During the last ten years we have witnessed increasing fragmentation within evangelical Protestantism in North America. Amidst the various calls for renewal, Emergent Village, The Gospel Coalition, and other organizations such as Acts 29, Redeemer City to City, and Transform Network have risen to provide places for theological reflection and training for the challenges of being the Church in 21st-Century North America. Much good has come forth. However, at a time when evangelicalism is being reinvigorated and reshaped by theology and practice, a significant number of Church leaders, from across a range of theological traditions, have voiced a shared desire for a collaborative alternative.

Consumer society presents challenges to discipleship, particularly in the North American context. Among these obstacles is an ever-increasing post-Christian culture that begs for new forms of cultural engagement. Furthermore, the language of Christianity is no longer native to large parts of North America. For the same reason, the region has also ceased to be a dynamic missionary-sending agent, instead itself becoming a primary place for mission.

Taking into account these significant cultural changes, the upcoming generations need clarity on the issues of scriptural authority, the robustness of the gospel, the incarnational nature of the Church, the importance of community, and the place of spiritual formation as discipleship. From these perspectives, we need to engage the cultural issues facing the evangelical church – including multi-cultural ministry and heterogeneous congregations, women in ministry, sexual identity, pluralism and God’s concern for creation care and justice in the world. Many streams within evangelicalism have unique contributions to offer on all these questions and have many lines of coalescence in addition to other present options.

Thus, we are convicted of the need for an initiative that can offer theological and practical guidance to the North American Church seeking to navigate these issues together. To this end, we envision working in partnership to create conversational forums, media resources, and other training contexts - all for the sake of seeing Church leaders equipped for fuller and more faithful participation in God’s mission.

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS

As those who have joined us for this, our 2nd gathering of Christian leaders from across North America, chances are that you share our sense that the Church stands at an unprecedented moment of opportunity. To be sure, we face many different challenges and there are serious questions and issues before us. In such a time the temptation to respond out of fear is strong. On one hand, fear may tempt us to try and regain a sense of control through a coalescence of power. On the other hand, fear may incline us to capitulate to the ebbs and flows of culture. Instead, under the Lordship of Christ, the posture we believe God is calling us to is one of convictional humility in which we draw from the work of God among the many streams of the Body of Christ as we venture forward into God’s mission together!

So much has happened since we were together 2 years ago…

We have formalized a Board of 15 amazing leaders, women and men from across a range of tribes and contexts.

We have launched the “Once & Future Mission Series,” a project that aims at exploring and appropriating the work of God among the major streams of Western Christianity for the benefit of the wider Body of Christ.

We have held regional events that have brought hundreds of pastors and other Church leaders together for networking and new conversations.

More than 10 organizations have joined us as Alliance Partners, helping to resource this growing movement.

15 incredible theological practitioners have joined our online writing team, producing rich content as a resource to those serving in ministry and seeking to grow as disciples.

WELCOME LETTER

The Synergy Women’s Network was incorporated into Missio Alliance, further energizing our desire to encourage and equip women as leaders in the Church and beyond.

And that’s just what we have space for here! We’re so encouraged by the vast number of conversations we have with individuals and groups who express a profound sense of enthusiasm over discovering Missio Alliance as a sort of “tribe” that helps them to feel like they belong to a wider movement. We feel honored by the opportunity to help create a “space” for robust conversations and perspectives that transcend the dichotomies of Christendom-shaped faith.

In short, we are seeing God do immeasurably more than we have asked or imagined and could not be more excited about all that is emerging on the horizon!

Many thanks go to Alfred Street and Downtown Baptist Church for serving and hosting us once again – these churches are amazing and generous partners! We also extend our deepest appreciation to all those joining us as presenters and hosts. Along with your voices, these friends are compelling leaders who we have been invited because of their unique ability to help shape and guide the important conversations we’ll be engaging in together.

Our prayer is that God uses our time together to help impart a vision for how, as human beings and as human communities, we might more fully and faithfully rejoice over, live in, and extend the reality of the resurrectional life that God has made possible in Jesus and invited us into!

#1: RE-CLAIMING THE RESURRECTIONBrian Zahnd & Cherith Nordling

An enormous opportunity stands before the North American Church - one that stands to dramatically impact the shape and trajectory of Christian mission in our day. That opportunity is reclaiming the place of the resurrection as central to how we understand our identity as human beings made - and remade! - in the image of Christ. This session will lay the foundation for the rest of the gathering as we consider together how the centrality of the resurrection has been eclipsed in the thought and practice of the Church and all it might mean to capture a fresh vision for resurrectional life as followers of Jesus.

#2: REFLECTING THE NEW HUMANITYBen Witherington & Efrem Smith

PLENARYSCHEDULEASBC - Alfred Street Baptist ChurchDBC - Downtown Baptist Church

5

Being “in Christ” is no mere religious designation - it conveys our incorporation into Christ’s Body, God’s new humanity! The implications of receiving this adoption into God’s family are vast. Reflecting the new humanity made possible in Jesus’ resurrection entails a new self-identity, new ways of relating to fellow Christians, new ways of being in the world as God’s people, and much more. In this session we’ll consider key dimensions of this biblical theme in relation to some of the most pressing challenges facing the Church today in mission.

#3: LIVING YOUR RESURRECTIONAL IDENTITYAmos Yong, MaryKate Morse, & Jonny Grant

Re-imagining the resurrectional life is not an abstract affair. Instead, in keeping with the flesh and blood nature of Jesus’ resurrection, it is intimately connected to the issues, stories, and challenges we find ourselves connected to as those called to join God’s mission in the world. In fact, when engaged faithfully, rather than calling our attention exclusively to the future, the reality and power of the resurrection invite us to consider a vision of human identity and practice that matters right now. This session will open up space for a fresh consideration of our embodied existence in light of the resurrection.

#4: CULTIVATING A RESURRECTED WITNESS TOGETHER Branda Salter McNeil & David Fitch

While re-imagining the resurrectional life has a direct bearing upon our individual lives as disciples, the full weight and significance of those implications is dynamically related to the contexts and communities we are a part of. In and among our local churches, God is inviting us to cultivate a resurrected witness together - a witness empowered by the Holy Spirit through which we join God in proclaiming the good news of the kingdom. This session aims to provide a vision and resources for what it looks like for this reality to work itself out among communities of believers for the sake of God’s mission.

6

#5: CELEBRATING A RESURRECTION-SHAPED FAITHHoward-John Wesley, Jim Baucom, & Mandy Smith

We are a people of the resurrection and this final collective session is going to be a celebration of the new creation made possible by the resurrected Christ!! At the conclusion of our time together, rather than trying to pack in more content, we want to celebrate all God has done, is doing, and might yet do among the North American Church and - in our own lives - for the sake of His mission. We promise that you won’t want to miss this exciting and powerful time as we worship together in music, preaching, and art.

FORUM 1: POWER, PRIVILEGE & CLASS: BARRIERS & POSSIBILITIES UNDER CHRIST’S RESURRECTED LORDSHIP (DBC | FELLOWSHIP HALL)

We inhabit a divided world. Issues and systems of power, privilege, and class are cultural realities that contribute to brokenness and injustice at interpersonal and societal levels. Sadly, these dynamics are visible not only in the world, but all too often among our churches as well. While these dynamics present substantial barriers to faithful Christian witness, the dawning of a new age inaugurated in Jesus’ resurrection opens up new possibilities for understanding and engaging them.

FORUM 2: A KINGDOM VISION FOR INTIMACY, DESIRE, AND SEXUAL PRACTICE (ASBC | SANCTUARY)

Created in God’s image, human beings are inherently sexual. Intimacy, desire, and sexual practice among men and women are good parts of God’s created order. At the same time, as those subject to the effects of sin, evil, and brokenness, we must be open to the ways that our sexual desires and practices may be dis-ordered, failing to reflect God’s good intentions. Developing a kingdom vision around these issues involves, at the very least, (re)emphasizing Jesus’ call to his followers to love as he loved and a recognition that we live in the already/not-yet reality of God’s work of reconciliation and recreation. Such a vision offers new possibilities for (re)shaping the nature of our discourse and engagement around these important dimensions of human nature.

FORUM 3: GRAPPLING WITH RACE & RECONCILIATION AS RESURRECTED SONS & DAUGHTERS (ASBC | 221)

While there has never been a time in history that “race” hasn’t played an important role in how humans relate to each other, for Americans, recent events have accentuated the depth of race-related tension that exists in our context. More than this, these events and ensuing conversations have shone a brighter light on the extent to which many of our churches reinforce division along racial lines. As those who affirm that in Christ God is creating a new humanity, one that seeks an embodied unity across racial (and other) lines, these are crucial conversations for us to engage. A fresh focus of the resurrection

10

as central to Christian identity and practice provides a strategic on-ramp to advancing the life and witness of the Church as the reconciled and reconciling Body of Christ.

FORUM 4: HUMAN IDENTITY & THE (RE)CREATED ORDER (DBC | YOUTH ROOM)

Human beings are cultural beings. Created and called to be - together - the bearers of God’s image, our identity is bound up with God’s own design and purpose for the whole of the created order. We exist in relationship to economic systems, ecological systems, the built environment, and still other dimensions of the created order across time, space, and cultures. Unfortunately, and especially within evangelical traditions, little attention has been paid to the significance of the relationship that exists between human identity and God’s created order. A fresh and robust consideration of the resurrection offers a potent corrective to this. In and through the resurrection, human identity and God’s (re)creational activity are brought into the closest of relationships, offering vital perspective on the expansive nature of Christian witness.

FORUM 5: MADE (AND REMADE!) IN THE LIKENESS OF GOD: LIVING INTO GOD’S INTENTIONS FOR OUR GENDERED IDENTITY (DBC | SANCTUARY)

“When God created human beings, he made them in the likeness of God. He created them male and female and blessed them. And when they were created, he called them ‘human beings’ (Gen. 5:1-2). Our gendered identity is part of the very essence of what it means to be human. More than this, our gendered identity is something blessed by God as reflective of being made in God’s own image. The implications of this reality span the full range of our embodied existence - including the areas of self-identity, work, community, marriage, leadership in ministry, and still others. And while must take seriously the ways in which sin affects this part of God’s design for humanity, in light of the resurrection of Jesus we are invited to live into God’s present work of redemption and re-creation with respect to our gendered identity.

FORUM 6: DISCIPLESHIP AS TRANSFORMATION: LIVING & WORKING AS PEOPLE OF THE RESURRECTION (DBC | 301)

Our life in this world is not arbitrary. Our salvation is not limited to an eternal destiny, but is bound up with and intimately

12

related to the lives we lead and the work we do. As disciples of a resurrected Lord, we are called into the beautiful reality of Christ-like transformation. Whether we’re single or married, whether we’re raising kids or empty nesters, whether we’re in school or work in public or private sectors, every second of our lives and every aspect of our work is full of significance and possibility. For, “if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.”

HOST: Rick Richardson

FRIDAY MORNING: Scott Daniels, Corey Widmer, Fred Liggin, Lisa Sharon Harper

FRIDAY AFTERNOON: Charlie Self, Don Coleman, Natasha Sistrunk Robinson, Deborah Loyd

FORUM 7: BODIES, PLACES, & MISSION: THE ALREADY-NOT YET WITNESS OF THE CHURCH IN CULTURE (ASBC | CHAPEL)

Comprised of people and operating in places that are each shaped by a tapestry of histories, traditions, and narratives, the life and witness of local churches are profoundly cultural realities. At the same time, though it will be expressed differently across time and space, the Church shares in a common mission - testifying in word and deed to the good news of God’s Kingdom. This mission takes on unique shape and power in light of Jesus’ resurrection. In particular, the resurrection invites the question, “What would it look like for the life-giving power of God to find expression among this people, in this place, for the sake of God’s mission in the world?”

HOST: Dan White Jr.

FRIDAY MORNING: Cote Soerens, Brian Zahnd, Meghan Good, Wayne Faison

FRIDAY AFTERNOON: Mia Chang, Efrem Smith, Jonny Grant, Travis Collins

FORUM 8: RESURRECTING LEADERSHIP: STEWARDING THE SPIRIT’S WORK IN MINISTRY & MISSION (ASBC | 211/212)

Christian leadership is, first and foremost, a spiritual affair. Rather than being consumed with “what works” or “what’s trendy,” leadership that honors God is primarily concerned with faithfully discerning and stewarding the work of the Spirit among God’s people. The resurrection provides a vital and all too often overlooked point of reference for thinking about and practicing Christian leadership. As the first fruit of God’s new creation, Jesus was raised and received “all power in heaven and on earth.” It is in light of this reality - the final and full authority of Jesus over all things - that Christian leadership finds its rightful orientation.

HOST: J.R. Briggs

FRIDAY MORNING: Mandy Smith, Bruxy Cavey, Efrem Smith, Nicole Unice

FRIDAY AFTERNOON: Scott Daniels, Mark Brewer, Jacky Gatliff, Tara Beth Leach

FORUM 9: LIVING THEOLOGY: KNOWING AND FOLLOWING OUR RESURRECTED LORD (ASBC | 311/312)

Jesus has conquered the grave! In light of Easter, there is now an important sense in which all theology is resurrection theology. Far from merely being a proof of his divinity, the

14

resurrection of Jesus represents the joint work of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in the reconciliation, redemption, and recreation of all things in the new creation. The resurrection is not an isolated doctrine, but calls forth a “living theology” that impacts all the ways that we would seek to know and follow God today.

HOST: Frank James

FRIDAY AFTERNOON: Roger Olson, Meghan Good, Karina Kreminski, Ben Witherington

A HUMAN TAKE ON WORSHIP AND THE ARTS(ASBC | 314)David Bailey and Mandy Smith

Einstein said: “The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.” How do the arts honor the gift, allowing us to express our humanity and affirming us in it, both in our practices as worshiping communities and in our expressions of worship in daily life? Join David and Mandy as their share their experiences as church leaders and artists.

BEING HUMAN IN COMMUNITY: WHY AND HOW WE PRACTICE DISCERNMENT TOGETHER (DBC | 301)Bruxy Cavey & Keas Keasler

If we believe the church is a community formed around the person of Jesus and led by his Spirit, then what bearing should this have on how we make decisions and discern God’s will? Like the early church in the book of Acts, is it possible to arrive

WORKSHOPSESSION 1FRIDAY 3:30-4:30

16

at decisions in which we can say “it seemed good to us and the Spirit”? Join pastors Bruxy and Keas as they share from their own experiences of communal discernment in the church and what this has to do with us being made in the image of the triune God.

ECONOMIC SHALOM: NEW STRATEGIES FOR CHURCH ENGAGEMENT (DBC | CHOIR ROOM)Lisa Sharon Harper & Charlie Self

We will explore kingdom strategies to partner with the Spirit for the flourishing of the image of God in every corner of our world. We represent disciples of Jesus with different approaches, but both dedicated to justice and ready for private/public partnership and the integration of personal integrity and property rights, mutual trust, and shared values. We ask what it means to welcome the future into the present by the Spirit.

EMBODIED LEADERSHIP: THE SOURCE OF EFFECTIVENESS AND CREATIVITY IN MINISTRY (DBC | 308)Deborah Loyd & MaryKate Morse

Paying attention to how you inhabit your body and how your identity is expressed through your body will determine the effectiveness, longevity, spiritual maturity, and creativity of your leadership. Christ Incarnate modeled the necessity of an embodied leadership that comes out of who you are and how you manage your physical presence. Friedman in Failure of Nerve wrote that maturity is taking responsibility for your own presence and your own destiny. Drs. and pastors Deborah Loyd and MaryKate Morse will catalyze a conversation around healthy embodied presence and focused identity.

FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS: WOMEN, RELIGION, VIOLENCE, AND POWER (ASBC | 311/312)

17

Brenda Salter McNeil & Natasha Sistrunk Robinson

Rooted in the biblical narrative of Esther, this workshop will help Christian leaders understand how the credibility of the gospel is inextricably linked to the Church’s value and treatment of women and those who are culturally different. This workshop explores the issues of violence against women in our current time, and provides a biblical framework for how men and women of faith can work together to use their power and influence to proclaim freedom for captives and comfort all who mourn in light of Jesus’ resurrection.

FROM FRANCHISED FAITH TO LOCAL IMAGINATION: RE-IMAGINING THE CHURCH FOR THE 21ST CENTURY(DBC | YOUTH ROOM)Michael Binder, Sara Jane Roxburgh Walker & Tim Soerens

God is at work in your local neighborhood, but what about the Church? What would happen to our churches if we started with God’s abundant activity, of the resurrection life all around us, and from this first step discerned the many possibilities there are to seek the good of the neighborhood as God’s people?

HUMAN DIGNITY & THE GOSPEL: FORMING FAITH COMMUNITIES THROUGH PEOPLE BEFORE PROJECTS (DBC | 306)Travis Collins & Habacuc Diaz-Lopez

Good intentions are not enough. Often, in our zeal to communicate the gospel and meet human needs, we impose our ideas of “success” onto people who end up feeling more like our “mission projects” than persons created in the image of God. In this session we will discuss the principles that guide a process in which we join God in His mission while honoring people’s dignity and valuing their cultures.

18

LEADERSHIP AND THE NEW HUMANITY: THE MISSIONAL POTENTIAL OF THE FIVE-FOLD (ASBC | 221)Tim Keel & JR Woodward

How does a community structure itself for mission? it’s one thing to value mission, but another thing to order a community’s life both philosophically and practically to participate in God’s creative and redemptive activity in a place over time. In this workshop, JR Woodward will describe the five-fold ministry…Tim Keel will flesh this out, discussing a polycentric model of leadership and the practical ways his church understands and organizes itself to embody these realities.

LEADING CHANGE, RECONCILIATION, AND TRANSFORMATION(DBC | SANCTUARY)Jo Anne Lyon & Efrem Smith

In an ever-increasing multi-ethnic, multi-racial, and multi-cultural reality it’s important for ministry leaders to be able to facilitate change and build bridges which bring people together for sustainable transformation. This workshop will provide tools, practical ministry models, and practical theology for pace-setting leadership in areas of race, gender, and class.

PREACHING (TO) THE HUMAN STORY (ASBC | SANCTUARY)Howard-John Wesley & Brian Zahnd

The Bible offers to us a grand narrative of God’s relationship with humanity. Right at the center of that narrative is the drama of the loss of our true humanity in forsaking God, our flailing attempts to recover it on our own, and God’s intervention in and through Jesus to disclose and make a way for the restoration of the imago Dei. In preaching the biblical narrative as the “Human Story,” we give our hearers the possibility of

19

imagining the world - our place and identity in it - in fresh new ways... ways made possible by the resurrection of Jesus Christ!

RECOVERING THE BLESSED ALLIANCE (ASBC | 213)Carolyn Custis James & Frank A. James

The Blessed Alliance between men and women is not a fifty-fifty arrangement. It goes well beyond simply making space for women, working out our differences, sharing power, slicing the proverbial pie into more equitable portions, and contemporary gender debates. The alliance God blessed (Genesis 1:28) is a key kingdom strategy built on the premise that men and women need each other in every endeavor. This workshop will address the challenges and benefits of restoring this Blessed Alliance for us and for God’s kingdom.

RESURRECTIONAL ECCLESIOLOGY (ASBC | 211/212)Don Coleman & Corey Widmer

The church is not a holding tank for the saved; it is a foretaste of God’s coming new creation. Therefore the church is called to embody in its current Spirit filled existence the marks of the future Kingdom. This is to be reflected in our practices, our community, our diversity, our worship, our forms of leadership, the way we treat the poor and the other amongst us. Don Coleman and Corey Widmer have worked together as co-pastors for 8 years in inner city Richmond helping to pastor and foster this kind of resurrectional community in the congregation of East End Fellowship. This workshop will share from their experience and cast vision for a future-oriented ecclesiology in other missionary contexts.

THE PREVENIENT GRACE OF GOD AND THE HOPE OF THE RESURRECTION (ASBC | CHAPEL)Roger Olson & Ben Witherington

20

Prevenient grace, or as Wesley sometimes ironically called it, “preventing grace” should not be confused with either Calvin’s notion of common grace, nor with justifying or saving grace. What Wesley has in mind is the grace which comes before conversion and enables “whosoever will” to repent of their sins and respond to the Gospel. As such it is seen as a necessary enabler of a fallen person who otherwise would be still be “bound in sin and nature’s night.” Wesley tended to think this grace was universal in scope, just as God’s mercy is over all his works. The key however is that for Wesley this grace is not seen as irresistible, else it would be hard to explain why some draw on this grace and respond positively to the offer of salvation, and some do not (bearing in mind Wesley most certainly did not believe in God foreordaining some to be saved and some to be lost from before the foundation of the world).

TOWARD A MORE HUMAN(E) DISCOURSE ON SEXUALITY(DBC | FELLOWSHIP HALL)Kristyn Komarnicki & Christopher West

When it comes to understanding what faithful sexuality looks like, the body of Christ is too often torn asunder as his followers choose sides, hunker down, and take cover. How can we love—let alone walk in unity with—those we can’t even see from our trenches? And if we can’t model love over the issue of sexuality within our churches, how can we ever enter into fruitful conversations with the secular world about the meaning and role of sexuality in human life? This workshop will look at how Christians can dialogue with love—across sharp disagreements—with people both inside and outside the church.

21

BACK AND FORTH FROM EARTH TO HEAVEN: TWO MOMS’ DAILY ADVENTURES IN THE RESURRECTED LIFE (DBC | CHOIR ROOM)Cyd Holsclaw & Helen Lee

We often think of our journey to heaven as an ultimate destination, the end result of a linear progression from this life to the next. Helen Lee and Cyd Holsclaw will challenge cultural norms and narratives, presenting a new vision for a life that is both fully present in the realities on earth as it is grounded in an eternal perspective. This will be an interactive and story-driven session, as Cyd and Helen will share their journeys as moms and ministers of the gospel and invite others to do the same.

DIVINE SEX—SEARCHING FOR TRUTH THAT TRANSFORMS(ASBC | SANCTUARY)Jonny Grant & Cherith Nordling

Modern forms of embodiment have created a steep incline

WORKSHOPSESSION 2FRIDAY 4:45-5:45

ASBC - Alfred Street Baptist ChurchDBC - Downtown Baptist Church

22

for the formation of disciples who can live out the relational rhythms of the resurrection life. In particular, the personal quest for “authenticity” and postmodern nihilism have become culturally intuitive forms of life that have hijacked human sexuality and relationships—including within the church. We’ll be discussing why these meta-trends create both threats and opportunities for the pastoral task today.

FINDING COMMON GROUND AROUND THE RESURRECTION: REFORMED AND ARMINIAN HOPES FOR TRANSFORMATION(ASBC | 314)Frank A. James & Roger Olson

Protestant Christianity has been divided between two perspectives on the human condition since the Reformation; these two perspectives can be found throughout much of Christian history even before the Reformation. Reformed-Calvinist Christians tend to emphasize the comprehensiveness and the corruption of human sinfulness while Arminian-Wesleyan Christians tend to emphasize the restoration and capacity of human freedom. At the same time, both perspectives affirm the human condition apart from Christ is hopeless; both agree that the cross, the resurrection and the Holy Spirit ground hope for redemption and renewal. Can they come together or must they remain separate streams of evangelical Christianity?

HEARING GOD: CHRISTIANITY’S AUDACIOUS AFFIRMATION(DBC | 306)Keith Matthews & Mark Moore

Hearing God was essential to Jesus’ life and ministry. Like Jesus, we too are meant to hear God and respond to his voice in our own lives and ministries. This workshop will discuss

23

the foundational teaching of Hearing God from a variety of streams and traditions. The tone will be theological and pastoral, focusing on real life application for individuals and communities.

MALENESS AND FATHERHOOD: REAL MEN LIVE INTO CHRIST’S RESURRECTION POWER (ASBC | 211/212)Don Coleman & Scott Daniels

Being a follower of Christ and male requires a true identification with maleness as modeled by Christ. Jesus declared he was “the resurrection” and others declared of him “behold the man.” Come join us as we press into maleness and resurrected living as modeled by Christ.

PRAYER AS FORMATION OF TRUE HUMANITY (ASBC | 221)Mia Chang & Brian Zahnd

Prayer is not tool to manage God, it’s a practice of human formation. The primary purpose of prayer is not to get God to do what we think God ought to do, but to be properly formed into the likeness of Jesus as the “truly human one.” If our aim is to form a Christian soul, prayer must be more than “just talking to God.” We need the liturgies (the prayers) of proper spiritual formation to lead us into the life of the resurrection.

RADICAL RECONCILIATION: A RESURRECTIONAL VISION FOR ENGAGING RACIAL DIVISION (ASBC | CHAPEL)Leroy Barber & David Fitch

A core dimension of reconciliation for the Christian entails opening space for people to face one another’s racial sins under the Lordship of Christ. It is the clearing of space for radical acts of listening and tending to the other face to face

24

by which we can understand the systemic habits of racial sin we have been born into. Receiving the life of the resurrection pushes us to uncomfortable places in order to embody the good news of reconciliation in which violence is overcome by presence, antagonism by forgiveness, brokenness by renewal. In this workshop Leroy Barber & David Fitch will explore these dynamics and their practical outworking in communities of believers.

REDEEMING SEX (DBC | SANCTUARY)Bruxy Cavey & Deb Hirsch

The gap between the church and the broader society is highlighted through arguments around sexuality. Relationships, identities, orientations, mores, and even such seemingly straightforward concepts like gender have cut battle lines between the church and the world. In this workshop, we will discuss how we hold in constructive tension a concern for people created in God’s image with a high view of the Bible’s teaching on sexuality. Navigating this in the context of a local faith community will be a special focus.

REDEFINING SUCCESS AND FINDING OPPORTUNITY IN FAILURE (ASBC | 311/312)J.R. Briggs & Mandy Smith

If God calls humans to lead his church, there must be some way for us to lead as humans. Join pastors and authors, Mandy and J.R. as they raise questions about our theology of failure and definitions of success and share their stories of healing from failure. Whether you’ve experience failure, feel like a failure or live in fear of failing, this workshop will help you see the strength in human weakness and the opportunities God sees in our humanity.

25

RESURRECTIONAL LIFE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD (DBC | YOUTH ROOM)Dennis Edwards & Dan White Jr.

There is an eschatological tension in the local spaces we inhabit. We see the pain and complexities of our places but we are looking for ways to be the peacemaking presence of Christ in the here and now. This session will offer a compelling theological framework for what it means for to be “truly human” in our neighborhoods and a tangible tool that disciples faith communities concretely and carefully into the resurrectional life God longs for the people and places we live among to experience.

SYNERGY WOMEN’S NETWORK: PAST, PRESENT, & MOVING FORWARD WITH MISSIO ALLIANCE (ASBC | 213)Carolyn Custis James & Haley Grey Scott

Get to know this newcomer to the Missio Alliance network, and you’ll soon discover Synergy has been here all along. We are a network of women who have embraced a large vision of God’s calling on his daughters and his sons. We are passionate about the missio Dei and are eager to join our brothers in service to the kingdom. To fulfill our calling, we have sought to engage at the foundations of the gender debate even as we tackle twenty-first century ministry opportunities and issues, and find better ways to partner in ministry with our Christian brothers. Join us for a robust discussion of our remarkable history and the opportunity that awaits as Synergy and Missio Alliance join forces in our kingdom calling.

THEOLOGY OF THE BODY AND THE MISSION OF MARRIAGE (DBC | FELLOWSHIP HALL)Christopher West with Gannon & Carey Simms

26

True love requires a gift of self in the image of Christ’s love for the church. God, in fact, inscribed this call to love right in our bodies by creating us male and female and calling the two to become “one flesh” (Eph 5:31-32). That’s what makes the body not only biological, but theological: it tells the divine story of Christ’s love — or, at least, it’s meant to. Sin has blinded us to that story, but Christ restores it through “the redemption of the body” (Rom 8:23). In this session you’ll learn from Christopher West, a leading interpreter of the Theology of the Body espoused by Pope John Paul II. You’ll also hear how a small group liturgy based on Theology of the Body is making marriage missional.

WHAT IF THE INCARCERATED ARE TRULY HUMAN? (DBC | 301)Lisa Sharon Harper & Efrem Smith

This session will provide a practical theology and ministry approaches for addressing mass incarceration and challenges within the broader criminal justice system. Prevention, intervention, and advocacy will be explored.

YOUR STORY + OPPORTUNITY = VOCATION RESURRECTED (DBC | 308)Deborah Loyd & Natasha Robinson

Why did God put you on this earth? The answer is more attainable than you might imagine. With a bit of guided introspection, we can explore how God uses the “seeds” of our emotional, physical, and spiritual deaths to continuously birth new situations that reveal our passions, make us more self-aware, and more dependent on Him. As passion and story collide with opportunity and devotion to God, the trajectory of one’s vocation emerges.

ECCLESIA LEADERS GATHERING WEDNESDAY, 4PM - THURSDAY,12PM AT DOWNTOWN BAPTIST CHURCH

All Senior Leaders of Ecclesia Network churches are invited to attend our annual Senior Leaders Gathering. This will be an important time to re-connect, support and encourage one another, and give shape to our developing movement together. Greg Boyd, Senior Pastor of Woodland Hills Church will join us on Wednesday evening to talk about the Power of the Spirit and the In-Breaking Kingdom. We will begin at 4 pm on Wednesday, May 6th. There is a small charge for this simply to cover food and coffee.

Lead Local is a partnership between Parish Collective and The Missional Network in Joining God in the Neighborhood. Our desire is to invite leaders who sense this movement of the Spirit into a series of learning communities in their local contexts to learn, discover, discern and practice together how to go on this journey with their congregations and local communities. WOMEN IN MISSIONAL LEADERSHIP: DISCERNING NEEDS & EXPLORING POSSIBILITIES TOGETHER SATURDAY, 7AM AT DOWNTOWN BAPTIST CHURCH

Missio Alliance is committed to advancing the voice and contribution of women as leaders in God’s mission alongside men. Especially with the inclusion of Synergy into our ministry, we sense that the time is right to but increasing amounts

30

of thought and energy behind this aspect of our work. But how exactly?! We have been having conversations, have commissioned research, and are actively praying for God’s direction in this regard, but we’re anxious for your insight and input as well. We invite those who share a passion for this issue to join us in dialogue over breakfast as we look toward the future together. Due to limited space, you must register to attend this breakfast.

The Missio Alliance Board of Trustees is comprised of individuals who represent varying perspectives and interests from across a range of theological traditions, ministry contexts, and backgrounds. In our early stages of development, these leaders are serving Missio Alliance as both consultants and advocates. As an initiative seeking to foster connection and collaboration amongst diverse groups within the broad spectrum of the evangelical tradition, these leaders, along with the communities and constituencies they represent, are helping us to develop an ever-deepening awareness and sensitivity to God’s work in and among the Body of Christ as we engage in mission together.
