“Come and see for yourself what theconditions are at our restaurant. Youare most welcome, we have an opendoor policy and our food is good.”
So said Terance de Jager, owner of Guido’sRestaurant in Uitenhage. His statement fol-lows recent newspaper reports resulting insocial media gossiping and an array of e-mailsbeing sent regarding municipal hygiene re-ports done during 2012 at more than 350 foodoutlets in the Nelson Mandela Bay.
“Inspections and hygiene reports are doneon a regular basis by both environmentalhealth practitioners from the municipalityand our franchise group. This is normal pro-cedure at our kind of business as these re-ports assist us in complying with hygiene andother standards.
“We were listed among ‘shocking hygieneviolations’ for a report to attend to leaky taps,soap and hand towels at handbasins and toupdate pest control reports as we had recent-ly moved to our new premises – these matterswere attended to promptly after that inspec-tion.
“A health department certificate of compli-ance was issued shortly after the sensationseeking article comfirming that we were un-fairly labelled by irresponsible reporting.Even though the invitation to the editor tovisit was declined and the apology in the fol-lowing edition went unnoticed unfortunatelymuch damage has been done.”
According to De Jager, Guido’s Uitenhageand Despatch take-aways will continue tostrive to provide the community with an ex-cellent standard in food and hygiene thatmakes them proud of being local.
Another food outlet which received mis-leading bad publicity is Geyer’s Butchery atDespatch.
“It was totally inappropriate and unreason-able to publish the reports as in our case itwas two minor offences which were rectifiedalmost immediately,” said Fanie Terblanche.
The report stated that the sales assistantdid not wear her “mobcap” and jackets of twoblockmen were lying in a bag on a cupboardin the backroom of the butchery.
“The public’s e-mails and comments on Fa-cebook that followed the newspaper reportwere extremely disturbing and far from thetruth. Visit our butchery and see for yourself;we adhere to all criteria of the health law.”

Vandals have pushedthe heavy historic How-itzer field gunoff its ped-estal at the MOTH Gar-den of Remembrance inRich Street, Uitenhage.“OurDugout has been
bombarded by vandals.They have broken thewindows and stolen anold machine gun andbayonets.“We found the gun in
nearby bushes, but thebayonets are gone,” saidMOTH member TomFerreira.“Now this field gun of
approximately 6 tonshas been pushed off itspedestal.”The Howitzer dates
back from World War Iand is one of only five ofits kind field guns im-ported to South Africa.

ge,will discuss issues relating to economicde-velopment and investment opportunities inthe Eastern Cape and in particular NelsonMandela Bay Metropolitan area. The focuswill be on employment and investment oppor-tunities.“There are many exciting and bold initia-
tives that are currently being implemented orto be implemented. These include among oth-er things the $10 billion Mthombo project atthe Coega IDZ, relocation of the manganesetanks, waterfront development, public worksprojects and public transport plans to namea few.“In this evening’s meeting MEC Jonas will

Families Against Drugs or better known asFAD, recently celebrated its first anniversa-ry.It is a support system and fellowship to
families who are affected by a loved one orloved ones who unfortunately became ad-dicted to drugs or alcohol.“This unfortunate behavior often hap-
pens not through the addicted’s own choice
but through reasons beyond their control,”said Fahmy Abrahams from FAD.Family support group meetings are held
every Tuesday at theUitenhageHigh Schoolin Dower Avenue at 19:30.On the same evening and time a separate
group meeting is held at the school with a12 stepmeeting, convened byGertWilliams,on Fridays. FAD is also affiliated to
FAD Port ElizabethA sports day will be held on the 15th

al Cansa Relay for Life and each year weredeclared the winners not only for completingthe most laps, but for also collecting the mostmoney.CansaRelay forLife is a funovernight relay
event which aims to unite cancer survivorsand the communities that care about them.Teams consist of 15 members walking aroundthe track in a 24 hour period as “cancer nei-ther slumbers nor sleeps.”“It has been a pleasure and honour to be
part of this and to be the captain of theMuiriteStriders team,” said Orgia Nell from MuiriteStriders Amateur Athletics Club in Uitenha-ge.According to her, this year also marked the

The Uitenhage Bowling Club ladies team re-cently won their section in the Womens AllCape Lawn Bowls competition which washeld in the Southern Cape region.
