Introduction: What is NECAP?

The New England Common Assessment Program is the result of a collaboration among New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont and Maine to build a set of assessments for grades 3-8 and 11 in order to meet the requirements of No Child Left Behind.

• NECAP assesses reading and math in grades 3-8 and 11, writing in grades 5, 8, and 11, and science in grades 4, 8 & 11.

What does NECAP measure?

• Math (grades 3-8 & 11)– Number and Operations– Geometry and Measurement– Functions and Algebra– Data, Statistics and Probability

• Writing (grades 5, 8, & 11)– Structure of Language and Writing

Conventions– Short Responses– Extended Response

• Reading (grades 3-8 & 11)- Word ID/Vocabulary- Level of Reading Comprehension:

Initial Understanding and Analysis and Interpretation

- Type of text: Literary and Informational

• Science (grades 4, 8 & 11)- Physical Science- Earth Space Science- Life Science- Inquiry

NECAP test items are aligned to the Vermont Grade Expectations and are designed to measure student performance in the following ‘strands.’

Trends in Achievement Data • 8th and 11th grade scores are flat in all content areas (slide 5 & 6)• 8th grade FRL reading and math scores are decreasing (slide 15 & 16)• 8th grade science scores continue to fall below state levels (slide 10)• 11th grade math scores - females continue to score below males (28)• 11th grade math scores decrease from 8th grade levels (31)
