Uitenhage Police urge residents toreport any criminal or suspiciousactivity regarding the so-called“Uitenhage Four”who are allegedly
knocking on residents’ doors and then eitherrob or assault them.
Police spokespersonW/OGerda Swart saidthat they are aware of the rumours regardingthe Uitenhage Four, but no incidents whatso-ever have to date (Tuesday, February 16th)been reported to the Uitenhage police.
According toW/O Swart, the police can notinvestigate any allegations or open up crimi-nal cases unless residents report them to thepolice.“A charge has to be laid before police can
commence with any investigations,” said W/O Swart.The UD News last week posted a warning
on Facebook which was received via Whats-App regarding the scammers. It reads as fol-lows, “There are two white men and a ladywalking the streets. The lady will knock onthe door and indicate that she would like toaddress youandyour family on flu and cancer
and requests you to let her enter your home.As you allow her to enter, she keeps the dooropen allowing the two men to enter. Thishappened, in the Uitenhage area close toDaniel Pienaar to a friend.”On theUDNews|NuusFacebook page, vari-
ous readers commented on the post sayingthat there actually are two men and twofemales and that they have been to theirhomes.According to some readers the female with
the blonde hair goes by the name of “Elmie”.Most readers have said the people have not
hurt or threatened them in anyway, but were
insistent in trying to sell a product called“Aquazone”.“No murders, no robberies have been
reported andno cases have been opened at thepolice station. People should refrain frompanicking,” said W/O Swart.Monty Montgomery, Operational Manager
at Atlas Security said the public should notallow any strangers into their properties.

A mediterranean themed restaurant and cof-fee shop in Uitenhage has added a differentspice to its menu. Also on offer is the delightof viewing works of art from two well-knownEastern Cape artists.
Paintings from artists Tertius van Huys-steen and Llise Dodd will be exhibited on apermanent basis at Saffron restaurant,72 Cannon Street.Owners James and Olwen Carson met
Tertius and Llise a few years ago when thetwo artists organised an Art Safari in Uiten-
hage. At the end of last year they offered theartists, who together run a pop-up art gallery,a room in Saffron to exhibit some of theirworks on a permanent basis.“Saffron is now the mooring place for our
works between exhibitions. We can swop theart whenwe need it for other exhibitions andwecanalsouse thevenue for exhibiting otherartists work when we need all our work forexhibitions,” said Tertius van Huyssteen.James Carson has a doctorate in chemistry
and as Saffron’s chef he is always experi-menting with magical flavours.“Now there is a room filled with colour for

According to police spokespersonW/O Gerda Swart, incidents were re-ported in which cards were stolenfrom the rightful owners and cashwithdrawals were made without theowners’ consent.
Therefore make sure to abide by
the following safety hints when at anATM:
VAvoid isolated ATMs or usingthem late at night or early in themorning. Select an ATM in well-lit,busy areas.
VIf you feel unsafe at an ATM oryou are suspicious of individuals loi-tering in the vicinity, trust your in-stincts. Use another ATM.
VNever accept help from strangersat an ATM.
VDon’t be distracted, intimidated,or hurried into your transaction.
VNever force your card into thecard slot.
VDon’t move away from the ma-chine before you have called the cardstop number and made a note of the
reference provided by the bank.VEnsure that your own card is re-
turned after the transaction.VBe watchful of people following
you after you have withdrawn yourmoney.
VIf you suspect that you are beingfollowed, get yourself to the nearestpolice station.

The South African National Blood Service iscurrently experiencing a national bloodshortage and is relying on the public to openup their veins to alleviate the pressure on pa-tients and their families.
According to Maryke Harris, Public Rela-tions Practitioner at the South African Na-tional Blood Service, “a ‘cut-back system’have been imposed nationally, where fewerunits are issued compared with what doctorsordered, in order to spread products to all pa-tients in need. Blood is moved around the
country to where the need is the greatest.”The South African National Blood Service
(SANBS) invites all healthy people, betweenthe ages of 16 and 65 years, who weigh 50kgor more and lead a safe lifestyle, to displaytheir compassion by donating blood.“Blood is essential for treating accident
victims, cancer patients after chemotherapy,surgery patients, burn wound victims andmany others, and the only source is fromblood donors. There is no artificial substitutefor all the benefits donated blood provides,”said Harris.

It is time for the annual Bay Area MusicAwards (BAMA) which was initiatedfive years ago as an arts development
program.
The project’s primary objective is to stim-ulate and encouragedevelopment, aswell ascreate synergy among the different role-players in the music, arts and entertain-ment industry in the Nelson Mandela Bay.Since the first red carpet awards ceremo-
ny hosted in June 2011, the event has beensupported by capacity audiences.Participating in this year’s event in the
category for gospel singers will be Carmeli-ta Rossouw from Uitenhage.She started her singing career at the age
of 16 as a member of the Lighthouse Chris-tian Centre choir in Cape Town.“I also had the wonderful opportunity to
sing in the back-up choir for internationalgospel artists like Alvin Slaughter and Lar-nell Harris,” said Carmelita Rossouw.During 1996 an album was recorded for
Cape Town artist Jeffrey Tiemie with Car-
melita as a back-up singer. During 2006 shemoved toUitenhage and started singing duetstogether with Mark Fortuin and also joinedthe group The Elimites.She recently decided to continue her sing-
ing career by going solo.“The 2015 edition aims at reaching artists
throughout theNelsonMandelaBayMetro in-cluding areas we previously couldn’t reachowing to a lack of resources, like KwaNobuh-le, Despatch and Uitenhage,” said AshtonPrince, BAMA Project Coordinator.The project pays tribute to current and past
artists and role-players of up to twenty differ-ent categories and each year includes an hon-orary award category for individuals whomade a significant contribution to the indus-try for example Mr Shakes (2012) and JazzLegend Errol Cuddumbey (2013).“Another first for the project will be the
hosting of six different music festivalsthroughout 2015 and the rollout of a metroschools edition artist search,” said Prince.
