GOALS
Hello Everyone!
My name is Isaac Buttke, and I'm proud to say that I am the President of UW-Madison's
chapter of Circle K International. We've had a great time as a club during the first
two months of my tenure, partaking in some fun service projects like cleaning the
Henry Vilas Zoo and making table decorations with the Aktion Club of Madison, while
also holding some social events such as our End-of-the-Year Cookout. I'm hoping we
can continue doing events like these over the summer and next year while also
making the meetings during the year more engaging and fun by incorporating
service projects and/or guest speakers to make things more enjoyable than they
already are. I'm going to work to implement these things while I'm at home in
Wausau over the summer so that we can have another great year as a club. I hope
everyone has a great summer, and I hope to see you all at the first meeting in
September!
Yours in Service,
President Isaac Buttke
Letter From The President
Happy 20th
Birthday
Isaac!
By: Maren Hjortnaes, UW Madison Club Secretary
If you know about Milwaukee, you probably know about the Bronz Fonz. If you
don’t, I highly suggest you go see him along with the gorgeous Milwaukee Riverwalk, just
like a bunch of people did on May 21st for the Best Buddies friendship walk.
I joined forces with the MSOE Circle K to volunteer at this great event. The walk was
a fully accessible 2 miles long and funds raised benefit Best Buddies International – the
world’s largest non-profit organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and
economic isolation of the 200 million people with intellectual and developmental
disabilities (IDD). They work to pair together “buddies” to help people with disabilities
form meaningful friendships with their peers and feel valued by society. Overall,
$66,433.03 was raised at the event, just short of the $70,000 goal.
Circle Kers and other kind souls helped direct people and traffic to the route,
cheered everyone on and petted a ton of really cute dogs. Everyone either had cowbells or
“Thundersticks” to help encourage walkers, and those directing traffic had stop signs. It
was a beautiful day which makes it an even better day for service, as well as free t-shirts
and lunch.

District Update
Hello Madison CKI’ers!
It’s hard to believe we are already two months into the new Circle K year. There’s a lot we’ve
accomplished already, but there is much more work to be done as well!
We recently gained three new additions to the district board. Evan Timmermann from UW-Milwaukee
boldly stepped up to serve as your District Secretary. Annabell Pedersen from UW-Eau Claire is now your
liaison to the K Family as your K Family Chair. And, your very own Michaela Gombar is your new Service
Chair. I am very happy to have such great individuals on my team, and I am confident in their ability to
serve you, the members.
Underway is planning for three awesome, fun-packed, and- dare I say, even educational, District Events.
The first is CKIx. CKIx is our end of the year convention with International. It is being held in Toronto,
Canada from June 22-26. You can read more about CKIx in my other article, “On to Toronto.”
Our next event is the Membership Education and Recruitment Program, or commonly called MERP. MERP
is a one day event where members of all levels of Circle K come together to learn more about our
organization, the K Family, how to recruit and retain members, how to have a successful Organizational
Fair, and much more. But more than that, it is a great opportunity to meet and hang out with members
from all over Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, and we are hoping to have a social event afterward. MERP
is going to be held at UW-Green Bay on Saturday, August 6. Join our Facebook event for more details.
Our final summer/fall event is the K Family Baseball Game (KFBG). KFBG is simply a day of fellowship. We
have members from every branch of the K Family from all over the state in attendance. The baseball
game is at Miller Park in Milwaukee, and the Brewers will take on the Reds at 1:10pm on Sunday, Sept. 25.
Even though the game seems far away, we need to have registration in by August 15. Feel free to invite
your friends, roommates, family, or anyone else who loves the Brewers. The cost is $20, 7 of which is
donated to Camp Wawbeek. We currently have $988/$3,500 so these donations will be huge toward
accomplishing our District donation goal.
We have a lot more fun things in store as we continue our year, and I would love to see all of you again
this summer. As always, feel free to reach out if you ever have any questions or concerns, or just want to
chat! Your lovely executive board will know how to reach me.
Yours in Service and WUM Love,
Kasey Hodges

HUNTER’S SOCIAL SEGMENT
I’m Hunter Reed and I am ecstatic to be your new Social Chair for the UW Madison chapter of Circle K this
upcoming year! All you need to know about me is that I’m a junior studying Communication Arts, I love
meeting cool new people/taking Snapchat selfies with them, my heart loves travel even though my bank
account doesn’t, I dress like a middle-aged dad most of the time and I use words like “tight” and “rad” un-
ironically.
I have a multitude of ideas on events to bring us closer together as an organization this year. Whether we’re
singing off-key karaoke, making some bomb s’mores at Picnic Point, taking time to chill out and enjoy the
Terrace, or simply studying together and trying not to fail our finals; we’ll have a good time no matter what
we’re doing! These events are going to be a great way for us to understand each other when we’re working as
a team and volunteering for the community. I’m super excited to get to know all of you and your
personalities come fall semester. Feel free to hit me up with suggestions for any events we can do as a group
that you are interested in; my email is [email protected]. Enjoy your summer, soak up the sun and I can’t wait
to see you all at the first meeting in September!
On To Toronto
What does poutine, 6:30am flights, serving the homeless, House of Delegates, and
thousands of CKI’ers have in common? CKIx of course! This year’s International
Convention is being held in Toronto, Canada from June 22-26.
Wisconsin-Upper Michigan (WUM) has 6 members and 3 Kiwanians attending the event
(that puts us at 90% of our attendance goal- Woo!) We have myself from UW-Whitewater, 2
members from UW-Stevens Point, a member from UW-Eau Claire, one member from
Michigan Tech, and Five from UW-Madison attending.
In Toronto we have a very full schedule. We will begin by spending a full day serving the
homeless in Toronto in various capacities and places. There is an estimated 5,000 people
living on the streets or in shelters in Toronto. I cannot imagine having to live on the streets
during winter in Canada (or anywhere really) so I am very excited for the opportunity to
help in any way. In addition to our day of service, Circle K Subregions were asked to bring
different packages of clothing to donate, such as underwear, socks, and hats. Hopefully
through our efforts we may reduce the number of people on the streets.
Next we have caucusing and elections. As you know, Five Yang is running for Subregion C
Trustee. We will spend time listening to him and many others speak and answer questions
about their visions for Circle K, specifically at the International level. Every club is allotted
two delegates for voting, so all of our attendees will get the opportunity to vote for our
International President, International Vice President, Subregion C Trustee, and bylaw
changes. It’s like at our own District Convention, but with tons more people.
Finally, we get to attend some workshops, watch the installation of the new board, and tour
beautiful Toronto. We are allowed to get dinner at various restaurants around Toronto all
week, so we will get the chance to eat, sight-see, and eat again!
I am very excited to spend a full week exploring all three of the CKI tenants with not just my
club, not just with my district, not even just with my subregion, but with CKI members all
over the world.
I can’t wait to tell you all about the experience once I’m home, but for now, I’m on to
Toronto!

Kiwanis One Day By: Michaela Gombar
Kiwanis One Day was Saturday April 16th at Henry Vilas Zoo. A big thanks to Five, Steph, Rachael,
Riley, and our advisor Rachel who came with us. The zoo has a Kiwanis garden that the local clubs
sponsor and work on yearly. We spent the morning raking leaves, gardening and spreading mulch in
that garden as well as other areas around the zoo. All these little things really help to jumpstart the
beginning of the work that the zoo needs to do to get ready for summer season. Afterwards, we
were able to walk around the zoo! (We really loved the red panda.) It was really cool to be able to
connect with the different groups there, such as the different Key Clubs and Circle K Clubs, as well as
members of the district board. I talked with a few Key Clubbers and it was really cool to give them
advice about college and high school. The Kiwanis One Day event is annual, so it would be really
cool to see a larger representation of our club there next year! I would also be open to investigating
more volunteering at the zoo, so please contact me at [email protected] if you are interested in
this!
Aktion Club
By: Five Yang
What is Circle K without that Kiwanis Family? We often hear about Kiwanis and Key Club, but how
much do we know about Aktion Club? Aktion Club is the branch of the Kiwanis for adults with
disabilities. However, Aktion Club is a very enthusiastic and excited group of individuals who are no
different than us. They are just as eager as we are to make a difference in the community. In the
Madison area we are very fortunate to have a club that is sponsored by the Madison East Kiwanis
Club.
On April 14, the Aktion Club invited the UW-Madison Circle K Club to attend one of their general
meetings and assist them with an arts and craft project. The meeting, which President Isaac Buttke
and Immediate-Past Governor Five attended, was very fun. It was filled with updates and many
great jokes. After they took care of their meeting business, Isaac and Five were asked to assist in
making table decorations for one of their upcoming fundraisers. They were able to use their coloring
and artistic skills from grade pre-school.
Overall, the meeting was very fun and exciting. They even invited us to attend their meetings again
in the fall when school is back in session and Circle K’ers are back on campus. So keep an ear out for
the next time we visit them. We hope you can join us!
