The building works continue and will do so until mid-December when it is due to be handed over. To say we are fed up with living in mud is an understatement. The carpets in our cars are wrecked, no one wears shoes that they care about anymore, the carpets in the BER building are almost beyond repair and Mal the cleaner just shakes his head and stares at the sky. Will it all be worth it? I’d definitely say YES! By now nearly all of the staff have been for a walk through and although things are nowhere near finished, it is clear that what we are getting is so much better than what we had before. The rooms are airy and light and there will be a large courtyard in the middle of the new buildings that will be a calm place where students who don’t want to run around can sit and enjoy each other’s company. We will be also getting a new Art room and a Music room that will be a hub for the Arts as the school grows. In keeping with Government policy, there will be no air conditioning and no solar panels unless we are willing to pay for them ourselves. I have asked for a quote for the air conditioning to see if it would be possible for us to finance their installation. Clearly no one in Government or in the public service has tried working or teaching in an un-air-conditioned room with 25 children who would prefer to be just about anywhere else on a 40 + degree day. Contrary to what a lot of people believe, Government schools are not permitted to close because it’s extremely hot. The only person who can give permission for a school to close is the Minister for Education and Training and in my 45 years in education, she/he has never done it. Too many children are getting to school late. We don’t want children here too early either as it is unsafe. The time we want children to arrive at school is between 8.45AM and 8.55AM. Children entering the classroom late disrupts the late child’s learning and the learning of the rest of the class as it forces the teacher to re-settle the class and bring the late child up to speed. Please ensure that your child is here on time. Graeme Smith Principal Book Week Assembly/Parade 2:30pm Come dressed as your favourite book character Thursday 29 th August 2019.

Principal’s Report

A message from the Assistant Principal Honeymoon

It was wonderful to return to school last week to have many of the

students and parents welcoming me back with big smiles and lovely

messages. However, I think I might’ve come back to Australia a

month too early! One day of this cold August winter and I have

forgotten the feeling of the warm European Summer sunshine and

my tan seems to have

faded. Riding around the

island of Santorini on a

quad bike and watching

the sunset over the caldera

are now distant memories

as the swimming program, excursions and book week become the focus of

my days.

Book Week

Beginning Tuesday 27th August will be Book Week for Dinjerra. This is an exciting

week where teachers and students spend the week celebrating and enjoying

Australian children’s literature. Teachers will spend the week celebrating books,

and Australian authors and illustrators, they will conduct activities relating to the

theme ‘Reading is my

Secret Power’ to

highlight the

importance of reading.

On Thursday 29th

August 2.30pm we will

have our Book Week

assembly where each class will showcase their winning

Book Week costumes. I look forward to seeing lots of

our parents and school community joining us for our

Book Week assembly.

New School Building

Last week I was able to have a sneak peek into the new school building

and see the progress that has been made so far. It was hard to contain

my excitement, especially with the learning spaces. The learning

spaces are bright, spacious and colourful and will be wonderful for our

students to learn in. Videos and photos have been posted onto the

school’s Facebook page if you would like a little sneak peek yourself.

2/3C & V

Reading the M100 Words: Congratulations to the learners who achieved the Aqua words and the green words!

Student of the Week

We welcome Thanh (P/1L) to Dinjerra Primary School. She has shown that she can be thoughtful, safe and a learner. Congratulations on your Student of the Week award!

P/1

The 2/3 students have been using the 6 writing traits to improve their writing. We have been using mentor

texts to help us work on our Voice and Word Choice. Students have been using dialogue to help the reader

understand how their characters are feeling and choosing interesting words that help the reader understand

their writing. At the end of the Term, students will be using these new skills to help them publish a piece of

writing linked to our Inquiry topic ‘Living Things’.
