CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK 2017 April 30th—May 5th

Walking Forward Together

“Do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God.” – Micah 6:8 “Accomplis la justice, aime la bonté et marche humblement avec ton Dieu.” – Michée 6,8

This year’s Catholic Education Week theme is, “Walking Forward Together.”

The 2017 CEW theme and its five sub-themes are drawn from three contemporary Catholic documents

that address the need for reconciliation and renewal – in our lives, with our families, in our relationships

with others and in our relationship with our environment and our common global future.

The first is the 2016 response of the Canadian Catholic Bishops to the Truth & Reconciliation Commission

that we need to heal past injustices by “Walking Forward Together.” The second is the 2015 encyclical,

Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home by Pope Francis, that emphasizes the cultural roots of our

ecological problems and advocates an urgent world collaboration for the care of our common global

home. The third document, Amoris Laetitia: The Joy of Love is a 2016 Apostolic Exhortation by Pope

Francis, which applauds our dedication and concern shown to children, families, migrants, the poor, the

elderly, and to persons with special needs, as a sign of the Spirit. These supportive relationships are a

test of our commitment to show mercy in welcoming others and to help the vulnerable, to be fully a part

of our communities.

Our CEW biblical quote, “Do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8),

acknowledges the important role of justice and solidarity with our Indigenous peoples, our environment,

the poor and marginalized, and all those who work to protect our common global future.

There are five sub-themes for each day of Catholic Education Week:

Day 1: Walking Forward Together with God

Aller de l’avant avec Dieu

Day 2: Walking Forward Together with Our Families

Aller de l’avant avec nos familles

Day 3: Walking Forward Together with Others

Aller de l’avant avec les autres

Day 4: Walking Forward Together with Creation

Aller de l’avant avec la Création

Day 5: Walking Forward Together in Hope

Aller de l’avant dans l’espérance

Every year, the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association (OCSTA) provides our Catholic schools with

a resource kit to help schools prepare for Catholic Education Week. Using these resources as well as our

own developed activities, we have prepared a series of activities which will highlight how our school is

‘Walking Forward Together.’

We hope to see many of you during our school celebrations.

Looking for Volunteers:

During the past several years, the Dirven family has taken care of the flower beds in front of the school. Our school has always looked so beautiful for our families and visitors. The Dirven children have moved on to high school. We are looking for a family or a group of families who would be wil-ling to come a few times a year to look after the flower beds. If you are interested please call the school.

Merci beaucoup!

DRESS CODE

As the warmer weather approaches please review the school dress code with your child:

Our school is a Catholic community and we require our students to dress in a fashion that

represents the respect and dignity of the individual. We are a place of learning and as such

have an understanding that what we wear portrays our purpose. Clothing must be functional,

modest and clean.

Students are expected to wear clothing that will overlap when standing and sitting and must cover undergarments.

Open back, tube/tank tops, spaghetti straps and muscle shirts are not permitted by themselves or under other

clothing. Sleeveless tops with a shoulder band of at least the width of three fingers are acceptable. Shorts, skirts,

skorts and dresses are expected to be of a modest

length (width of wearer’s hand at knee). T-shirts with suggestive slogans or those offensive to Christian values are

not permitted. It is recommended that all pupils’ necklaces and neck wear (i.e. chokers, chains, whistle straps, neck-

key chain holders etc.) are to be constructed of breakaway materials, or preferably not worn at all.

(Recommendation by the jury at the Coroner’s Inquest of the Myles Neuts fatality in 1998.)

Before students leave the school premises for a special activity or an excursion, the teacher will inform the students

and their parents of the appropriate dress required e. g. white shirts, black pants for a Music Festival etc. We show

we care, by dressing in a manner which is appropriate for our school setting

Proper Footwear

Students are allowed to wear sandals and flip flops indoors, however, outdoor shoes must have backs on

them. Proper footwear is required for gym time activities indoors and outdoors.

Let us remember in prayer

Betty Voisin and John Wilkin

Grandmother to Alexie Reid and Jasmine Voisin,

Uncle to Teo and Saskia Remers,

“Gracious God, loving Creator,

welcome Betty and John into paradise.

In your love, lead them into the unending

joys of your presence

where every tear will be wiped away,

and there will be no more sorrow.

Amen.”

May 1st – May 7th, 2017

For 7 days in 2017, students and their families are challenged to Turn Off The Screens (TVs, computers and video games) except for homework. See how much fun your family has without TV. Each student will receive a log-sheet to be signed by a parent for turning off the screens and getting active

The 3 Grey Bruce schools with the greatest percentage of log sheets returned will receive a mounted plaque for display in their school.

Turn Off The Screens! Get Up and Get Moving!

Go to www.publichealthgreybruce.on.ca and click on the Turn Off the Screens in the “Active Living” section for further information or to download your log sheet. Call Jason Weppler, Grey Bruce Health Unit, for more information at 519-376-9420 ext. 1408.

Let us remember in prayer:

Daylan Hopcraft Death is nothing at all. I have only

slipped away into the next room. I am

I, and you are you. Whatever we

were to each other that we still are.

Call me by my old familiar name,

speak to me in the easy way which you always used.

Put no difference in your tone, wear no forced air of

solemnity or sorrow.

Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we

enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for

me. Let my name be ever the household word that it

always was, let it be spoken without effect, without

the trace of shadow on it. Life means all that it ever

meant. It is the same as it ever was. Why should I

be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am

waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very

near, just around the corner. Amen.

CONGRATULATIONS !

Marianna Labriola and Layne Grubb

The Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board will honour students at an “Applause Breakfast” in Chesley on May 1st. Two students from each school in our Board were selected. Layne and Marianna demonstrate the virtues of our Catholic Faith on a regular basis, and are a true blessing to our school community. They were chosen based on their ability to act as role models, their respect for our Faith, our school and our community and their many ongoing small acts of kindness.

“We are a Catholic Faith Community committed to developing and maintaining a love of life long learning, nurturing self-esteem and respect for all creation.”

Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board “Proclaiming the Work of Your Love” -
