To all of the patrons:
Thank you so much for being here and sticking with us through this difficult and uncertain time. We know that in planning live, in-person events, there is no “best” answer, but we feel it’s important to provide and support live production opportunities for the students as long as
we can do so safely.
Your continued support of the students and the Department of Theatre and Dance during this time means so much, and we’re so happy to
continue to bring you live theatre and dance events.Thank you for being here.
SPECIAL THANKS

Productions entered on the Participating level are eligible for invitation to the KCACTF regional festival and may also be considered for national awards recognizing outstanding achievement in production, design, direction and performance. Last year more than 1,500 productions were entered in the KCACTF involving more than 200,000 students nationwide. Written in 1610-1611, The Tempest is one of William Shakespeare’s last undisputed plays and demonstrates his skill as a mature playwright. The play begins with a shipwreck—not an unusual idea for Shakespeare as he used the same dramatic device in both The Comedy of Errors and Twelfth Night, yet its dramatic use in this play suggests a refinement and an improvement upon his earlier works. Of course, Shakespeare is well known for his lack of originality in that he pulls inspiration from many sources—his genius comes from how he skillfully weaves and adapts these sources in his own way, masterfully improving on them. Drawing from contemporary sources, such as an account of the sinking of the ship Sea-Adventure off the coast of Bermuda in 1609, and the writings of antiquity, like Ovid’s Metamorphosis and Virgil’s Aeneid, the Bard designs a tale of magic and fantasy that has captured the imagination for over 400 years.
Unlike most of Shakespeare’s plays, The Tempest was not first produced at his famous outdoor theatre, The Globe. Instead, the first recorded performance was in 1611 at Whitehall—an indoor space. By all accounts the play was highly regarded in its day, seeing many adaptations and revivals after Shakespeare’s death. It has certainly retained its fame into our own contemporary times, as exemplified in a recent visually stunning film by director Julie Taymor, starring Helen Mirren as a female Prospero. It should be mentioned that this is the third time MSU has presented The Tempest, having previously staged it in 1971 and 1990. We hope this 2020 production stirs your imagination as much as it has the countless audience members over the past 410 years.
Enjoy the show!
-Matthew Caron
