MayorDannyJordaanhasrecommitted themu-nicipality to fight water leaks.
Jordaan was speaking at the launch of Presi-dent Jacob Zuma’sWar on Leaks campaign lastFriday, with over 16 000 people in attendance atDan Qeqe Stadium in Zwide.Jordaan said he, together with Zuma and the
minister of water and sanitation Nomvula Ma-konyana, had visited a house in Zwide where a
familyowedR70000 inmunicipalwaterbillsdueto leakages.“Wehave just been to a housewhere they told
us that their water bill is just over R70 000. Weknow that that poor family can never pay thatmoney. That bill is not the result of water usedduring the month but rather water that is leak-ing during the month. In a sense, that bill is areflectionof the inabilityof themetro to respondto water leaks.“Wethenexpect thepeople to sufferasaresult
and to pay for the inefficiency of the metro. We
must apologise to the people that we are unableto respond to these challenges. That is a matterthat we will take up. We are endorsing and sup-porting and recommitting the metro to fightagainst water leaks,” said Jordaan.According to the municipal financial indica-
tors, thisyear’swater losses cost themetroR300-million and the country R7 billion a year.Zuma said through the Department of Water
and Sanitation, they would train 15 000 artisansand plumbers who will fix leaking taps in theircommunitieswithRandWater, asgovernment’s
implementing agent.Zuma said the project would be run through
a three-phased approach, identified for the re-cruitment, training and deployment of theplumbers, artisans and water agents over theproject period. Zumasaid theywould trainqual-ifying young people with Grade 12 or N3 withMaths and Science as fitters and turners, weld-ers, instrumentmechanicsandelectricians.Thelearners, who will be drawn from all nine prov-inces, will do repairs, retrofitting and replace-ments in various municipalities.

The ShoreBreak, a documentaryabout the proposed titaniummine and tolled highway on theWildCoast, has garnered a seriesof top awards since it premieredat IDFA in Amsterdam earlierthis year.Awards of this documentary
directed by Ryley Grunenwald, and co-produced with OdetteGeldenhuys, now include theBest Feature LengthDocumenta-ry at the 2015 International Envi-ronmental Film Festival (FIFE)in Paris, the Backsberg Audi-ence Choice Award from En-counters, the Amnesty Interna-tional Durban Human RightsAward and the overall AudienceAward fromDIFF, and anomina-tion for Best Documentary at Sil-werskermfees in Camps Bay.Described by the jurors of the
Amnesty International DurbanHuman Rights Award as a “pow-erful portrayal of a strugglewith-in a local community regardingforeign mining rights in a pris-tine environment,” (it) “concise-ly and movingly uncovers thiscomplex and urgent matter, which is still under investiga-tion and in need of public sup-
port.”“We are delighted about these
accolades.“Not only for ourselves but for
the fact that these issues are be-ing highlighted and the commu-nity’s challenges are made visi-ble to an external environmentother than the one in which theyexist,” say Grunenwald andGeldenhuys. It is for this reason the two
have made a decision to releasethe film as a DVD and on the Vid-eo on Demand platform Vimeo,as part of an endeavour to high-light the issues at play to a broad-er audience. From tomorrow, the film will
be distributed via direct sale ofDVDs in South Africa viawww.theshorebreakmovie.comfor R100 for individuals andR1000 for organisations, institu-tions and associations who re-quire a wider range of screeningrights.

Khumbula is an African adventure storyabout a boy and his friends who were kid-napped by game poachers and their struggleto survive.
This movie will be shown at the ChristianCinema in Despatch on Sunday, 19:00, at AGS
Despatch, 1 De Lange Street. The boy, Jamie, visits his father James on
a game farm which constantly struggles withpoachers and the safety of the animals aretheir main concern.
A camping expedition for boy scouts has Ja-mie all caught up in the excitement of friends
and fun in the bushveld. The excitement fadeshowever, when they are accidentally left be-hind in the bush.
They run into game poachers, who in turnkidnap the boys to prevent them from callingthe authorities. Jamie escapes. Alone in thebush, his survival depends on the lessons his
dad taught him. James’ determination to findthe boys and get them home safely might beall that stands between them and tragedy.

MSC Business College Uitenhage openedits doors in 2003 and takes pride in over adecade of quality further education to stu-dents in the region. Many ex-students fromMSC Uitenhage currently work in success-ful positions and attribute much of their suc-cess to the personal, hands-on care that MSCBusiness College offers its students.

Strengthen your commitment to childrenthrough dignity, harmony and humanity.
“These wise words are very much in linewith International Lions President Dr Jitsu-hiro Yamada who is encouraging Lions tobring dignity to others by assisting vulnera-ble children in communities and throughoutthe world,” said District Governor BokkieOberholzer of District 410D.Aperfect exampleof achieving this commit-
ment is when Community Development Initi-atives International (CDII) situated in Preto-ria and its We MiND Foundation (Despatch)was gifted a donation of linen by Town LodgeMenlo Park (Pretoria).CDII decided to collaborate with both the
Pretoria South and Uitenhage Lion Clubs tomake the donation available to impoverished
communities within Mamelodi (Pretoria)and to the StCuthbert’s Mission to Childrenaffected by HIV/AIDS.“The St Cuthbert’s Mission serves a Com-
munitywhere the breadwinners have died asa result of HIV/AIDS and orphaned childrenare left in the care of grandparents or oldersiblings. They work in conjunction withchurches inKwazakhele andGovanMbeki inthe Nelson Mandela Metropole,” said LionDenis Murphy from the Uitenhage LionsClub.“We as the Uitenhage Lions Club extend
our sincere appreciation formaking all of theabove possible to Town Lodge Menlo Park(Pretoria), CDII and itsWeMiNDFoundationAmbassador David Viljoen who is also asso-ciated with Friends of MND (Motor NeuronDisease),” said Lion President Juan Hay.

One of the things all human beings have incommon is the fact that none of us are goingto live forever. It’s not a comfortable thought at any age,
but it can be even more stressful as we ap-proach our later years, and are faced with therealities of planning for the day we’re nolonger around.Theocharis says sometimes, instead of
holding on to an old property, you should re-lax and enjoy your golden years.“It’s difficult, and family homes can have
huge sentimental value, but when a propertyno longer suits your needs, and you can’t keepup with the necessary maintenance and up-dates, holding on to it is a lose-lose situationfor everyone.”
For many people, the focus of these yearsbecomes about protecting the legacy theywillleave behind; the savings and investmentsthat will be their last gift to the family theyspent their lives nurturing. This is according toEliaTheocharis, a sales
agent for the Rawson Property Group’s Con-stantia franchise, who says, sadly, this oftencomes at the expense of their own quality oflife and, ironically, can have the opposite ofthe desired effect on their assets – especiallywhen it comes to property.“Unless it’s held by a trust, property is not
an easy asset to deal with as part of an estate,”he says.“Youcan’t divideup thebricks of aproperty
betweenmultiple heirs, and you also can’t ac-
curately predict its future value to use as partof an equitable distribution plan.”Speaking from experience, Theocharis
said, “I do a lot ofmarket-related property val-uations and it’s heart-breakinghowmanyeld-erly couples I meet who, instead of enjoyingtheir golden years, are sitting struggling tomaintain these huge, empty houseswhich arefalling into disrepair anyway.”He says they’re sacrificing their own quali-
ty of life to hang on to a property, that theirheirs often don’t even want, as they’ve settledabroad, and they are unintentionally decreas-ing its value by doing so.According to Theocharis, even properties
in good condition lose value rapidly whenthey no longer conform to area standards,
particularly in prestige areas. That meansfalling 10 or 15 years behind the times canhave a huge effect on your home’s value, butwho wants to renovate at the age of 80?“It’s difficult, and family homes can have
huge sentimental value, but when a propertyno longer suits your needs, and you can’t keepup with the necessary maintenance and up-dates, holding on to it is a lose-lose situationfor everyone.”He says the same thing applieswhen a prop-
erty investment portfolio causes more nega-tive stress and admin than the positive valueof the income it generates.“You have to be objective about when it’s
time to let go.”Theocharis advises to make the call when
the market is good, and while your propertyis still in good repair.“You’ll be able to sell at higher price than
if youallowyourproperty to degrade, andyoucan invest the money in a more liquid asset, that will still earn good returns, provide cashflow in case of an emergency, and still bemuch easier to divide fairly amongst yourheirswhenyour timeeventually comes,” saysTheocharis.“Best of all, you can relax and enjoy your
golden years, and give your family a far moreimportant gift than inheritance: your time.”-Property24-

The popularity of one of the largest charitysocial sports events on the Eastern Capesporting calendar, the Nelson Mandela BayUrban Run, is growing gauging by the num-ber of entries having already been receivedahead of the event on the lastweekend of Sep-tember.The NelsonMandela Bay Urban Run, host-
ed by the MBDA to highlight urban renewalin the CBD, has enjoyed significant growthon the social calendar, not only providing afun obstacle race for children and adults butalso offering a great spectacle which drawsthousands to the city centre on race weekendand it’s great to see an increasing number ofparticipants in “fancy dress” who are in-spired to dress up in costumes as unwieldyas the course itself. With just under 2 000 participants expected
to ‘Tackle the City’ for charity over theweek-end 26th and 27th September any notion thatthis is only for runners is quickly forgivenwhen one witnesses the large number of par-ticipants in fancy dress costumes rangingfrom superheroes to fully kitted out fire-men.To further encourage this, the organis-ers have secured cash prizes for the bestdressed groups with R3,000 up for grabs inthe adult race and R1,000 cash in the kids’race.“The Urban Run is not a race to determine
the fastest athlete in town, it is an event thatis funand suitable for people of all ages.” says
race organiser Mike Zoetmulder, “It offersparticipants the urban feel of the city whilsttaking them to places within the CBD theyprobably haven’t been to before andmost im-portantly it is an event that tries to make amassive difference to the communitythrough funds raised for the nominates char-ities that represent those with bigger chal-lenges in life. Whether completing the obsta-cle course in 30 minutes or 3 hours, the realdifference is made by the donations whichare raised and the legacy this unique eventhas on the city.”Zoetmulder encourages participants to
take advantage of the discounted entry feesof R150 for adults and R100 for children asthese will be increasing from the 1st Septem-ber.As is the tradition and culture of theUrban
Run, all participants are also required toraise a minimum of R100 for Cheshire Home(adult race) and Reach for a Dream (kidsrace) in a fun initiative which is rewardedwith 4different levels of goodybags and start-ing batches.Entries into the event are limited to ensure
maximum enjoyment for all the participantsthrough the numerous obstacles and entrieswill close as soon as the quota has beenreached. Online entries and further informa-tion available on www.UrbanRun.co.za withmanual entries possible at Caltex Toby’s Mo-tors in 8th Avenue Walmer.
