Principal’s Report Students will be given their reports to bring home on Friday this week. 3 Way
Interviews for you, your child and their teacher take place on Wednesday June 26.
Please make sure you have selected a time. The reports will also be available on
your Compass web page. Compass is a web based student management and
communication tool. Catherine Robertson has conducted three Compass briefing
sessions recently where parents were shown how to log-in and how to access the
parts open to parents. Your Compass log-in details are yours alone so keep the
details private and safe. Overall, if you are used to accessing sites via the web,
you will find Compass pretty easy. We will be slowly adding to the parent access
aspects over the next semester so log-in, have a play and if you have any
questions, ask your child’s teacher.
Recently we were audited for our compliance in Occupational Health and Safety.
One of the issues they raised was parent and student access through the car park.
We were told to restrict parent access to the carpark to parents of Kelly Club
students. We understand that some parents and children ride bikes. Can I please
ask for these to be wheeled by hand through the walk way as the car park is not
considered safe for riding through?
The Pedestrian Crossing Attendant on South Road has also asked me to remind
parents that they should be using the crossing to move safely across South Road.
Apparently some parents take the short cut and take their children directly across
South Road dodging traffic. Although an adult might be able to get across the
road without getting hit by a car, younger children who see this happening might
copy this dangerous behaviour with disastrous results. Unfortunately, the South
Road traffic is notoriously dangerous with speeding cars and aggressive driving a
feature.
The 2019 Parent Opinion Survey
The 2019 parent Opinion Survey will run from 22 July to 11 August 2019. The 2019 survey will be conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only takes 15 minutes to complete. The survey can be accessed via desktop computer, laptop, tablet or mobile at any convenient time within the fieldwork period from Monday 22 July to Sunday 11 August 2019. The school will select a random sample of parents and the log-in details will be sent to them. The Parent Opinion Survey seeks parent opinion on measures of school climate, student engagement and effective teaching practice known to influence student engagement and student outcomes. The survey is aligned with the Framework for Improving Student Outcomes and the Attitudes to School Survey. Schools use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.

your child. Not only will you have a printed copy of the school
report you will also have access to the reports using the
Compass app. By now, most of our families have signed into

Busting some common Maths myths!
Maths is a series of rules and procedures to follow
There are rules and procedures that make it useful to complete mathematical problems correctly. Yet, these are of
little use if carried out with little understanding of why they work. When you went to school, were you taught the
standard algorithm for working out long multiplication problems (e.g., 76 x 45)? Can you explain why it works? Do
you find yourself making statements such as ‘Put down the zero’, ‘Carry the one’?
BUSTED! Today, the teaching emphasis is on helping children understand the underlying mathematics. Children are to develop their own strategies for working out mathematics problems. Mathematics is so much more than a series of rules and procedures to follow. At its core, mathematics is about patterns. Mathematics is a set of ideas, connections, and relationships that we use to make sense of the world.
Maidstone Reading Club
We are lucky to have a fantastic opportunity open up for the
families of Dinjerra. Maidstone Community Centre will be
offering a new Reading Club and have invited Dinjerra
children to join. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child
to spend time reading with others within a group and with an
adult to support the improvement and enjoyment of their
reading. Afternoon tea will be provided and parents are
welcome. If you are interested in enrolling your child in the Reading Club please see Ms Naz or myself for
enrolment details.

4/6 Learning The grade 4/5/6s have been working hard in their learning in the past few weeks. We also had a thrilling incursion
about STEM that everyone enjoyed!
Interschool Sport
Last Friday, we played interschool sport against Corpus Christi PS. We played a pleasant and safe game. Both
netball teams won, however soccer and tee ball lost. We have one more game to go and we hope that at least
one of our teams win. Both grades have had a lot of fun so far and we can’t wait to see the other schools again in
Term 4!
STEM Incursion
On Thursday 13th of June we had an amazing incursion
about STEM (science, technology, engineering and
mathematics) with the West Gate Kids. We put on lab
coats and goggles and did exciting experiments
revolving around science and the periodic table. We
created electricity using a cool device and the metal or
water in things. We used foil and other materials to
conduct electricity. We also learnt about the tubes,
tunnels, wires and water used around the world. We
definitely had a lot of fun working with the West Gate
Kids.
Inquiry
In inquiry, we have been learning about Australian
history and how it impacted today's generation. We
have learnt about the Eureka Rebellion, The White
Australian Policy, The Stolen Generation, Aboriginal
people, women's right to vote and other important
moments in history. We created a timeline of important
dates that occurred in Australian history, are working on
a presentation to show our learning and we watched
videos on our chosen topic and wrote notes about it.

Police Buddies On Tuesday, our police buddies from Footscray Police station came to visit us here at Dinjerra. First we got to know
our buddies a little and then we had a competition of who could make the tallest tower using cards. We measured
how high they were and in the end Alice and her buddy won the competition with a 55cm tall tower! After that, we
went outside to the police cars and our police buddies gave us a tour around the inside. At the end of our session
we went back inside and had a nice lunch but then it was time for them to go. We had a lot of fun meeting our
police buddies!
“They were cool!” Aalliyah.
Maths
In Maths, we’ve been learning about time, 12 and 24-hour, and using timelines. We’ve also been using
analogue clocks to tell time and convert it to and from 12 and 24-hour time. We’ve also used Tripadvisor and
Journey Planner to see if we can plan and report flights using 24-hour time.
“I liked learning how to use 24-hour time and the maths games we did,” Cecil, 4/6W.
“I liked using and reporting plane flights,” Sanjiha, 4/6W.
Team Building in 2/3 C
In Team building we do sharing and we be thoughtful of
each other. We do it every Friday in the last hour and we
have an anchor chart on the door about how we need to
share and care for each other.
We all have fun and enjoy it, but if we don’t speak nicely or
share we get called to the floor and remember our anchor
chart. Some of our favourite activities are building with
blocks, playing downball safely, colouring in sheets, board
games and the big games from Miss Carla.

Congratulations to all the grade 4/5/6 students who have represented Dinjerra Primary in the Footscray District

Grade 4/5/6 students will be practising Basketball, Cricket and Newcombe skills and games in term 3 and will be
competing against schools in term 4.
