    2 CHRONICLES 20:15B-19 (NRSV)

15 Thus says the Lord to you: Do not fear orbe dismayed at this great multitude; for the bat-tle is not yours but God's. 16 Tomorrow godown against them; they will come up by theascent of Ziz; you will find them at the end of

the valley, before the wilderness of Jeruel.17 This battle is not for you to fight; take yourposition, stand still, and see the victory of theLord on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem.Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go outagainst them, and the Lord will be with you."18 Then Jehoshaphat bowed down with his faceto the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitantsof Jerusalem fell down before the Lord, wor-shiping the Lord. 19 And the Levites, of theKohathites and the Korahites, stood up topraise the Lord, the God of Israel, with a veryloud voice.

    --------------------------11:00 a.m.

    2 CHRONICLES 20:20-23 (NRSV)

20 They rose early in the morning and went outinto the wilderness of Tekoa; and as they wentout, Jehoshaphat stood and said, "Listen to me,O Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believein the Lord your God and you will be estab-lished; believe his prophets." 21 When he hadtaken counsel with the people, he appointedthose who were to sing to the Lord and praisehim in holy splendor, as they went before the

army, saying, "Give thanks to the Lord, for hissteadfast love endures forever."22 As they began to sing and praise, the Lordset an ambush against the Ammonites, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah,so that they were routed. 23 For the Ammonitesand Moab attacked the inhabitants of MountSeir, destroying them utterly; and when theyhad made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they

all helped to destroy one another.--------------------------

    6:00 p.m.

    2 CHRONICLES 20:24-28 (NRSV)

24 When Judah came to the watchtower of thewilderness, they looked toward the multitude;they were corpses lying on the ground; no onehad escaped. 25 When Jehoshaphat and hispeople came to take the booty from them, theyfound livestock in great numbers, goods, cloth-ing, and precious things, which they took forthemselves until they could carry no more. They spent three days taking the booty, becauseof its abundance. 26 On the fourth day theyassembled in the Valley of Beracah, for therethey blessed the Lord; therefore that place hasbeen called the Valley of Beracah to this day.27 Then all the people of Judah and Jerusalem, with Jehoshaphat at their head, returned toJerusalem with joy, for the Lord had enabledthem to rejoice over their enemies. 28 Theycame to Jerusalem, with harps and lyres andtrumpets, to the house of the Lord.

Almighty and Most Merciful Father, we come before You, acknowledging our sins, ourshortcomings, and our breaking of our Covenant with You.

Not only have we done things we ought not to have done, said things we ought not to havesaid, left undone so many things we ought to have done and been silent when we shouldhave witnessed for You.

Not only are we guilty of that, O Lord; but we have also closed our eyes and pretended notto see the injustices, the racism and the evil which pervade our everyday lives.

We have shut our ears and pretended not to hear the cries for liberation which come fromthe lips, lives and hearts of the oppressed - even our own Black brothers and sisters!

Forgive us, O Lord, renew our courage and faith, and keep us ever mindful of Thy great sac-rifice. Hear us, we beseech Thee, as we come to You in love and worship giving Your name

    the praise forevermore.

TO ALL OUR VISITORS ... To all who mourn and need comforting ... To all who arefriendless and want friendship ... To all who are oppressed and need liberation; and towhosoever will come, Trinity opens its doors. Thank you for coming and may God blessyou.

and adjusting our operations, our policies andthe way we do ministry as we serve a morediverse, expanded and challenged people of God. We strive to address the demands andthe needs of Gods people while remainingfaithful to what it means to be UnashamedlyBlack and Unapologetically Christian. Arealignment of staff and ministry is necessaryto move in accordance with Gods design.

Accountability In order to sustain and strengthen the

best of all that we have done and all that wehave become over the past four decades, weare putting more emphasis on what it meansto be accountable to God and accountable toeach other in doing the work of God. Fromthis day forward we are being more account-able in terms of seeing to it that our resourcesare being best used to keep us strong, keep usthriving and keep us on the cutting edge of

    ministry in the 21st century.

Adaptability In order to face the challenges which

lie ahead of us, we have to be flexible. Wehave to adapt the way we have been doingthings to the way we need to do things. Weare changing how we were to how we mustbe!

In this season of adaptability we arepreparing in a planned and systematic fashionto make several transitions over the next few

years. We hear the words of the hymn ACharge To Keep I Have, and we respond tothose words. We must serve this present

age! To do so, transition is necessary. Wehave to adapt to this present age.

We have a legacy that has been built. We also have a legacy that we leave for thegenerations who follow us and to insure thatour invaluable legacy is in place we must beflexible, adaptable and open to the leading of Gods direction.

As we adhere to these three principles

we are doing so structurally in the followingmanner. I have served as Pastor for thirty-three and a half years. I will be here 34 years(if the Lord says the same) come the firstSunday in March of 2006.

As Pastor, I recommended to theBoard of Directors that we appoint anExecutive Assessment/Management Team. That team will help me to guide us throughthis season of change, this season of adapt- ability , this season of accountability and thisseason of re alignment .

I am writing you, my beloved inChrist, to ask you as members of the congre-gation to support the vision that God hasgiven me. I am writing you, my beloved, toask that each member of this congregationremain in prayer for me, for my leadership, for the vision that God has given me and forthe wellbeing of our church.

I am asking each member of the con-gregation to pray for all our ministries and forall of our staff. I am asking you to reflectupon the ways in which you, as individuals,

can personally increase the sharing of yourresources, your talents, your time and yourtithes!

As I have been asking for thirty-threeand a half years, I am asking once again thatevery member ask God about becoming atither! If you tithe your time, tithe your talentand tithe your treasure, your focus will be onGod and not on gossip!

On the matter of gossip, I am askingthat every member focus on the things of Godand not on the rumors or inappropriate behav-ior of others who are trying their best to causeill will.

When you hear gossip and negativity, ask yourself this question: Do I trust the man of God who has been leading us for 34

years? Or do I listen to somebody who has not been here and does not know the whole story?

I am counting on each member tohelp support the vision that God has givenme. I am counting on each member to helpme make sure that together we can move for-ward as God directs; together we can moveforward as good stewards, and together wecan move forward into the future towardwhich God is calling us.

I wish you a Happy Anniversary onthis Sunday and I ask you to stand with me inprayer as God gives us the victory.

    Respectfully yours,

    Pastor Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.

    Countdown to 2006!

We said on the last Sunday of October that we would work together, savetogether, sacrifice together and give togetherto put the $300,000 we borrowed from ourown savings to pay off the mortgage whichwe burn today.

As of last Sunday, through your sacri-ficial giving over and above yourtithes, we have been able to raise$130,778.24.

We have today and three Sundays leftin the year to raise the balance. We also haveKwanzaa services and Watch Meeting serviceto bring in the gifts. We are counting down to2006!

Our commitment was to raise an addi-tional $300,000 over and above tithes andofferings by December 31st. I committed togive an extra $3,000 ($1,000 each month). Many members have joined me in giving$1,000. Others have joined at all kinds of levels. Some are giving $100 a week. Someare giving $100 a month. Some are givingwhatever they can give after giving theirtithes.

We have said for 30 years that wecannot all give the same thing; but we can allgive something! Together we can do it! Givetoday and give God the glory for the VICTO-RY that is ours through Jesus Christ.

ADVENT BODY AND SOULTAKE A BOW

Entering into Advent with both body and soul calls for a number of different postures.Normally, both physically and spiritually, the best choice is to stand straight and tall. If we stood at attention all the time, though, we might miss some of the things that are tobe found on the ground around us. We need to bend over, if we are to find a four-leaf

    clover.

The best of spiritual life is found as we seek to enter it humbly. To see a little baby in amanger, we need to get off the camels, which have brought us to this place. Approachwith humble awe, for it was the star that led us here, not our own wisdom. Bowing beforeJesus, we sense that God often comes to us in small events and insights.

The bow we take in Advent is not the act of a performer, whose art and ability are beingrecognized by applause. It is, rather, an act of reverence before God, who makes our lifepossible. It is a special kind of action. We bow, but we do not cower. We, in awe, fearGod, but we are not afraid. We stoop, but we are not stooped. We bow only to reach agreater spiritual height.

Sensing the greatness and purity of God, we cannot help but acknowledge our own rela-tive smallness and impurity. We readily admit our faults and shortcomings, but this is astep toward improvement. If we have been proudly patting ourselves on the back, it maybe time to bring our hands together in prayer. If our hands have been in our pockets, wemay need to reach out and help someone. Scripture tells us that those who humble them-selves will be exalted. If we bow before God, God may reach out a hand and say to us,Arise!

With the nomination of Samuel Alito to theSupreme Court, it is clear that should he be con-firmed, the court will unevenly lean to the conserva-tive right, meaning that civil rights and civil libertieswill be adversely affected.

Consider the record of Alito. As an appel-late judge, he argued that Pennsylvania had the rightto require a woman seeking an abortion to notify herhusband. This requirement was found to be a nox-ious burden on women by Justice OConnor and theSupreme Court. Alito further argued for theendorsement of what essentially are a mans propertyrights over his wifes reproductive choices - an argu-ment which reduces women to sub-humanity, in thesight of Alito. In other cases, he has taken the sideof large corporations against smaller competitors. Insexual and racial discrimination suits, he hasincreased the barriers by which victims could sueand get damages awarded to them. Moreover, manyof his positions, taken in lower courts, have beenoverturned by the Supreme Court.

The irony is that many of his decisions wereoverturned with Sandra Day OConnor being thedeciding vote. Alito, is the one nominated to replaceher on the Supreme Court. His nomination will hurt

the civil rights and civil liberties of Americans foryears to come. Urge your Senators to vote againstthe Alito confirmation.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Africa has always had what other people wanted, what other people needed, and did not want to pay

    for.~~Dr. John H. Clarke

ONE OF THE AFFAIRS OF GOD:

BEARINGThe affairs of God can be described by threewords which rhyme. They are caring, sharingand bearing. Bearing the burden of the cost tosupport the work of God in the world, whether

through charitable donations, raising moneyfor a particular need, or even paying our taxes,is the third way in which we carry out theaffairs of God, entrusted to us.

TREASURE MANAGEMENTMany of us are able to turn our abilities intoprofit through a job, for pay. But whetherwe work for a salary or are on welfare, whether we have inherited our money, receivea pension check, or get a weekly allowance, how we manage whatever treasure we haveshows how we value Gods loving generosityto us.

STEWARDSHIP BY EXAMPLEThe best way to lead is by example. As lead-ers, our responsibility is to set a positive exam-ple for others. When we put Christ at the cen-ter of our lives, that witness draws others toservice and support of the churchs mission.
