THE VALUE OF MANNERS

The supporting value this week for students to focus on as part of our social skills program is Manners.

Manners are used towards others so they know you respect them

Showing your manners means you demonstrate positive expected behaviour

Using your manners means that you know how to speak to people politely

Manners is a way of demonstrating that you know the right way to do things.

INQUIRY INCURSION AND EXCURSIONS

Over the last two weeks, our students in Years 1 and 3 have had the opportunity to be involved in extra experiences to support their understanding of their Inquiry Learning. Year 1’s visited Scienceworks where they learnt about toys as inventions and the use of natural forces. The interactive exhibitions they viewed, ‘Think Ahead’ and ‘Ground Up’, highlighted the future of inventions. The Year 3 students were treated to an exciting Aboriginal cultural incursion where they learnt about how Australia’s First People hunted, made music, told stories and made art and craft from the resources of the land. Our students were excited to share with me their thoughts about these experiences.

YEAR 6 ‘WELCOME DAY’ VISIT TO ALKIRA SC

Yesterday our Year 6 students visited Alkira SC to provide our students with what a typical day looks like at secondary school. They experienced tabloid sports and a science lesson in an actual science lab. This visit allows for familiarisation prior to the state-wide orientation day that will be held on Tuesday 10th December.

PRODUCTION FEEDBACK

Thank you to the parents who have responded to the survey located on Compass in regards to our School Production. We appreciate all feedback as it certainly guides us in decisions for future years.

LEARNING TO READ – WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW

Reading begins at a very early age when children start to take notice of the print that surrounds them and the talk that includes them. Children begin to engage with reading and writing experiences that attract their attention and interest before they go to school. Children notice street signs and most can recognise a large yellow ‘M’ sign from a kilometre up the road because it benefits them! They pay attention to books they like and often insist on many re-readings of their favourites. They learn quickly to find aps on mobile phones and electronic devices because it benefits them to do so.

Talk is a key to literacy learning. Children need opportunities to interact. Recent research indicates that children are becoming more adept at communicating in the language of commands and demands rather than being competent in extended conversations. I suspect electronic devices may be inhibiting the time parents spend talking with their children. Children need to be included in interactions with significant others and to ensure that happens, electronic devices need to be turned off. Parents need to talk with their children! It is in the context of engaged conversations that children expand their vocabularies, increase their understandings of the world, learn about themselves, and learn the nuances of the language and effective communication.

Let children make decisions about the books they choose to read. This implies that there is a well-stocked and suitable range of books from which to choose. It is essential that there are lots of books in the home and that they are readily available. Create a book-flood by borrowing weekly from the local library, buying from garage sales, finding supermarket specials, making your own, and sharing books in the community.

Look at how books are stored in the home, for example, bookshelves, book boxes, or shoe boxes. Are the books visible or tucked out of sight? Do the children have a bed light to read at night? Keep introducing children to different kinds of books — humorous books, books with beautiful illustrations, rhyming books, pop-up books, electronic books, graphic novels, and factual texts. With your children, visit places such as the local library, markets and bookstores to find books that are interesting and fun to share. The number of books, the care of books, and the storage of books are all messages regarding how books and reading are valued in this household. What message are you marketing? Have a good week

A message from our new Assistant Principal...

YEAR 1 SCIENCEWORKS EXCURSION On Friday the 23rd of August, the Year 1’s set off for a day at Scienceworks. They were very excited and the bus ride through the city proved to be amazing – especially going through the Burnley Tunnel. The students participated in a science show led by the museum staff about ‘Toys and Natural Forces’ and explored a variety of interactive exhibitions including the ‘Think Ahead’ exhibition, the ‘Ground Up: Building Big Ideas’ exhibition and the ‘Sportsworks’ exhibition. The ‘Think Ahead’ exhibition has assisted children in their inventions for our Inquiry topic, ‘Where we are in Space and Time’. It was a jam packed day and the students were tired – some even falling asleep on the bus on the way home!

YEAR 3 ABORIGINAL CULTURAL INCURSION

On Thursday the 29th of August, the Year 3 students and teachers participated in an Aboriginal Cultural Incursion. The day included a session with Herring, an Aboriginal expert, who taught the students about the ways Aboriginal people hunt, make paint, create and play didgeridoos and even how to throw a boomerang. It was a wonderful day and everyone learnt something new about the Aboriginal culture.

DID YOU KNOW?

Didgeridoos are traditionally made from tree branches that have already been hollowed out by termites.

The returning boomerang was only created by the Aboriginies.

There are over 200 tribes or language groups in Aboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander culture.

The Australian Indigenous culture is the longest living culture in the world, this means that people are still doing things the same way they were done over 65,000 years ago.

SPORTS REPORT Last Friday, we had interschool sport against St Francis De Sales Primary School. Our kickball, European handball and basketball teams travelled by bus to St Francis, but our badminton and AFL football teams stayed at Tulliallan to compete. In badminton, we had lots of great points and long rallies. We were lucky to win a total of 18 sets, with St Francis winning 6. The best doubles team for Tulliallan were Rebecca and Januda, who easily won all their matches and showed good sportsmanship. We had lots of fun! The kickball team played incredibly well but in the end, we lost one game 12-16 and the other game was a tie (16 all). Sarvi gave his all during the game and tried his very best. He skillfully tricked the opposing team by waiting for them to turn around and then he made a run for it. Shiv also did a huge kick into the air which allowed 4 people to make home runs. We laughed a lot during the game and we’re looking forward to our next match. The European handball teams won both games. Our mixed team won 7 goals to 1, and our girls team won with a score line of 8 to 4. One of the best players in the mixed team was Emily, and in the girls team, Somaya played really well. Our basketball team also had an exciting first game. Tahleah and Elijah organised the girls and boys basketball teams strategically to see the girls coming away with a strong win 14-2. The boys and the mixed team drew their

games, but thoroughly enjoyed the great sportsmanship of both schools. During the football match, it was a pretty close game at the start. Tulliallan worked hard, showed great sportsmanship and never gave up. Tulliallan held strong and came out with a win. The final score was 23-9. Best on ground was Gene because he showed great teamwork and his goal kicking was on fire. We would like to thank Miss Tobin for managing subs and Mr Kilgour for umpiring and coaching. We would like to thank all of our coaches for supporting us throughout the games and in helping us to develop our skills in training sessions. We are looking forward to our next round of interschool sport before the end of term. By Mia D, Riley, Tara, Angelina, Leanne, Irin and Jaya

BIODIVERSITY TIP OF THE WEEK - BE ENERGY EFFICIENT

Climate change is causing global temperatures to rise and we all need to find ways to be more energy efficient to keep it below a 2-degree increase. We can start by reducing our consumption of power. Try doing an energy audit at home and switch to energy-efficient light bulbs, turn off appliances at the wall and don’t use air conditioning or heating when you are not in the room.

Stay tuned for the Green Team’s next top tip next week!

ICT GUEST SPEAKER

On Thursday, Sam from ‘Here Technology’ came in to talk to the Year 5’s and 6’s about the company he works for. He showed us the ‘Here We Go’ app they have developed which is a map navigation system. This system is used in 4 out of 5 cars worldwide. He talked to us about how they use planes, surveyors, satellites, drones and lasers to make a map of locations all around the world. It was really interesting to learn about how technology is something you can study at university, and how it can lead to having a career in ICT.

BYO CUP AND MUG LIBRARY AT TULLIALLAN PS

To help reduce the waste we send to landfill or to overflowing recycling facilities, we are working with the school canteen to run a BYO Cup Scheme and Mug Library. Disposable coffee cups are lined with plastic and near impossible to recycle so they are usually destined for landfill and sadly often end up in our environment. Reducing and reusing are far better options, so we are encouraging all students, parents and staff to bring their own cups for coffee or hot chocolate. If you bring your own large cup, you will receive extra coffee/hot chocolate as they are larger in size and help protect our environment. Some students are already doing this which is great to see! For parents who forget their cup in the morning we will have a limited amount of donated mugs available to use and return.

NUDE FOOD NINJA OF THE WEEK

Congratulations Max from Prep B for being a Nude Food Ninja and bringing an

excellent lunch to school. Well done!
