Dear Members,

Our first order of business is to congratulate the recent TLMI Eugene Singer Award winning companies for Management Excellence. The Singer Award is based on growth and profitability metrics and is awarded to converters in four size classes. At the recent Converter Meeting in Palm Beach, Florida we honored first-time Singer Award winner Columbine Label; third-time winner Kopco Graphics; second-time winner The Label Printers and ninth-time winner Consolidated Label for receiving one of the industry’s highest honors. Very well done.

We achieved record attendance for the meeting in Palm Beach, and attendees are stating in the post meeting surveys that it was amongst our most informative, relevant

and insightful meetings. I would like to thank meeting chairperson, Geri Wise, for putting together an outstanding program. Kudos to Geri! And thanks to Frank Sablone and the TLMI staff for their work behind the scenes that made the event such a success.

The nine world’s leading label industry trade associations (L9) convened at the close of the TLMI Converter meeting. The delegation from The Japan Federation of Label Printing Industries (JFPL) planned to attend but was prevented by the earthquake and tsunami that has devastated Japan. Our thoughts and prayers go out to our friends from Japan as they recover from this disaster. I encourage each of you to support fund raising for relief efforts in Japan within your own companies.

Recently, the TLMI Marketing Committee has conducted a member survey asking companies to rate some of the services and publications the association provides to its converter and supplier members. We had an excellent response to the survey and I want to take this opportunity to let our members know some of the results. One of the most important questions the survey asked of converter members was the value they attribute to their participation in the ratio study. More than 60 percent of polled converters rated the Ratio Study as excellent value, and more than 30 percent rated the report as good value. This critical feedback serves to reinforce the Board of Directors’ commitment to continue offering this invaluable benchmarking resource to our members.

The Marketing Committee survey additionally asked converters to indicate the ways that they have been assisted by fellow converter members. The feedback we received to this question was astounding. Four out of five TLMI converter members indicated they have received technical assistance from their fellow converter members, one-third of respondents claimed they received business referrals and one in five converters claimed they have received sales and/or marketing assistance from their peers. Those of us who are active members can attest to the ongoing value we receive for our membership dollars, and these survey results further demonstrate the tangible benefits we realize as association members.

I would like to close this Chairman’s Letter by reminding our members to keep watch for information about the upcoming TLMI Technical Conference, which will be held September 6-8 in Chicago. This conference is packed full of valuable knowledge you and your associates can use to grow your top and bottom lines. You will soon be receiving the conference brochure and list of scheduled presentations. In the meantime, I urge you to keep watching tlmi.com for news. For those of you who were not able to join us in Florida, some of the PowerPoint presentations from the meeting are available on the Members Only section of the website.

year in a row is a result of the entire KOPCO team performing at extraordinary levels. Their dedication to the company’s goals had a great, positive impact on our success. This year was special because each and every person, each and every department and each and every manager did their best each and every day to help the company achieve this recognition. My congratulations to the entire team.”

Aurora, IL-based The Label Printers won for the medium company category, defined by sales of $15 - $35 million. This is The Label Printer’s second Eugene Singer Award and Lori Campbell, the company’s Chief of Operations, commented the following. “It’s a great honor to win the Eugene Singer Award and a testimony to the pride and hard work of our employees. But even with dedicated employees this award isn’t possible without the tremendous partnerships of our customers and suppliers and we’re grateful for them. The ratio study leading to the award is the real prize in my opinion as it is such a useful benchmark and management tool for improvement. We thank TLMI for offering this valuable membership benefit.”

Longwood, FL-based Consolidated Label won for the large company category defined by sales greater than $35 million. This is Consolidated Label’s ninth Eugene Singer Award and company President, Joel Carmany, had the following to say about winning this prestigious award for the ninth time. “Winning the Singer award is very exciting for all of the employees of Consolidated Label. We strive very hard to be a top performing company and are very appreciative of receiving the award. Thanks to all of our employees and customers for their continued support.”

In Memoriam: Honoring Industry Pioneer Mans Lejeune Bureau Lejeune founder, Mans Lejeune, passed away recently at the age of 79. Bureau Lejeune (now LEJEUNE Association Management) became involved in the European industry association, FINAT, in 1969 and under Mans’ guidance and direction FINAT had more than 400 members at the time of his retirement from the association almost 30 years later.

Mans graduated from Tilburg University with a degree in economics, the foundation for a business discipline that acted as the cornerstone for his career. Mans was a great believer in Europe as a cohesive entity and became involved in parliamentary affairs in 1959 by accepting the position of Private Secretary to the Vice President of the European Parliament. His early career saw him navigating the political and industrial landscape amidst the introduction of free enterprise across the European market community. In 1964 Mans founded Bureau Lejeune in The Hague, Netherlands, a lobbying entity working throughout the European Union. The company gradually became involved in the management of trade associations, including FINAT, and by the time of Mans’ retirement from active service in 2001, more than 20 national associations had chosen LEJEUNE Association management (L.A.M.) as their headquarters.

Over the course of three decades, Mans Lejeune and FINAT were intricately linked. He was a recent major contributor and researcher for FINAT’s Golden Jubilee Book. He was also the primary impetus behind FINAT’s successful exploratory tours to Japan (1974, 1978, 1982 and 1986) and to the United States in 1974.

Mans’ organization of the annual FINAT Congress has become legendary with venues across Europe’s major cities. His unfailing attention to detail made each and every Congress memorable, leaving a lasting impact on the European narrow web industry. During Mans’ tenure as Secretary General, the sponsorship agreement between FINAT and Cowise was sealed for the Labelexpo exhibitions in Europe and Asia.

TLMI offers the sincerest of condolences to the Lejeune family.

TLMI Editor Jennifer Dochstader spoke recently with Kevin Rinehart, Market Segment Leader - Sustainability for Avery Dennison, to discuss the TLMI L.I.F.E. Certification process, what it means to Avery to have achieved certification and the increasing pressure on companies across the packaging supply chain to reinforce their commitment to environmental best practices.

TLMI Editor: When did Avery receive TLMI L.I.F.E. certification, and can you talk about the internal momentum leading up to Avery’s decision to initiate the actual certification process?

Rinehart: A number of Fasson sites became TLMI L.I.F.E. certified last year, just before Labelexpo in Chicago. Part of Avery’s decision to become L.I.F.E. certified was due to my extensive conversations with converters in the marketplace, discussions about what exactly sustainability is and logical approaches. Like many companies, there are a lot of things Avery is doing that are already sustainable. For example, in our facilities we try to reuse cores whenever possible and recycle end caps and packaging materials. These things were already going on but as sustainability became a hot topic once again, we sat down and put together a market approach and a commercial strategy relative to environmental practices. One example is that Avery has put together a portfolio of products that have sustainable benefits and we’ve put more emphasis on pursuing responsible sourcing certifications like the Forest Stewardship Council. What energized me the most however, was that we started to commit to really going out and talking to our converter base and present this type of leadership position – someone such as myself dedicated to sustainability and helping our customer base understand what to do and where to go when it comes to exercising best environmental practices.

As soon as I heard about TLMI’s L.I.F.E. Certification Program I started telling converters: Look, here’s a scorecard based program that gives you a starting point. We wanted to demonstrate our leadership by becoming certified as well. Part of our strategy was to demonstrate sustainable leadership and commitment by becoming L.I.F.E. certified in certain facilities.

TLMI Editor: In terms of going through the certification process itself, were there any surprises or added benefits you can discuss?

Rinehart: The certification process met our expectations. One facility that was certified was our engineered films plant where we manufacture a lot of the conformable film materials that Avery Dennison has supplied to the label market for the last 20 years. That facility has OSHA’s VPP rating for workplace safety and managing materials so we have environmental health and safety personnel in this plant who are well versed in sustainable practices. We’re also ISO certified in this facility and L.I.F.E. meshed well with the systems that we already had in place that support environmental management. L.I.F.E. offered an opportunity for a number of Avery facilities to connect and communicate about different documentation and different approaches to the various processes. We found it drove dialog between facilities and actually drove consistency between documentation and statements that we make relative to environmental health and safety or specifically to sustainability.

Avery Reinforces Sustainability Commitment with L.I.F.E.

6

TLMI Editor: Now that Avery is certified, do you find L.I.F.E. a useful tool from a technical or marketing standpoint?

Rinehart: L.I.F.E. Certification has definitely been positive for the facilities because not everyone at the company is as well versed in sustainability as I am and it offered an opportunity for the environment and health and safety managers in multiple facilities to work together in making certification happen. It brought all the facilities up to another level of thinking about sustainability, and having to engage in measuring and defining sustainable practices. The aspect of creating a baseline – measuring things, setting goals to achieve –meshes really well from facility to facility.

TLMI Editor: When it comes to sustainable best practices and achieving some type of certification, how much pressure at this point do you see coming from packaging buyers, i.e. consumer packaged goods companies, down the supply chain to converters?

Rinehart: I think we are early in the curve, but things are moving quickly. I’ve been telling converters for two years and I’m saying the same thing to them as we move through 2011: You still have an opportunity to differentiate yourself via sustainability. The question is, how long will companies be able to differentiate in this way? The pressure from packaging buyers is going to become greater and greater and we’re already seeing this in bits and pieces. It’s interesting; the Walmart scorecard is almost old news at this point. Procter & Gamble recently introduced a scorecard and they are asking their suppliers to respond. Unilever is making some dramatic commitments to sustainability in the marketplace. These things are going to inevitably drive accountability and increase pressure throughout the supply chain and a product’s decoration, be it a P-S label or an alternative technology, will increasingly be placed under the microscope.

TLMI Editor: Are there any final comments you would like to make in relation to sustainability, our industry and L.I.F.E. Certification?

Rinehart: L.I.F.E. Certification is a real TLMI membership asset. Companies now have a sustainability “primer” with L.I.F.E., a tool that helps them figure out what to do first and how to demonstrate to their customers that they’re committed to best environmental practices. The converter can now turn to their material suppliers and ask them about their latest product offerings of eco-friendly or sustainable products and then turn right around and give that product information to their customers along with the stamp of being TLMI L.I.F.E. Certified. I believe that the L.I.F.E. initiative and the approach that was taken in putting it together as a tool and resource is an excellent foundation, an essential building block, that helps the converter move forward and demonstrate the type of vendor they are to their own customers. L.I.F.E. is extremely well suited to companies beginning to collect and measure information, helping them respond to the scorecards that we’re seeing in today’s market. L.I.F.E. Certification is a great place for a company to either start positioning itself as a sustainably-minded player, or to supplement current environmental initiatives a company already has in place.

EskoArtwork announces WebCenter 10

EskoArtwork has announced the release of WebCenter 10, a new version of its online collaboration and approval tool for the packaging and print supply chain.

“Initial feedback and reactions from beta customers indicate that WebCenter 10 will add to the application’s reputation as the most effective online approval tool for the packaging and print market,” comments Jijo Dominic, EskoArtwork Product Manager WebCenter. “From the early stages of software development, we worked with our customers to ensure that the new release meets their expectations.”

WebCenter 10 addresses industry needs WebCenter has hundreds of installations and many thousands of users worldwide. WebCenter serves a wide range of industry players such as packaging converters, commercial printers, pre-press service bureaus, global consumer product companies and highly regulated pharmaceutical companies.

With the packaging & print supply chain always under pressure to develop new value-add services, WebCenter 10 now addresses additional market needs. The straightforward user interface, the powerful staged approval support, the project management tools and the tighter integration with the Automation Engine all make WebCenter the logical choice for online collaboration and approval in the packaging and printing industry.

WebCenter dramatically reduces lead time and cost. WebCenter helps securely manage and automate approval cycles. It comes with a fast and accurate online viewing tool with unique viewing and compare features focused on the needs of the packaging and print industry. WebCenter users report lead-time reduction by up to 25%, simply by replacing the majority of hard copy proof iterations with online reviewing and approval cycles. Less hardcopy proofs shipped to various stakeholders has an important positive effect on the environmental footprint of the packaging development process.

Increased demand for the machines is directly related to recent improvements, specifically the implementation of the Genesis advanced control system. This system, exclusive to Rotoflex equipment, puts the converter in control, allowing more effective management of speed, workflow and roll quality in their operation. The 100% matrix and missing label detection, fast, accurate fault recognition and placement, and simple set-up and operation are necessary for today’s converting demands. In addition new models being outfitted with the Genesis system, the MAX aftermarket service and support team is keeping busy upgrading existing installations to the new control system as well.

Adds Gourlay, “We are looking to 2011 as another exciting year for Rotoflex, with key product line updates offering converters even more flexibility and capability.”

New Kollmorgen Delivers Industry-Leading Torque Density

Kollmorgen introduces AKM™ 8 Servomotirs - the latest addition to the company’s global, field-proven AKM motor series. With an unrivaled feature-set to satisfy global requirements right from the base hardware, AKM8 motors deliver higher torque density to cover the broadest torque/speed range in a housing that is 30% shorter than any standard motor in its class available today. As a result machine builders can reduce the size of their machines without sacrificing performance, or they can select a longer stack length to achieve higher performance without having to specify a larger, more expensive motor that would typically require mechanical changes to the machine.

Page 15: TLMI Announces Eugene Singer Awardstatic.webfulfillment.com/tlmi/blogs.dir/31/files/2012/... · 2014-01-03 · March 2011 TLMI Announces Eugene Singer Award continued on page 3

“The AKM high performance motor series offers a wide range of mounting, connectivity, feedback and other options and, with the addition of the AKM8, is now available in 8 frame sizes, 28 frame/stack combinations and 112 ‘standard’ windings. The result is unprecedented choice and flexibility to satisfy the exact needs of even more global applications, with the favorable delivery times and lower cost of a standard product. This is particularly significant for today’s machine builders who need to get a better, globally-deployable, machine to market, faster,” says Gene Matthews, Product Manager.

The AKM8 is available in two standard flange/shaft combinations designed to seamlessly integrate with 80% - 90% of machine builder needs around the globe, with no modifications to the customer flange needed. As standard, AKM8 windings are designed to operate at 230, 400, 480 VAC, eliminating the need for voltage transformation for machines that will be deployed in various geographic regions. AKM8 motors feature Class F insulation for a temperature rating of 155°C, and provide stall torque from 75 to 180 Nm, operating speeds up to 2500 rpm, and power up to 19.8 KW, with bearing lifetime rated to 20,000 h. These motors are RoHS and REACH compliant, UL listed, and carry the CE mark.

“A low-cog design provides smooth performance to maximize power efficiency and improve the quality of final product, making it a particularly attractive motor solution in metal forming and processing, printing, converting, molding, and alternative energy applications, among others,” explains Matthews.

All AKM series motors feature a robust one-piece housing with potted windings for maximum wire isolation and excellent heat dissipation, resulting in robust performance and long life in even the most demanding application environments. Market-standard high resolution feedback options for high- performance/precision or rugged environments are available, including Endat, BISS, Hiperface, and resolver option, among others. AKM motors are available for low or high speed (to 8000 rpm) applications, with windings that can be applied to all standard global voltages including 75 VDC, 120, 240, 400 and 480 VAC. A number of options are available to satisfy wide ranging application needs including a reinforced bearing to handle higher radial force, a sealing option to achieve IP67 protection at the flange, as well as varied connectivity and mounting options.

For truly unique applications where the more than 200,000 standard AKM offerings don’t meet the requirements of a given application, the Kollmorgen engineering support team can work alongside OEMs to customize a solution to satisfy their needs.

AKM motors can also be combined with Kollmorgen’s AKD™ Servo Drives for a perfectly matched high performance servo system. The AKD series is a complete range of Ethernet-based servo drives that are fast, feature-rich and extremely flexible, and integrate quickly and easily into any application. They ensure plug-and-play commissioning for instant, seamless access to everything in the machine.

Bunting® Magnetics Co. has introduced a Rebuild Program to repair and restore magnetic printing cylinders and anvil cylinders. This new program can refinish all surfaces to meet exacting customer specifications. This service covers die cutting, folding carton, two-piece can, plastic container and corrugated cylinders.

“At Bunting® Magnetics Co., we take great pride in the craftsmanship of our products. We have an acute attention to detail and a burning desire to produce superior products,” stated Mike Wilks, Bunting® Product Manager for Printing Products. “This focus on detail extends to our rebuild program. We have considerable machining capabilities and over 30 years of experience in making the best cylinders in the world. These skills allow us to rebuild a cylinder to most exacting quality control levels.”

“Our technical services include: replacement of cylinder bearers; repair or replacement of damaged magnets; restoration of bent or damaged journals; installation of hardened races and complete refinishing of the surface of the cylinder. As part of the rebuild process, there is an inspection of new parts prior to the cylinder being reassembled. All new bearers are installed to manufacturer’s specifications to ensure proper fit and prevent premature failure. Some rebuild work is limited as cylinders must have enough material on them to permit repairs within the cylinder’s specified tolerance ranges.”

“Another facet of the Bunting® Rebuild Program is our on-site Plant Audits. These extremely detailed visits include a visual inspection of all cylinders in stock. All surfaces, bearers and journals are inspected for damage

or imperfections. We determine the average size of the cylinder diameter in relation to the bearer diameter to allow for gap analysis. This exercise is conducted to .00005 of an inch. Also, we perform a run-out test on all journals, bearers and the body of the cylinder to determine any deviations from specifications. Finally, a full report is provided with all the necessary details including gap. We identify all cylinders that may need repair by serial number.”

GE, acting through its Technology Ventures operation, has announced its intent to commercialize GE’s Radio Frequency Sensing technology (RFS) through a commercial license to the RFID division of Avery Dennison. The proprietary RFS technology will enable a wide range of low-cost wireless sensing products in a series of applications, including industrial, food & beverage, packaging, and pollution prevention.

GE RF Sensing technology provides a platform for passive, wireless sensing capability. Built on traditional RFID technology, these sensors can detect toxic industrial chemicals (TICs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as well as biological agents and physical parameters. Developed by a diverse team of scientists and engineers at GE Global Research, this unique sensing approach is capable of providing selective quantification of chemical agents with low detection limits, and can operate in the presence of ambient humidity and other interferences. The sensors comprise HF RFID tags laminated with unique films, and work in combination with a proprietary reader that interrogates the tag to read both the RFID tag data and the complex RF waveform associated with the chemical, biological or physical measurement.

“This agreement marks an exciting milestone in the RF Sensor program,” said William Kernick, Vice President of Technology Ventures for GE. “Avery Dennison, a global leader in RFID technology, has a long-standing commitment to innovation and we are looking forward to working together to launch in-field customer trials.”

Jack Farrell, Vice President and General Manager at Avery Dennison RFID, added, “Through our technology development with GE, we have successfully demonstrated that RF Sensors can be manufactured using a standard roll-to-roll process. This achievement makes RF Sensors a commercially viable solution for high-volume applications across our diverse base of customers.”

In the upcoming months, GE and Avery Dennison will collaborate to engage partners and conduct RF Sensor technical field trials of applications for relevant industries such as pharmaceutical, food assurance, and agriculture.

multiple Performance Series presses, with commitments to future investments already planned.

The Performance Series press line consists of three models ranging in capability and cost. The P3 is at the introductory level. Driven by a precision engineered direct drive train, the P3 is designed specifically for conventional label production. Mark Andy is proud to have sold two of these presses since being introduced to the market at Labelexpo India in December, 2010. The first was an investment for Color Label, a division of Mulligan Printing, based out of St. Louis, Missouri. A second P3 has been sold into South Africa, signifying global interest in the most recent model of the popular platform.

The P5 model is a servo-driven machine, providing further machine control and productivity. Making its big splash at Labelexpo Americas last September, the machine proves that flexo makes a strong argument against digital for short run label production.

Flint Group has announced the launch of two new blankets designed to deliver exceptional value and optimum print quality in defined sheetfed market segments.

For packaging applications, Zenith 660 is a robust, long life blanket with excellent on-press stability and great smash resistance, thanks to its thick compressible layer. The nitrile blend surface with optimum microhardness makes it suitable for printing on all kinds of board. But it’s Zenith’s superior gauge stability that sets it apart: superb ink transfer and maximised release characteristics coupled with an innovative carcass design deliver long life and high quality print.

For new generation high-speed sheetfed applications, dayGraphica DuraZone 5200 is designed to deliver the ultimate in print quality yet provide unmatched on press durability. Constructed using DuraZone compressible layer technology, previously only available to high speed web printers, the 5200 resists smashes and gauge loss brilliantly to maximise on-press life. The specially formulated face compound and smooth surface finish maintains sharp dots and excellent print contrast at the highest production speeds, and with its quick release characteristics, 5200 is an excellent choice for lower weight stock too.

Transfer Media Product Management Director Bob Mosedale gives some additional background detail, “Intensive trials at some of the most demanding printers across Europe have proven that both these blankets perform extremely well in their target applications. As sheetfed presses increase their running speeds, blanket design parameters originally used for web presses become increasingly relevant in sheetfed applications, which is why we chose to introduce DuraZone technology into a sheetfed blanket. But before we took the final decision to introduce these blankets to our customers, we carried out detailed comparative benchmarking, and we are now very confident that these latest additions to our Print Media portfolio will help win substantial new business for us”.

These new blankets confirm Flint Group’s commitment to ensuring best-in-class products are at the heart of its portfolio. Along with their wide range of offset inks, fount solutions, powders, washes and other press room chemicals, they reinforce the Group’s high quality value adding proposition.

TreaTear LT52 and LT72 films for non-retort applications. Today CPGs and converters can manufacture attractive stand-up pouches that provide an effortless, precise straight-line tear across the package every time, as well as offer improved rigidity and clarity. In addition, TreaTear LT52 and LT72 polypropylene films perform as a drop-in sealant film for LDPE sealant web applications. The new films also enable flexibility with the overall lamination design, as well as compatibility with zippers, spouts, and other reclosable features. Available as thin as 30 microns (1.2 mil), TreaTear films offer yield advantages over the traditional 60- or 70-gauge sealant films and source reduction benefits without compromise to rigidity or tactile properties. In addition, the LT52 film’s low haze provides four to five times better clarity than the traditional LDPE sealant films, making it ideal for window applications. The LT72 film’s low seal initiation temperature (SIT) makes it suitable for pouches made with BOPP laminations. Applications for TreaTear LT52 and LT72 include meat, cheese, nuts, confectionery items, granola, cookies, and baking mixes.

“Stand-up pouch popularity continues to grow,” says Chris Voght, Director of Strategic Alliances, Toray Plastics (America), Inc. “Expanding our directional-tear sealant film retort line to include non-retort pouches presents new opportunities for end users and converters,” he says. “Now they have the freedom to choose a proven alternative to LDPE sealant films traditionally used in stand-up pouches, and they benefit from improved pouch performance, greater design flexibility, potentially better yields, and the associated sustainability advantages. Consumers are rewarded with reliable ease-of-use and reduced spillage, which can help build brand loyalty.”

Voght explains that the new TreaTear films can replace LDPE sealant webs with little or no change to the line conditions. He adds that the films are designed to work with standard stand-up pouch zipper stock, making the transition from incumbent sealant films to the TreaTear sealant films an easy process for pouch manufacturers. The entire TreaTear line of non-retort and retort films can now be utilized for all types of pouch laminations.

Kodak’s Graphic Communications Group will increase prices of digital and conventional plates as of May 1, 2011 in all regions of the world. This move is necessitated by the sustained, universal rise in costs for key raw materials and utilities used in the production of offset plates.

“Kodak understands the difficulty our customers face with increasing costs for many of the consumables used in the printing process, from ink and paper to energy and fuel,” said Doug Edwards, General Manager, Prepress Solutions and Vice President, Kodak. “During a time when all companies are facing added costs of doing business, we will work closely with our customers to ensure that both their plate needs and business requirements are met as effectively as possible.”

Increases for digital plates will be in the range of 5 to 10 percent, while the increase for conventional plates will be between 15 and 20 percent. Details of the new pricing structure will be communicated in April to all customers and dealers. All current contractual commitments will be honored.

RAKO Group, Germany, invested in a printing press from Nilpeter with a total of 13 printing units – three of these are gravure units - in 2010 to convert the sophisticated design ideas of the brand owners. This FA-4 is the sixth of this model in RAKO Group. During a visit to the headquarters of the company in Witzhave, just outside Hamburg, the company founder Mr. Ralph Koopmann explains the reasons for this investment. In addition, he also talked about some future plans of his group:

Self adhesive labels, flexible packaging and safety products are the key areas in which the RAKO Group operates. The various business segments have evolved successfully for years, says Ralph Koopmann who founded the RAKO in Witzhave, Germany in 1969. The group now consists of 25 individual companies with a total of 1400 employees. The largest product range is the adhesive labels, but also flexible packaging, sleeves as well as holograms for product security and RFID-Inlays and systems are supplied by RAKO. The company LeoMat GmbH builds inspection machines, overprinters and machines for the production of booklet labels.

Ralph Koopmann says that in 2010 the group turnover has grown strongly, thus he expects to come close to a turnover of €200 million. Due to the good order situation, the production is working to full capacity partly in four shifts. In order for the manufacturing capacity to keep pace with this development, the company invested heavily throughout the year.

Among the acquisitions of six Nilpeter presses is the new FA-4, which includes three solvent-gravure heads. The wide range of print methods mastered by RAKO have thereby been expanded from flexo and UV-flexo, letterpress, screen and offset printing as well as digital offset printing to now also including gravure. In order to avoid any surprises when entering this field, the company prepared for a year in advance to fully understand the technical requirements, so that when the machine was installed in 2010 all questions regarding Repro, tooling, applicable range of inks, explosion proofing etc had already been addressed.

The decision to invest in a printing press with a total of 13 printing units was triggered by customer request for variable configuration and high quality value added possibilities, explains Rainer Bufe, Technical Manager at RAKO-Etiketten. Mostly it is the cosmetics industry that time and again raises the standard. In this aspect a well equipped machine offers the great advantage of being able to fulfil unusual customer requests, for instance if sufficient print units are available, the screen range and full tone of a colour can be separated and printed in different print units. If this is considered in the planning stage and when choosing anilox rollers, it allows for a faster change over, more reliable production and printing results of a higher quality .

In Witzhave they find it beneficial to have the flexibility of three integrated gravure printing units in the FA-4. Rainer Bufe stated that “In addition to the base white or an opaque spot colour then silver/metallics are possible alternatives from foil stamping. Our expectations of the press have been met in all aspects. The gravure printing opens new, high quality possibilities which we, of course, can use not only in cosmetics but also in other market segments such as beverage labels. Many international suppliers of spirit beverages, sparkling wine and beer discovered the No-Label-Look as a marketing tool”.

RAKO Etiketten Installs a 13 color Nilpeter

Next to adhesive labels, the biggest product area of the RAKO Group are holograms, which are an impor-tant main pillar of the company, says the founder of the company Ralph Koopmann.

Page 33: TLMI Announces Eugene Singer Awardstatic.webfulfillment.com/tlmi/blogs.dir/31/files/2012/... · 2014-01-03 · March 2011 TLMI Announces Eugene Singer Award continued on page 3

Customers of the RAKO Group include well known brand owners of mineral oil, foods, non-foods, cosmetics products and media. Apart from delivery of labels, many of these companies also expect a comprehensive service. RAKO is now much more than just a self-adhesive label supplier – and consider themselves a partner to the customer for label solutions. Such a partnership with customers goes so far that graphic designers from RAKO by now work with the brand owners on site. “The customers want for instance, more studies in our laboratory to investigate the compatibility of the product with the labels”, says Ralph Koopmann. This close co-operation shortens the development time and results in labels customised for that particular printing technique. Therefore the possibilities for the label designer are so much larger

An essential feature for the RAKO Group is the ever expanding range of solutions they can offer. The label print shop in Witzhave entered into digital printing at an early stage and they now have nine printing presses producing in respective divisions. Ralph Koopmann is convinced that in future the digital printing gradually take market share from conventional printing. This development could accelerate drastically if the production speed could rise from todays 32m/min to 50m/min or more and if the web width of 500mm could be handled. The digital printing systems, with a very short set up time and low waste, are the right solutions for small order sizes and increased demand for short delivery times.

Brand security labelling is another successful main pillar of the RAKO Group. It ranges from original labelling of luxury goods to spare parts for the automobile industry and even protection against falsification of passports. The recipe for success also lies in the business philosophy of offering not only single products, but complete solutions. For example, RAKO manufactures all the components for security of RFID labels in all common solutions, through to complete systems for anti-theft for many department stores.According to Ralph Koopmann, RAKO is the number one provider of starting numbers for recording runing times in connection with running events. They are numbered consecutively in digital printing and the starting numbers contain a detachable control chip for measuring the run time, which is fixed to the shoelace. In this context the company uses a technical innovation of registering the run time by means of sensors integrated in a portable mat which is crossed by the runners. In that way the high technical costs for installation of appropriate registration equipment on the running tracks would not be required

In the search for new successes Ralph Koopmann often thinks very un-conventional. The most recent example is found in the engineering company LeoMat, owned by the RAKO Group, experimenting with systems, which can coat, laminate and die-cut pre-printed substrates. Ralph Koopmann expects that this relocation of production steps on one hand will increase the production output in the printing area and on the other hand result in cost savings due to less set-up waste and lower material costs.

The target is to strenghten the international business of the company group. The existing basis with sites in Germany, France, China and South Africa must be expanded by new additional branches, mainly in the countries Russia, India and Brazil.

In Memoriam: John Martin, Web-Handling PioneerJohn R. Martin, a pioneer in the development of web-handling and automatic roll-changing technology, died February 27, 2011, after a brief illness. An entrepreneur known for his irreverent sense of humor as well as his engineering acumen, Martin—who founded Martin Automatic Inc in 1968—was 74.

His many patents and technological advancements include: inertia-compensated tension control, web guiding systems, automatic zero-speed splicers, and non-stop rewinders. In 2002 John Martin turned over complete operations of the company to Roger Cederholm, naming him president of Martin Automatic Inc. after Roger’s 18 years of tenure as the compass for MAI’s direction.

Cederholm says, “John was a rare individual: a talented engineer with a great business sense and the foresight to set up a culture, which fosters creativity in all areas. He disliked ‘me too’ products and favored solutions that give real, long-term value to printers and converters. His legacy continues with Martin Automatic’s innovative work in splicing, rewinding and web handling systems. John’s great wisdom and foresight have enabled us to continue doing “business as usual” at Martin Automatic.
