From The Principal Dear Parents/Caregivers It has been a great start to term with students showing how capable and responsible they can be when they put their mind to it. Next week is Science Week and we are having a hands-on incursion with Australian reptiles. Very excit-ing!! Fifteen students last week visited Footscray North PS to learn more skills in working within the Ultra-net—our students impressed a number of people! Impressive! Have the BEST fortnight Leanne Sheardown PRINCIPAL

Morning Tea with the Principal
On Thursday 28th July I met with a hungry group of students
that included Bianca, Jhayden,
Jessica, Vina, Martina and
Logan. They each brought
along some of their learning to
share with me. Jessica brought
along a beautiful picture of a
swan that she had painted and
the writing that she did about
it. She used very descriptive
words. Logan showed us his
spelling work that he was proud of as well as his colourful paint-
ing of birds in trees. Jhayden is a maths superstar and shared his
maths work with us. Martina, Bianca and Vina all wanted to
show their Writer’s Notebook. Martina loves her Writer’s Note-
book and shared that she loves writing and art. Bianca read out
her Top 10 Moments about her family and Vina said she likes
her Writer’s Notebook because she learns lots of new things such
as new words and you can put lots of different things into the
Writer’s Notebook because it is your own.

If your children are sick, it is im-portant that you keep them at home until they are well enough to return to school. If they are going to be away for more than one day, please ring the school to let us know. When your child does return to school, please send a note to the class teacher which explains the absence.
Have you been to the Ultranet lately to check out what’s new and exciting in your child’s schooling?

Managing Your Asthma – Spacer Use Metered dose inhalers (MDI’s) or ‘puffers’ are a very common type of medication used for the prevention and treatment of asthma symptoms, yet many people are unaware of the significant benefits of using a spacer with their ‘puffer’, or when administering medication to another person. Spacers are easier to use and require less coordination for medication to be delivered properly to the airways, compared to using a ‘puffer’ alone Using a spacer ensures more medication reaches the airways rather than ending up in the stomach and mouth, and reduces the chance of developing associated side effects Spacers are affordable and are easy to use, clean and maintain. You can purchase one from your local pharmacy Spacers come in a range of shapes and sizes – including some that are designed especially for young children, are space-saving (can hold a ‘puffer’ inside) or are disposable Students who self-administer their asthma medication should be strongly encouraged to also use a spacer For further information, please contact the Asthma Foundation of Victoria on 1800 645 130 or email [email protected]
Maintaining Spacers Personal spacers should be cleaned in the following manner at least once a month: Dismantle the spacer and wash in warm water with detergent Remove the spacer and components from the water and do not rinse Allow the spacer and components to air dry Spacers should not be rinsed after washing in detergent, as the soapy water leaves an anti-static coating inside the chamber. This coating prevents medication from ‘sticking’ to the inside of the spacer when the ‘puffer’ is used. More medication is then able to be breathed into the airways where it is needed. Spacers should always be re-placed if they become cracked or broken. Spacers are easy for any person to purchase and use in order to treat their asthma and manage symptoms as effec-tively as possible. For further information, please contact the Asthma Foundation of Victoria on 1800 645 130 or email [email protected]

Physical Education News Free sessions for badminton... Children from grades 4/5/6 took part in Bad-minton clinics last week. The students learnt
the skills and techniques for playing the game.
Some children had excellent, natural tal-ent. Everyone from 4/5/6 will take home vouch-
ers for some free time on the courts at the Al-tona Badminton Centre. Some children will re-
ceive a voucher for a free term of lessons at the centre. It would be wonderful for your children
to take up these free offers as they were very
enthusiastic about learning the game of bad-minton. We gave John Lim, our coach, a big
thank-you at the end of our clinics. Swimming Lessons.... Swimming notes are now coming in for the Din-
jerra 9 day Intensive Swimming Program which will take place in the first two weeks of term 4
from Tuesday 11th Oct until Friday 21st Oct. Please don't forget to send the permission note
along with the medical note and $97.00 back to school by Friday 2nd September. I cannot
stress enough the importance of your children
gaining confidence in water and learning how to swim.
Prep/1 Health.... Children in Prep/1 classes have been learning
about personal hygiene - in particular looking
after their teeth. They have been practising the correct procedure for cleaning and flossing their
teeth thanks to free kits sent to us from Col-gate. Please reinforce good habits at home - in
particular cleaning their teeth both morning and
night to practise what they have learnt. Debbie Domas - Health and PE teacher.
