew hun-dereds of persons to festivities.

Barbecue smoke filled the air as several groups partici-

pated in the cook-off event, music festival, and vendor dis-

plays to the delight of those who attended.

Tammy Ramos and Melinda Sauceda, event coordinators,were very happy to see the results. Our main purpose forthis event is to promote cancer awareness and to raise funds

to assist families who may be in need because of someone in

the family who suffers from cancer, says Melinda Sauceda,leader of the group, TheAngels of the Reservation. When

asked to tell us something about who this organization is,

Tammy Ramos, also a leader of the group, said, We are agroup of seven individuals who came together to organize

this event to raise funds to help us spread our wings and pro-

vide help for those in need.

The event went well. In addition to the cook-off competi-

tion, several bands provided the musical entertainment in the

Perez, Alamo, Texas, daughter of Carmen Perez and

Leroy Perez of Alamo, Texas. Miss Perez participated\

at the Angels of Reservation Cancer Awareness Festi-

val held recently.

What an event thanks to the Donna Hooks Fletcher

Museum and the coordinators. Elvira Tovar, like we say

ple will talk about for many weeks or even years. As as

my part was concerned, I had a lot of fun serving as the

MC for the event and learning that the people of Donna still love conjunto music

and remember their pioneers.

And speaking of history, the Donna Hooks Fletcher Museum and the City of

Donna will commemorate and honor a musical family that has been and icon in

conjunto music in South Texas - la familia Montes, of the late Mario Montes. As

a matter of fact, the Museum will host a night of celebration honoring Los Don-

nenos de Mario Y Ramiro now known as Los Donnenos de Ramiro Cavazos.All this will take place on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012., 4 pm at the Park. Several

bands will participate, Los Hermanos Ayala, (sons of the late Pedro Ayala) whose

name is also celebrated by the community, conjunto comedian Wally Gonzalez,the short-legged Texan and several other musical groups. Its going to lots of

fun. Hope to see you. By the way, the tv show, Acordeones de Tejas TV Showwill be televising the event. Y a bailar todos!

Where to Eat A Good Breakfast Taco - Y Ya Me dio Hambre!

I get great homestyle tacos at Macs on FM 493 north close to mile 9. I also ex-

perienced some good tasty tacos a small restaurant on Bus 83 near Val Varde

Road, a place called, Las Dos Marias. They make big, fresh tacos de chorizoand egg, bacon and egg, you name. They make it.

Then, lets not forget the corner stores, El Tigre or Valeros on the corners of Mainand Expressway and Salinas Blvd and Expressway. Quick, big and fresh tacos

with good coffee.

Or, you can always go the Dannys on the corner of Main and Bus 83. But then Lets

not forget the breakfast at Daisys next to the Donna Hooks Fletcher Museum. I ate thebest bacon and egg tacos in history there! And the coffee? MMM good. Don Panchitos

is also a great place to meet friends and eat a good home cooked style breakfast.

RNC or DNC Whos right?Well, both the Republican and Democratic conventions have been held and I cannot for

the like of me predict or pick a winner. The problem is I don't believe either one! Whodo you think will win? Me? I think it will be difficult to beat President Obama! I could be

wrong. Only your votes can tell.

By D. N. EnglishThe origins of Halloween go back as far as 5 B.C.. The Celtic people who occupiedEurope divided the year into four major holidays. According to their calender, the ybegan on a day that corresponds with November 1 st on our present day calender. Thday also marked the beginning of winter, the time to move the cattle and sheep to acure pasture closer to home. It also meant the end of the harvest and a time of celebtion. The festival was called Samhain (pronounced Sah-ween) meaning the end of smer. It was believed that all the people that had died during the year would pass to tother side on this night. To aid in their journey, food was left out and bonfires were To keep spirits from seeing their homes the Celts would extinguish the home fires wear masks while heading for the bonfire. They believed the spirits were afraid of fires and would pass by. During the celebration many would also wear costumes aneveryone would dance around the fire and feast on fruits of the harvest. At the end the night each family would take a torch and light it from the bonfire to light their h

fire for added protection.

When the missionaries came, they labeled all the Celtic holidays as evil. Church hodays were purposely set to coincide with native holy days. All Saints Day was assigto November 1st the day set aside to honor all Christian Saints. The Celtics still celebrated with all Hollows Eve. The thought of the roaming dead was too strong. Thechurch then devised All Souls Day where the living would pray for the dead.

The bonfires continued to burn. It was on one such All Hallows Eve that a man of thchurch was passing by on a country road when on the hill he saw the bonfires burnHe saw people dancing around the fire in costumes with shafts and torches in hand

American Halloween traditions were influenced by the flood of immigrants during second half of the nineteenth century. These new immigrants, especially the ones frIreland, helped popularize the celebration of Halloween nationally. Taking from theIrish and English traditions, Americans began to dress in costumes and go house tohouse asking for food or money, a practice that eventually became today's "trick or

treat" tradition.

In the late 1800's there was a move in America to mold Halloween into a holiday mabout community and neighborhood "get-togethers," than about the supernatural. Aturn of the century, Halloween parties for both children and adults became the moscommon way to celebrate. In the 1920's and 30's Halloween became a secular but cmunity centered holiday which was celebrated with parades and town wide parties.

This year will feature the children of conjunto legendswho are following in their fathers conjunto tradition: Flavio Longoria and the ConjuntoKingz is the son of Valerio Longoria, Los Hermanos Jordan are the sons of Steve Jordan,and Ruben Vela Jr. is the son of Ruben Vela. The festival will also present the 2010Grammy Award Winning The Texmaniacs for their CD, Borders y Bailes. Los Monarcasand Bernardo y Sus Compadres will bring their smooth urban conjunto sound from Hous-ton, Texas. The Coastal Bend conjunto sound will showcase for the 1st time Boni Mauricio yLos Maximos as well as Cuatro Rosas.

Representing the conjunto sound of El Valle will be Herencia Cuatro, Los Gilitos, LosFantasmas, Los Dos Gilbertos, and Los Socios with Arturo Nino and great vocals of Tony

l Hormigon Torres. Representing the youth of conjunto will be the San Benito HighSchool Conjunto Estrella and Pete Anzaldua, the Texas Folklife Resources BIGSQUEEZE winner.

We dedicate this festival to our fallen Conjunto pioneers Amadeo Flores, Lionel Pulido,and Cali Carranza.Come and enjoy three days of live music by 15 of the best Texas Mexican Conjuntos. The festive sounds and smell of bbq filled the air at Donnas City SquarePark as several hundred persons and vendors attended the Saturday afternoon,

Donna Hooks Fletcher Museums Music Festival and a tribute to Los Donne-

nos held at the City of Donnas City Square Park.The Donna High School JROTC open the ceremonies with the presentation

of the color guard and pledge of allegiance followed by City of Donna Council-

woman Irene Munoz who said the invocation.

Lupe Saenz of the tv program, Acordeones de Tejas TV Show served asmaster of ceremonies. Saenz introduce all the dignitaries and officials present.

Oscar Adame, Sr. presented a brief talk on his knowledge and experience about

Los Donnenos. Rachel Loman, Museum Board President, read a brief history

of the contributions to conjunto music by Los Donnenos de Mario Y Ramiro.

A presentation of awards and certificates followed the family of the late

Donneno Mario Montes was introduced. Ramiro Cavazos, honored guest,and member of the original Los Donnenos was also recognized.

Also recognized and represented was Gilberto Lopez, Deacon at the Sacred

Heart Catholic Church of Edinburg, who is an original founder and formermember of the conjunto Los Dos Gilbertos and of his former conjunto, ElConjunto de Gilberto Lopez.

Elvira Tovar of the Tourist Information and Museum, coordinated the event

and insured that all went well with the activity, said, We are happy that somany vendors participated with us to make this event, not just a show but an

event for the whole community get involved in something wholesome for the

whole family. In addition, I thank the JROTC, the Ayalas, especially Emilio

who got the band here along with the setting of the instruments all on a volun-

teer basis. I also thank Wally Gonzalez for putting that special show that the

whole public got to enjoy and laugh a little while enjoying the music.

Also, thanks to the City of Donna for providing the chairs and tables so that the

people had a place to sit and enjoy the event.
