Welcome back Circle K’ers!!!
I hope everyone enjoyed their break from school. Because you know us Circle K’ers, Study hard and
Serve hard! Just because we were on break doesn’t mean we didn’t serve. This past break we were
able to help out with our annual service project “Go West”. It was amazing how Circle K’ers were able
to come together at a vital time to save the Rose Float Parade. This year the coordinators were in need
of volunteers and Circle K saved the year!!! I want to say that almost all the floats were done by our
Kiwanis family. It makes me so proud to watch on television to see our accomplishments rolling down
Colorado Blvd, Pasadena.
Like said before, Circle K’ers never sleep when it comes to serving the world. Some exciting events that I
am looking forward to are K-Rock!!!, District Large Scale Service Project and District Conventionnnn!!! If
you guys haven’t heard about K-rock yet, then you are in for a surprise. This benefit concert is our 4th
annual with brand new performances from our campus to stars all across California. Our District large
Scale Service Project (DLSSP) will be held in Saaannn Diegoooo. This event is soo big that it’s going to be
a weekend of events. This will allow all of you to serve with Circle K’ers all across California, Nevada and
Hawaii. And last but not least, DISTRICT CONVENTION!!!! This is our end of the Circle K year big bang.
There will be plenty of workshops, spirit and Circle K Love!!!
Also keep in mind that the Circle K year is about to end, and officer positions will be available for YOU to
take on. Be sure to talk to your officers if you have the slightest curiosity about a position. This will give
you the opportunity to develop your leadership skills and network among the Kiwanis family. If you are
interested in a district position, please contact me about any questions you have and I will get back to
you in a timely matter.
If ever need anything please feel free to contact me.
I hope to hear and see you all soon!!!

Tutoring at Longfellow Elementary (Service) Mondays & Thursdays (4:30 – 6:00 PM, Rides depart from A&I Horseshoe at 4:15 PM) Each week, Circle K at UCR volunteers to help elementary school students with homework as a part of Longfellow’s afterschool program. Students from all grade levels attend, ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade. Their homework varies from math and language arts worksheets, social studies and science questions to reading and spelling, and others. The students love seeing familiar faces each week as you become not only their tutor, but a mentor and role model.
Soup Kitchen (Service) Wednesdays (5:00 – 7:00 PM, Rides depart from A&I Horseshoe at 4:45 PM) Every Wednesday, the First Congressional Church in Downtown Riverside opens its doors to serve a warm meal to over 200 guests. Not everyone is privileged with a meal on their table every day and these guests are certainly grateful for this event each week. Circle K at UCR volunteers to serve drinks, bread, salad, and desserts. We also stay after to help clean the tables, sweep the floors, wash dishes, and take out the trash. Without the volunteers, this event would not take place. Come serve at a wonderful event that provides a place of security and comfort to many.
Kiwanis Luncheon (Kiwanis Family) Thursdays (12:00 – 1:30 PM, Rides depart from A&I Horseshoe at 11:45 AM) Without the Kiwanis Club of Riverside, Circle K at UCR would not be able to exist. Kiwanis sponsors us and provides us guidance. They are our adult counterparts that, like us, also serve the community. This event that takes place every Thursday is their general meeting and there are amazing guest speakers each week with very informative presentations about the city, jobs opportunities, and much more. Come enjoy a complimentary lunch provided by our Kiwanians and learn about what the world has to offer. Dress code is business casual.
September 2010: Vincent Krupa. Vincent has
shown incredible dedication with helping with our
big Block Party fundraiser. Vincent continues to
show his dedication through his hard work and
effort to make sure set up & clean up run
smoothly and driving to events.
October 2010: Jimmy Lao. Not only has Jimmy Lao,
a recent transfer student and new member, been
attending weekly and weekend events, but he has
been coming to our board meetings as well. On top of
this, Jimmy also continuously aids us in different
areas. Particularly important recently, he has
volunteered to drive members to Fall Training
Conference in his car.
November 2010: Tiffany Por. Tiffany Por, a second
year and new member, is our November Member of
the Month. Although she is just starting out, she has
chaired several events - including a last minute one
during FTC when no one else was able to. During
our Service Insomnia, she chaired an additional two
and was also the member to acquire the most
service hours that weekend.
Fall Training Conference. The most anticipated event in the fall for UCR Circle K’ers.
Heading to FTC in Sonora, California takes ten hours, but the time goes by quickly when you start bonding
with the people in the car with you. Of course, it may sometimes take longer than that because of
unexpected car troubles or you may just end up getting lost simply trying to find this hidden town, but
that's all part of the Circle K adventure. As you head up the winding mountain road, the air is fresh and
clean and the sky above shines with millions of stars, something you would definitely not be able to see
in Riverside. As you approach the campsite, you see groups of people heading over to the cafeteria to
register or just mingling around the cabins and auditorium. The air outside is chilly, but the excitement is
palpable. After you finish registering, you head to your cabin and claim your bunk bed. FTC is notoriously
known for no sleep, and it's true. Most people fall asleep at two or three in the morning, and you usually
only get about four hours of sleep. Waking up in the morning and waiting in the breakfast line is when
the fun really begins. The cheers start, which inevitably get everyone pumped up for what’s to come. You
are assigned a group of people with whom you will be solving the mystery of the murder of the train
conductor, since this year’s FTC theme was Murder Mystery. After breakfast, you choose which
workshops you will attend. The workshops are filled with cheers and fun but there are also some that are
quite informative, especially if you want to be a board member. You get to meet an incredible amount of
new friends from all over California and other states, as well as your club Division. You see the first of the
mystery skits today, since your group has to make a decision on who the murderer is by the end of the
night. After dinner, we head over to the amphitheater to watch the skits from the individual schools. In
an FTC tradition, during or at the end of the skits, there was always a fun dance number. Fall Training
Conference was great fun and definitely worth the car trip. If you're looking to enhance your social and
leadership skills, or just have an all-around awesome time with other Circle K members, then FTC is an
event that you should definitely go to.

November 12, 2010 was a glamorous night for all UCR
Circle K’ers. It was a night of fun, food, laughter, games,
and service that awaited them inside the doors of John’s
Incredible Pizza. The new members began their journey,
after paying dues of course, outside of those doors,
mingling, and looking fabulous in their formal attire.
Once the doors opened, everyone scurried in, and fulfilled
the duty of helping our beloved club fundraiser. Armed
with their receipt and ready to go, new members, old
members, guests, and Steven Wang enjoyed exotic pizza
slices, different pastas, salads, fountain drinks, and
doughnut holes, yumm! Promptly at 7pm, our illustrious
president Jenny Cheung began what was a Fall Install full
of ice cream shout-outs, birthday frenzies, crazy
competitions, installation, and family bonding. After the
announcements, new members were excited to be placed
into their houses. The new members would be placed in
either Wario House lead by Jenny Cheung, Yoshi House
lead by Stephanie Rivera, Mario House lead by Ryan Lara,
Toad House Lead by Crista Cabahug, or Toadette House
lead by Elizabeth Huang. Each one would be called up,
receive a mysterious yellow box that contained the name
of their house, and then squeal in joy alongside their
house leader. Afterwards, It was Biggie/Minnie time, yes
the time where all the minnies (first time members) meet
their biggies (long term members). It was very touching to
see the bond and excitement each minnie and biggie
would make and had made in those moments. Then, it
was picture time! The talented one woman paparazzi lead
by Betty Chang got right to work in snapping pictures of
the houses, biggies, and minnies together. The night
ended with a house competition of who would collect the
most tickets. Congratulations to each and every single
new fall member. Let’s get ready to one up on service!
Frostbites Minnie & Biggie Social by Athena Motavvef
Imagine an array of dessert choices, from sorbets to sweet crepes. Next, picture the delicious toppings on the
crepes, the variety of colors in the sorbets, and the assortment of flavors in each. UCR Circle K members were able to
sample these sweets on Friday, October 22nd at the Frostbites Minnie and Biggie food social. The purpose of the
social was for the Biggies and Minnies to meet up and get to know each other better. The event was also a
fundraiser; 20% of the money they gave back was put towards waving the costs of Fall Training Conference. Overall,
the event seemed extremely successful. A good amount of people showed up, exemplified by the fact that we could
barely fit everyone inside the shop. In addition, everyone was friendly and anxious to meet each other.
Personally, I had a pleasurable time at the event. It was my first time ever really trying a crepe. My crepe consisted
of bananas and nutella, and it was amazingly mouth-watering. It was a little too mouth-watering in fact, as I almost
couldn’t finish it. Besides the scrumptious food, another great aspect of the event was meeting so many new people.
I had never met such a gigantic number of people in such a short amount of time. All the Biggies I had met that day
were extremely nice, and seemed really interested in getting to know all the Minnies. I was definitely happy to be a
part of Circle K on that day, and I’d like to thank Jackelyn Rivera for that. She did a really great job setting up this
wonderful event!
Trunk or Treat by Philip Nguyen It was an interesting afternoon at Riverside YMCA’s parking lot, as volunteers show off their Halloween spirit and transform their vehicles for the annual Trunk or Treat. The cars were decorated in ghastly fashion, with high hopes of luring in as many unsuspecting trick-or-treaters as they can. Baited with varieties of delectable confections, the creative attractions brought shrieks and laughs alike to whoever dares to take a piece. This year, Circle K arrived with over thirty helpers and managed to transform three cars into the creepiest candy bowls you have ever seen. Ryan Lara’s truckbed was renovated to accommodate a few buried “guests,” complete with fresh soil and gravestones. Susan Yang’s car was decked out with festive hand-drawn balloon ghosts and Halloween colored streamers. Kids of all ages happily filled their bags with candy from the cars without complaint – until they reached Steven Wang’s van. A dilapidated mini-van was transformed into a dark and creepy cavern, complete with a mysterious creature(s) lurking in the shadows. Trick-or-treaters were greeted by an eerie and strange hunchbacked man holding a lantern. He held out his hand, motioning people towards the bowl to take some candy. Throughout the night, onlookers were curious to see how a pint-sized bumblebee was able to enter and take candy without a hitch. Others were not as fortunate. One of the kids even went off about knowing our tricks, yet he still kept his distance (LOL). Eventually, all the cars were ravaged and the bowls were empty. The night was a success! Let’s hope we can do even better next year… although it’s hard to top Steven’s creepiness factor.
Trick or Treat for UNICEF!
Halloween is a holiday celebrated by children and adults in different ways. When we were younger, we would dress up
in costumes and go from door to door asking for candy. Then we start handing out candy to the little kids, but now we
do something a little different. On Halloween, instead of trick or treating for candy, we do it for UNICEF. UNICEF is an
organization that provides children with clean water and nutrition in other countries. It protects children from dying
from malnutrition and unsafe drinking water. So on this night, we go around a neighborhood asking for donations for
this charity. Every bit makes a difference. Just 7 cents can save a life by providing a child with oral rehydration salts.
So next year, when you go trick a treat, bring a UNICEF box with you, and help save lives. Or if you get change back
that just sits in your wallet or backpack, you can always donate to it at a Circle K meeting.
Masquerade Ball. The theme? Unmasking the Night. The
place? A ship called the Inspiration Hornblower in San
Diego, California. Masquerade ball, UC San Diego Circle
K's biggest event of the year, is a large fundraiser for the
Pediatric Trauma Prevention program (PTP) where they
raise tens of thousands of dollars each year. This year was
no different.
The drive to San Diego's bustling harbor was
mostly uneventful for the majority of us, and when I say
uneventful, I mean to say that one of our cars ended up in
Mexico. After their quick jaunt over the border, we all met
up on the pier, ready for the night and what would
become a night to remember. At approximately 12:30am,
after waiting in line for what seemed like an eternity,
boarding had started to take place, with us all going
through security (they were a bit brash, to be honest) and
onto the ship. The ship itself had 3 floors, an observation
deck, casino tables and karaoke on the second, and finally
a steaming hot dance floor on the 3rd. People dressed up
for the ball, and quite extravagantly as well. People were
scattered all over, some on the top deck, taking in the
views of the harbor and downtown San Diego, and others
on the lower decks playing cards or talking to their dates.
But the lower deck was where the action really took
place. It was the dance floor of course, with people
dancing, romantically or otherwise, and what the night
was about. Raffles took place throughout the night, with
people winning anything from amusement park tickets to
an iPod shuffle (one of our members, Priscilla Thai, won
that one!). All of those proceeds went towards PTP as
well. Nearing 3:30am the boat returned back to its dock
and we all departed and went to our respective meeting
places. Several hours pass, and we finally head home.
What we learned several days later was that UC San
Diego's Circle K raised an amazing $18,638.15 for PTP
after 1,131 hours of planning. A success I would say.
Consider the night; unmasked.

On the weekend of November 19-21, UCR Circle K put on its quarterly Service Insomnia, a
weekend of non-stop service! Our first event, where we made get-well cards for sick
children, started just after we returned from our Member of the Month dinner at Red
Robin.
At our subsequent events we wrote letters to soldiers, volunteered at the Spirit of the
Tribes 5K Run/Walk held on campus, made recycling containers, Super Mario dolls for PTP
(Pediatric Trauma Program), lanyards for breast cancer awareness, and baked goods for
soup kitchen. On Sunday afternoon, we put on out KICKS for Kids Dodgeball Tournament, in
which teams of five competed against each other for the win.
Unfortunately, the weather was not our best friend that weekend and we had to
cancel some events. Member Jason Hong said about Service Insomnia, “I thought it was
fun but I think the rain kind of messed things up.” Member Vincent Ng said his favorite
event was “making the lanyards because it was frustrating to point of giving up, but that
gave finishing one a sense of accomplishment.” Vice President of Administration Crista
Cabahug also said “My favorite event was the lanyard making.” Member Athena Motavvef
said her favorite event was “cardmaking for the sick children.” Not all members lost sleep
during this event, but those who did didn’t regret it, and everyone who attended had a
good overall experience. Vincent said “I didn’t lose much sleep because I could only attend
a few events due to school work” and “my overall experience is that it’s something that I
would have given more time if I could have because not only does it lead to many activities
that help many people, but you can have fun and earn many hours in just a few days.”
Athena said “I didn’t lose a lot of sleep over it because it was before my bedtime but it
was a lot of fun because I got to play with markers and crayons and gems and stickers
again and be a little kid and it was for a good cause. I would do it again.” Crista said “It was
definitely worth losing sleep over” and “It was fun to wake up to doing service and I had a
great time overall.” -By: Brian Lopez
Share Our Skills. Share Our Service. Share Our Strength
Jonathan Sinnot
As Service Insomnia Weekend for Fall Quarter 2010 comes to a close, all participating Circle K’ers find themselves enervated. Many members have stayed up all night partaking in service projects, to signify that “service never sleeps.”
Suddenly, members of Circle K find themselves invigorated. 6 teams of 5 meet up at the Riverside YMCA, preparing for battle. They meet up to duel in the most epic dodge ball tournament this side of the Mason-Dixon line: KICKS for Kids presents…Strength In Numbers. The tournament aimed to raise funds for Share Our Strength, which aims to end childhood hunger in the U.S. As teams Turbaconducks, Boo-yah!, Toadally Shmexy!, CH (Casey Hewson), MD, and Free Agents registered their teams to play in this tournament style face-off, spectators filled in the bleachers of the gymnasium. The first two teams line up on the baseline of the basketball court, anticipating the call. Once notified, the teams ran as fast as they can to the half court line to pick up dodge balls.
Spectators enjoyed some refreshments provided by an on-site snack bar ran by Fundraising Chair Ryan Vescera. The tourney was near the end, as the last two teams clashed head-to-head. Team Casey Hewson, led by Tiffany Estevez, Philip Ngyuen, Shawn Holloway Jr., Stephanie Rivera and Jackelyn Rivera, went up against Team MD, which was made up of Justin Dam, Kyle Higashida, Michael Vuong, Vivian Lam and William Duong.
After a close battle, Team Casey Hewson was crowned the victor, with Shawn Holloway Jr. being unanimously named Most Valuable Player. The spirit of the event lifted even the sleepiest Circle K members. Watching them compete with vigor and enthusiasm for such a great cause was rewarding. All of the teams efforts and spectators vivaciousness lead to a grand total of $88 raised for Share Our Strength. This was another prime example of how Circle K members share their services in order to raise funds and share them with noble fundraising initiatives.
Girl Scouts Believe in Girls Expo
By: Jason Hong
The Believe In Girls Girl Scout Expo took place on
\December 12th 2010 at the Palm Springs Convention
Center. Since this event was immediately after finals,
there was a good amount of people who attended the
event. The event was hosted by the Girl Scouts of San
Gorgonio and it featured dozens of vendors,
exhibitors, and booths to showcase different activities
for the hundreds of girl scouts from all over southern
California. The event also featured up and coming
television show stars from the Disney Channel and
Nickelodeon performing for the crowd while also
featuring other artists. Outside, there were fun
activities to keep attendees busy such as a rock
climbing wall, a jumper and a miniature petting zoo.
We volunteered at the event by providing security at
the door, both inside and outside, to keep everyone
safe as well as helping out with booths at the event.
Overall, the event was a success. Our volunteers had
a lot of fun helping and I’m sure that the people who
attended the event were pleased to have us there
volunteering and watching out for their scouts.
Longfellow Elementary Holiday Event
By Crista Cabahug
On December 17, the Kiwanis Club of Riverside
and UCR Circle K International paired up along with
many other volunteers to create holiday food boxes
for families at Longfellow Elementary school. We had
several boxes aligned as we all worked together to fill
them up with basic Holiday dinner necessities.
Donations we received to give them were canned food
items, juice boxes, cereal, and things of that sort. The
Kiwanis went out themselves and got each of the
families bags of beans, pasta, pasta sauce, and rice.
Not only did they supply varieties of dry food but they
also gave each family a whole chicken and a bag of
potatoes! One of my favorite things about this event
was that people of all generations were working
together for a good cause. There were children who
were still in grade school, UCR college students, and
Kiwanians. Despite the age gaps, we all still had the
same goal in helping out the families in need. Another
great thing about the event was passing out the boxes
to the families. Though it was raining when we were
distributing them, we still had a good turnout. The
families were so thankful and we seemed to have
made a big difference in their Holidays. This Holiday
event truly gave each of our volunteers one of the
best gifts of all; the gift of giving.
Rose Float Decorating with Kiwanis family Division 6 Pasadena, Ca
It was a very early and rainy morning, but somehow we all managed to be on time more
or less. We were fortunate enough to have a few members out from Vegas! First, we waited
in a tent for instruction and a few of us helped unload boxes for the snack stand. While
waiting we got to socialize with other volunteers ranging in age, as well as with other Kiwanis
family members like, the current Kiwanis Lt. Governor of Division 6, Paul Wilkinson. Then we
were given the rundown of the do’s and don’t’s. Next, we were taken to the huge warehouse
where several floats were being constructed. Everyone was very busy and focused and it was
quite noisy. We met our chief lead Ed and his assistant Jessica of the Rose Bowl float.
Martin, Crista, and I started off blending up flower petals, while the others either cut dried
flowers or began working directly on the float. Later, after flower cutting, I got the
opportunity to cover one of the giant roses on the Rose Bowl float in the flower shavings
we’d made earlier. It is so messy! By the end of the day my hands were covered in dried glue
and my clothes in flower dust. We worked with many different types of flowers and seeds,
even using cinnamon powder. Our Kiwanis were so sweet to provide snacks like water and Cliff
Bars for us. We had an amazingly fast DCM during our lunch break. We did our D.O. Be Quiet
Cheer as the ice breaker, which silenced the entire group surrounding us and ending in a roar
of clapping. <3 Overall, it rained all day and we worked from 8am – 5pm with the exclusion of
lunch and we ended the event with a Division 6 group picture. It was very rewarding to work
diligently all day and actually see progress and an artistic creation rather than some shabby
canvas and wire caging. Afterward, most of us went to Luigi Ortega’s. The food was good, the
conversation was better, and if you’re ever there, do press the button in the bathroom!
