HELLO UCR CIRCLE K! Can you believe this Circle K term is coming to an end!? Time flies when you spend it with such amazing people. Just want to let you all know that Circle K has made my time at UCR the best it can ever be and I would not have wanted it any other way. I was blessed to have been able to find the room for my first meeting. I don’t know how lost I would be now had I been lost that day. As a new member, like some of you are now, I saw the love and family veteran members had and I wanted to be a part of it. Getting involved as soon as I could, my first service project with Circle K at UCR was Soup Kitchen. It reminded me very much of how much I enjoyed helping and serving others. It is always a humbling experience when someone’s eyes light up simply for a cup of coffee or juice. Circle K gave me that opportunity and I’ve been continuously attending soup kitchen and other service projects ever since. More recently, I remember the amazing realization I had while attending another service event. Sometimes it feels like all these little things we do don’t make a big enough impact. Let me help you erase those feelings right now. Each week I went to tutoring at Longfellow Elementary and felt like the kids would just get their homework help, leave, and that’s the end of that. The event I attended that changed this feeling was the Holiday Event at Longfellow Elementary, where we were sorting food for the families. As I walked down the hall of the school, various students said “Hi” to me and mentioned that they remembered me from afterschool tutoring; to me, this was incredible. It confirmed for me that I actually have made an impact in the Riverside community. These students remembered me because I just because I was there to help them with a few math problems or tested them on their spelling words. It reminded me that no matter how small the gesture, it makes a difference. So for all those who have plenty more time to serve with Circle K, get involved; attend events, step up to leadership roles by chairing events and assisting your board. You will find that not only will you be servicing the community, but also find that you are an important piece in the bigger picture that is UCR Circle K. You will grow as independent individuals ready for life and have friends supporting you along the way, possibly forever. You all probably hear all of this an awful lot, but I truly hope you take my words into consideration. Trust me when I say that there are not enough words to express how much this club has done for me and it is the reason why I continue to give back. Thank you, UCR Circle K for this opportunity to serve in more ways than one. Promise me that you all will continue our mission to 1Up on Service in the years to come and I know I will be proud. “Live to serve, love to serve” Jenny Cheung

2010-2011 President

December 2010: Vincent Ng, a first year in Biochemistry, has been very involved in this past month, even during winter break. Not only did he attend many events, but he helped out with transportation to an event as well. His cute personality has made it easy to get along with and he has really shown his dedication through his involvement this month.

Edwin Marquez - Edwin has really shown the

fellowship aspect of Circle K. He always takes

the time to chat with fellow members and

actively participates in events.

Joyce Hsiao - Joyce is a very supportive, caring

Circle K member. She makes great efforts to

attend service projects and socials, which shows

her heart and dedication to this organization.

January 2010: Robert Agosto has been to many projects in the past month. He is friendly and kind to all he encounters and is a real pleasure to have in the club. He has been to many of events varying from Kiwanis Family related to service oriented to fundraising.

Yoshi Social by Stephanie Rivera

I was excited to meet the new members of my Yoshi family. It

was exciting because we had a good turnout. As the family

leader, it is rewarding when you see new faces at the events you

plan because then you know that all the time you spend planning

matters. I love meeting the future of this club because they are

eager to learn more about the club and want to become more

involved. At the social we had pizza, chips, soda, and we even

baked cookies. Everyone had a blast playing various board games

and Wii. We played a lot of the classics, like apples to apples, as

well as the infamous mafia. It was more than just board games

because you were able to compete and get to know one another

better. Also along with the board and video games Alex, one of

our members made really adorable duck cupcakes. They were

delicious and you can tell he along with others that helped him,

put a lot of hard work into them. It was a really fun night, even

people from other school came out to support UC riverside.

Thanks to all those that helped me out. Also, more Yoshi Socials

Coming Soon. My family is great, yay...YOSHI STARS!

Toadette Social by Steven Wang

I Love candy!!! You Love Candy!!! Candy for everyone one!! At the Toadette Social everyone had the chance to use their creativity to dip their choice of fruit or cracker in delicious melt chocolate or cheese. With every dip we all came back for more. Not only did we have fun filling our belly but we entertained ourselves with movies, video games, card games and tons of board games. The game that got everyone excited was Mafia. Not knowing who the killer was everyone made accusations on who might the killer be. Another group was playing Smash brothers on the Wii and boy were they competitive. The fierce battle between characters was endless. We all had plenty of fun interacting with one another. I would like to say that this was a successful event.

Restoration Day! By Ryan Lara

What better way to give back to your community than to do community

service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day! On this day UC Riverside Circle K

invaded the streets of Redlands as we helped out with the Martin

Luther King Jr. Day of Service – Oakmont Park Restoration Project. We

helped out by restoring a historic trail in the hills of Redlands. We made

trails more visible for walkers, moved rocks in order to divert water flow

during rainstorms, and helped clear the trail of weeds. It had to be the

hottest day in January, but it felt really good to make a genuine

difference in our local community. We sweat it out but our hard work

paid off! We made one of Redlands more historic trails accessible to

walkers and bike riders. In turn, this hopefully allows local residents to

become more active and encourage outdoor activities.

YMCA Service Project by Steven

Wang

Can you say Y-M-C-A?! It’s a party in here! We got to the Riverside YMCA early in the morning and assisted the staff members with whatever they needed. Afterwards we got free YMCA T-shirts. They looked sooo cool. Some of the t-shirts had small logos while others were gigantic. After receiving our shirts we pumped up our energy by playing some icebreakers such as bang bang, all in order to get us ready for our next task. Once we were pumped and ready, we headed out to Tyler mall and Riverside Plaza to do pass out flyers. After passing out all the flyers, we chilled around our respected areas until it was time to head back. Over all we had plenty of fun helping out our YMCA and hanging out as a group.

On January 13, 2011, ten men from all over Southern California congregated in one place,

Irvine, California for the first annual Mr. CKI. These ten men rehearsed for days to help raise

over a thousand dollars for UNICEF and to work for the ultimate goal of Mr. CKI. These men

shined while grooving to “It’s Raining Men,” they strutted their stuff in the swimsuit

competition, and showed off their flair in their performing their very own talent act. The

nervous contestants waited anxiously backstage for their shot to be judged by the

Kiwanians. After it was all said and done, Andy Nguyen from UC Irvine was crowned Mister

CKI.

However, that performance was just thrown together last minute. It took days of

rehearsal, where all the contestants gathered in the Crystal Cove Auditorium in the UC

Irvine student center. The group practiced vigorously for the opening number that was

choreograph by Michael Tung. During the breaks of rehearsal, contestants recorded their

interview questions and practiced their talent acts. As a fellow contestant, Mr. CKI was a

memorable event. It is a great way to establish a brotherhood with members from other

schools. Laughs and memories came with being part of the founding fathers of Mr. CKI.

Whoever wants memories and brotherhood and lots of laughs, I definitely recommend

being part of the Annual Mr. CKI.

CKI UCR's first Casino Night benefiting Share

Our Strength was a blast! Members were able to enjoy

Black Jack, Casual Poker and a Texas Hold'em

tournament. Members were able to turn their chips in

for raffle tickets! The most anticipated event of the

night was the raffle. Prizes consisted of purses, a

sports set, Startrek Scene it, a printer, a backpack and

many more prizes. One of our members won over

three prizes from the raffle. What was a big hit of the

night was the drinks, non-alcoholic of course. Pina

colada's and Mock Tails of all colors filled

room throughout the event. CKI's Casino

night raised over $435E for Share Our Strength. CKI

would like to thank everyone came out and helped

with the event. I hope everyone had a great time at

CKI's first Casino night and we hope we can bring it to

K-Rock and You Don’t Stop By: Jonathan Sinnot

Kids rock. Circle K spends a lot of time and energy participating in service projects and

raising funds for initiatives that aspire to ensure the future of our nation’s youth. This is a recount of one of those events.

On Saturday January 22, 2011, K-Rock was back for the 4th time. The night began to set in, and the decorations started to come together. The Barn started to fill in with wild animals, or Circle K’ers as you know them. Background music played overhead as my co-MC Krisnha Ganapathi introduced me as the event coordinator. It was time to pick up the mic. Three months in the making. Three acoustic acts. Four DJ’s. Two live bands. One night. It all came down to this. I started out by making sure everyone knew why Circle K puts on this benefit concert each year. K-Rock benefits Pediatric Trauma Prevention Program (PTP), which serves to educate families about safety precautions, to educate doctors on how to treat children that have been in traumatic accidents, and to provide hospitals with medical supplies to treat children.

Now it was time to introduce the first act. The opening act was acoustic guitarist Davis Truong from Rosemead, with special guest singer Twee Fam. She laid down beautiful medleys over Davis’s soulful acoustic sounds. After the conclusion of their set, co-MC Shawn Holloway introduced the winners of the first sets of raffle prizes. Next time was a 45-minute set of trance music from DJs Scott Massey, Duncan Francis and Matt Blomquist. They turned the venue into a rave, with everyone dancing to the beat.

It was time to bring out another acoustic act. Sean Patrick Lewis blessed the stage with his acoustic soul set, that brings in a splice of gospel and hip-hop. Event goers sat down and fixated on his rhymes and infectious rhythms, as if they were in a coffee shop listening to a scrappy young poet painting portraits with his words and visual expressions. Hijos de Calliso was up next, bringing with them a diverse set of instruments. From a set of congas, a ukulele and an accordion, the Eddie Valencia fronted group brought an eclectic mix of tones to The Barn, bringing people of all backgrounds together to vibe out.

It was time to kick off the main acts of K-Rock. DJ Geo, an Inland Empire renowned DJ, turned The Barn into Club Circle K, spinning a dope set of top charting hits infused with merengue and other Spanish-speaking musica. With spirits and energy levels high, it was time to fly high with Burgundy Skies. Stophe Malone belted out soulful vocals over funky riffs conducted Funky Frank Ilem, Nathan “Nate Dogg” Guze, Dorian Branch and Alfonso Olachea. With the crowd all funked out, it was time for the final act. Burbank resident and MoVal native Nathan Ray graced the stage with his astronomical presence. The multitalented acoustic guitarist sang original cuts and popular covers, hooking in the audience while they immersed themselves into the harmonious tones.

The 4th annual K-Rock benefit concert came to a close. The music may have stopped, but the fight to prevent pediatric trauma was invigorated as a result.

On January 28th, we had our Winter Installation at The Old Spaghetti Factory, an Italian restaurant found in downtown Riverside. New and old members united to watch our new members get inducted into our club. We started out with a delicious salad with warm sour dough bread that complimented it. For dinner we had chicken parmesan with pasta it was yummy. Now that our stomachs weren’t grumbling and they were satisfied we started the ceremony. We started out with introduction of guests and we had our Kiwanis advisor Lorrie Joseph-Sterling, the Desert Oasis Lt. G Steven Wang and Edwin the Foothill Lt. G attend. Later, we also had Cami Tam the Paradise Lt. G, Brett Butler the Metro Lt. G and we also have the honor to have our Governor Danny Ha attend. We presented all of our new members with handmade Parana flowers where it revealed their family. Most of the family leaders brought handmade presents for their newly inducted members. The new members were presented with a certificate and a pin letting them know that they were officially part of the club. Once the new members were presented with their awards, those who signed up for the mentor program, Biggies and Minnies, were assigned a personal Circle K mentor to guide them through the club as well as through school. Then finally we had our MRP award ceremony. Those who had reached Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum were awarded handmade Super Mario stars. The amount of stars each member received depended on the MRP level they have reached. For example, a member who reached Bronze MRP level received one star which they can pin on their club t-shirt and if they reached gold then they would receive three stars. New members as well as old members were acknowledged for their hard work and community service to the community of Riverside and around our California and Nevada. All in all we left with happy stomachs and happy faces.

Softball Tournament by Ryan Lara

It was time to determine which school in Cal-Nev-Ha could take

the gold in UC Riverside Circle K’s 1st Annual Softball

Tournament. This game took place at Sycamore Canyon Park

in Riverside, CA. There were many schools in attendance such

as University of Nevada Las Vegas, Nevada State College,

Pasadena City College, San Diego State, and College of

Southern Nevada. We had four full teams involved which had

members from each school. It was a tough tournament, but a

team consisting of San Diego State and UC Riverside Circle

Kers etched out a victory. However, the true winners of the

tournament were the people we saved though this fundraiser.

All proceeds from this event went towards the UNICEF Six-

Cents Initiative.

Key to College by Tony Chau

On January 22nd, some of our Circle K members took a trip down memory lane as we

visited Ramona High School for the Key Club DCM and Key to College. While we

were there we gave them a presentation about attending college. We talked about

common college myths, basics of student life, dorming vs commuting, and Circle K. It

was a great opportunity to share our experiences with the high school students and

we even showed them two of our cheers. To our surprise, one of the schools had

actually heard of our “Be Quiet” cheer before and they used it as inspiration for their

own “Be Quiet” cheer with different wording. While our presentation was not

comprehensive enough for them to fully understand everything there is about college,

we invited them to come shadow us at a future date. So in the upcoming days we will

hopefully be hosting some key clubbers on our campus for a fun day of touring the

campus, attending lecture with a student, and going to a circle k meeting.

Goodwin’s Citrus Explosion! By: Jenny Cheung On Wednesday, January 19th, Goodwin’s Organic Market held one of their Bi-Monthly Farmers Market events. This event featured a variety of fruits, desserts, and other novelties for their “Citrus Explosion” theme. Organic citrus fruits such as pomelos, tangelos, oranges, grapefruit, lemons, and more were sold at only $1.99 a pound. Desserts made from organic ingredients were also sold. There were samples of fruits and cakes cut up for attendees to try. Customers salvaged these items and visited with other vendors and even got to see beautiful horses. Children had a blast playing in the jumper and seeing the shiny red fire truck on display. UCR Circle K members volunteered to help sell produce, serve samples, set up, and clean up the event. Members enjoyed their time at the farmers market and got a taste of delicious, healthy food. Volunteering at the Farmers Market is now an ongoing service project occurring every first Saturday and third Wednesday of the month. Be on the look-out for details about Goodwin’s Farmers Market in future announcements.

Honestly, I joined Circle K Int. for fellowship. However, the foundation of Circle K is all three tenets: service, leadership, and fellowship. In my eyes, all three are closely interconnected. Although I joined to meet people and find a social environment where I belong, fellowship is merely a positive consequence of the other two tenets. What would Circle K be if it were only about people? Circle K has inspired me by setting out to better everyone. Fellowship is not possible without service. Service is the context in which we learn about one another. And truly learning together about the world, ourselves, and each other is what creates stronger deeper bonds that foster wholesome social support. Similarly, there would be no context without leadership. Circle K is amazing in that it cultivates imagination, delegation, compromise, and overall upstanding reasoning skills. Circle K encourages everyone to be a leader in some way. We have our leaders of our clubs, divisions, and districts, but even more so we have our leaders within that and overall we should see ourselves as leaders of our communities. Circle K, based on these three tenets, ignites my heart. Anxiety and all out fear are all too common feelings for me, but Circle K is that passion and courage it takes to overcome barriers whether they are personal or communal. The heart of fellowship gives me the support to make a difference through service and strive to be a leader and a better person so that I can be an integral part of our organization and community to perpetuate the benefits that Circle K generates.

I waited this long to take a step forward to be that leader that so many people believe I can be because I never wanted to disappoint our club. Seriously, with all my being I believe that Circle K deserves the best. Until recently I wasn’t sure I could give Circle K the time and effort it deserves. Even now, I’m really unsure if I’m the best choice. However, I certainly can offer my assistance and my heart. Circle K has without a doubt made a difference in me, and I wouldn’t mind a chance to make a difference in Circle K by offering my services and applying for this opportunity to learn how to be a better leader and a better person.

Sincerely, there are so many amazing people in Circle K that have me star struck. It seems unfathomable that one organization can hone so many reputable individuals. It’s the “Circle K gleam,” that is when you go to events (whether it be hard labor, creative projects, helping people with any service, a huge social, or one of those simple hang outs) and you realize how monumental this club is and the people that make it. And you think to yourself, “How can I shine like that?” The “gleam” is that ignition that makes you realize what you want to be, and it’s the support of Circle K that makes you realize that it’s not impossible to be a person with a big heart, give big hugs, give advice, do something new, and just make the world a brighter place.

Even though I am still unsure, and I worry that I’m still basking in the bright light of the Circle K gleam, I don’t want this feeling of passion to sour into regret. I know adding one more thing onto my work load will be difficult, but it’s something very different for me that will help me to grow and appreciate Circle K even more. My high school sophomore English teacher, whom I respect to the nth degree, looked at me with a stare that said, “Quit your complaining” (which I was), and solemnly stated to me, “If it isn’t hard, then you’re not learning.” It seems insignificant but this statement has stuck with me until now, when I think, “If only things were easier,” I ask myself, “If it were easier, would it be worth it?” Probably not, so I’m ready to make things harder and crazier, but better. I know I’ll need help, but that’s a component that truly is underlying all three tenets of Circle K. We’re here to help the world, our communities, our organization, and ourselves.

I first met Circle K at the Block Party. I was introduced to the

whole board at once (there were a lot of names to remember)

and they were so welcoming and sweet that I knew this was the

club for me. I have always wanted to be a part of something

during my years at UCR, but I could never find the right

organization until I found Circle K.

Thank you Circle K for making me feel a part of the family. <3
