The President of the National Association of AutomobileManufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA), Dr Johanvan Zyl, warned that prolonged industrial action whichhad paralysed the operations at the seven major vehiclemanufacturingplants inSouthAfrica, had entereda crit-

ical phase and had also had a negative cascade effect throughoutthe automotive manufacturing and supply chain in South Africa.

The manufacturers affected include BMW South Africa, FordMotor Company SA, General Motors South Africa, Mercedes-BenzSouth Africa, Nissan South Africa, Toyota SA Motors andVolkswagen Group SA.“The vehicle and automotive component manufacturing

industry, including exports, accounted for approximately 30% ofSouth Africa’s manufacturing output and about 4,5% of thecountry’s gross domestic product, whilst the broader SouthAfricanmotor industry, including retail/distribution/servicing andrepairs, accounted for 7,5% of South Africa’s GDP,” said Dr VanZyl.“The strike will result in lower economic growth, lower domestic

and export production and sales, reduced industry profitability,substantial loss of income to workers, loss of revenue to the fiscus,lower foreign direct investment into South Africa and ultimatelyless employment.“There are no winners in a strike situation in the vehicle manu-

facturing industry which provides stable employment with, bySouth African standards, attractive and high quality employmentconditions, remuneration levels and benefits”.Dr Van Zyl continued to say that the double digit offer by employ-

ers is reasonable and highly competitive compared to settlementsin other sectors and in relation to inflation. The industry is not justofferingaveryhighacross theboard (ATB) increasebut alsoa trans-port allowance, increase in shift allowance and short time allow-ance. The workers will also receive a cash allowance coupled to anadditional across the board increase to equalise wages in the indus-try.“This offer from the Auto Motor Industry amounts to a total in-

crease of more than 30% over the three year period and is the bestever offered in the history of collective bargaining in the industry”.“We urge NUMSA to continue with their effort to bring the strike

to an end andworkers to accept our settlement offer.We are lookingforward to a speedy return by all of our employees to work.”

creating 20 000 jobs over the next 20 years.With youth unemployment approaching50% in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro ac-cording to 2011 Census data, three entrepre-neurs, Elaine Camoetie, Yusuf Moses andRamon Thomas have decided to take up thechallenge to create local employment oppor-tunities.“Since the merge of the municipalities 10years ago there’s beenagrowing resentmentamong the people ofUitenhage.Most of theirfrustration is because economic develop-

ment is skewed towards Port Elizabeth,”said Ramon Thomas, an entrepreneur andresearch analyst at NETucation.“Uitenhage has produced many talentedpeople like Bala Brothers from Kwa-Nobuhle, Deshun Deysel, the first blackwoman to summit Mount Everest andEnoch Sontonga the composer of NkosiSikelel’ iAfrika. However, it is not knownfor its entrepreneurs and the Hub seeks tochange that.”According to Thomas, a recent online sur-vey indicated 60% of respondents agreedtheir biggest challenge remains unemploy-

ment.Thiswas followedcloselyby 40%iden-tifying high cost of electricity as a major ob-stacle.Elaine Camoetie, a single mother and co-founder of Uitenhage Business Hub said;“Many students after graduating relocate toGauteng or Cape Town to find employmentand opportunities that are not available inNelson Mandela Bay Metro.“Most of those who leave Uitenhage neverreturn and therefore economic growth iseither flat or declining in real terms.“High unemployment is likely to rein-force apathy, increase crime, teenage preg-

nancy, drug and alcohol abuse,” saidThomas, who relocated back to Uitenhageafter 15 years in Johannesburg.“Entrepreneurship teaches you to takeresponsibility for creating your own future,your own opportunities, before expectinganything in return.”The Uitenhage Business Hub will providecompany registrations, business plan devel-opment, low-cost shared office space, and in-ternet literacy training. In an effort to stop the “out-of-control”dumping of waste by residents at the15 closed waste drop-off sites andtemporary skips inDespatch andUiten-hage, the municipality has issued astern warning that offenders might befined.In a notice published by the NelsonMandela Bay Municipality, it is saidthat the Waste Management Sub-directorate has closed these sites as aresult of “circumstances beyond itscontrol.”According to Councillor Pieter Ter-blanche, these sites have been closedsince the contract for the removal of thebins expired at the end of June 2013Residents are requested to take theirwaste to the Koedoeskloof disposal site.The operating hours are Mondays toSaturdays 07:30-17:00 and Sundays09:00-17:00.In the notice it is urged that residentsshould refrain from dumpingwaste “onany land or road other than a licensedsite approved by the municipality.”

The donation of a wheelchair hasopened a new world for JannieKruger from Uitenhage, as he cannow be more mobile to visit friendsand family and even accompany hiswife to shopping malls.

Kruger was one of the benefici-aries from the Wednesday Wheel-chair 2013 campaign organised bythe Association of the PhysicallyDisabled (APD) in conjunction withSpar EC Group. The community wasinvited to nominate disabled personswho are in need of a wheelchair.

Uitenhage Lions Club nominatedthree persons which includedKruger.

“I am very thankful towards theLions for making it possible to nowown a wheelchair. I was diagnosedwith muscular atrophy, a diseasewhich results in a progressive disin-tegrating of muscles in my legs andarms,” said Jannie Kruger.

Subsequent to his retirement in1994 his movements are restricted tonot more than 20 metres with a cane.

Denis Murphy from the UitenhageLions Club said; “The degenerationof the disease limited his externalmovement. He also feared peoplewould accidentally knock him off hisfeet when using a cane.

“This wheelchair has providedhim with a new lease on life,” saidMurphy.

The Uitenhage Lions Club Presi-dent, Barend Erasmus, wishes tothank APD and all sponsors forimproving the quality of life ofJannie and the other nominees whoalso received wheelchairs.

As a result of circumstances beyond its control, the Waste ManagementSub-directorate unfortunately had to close the following waste drop-off sitesand temporary skip sites as an interim and temporary measure:
