Hey Adelphi Circle K! I hope you’ve all enjoyed your glorious 4 weeks off from

school to rest and rejuvenate your energy to do more service! The executive board has plan a great semester full of fun service and fellowship activities for all of you to take part in. This semester we will be focusing on babies!! What do you think of when you think of babies and Circle K? Yup! you guess it, the EliMiNaTe Project and March of Dimes, two of our international service partners! We also have the election of the 2012-2013 club officers soon, so for those who are interested in running for a position, get your speeches ready and I hope you the best of luck during the elections! On top of that the 50th Annual NYCKI District Convention and Circle K Service week are getting closer and closer! For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Kelly Chan, president of the Queens College Circle K, as well as the Marketing & Kiwanis Family Relations Chair for the NY District. My job is to educate members just like you about the other branches of our incredible organization. Every member should know that they are not only members of Circle K at their college’s but they are a part of the Kiwanis Family. The K-Family consists of elementary students in K-Kids, middle school students in Builders Club, high school students in Key Club, college students in Circle K, adults with disabilities in Aktion Club and all other adults in Kiwanis. Members of Kiwanis, Kiwanians, act as our parents; they support us in all of our endeavors whether it be by attending our events, helping out at events or financially. Now you may be wondering what binds us together. The answer to that is is our passion for service because every member in the K-Family, regardless of age or ability, all share that passion to make a difference and to give back to our home, school, and communities. As one club, we can do a lot but with unity, we can do even more. Take advantage of being part of the K-Family and reach out to a younger member of the K-Family. I know that there are many clubs in your area that are always ready to work with AUCKI. Did you know that there’s a really great Aktion Club in West Hempstead? Or that there is a K-Kid’s club in Franklin Square? I encourage all of you who have not yet worked with another branch of the K-Family to go do so before the year ends. Working with others is not only a great way to make a greater difference but a way to meet more people, therefore, it’s a double win!

Aktion Club as summarized earlier is a club for adults with disabilities. Adelphi Circle K works with West Hempstead Court Aktion Club a lot. We do mostly arts and craft projects with them, especially with the upcoming art show next month. On January 5th, we did tissue paper art where action club members used different colored tissue paper on waxed paper with glue to create their own individual works of art. Circle Ke’rs as well as Key Clubbers helped the Aktion Club members. When finished with the individual art, we teamed up to create a larger work of art together as a group. Helping out with Aktion club is a great experience because you get to work with people with disabilities as well two or more branches of the branches of the Kiwanis Family. So I highly suggest you go to an Aktion Club event because 1. You get a get a great experience and 2. You get to meet new people!

Service With Aktion Club

It was a beautiful and mild winter afternoon in the city that never sleeps. On January 4 2012, Circle K International hosted an ice skating event at The Rink at Bryant Park in New York City. The proceeds from the event went to Kamp Kiwanis, which is a camp funded by the New York District Kiwanis Foundation. Kamp Kiwanis allows underprivileged and disabled children the ability to have an amazing, unforgettable summer they've always wanted. The turnout was great; we had people from Binghamton, Albany, LIU Post, Queens College, and Columbia University. We even had some people fly in from California and Las Vegas, Nevada! It’s incredible how Circle K unites people from all over the country, let alone all over the world.

The rink was filled with a diverse group of people; from city dwellers looking for a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle, to the tourists who get to experience the magic of New York City like no other way possible. For most of the Circle K’ers, it was their first time ice-skating. Fortunately, we did not have a lot of falls. It was a lot of fun and it was a great way to reunite with friends and even meet new ones! Afterwards, we rode the subway to Chinatown for dinner at Joe’s Shanghai, which serves Shanghainese soup dumplings. These wonderful little dumplings are filled with pork or crab meat surrounded by a delicious meaty broth. We ordered about a dozen or so platters and sipped on fragrant jasmine tea. After having a delicious dinner, we stopped by Quickly’s for bubble tea and chatted about our lives and what we’ve been up to. Eventually, we went our separate ways and said our goodbyes. It was truly an unforgettable night filled with laughter, joy, friendship, and fellowship. I can’t wait until our next meet up!

This years DCON is a big deal for many reasons! First, you will be celebrating, along with the rest of the NYCKI District (past and present), the 50th District Convention! So grab your poodle skirts and bobby socks, because it is bound to be a rockin' good time! (Seriously thought, bring your poodle skirts, there will be a themed dance). While at DCON you will be able to meet great new people, participate in fellowship and service activities, attend workshops to prepare you for a leadership role in the 2012/2013 service year (whether it be as an officer, chair, mentor, or member), and you will have a hand in electing our District Officers for the next service year! The convention is a great learning experience and a ton of fun!
