The Basson twin brothers made the cutafter qualifying at the SANationalAquat-
ic Championships in Durban last month.
“The selection was a very exciting momentfor both of us. Knowing that all your hardwork and sacrifices are paying off is an amaz-ing feeling,” said Alard.The siblings who hail from Uitenhage, said
that participating against the best in theworld would give them the opportunity tobenchmark their progress.“I have been training well and I’m eager to
see what I can do when I’m up against thebest,” said Alaric.He will participate in the 50m, 100m and
200m butterfly events, while Alaric will takepart in the breaststroke events. The twinssaid they were expecting a high performancestandard and fast times from their rivals.“Going into the tournament I amaware that
it will be challenging but I will learn a lotabout racing and international competition,”said Alard.“I am aiming to swim my personal best so
I can make myself and my country proud,”added his brother.Although it will be the first time that the
19-year-olds will be competing at the studentgames, it is not the first time that they willbe representing their country. They partici-pated in the Fina World Junior SwimmingChampionships in Dubai in 2013 and last yeartravelled to Botswana for the Youth African
Championships.“Wearing the green and gold has always
been my dream since I started swimming, soachieving this is an emotional experience forme,” said Alard.“It’s always humbling to know that people
look up to you for your achievements and see
you as a representative of the country,” com-mented Alaric.The first-year building students have been
putting in long hours in the water and gymin the run-up to the competition in a bid forperformances that will catch the eye of select-ors for next year’s Olympic Games in Rio.
“We both agree that mental preparation isalso of the utmost importance to ensuremaxi-mum success though,” said Alard.“It’s very easy to lose focus when every day
is a routine of achingmuscles and earlymorn-ings. But you have to focus on a positive atti-tude.”

The Uitenhage Community Policing Forumin conjunction with the local police intend tohost an open day highlighting the differentcareers to choose from in the safety and secu-rity sectors.
According to Lilly de Jong from the Uiten-hage CPF, they want to create the opportuni-ty for interaction between learners or stu-dents and the men and women in uniform.The sectors present include the South Afri-can Police Service, Community Policing Fo-rum, Fire Department, Air Force, NationalDefence Force, ambulance service, traffic de-partment, K9 Dog Unit and the SAPS airwing.
“The young ones should understand whatthe jobs entail and what a privilege it could
be to join the forces who put their lives onthe line every day and night, so that we allcan be assured that you and your loved onesare safe,” said Lilly de Jong.
Some of the activities planned for the ca-reer open day include: K9 police dog show,fire brigade engines, police helicopter, armydrill for children, crime scene: spot the differ-ence, get your fingerprints taken, police onhorse back and find the “skollie” treasurehunt.
“With this open day we want to give theyouth proper guidance, advice, informationand exposure regarding the public serviceproviders,” said De Jong.

new born babies to collect 30 pack diapersfrom the plant which is situated at the CapeRoad Industrial Park, just across the Niven’sBridge on the right hand side of the road.According to Ferdi Kilian, administrations
manager at Strong Chains Wholesalers, theyrecently installed a brand new state-of-the-artdiaper manufacturing machine.“As part of the installation process, tests
were done before the actual production of dia-pers commenced. It was decided to manufac-ture diapers for newborns as a test run,” saidKilian.Therefore the manufacturer has a large
stock of diapers for newborns which theywant to hand out to mothers of new born ba-bies. Mothers have to submit their identitybooks as well as the birth certificate of thechild. Diapers will be given free of charge to
individuals only and not to organisations.“Without these documents no one will re-
ceive a free diaper pack. You must also callpersonally. Somebody else cannot collect onyour behalf. We will hand out one pack permonth for threemonths only and babies olderthan three months do not qualify.”
)Free diapers for newborns can be collect-ed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdaysbetween 10:00 and 12:00 as from today.

South Africa’s new vehicle sales continued todecline in May, according to the latest data
from the National Association of AutomobileManufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa).
A total of 47 868 new vehicles were sold lastmonth, representing a 3.2% decline, year-on-year.
“Over the last fewmonths we’ve seen a risein the overall cost of mobility. Fuel priceshave increased 18% since the start of the yearas a result of a weaker rand, and the Reserve
Bankhaswarnedof interest ratehikes in thecoming months,” said Rudolf Mahoney,HeadofResearchatWesBank. “Factors suchas these will continue to affect consumerconfidence and put household budgets un-der even more pressure. For many consum-ers buying a new car may not be a priorityin the immediate future.”
New vehicle price inflation (VPI) is cur-
rently at 7.6% (TransUnion Auto) and con-tinues to outpace consumer price inflation(CPI), which is currently at 4.5%. This ismainly as a result of the continued weaken-ing of the rand, as well as low consumer andbusiness confidence levels, as indicated bythe FNB Bureau of Economic Research(BER) and RMB BER confidence indices.(-WesBank-)

Whom do we hold responsible for load-shedding damage when enough becomesenough?With all due respect, the government
should take full responsibility for the in-convenience and costs that we the publicare suffering as a result of the regular, cur-rent bout of load-shedding.Replacing and repairing of damaged
goods becomes a very costly sacrifice,which we the consumers have to bearwhen our electrical appliances breakdown, food supplies rot, orwhen schedulesneed to be changed. Who pays for theselosses such as appliances that become
faulty, food that goes off?Why print schedules when they are not
promptly adhered to. We go out of our wayto try to accommodate the planning, butare then subjected to switch-off times thatdo not correspond with the schedules giv-en. Poor people are suffering because theycannot affordback-up to this energy crises.As if to add salt to a wound, it seems that

Algoa Toyota Uitenhage received the cov-eted Toyota Presidents Award as Dealer-
ship of the Year in the category for small deal-erships, meaning they are the best in theircategory from all the 193 Toyota dealershipsacross South Africa.
According to Calvin Parry, Dealer Princi-pal atAlgoaToyotaUitenhage,more thanhalfof the Toyota dealerships in the country arecategorised as small. This is a result of thebrand being popular especially in the coun-tryside.
“What makes this award excellent is thatyou have to score a minimum of 95% whenit comes to customer experience.Adealershipmight have full marks in all the other sec-tions, but if customers are not satisfied, thereis no way that you can be a winner,” said
