Dear Members,I am very pleased to report that the association’s recent Technical Conference was a huge success and SOLD OUT for the first time ever! More than 350 attendees joined us in Chicago. I would like to congratulate and thank Conference Co-Chairs Michelle Garza, Brian Gale, and Nick Van Alstine for a job exceptionally well done. Technical Committee Co-Chair Paul Brauss and the entire TLMI Technical Committee also de-serve our thanks and recognition for delivering an excellent learning experience.

I am also pleased to announce that thanks to the efforts of past TLMI Chairman, Frank Gerace, and Roger Pellow, Director for the Labels Group of Tarsus, TLMI has entered

into a long term partnership with Labelexpo Americas. Under the new agreement, TLMI will partner with Tarsus for five additional Labelexpo events beginning in 2014 and ending in 2022. This agreement will benefit both organizations as we work together to serve the ever changing requirements of TLMI mem-ber companies and the North American narrow web industry.

The international boundaries that once divided economies continue to disintegrate and new technologies enter our market faster than ever before. The North American narrow web industry’s success is depen-dent upon having resources and tools available to help navigate our changing times. TLMI and Tarsus working closely together over the course of the next decade will assist narrow web converters and sup-pliers with a knowledge foundation to move their businesses forward.

The TLMI Board updated the association’s Strategic Plan at its midyear meeting. This update will carry us through to the end of 2012. Since the plan’s initiation in 2009, TLMI’s hardworking volunteers have accomplished 90% of the objectives established by the board when the three-year plan was put into place. This recent update will help strengthen TLMI in 2012 and will serve as the foundation to establish another new, formalized three-year plan in a year’s time.

The establishment of our partnership with NAPL is a key part of our strategic plan to bring additional sup-port services to our members. Two TLMI member companies have recently begun using the services of NAPL. While at this point we are unable to announce the type of work they will be employing NAPL to do, it is important to realize that our members are recognizing the benefit of the TLMI-NAPL partnership. More information about NAPL’s consulting offerings can be found on the TLMI website.

The recent TLMI webinar, Volatility and Raw Material Costs, drew more than 100 participants. This rein-forces TLMI’s role as a learning organization as we continue to put together programs for our member companies that address the issues and challenges we all face in the current marketplace. If you were not able to attend the webinar, I suggest you go to the Members Only section of the TLMI website where a recording of the entire webinar is posted for your reference with accompanying PowerPoint presenta-tions.

Also available in the Members Only section are the two Leading from the Front interviews with Terry Ful-wiler and Joel Carmany. I urge you to listen to what these industry leaders have to say about the current state of our market as they share their insights and talk about their respective business journeys.

I hope everyone had a great summer and I look forward to seeing you at the Annual Meeting in October.

End-Users Still Predicting Growth for Shrink Labeling

Packaging buyers continue to project migration from cut and stack, PS and non-PS wraparound labels to shrink labeling decoration Historically, in the North American labeling industry there has always been a technology or application trend that moves through the distinct cycles of industry reactions that go something like this: from initial wariness and suspicion when the technology is first introduced and adoption rates minimal; to gradual, increased acceptance as the technology proves itself and converters develop the knowhow to successfully integrate it onto their production floors; and finally to a point where you can't open a magazine or attend a technical conference without reading or hearing about the technology's prowess as a be-all for the narrow web industry.

Over the decades, examples of such technologies and/or application trends have included water-based flexo, UV flexo, digital plates, RFID and shrink labeling. Earlier this year for the association's Biannual Index & Trend Report, TLMI polled narrow web packaging buyers asking them about application trends and technology projections. More than 60 companies participated in the TLMI poll across end-use categories. Companies including Unilever, Nestle, Apple, General Mills, Estee Lauder, Pepsi Co., and Heinz, in addition to smaller regional packaging buyers, were asked about their company's consumption projections for shrink sleeve labels. Survey participants were asked to choose the answer that best explained their company's projections from the following:

• We currently use shrink sleeve labels for some of our products and I anticipate that our usage of shrink sleeves will grow.

• We currently do not use any shrink sleeves for our products however I anticipate us using shrink sleeves in the next three years.

• We currently do not use shrink sleeves and I do not foresee us using this type of label decoration process in the future.

The results of the survey revealed that a number of these companies are unquestioningly predicting shrink labeling usage will grow in their product offerings. The chart below indicates shrink utilization outlook for all respondents.

As this chart shows, more than 20% of the total packaging buyer respondent base already use shrink sleeve decoration on some of their products and predict utilization will grow. More than 12% do not currently use the technology, but predict they will within the next three years while 66% do not currently use shrink and predict that they never will. What is important to note here, is that according to what is a well-rounded packaging buyer collective that represents all major end-use categories; more than one-third of respondents are projecting that their company's shrink utilization will only increase.

Those companies who answered their usage of shrink labeling will increase were asked an additional key question: What type of labeling decoration will shrink replace? Respondents were asked to choose from the following:

• Shrink sleeves will replace pressure sensitive labels.

• Shrink sleeves will replace cut and stack labels (glue-applied).

• Shrink sleeves will replace non-pressure sensitive wraparound labels.

The chart below indicates packaging buyers' responses:

This chart reinforces what we have seen on retail shelves. When the technology was introduced, shrink labeling commonly replaced pressure sensitive decoration in order to offer consumer packaged goods companies a larger piece of on-the-shelf 'billboard' on which to showcase graphics and design, in addition to a labeling technology that could adhere to unique container shapes. And as most of us know, historically pressure sensitive labels have replaced cut and stack (glue-applied) due to the total applied cost benefits and superior flexibility of a PS label.

What is interesting from the results of this survey however is that more than 37% of packaging buyers who indicated their shrink utilization will grow predicted that shrink will directly place cut and stack decoration. This leapfrogging of pressure sensitive decoration isn't new, but according to this recent TLMI poll is certainly something we will increasingly witness as brand owners continue to seek ways to increase graphic display area on their products.

Overall Size of North American Shrink Labeling Market and Projected Growth Rates

Few people know the shrink labeling industry like Gary Gates, retired principal and founder of Gates Packaging, Inc. For nearly four decades Gates worked within the realms of shrink sleeve labels, tamper evident preforms, shrink bands, blow molding, thermoforming and package printing.

According to Gates, shrink sleeve labeling growth has been topping forecasts for 2010 and is projected to continue to do so in 2011. Shrink sleeve labeling grew at 6% in 2010 (projections were 4.5-5%) and technology growth in 2011 is predicted to top 2010 growth rates at 6.2-6.5%.

One of the most significant advances in shrink sleeves in the past half decade, stresses Gates, has been flexo's ability to catch up to the quality of rotogravure. “From a converting standpoint, flexo has been able to achieve parity with gravure quality,” Gates states. “With the advent of digital plates and the ability to hold such a fine dot on films, you have to get a loupe out to see any difference. Traditional narrow web printers have aggressively entered the shink labeling niche for the past five years, however I see this leveling out now.”

Gates attributes the leveling out to narrow web converters being reluctant to make the investment in shrink. There have been companies who have tried to build up a shrink business and have failed, creating a scenario where the market is becoming increasingly hesitant to enter the shrink niche in an economic landscape that remains uncertain.

“The barriers, as far as I'm concerned, have little to do with the production floor,” Gates continues. “I believe most of the barriers have to do with the sales and marketing of a different kind of labeling decoration product. If you put a pressure sensitive salesperson on shrink, it's going to take time for them to be successful at it and in the meantime they have abandoned the development and care of their PS customer base. Management starts pressuring them because their PS sales are off and if the company doesn't see an immediate growth area in shrink they back out.”

Gates emphasizes that to be successful in shrink, a narrow web company needs to have a sound 24 month plan in place, as this is the average amount of time he has observed it takes to find success in this niche. He recommends companies dedicate one salesperson to becoming a shrink sleeve specialist, relieving them of the expectation to sell other labeling methods.

Gates also recommends narrow web converters look to their existing customers to build a base for shrink sleeve products, rather than supermarket shelves, as he believes there remains a sizable pool of brand owners who have just begun exploring the technology's advantages and haven't integrated it yet.

The recent TLMI brand owner poll reinforces this assumption and survey results, coupled with the technology's projected growth rates moving forward, position shrink labeling as a market in which narrow web converters will continue to find opportunities.

A New Perspective on Shrink Labeling

Still a growth market, Avery introduces a new application for the shrink bag protein sector.

As packaging buyers continue to predict cut and stack and pressure sensitive applications will migrate to shrink labels, narrow web label converters explore strategies that will enable them to benefit from the technology's continued promise and projected growth in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Avery Dennison has recently introduced a technology which enables narrow web converters to enter what has traditionally been a wide web flexible packaging playing field; the protein bag market for the deli meat and dairy sector.

Avery's new product, called Avery Dennison Shrink PS, is engineered to withstand the rigorous vacuum-shrink process without wrinkling. Bassam Hallak, Avery Dennison's Global Segment Director – Food, explains the company's objectives behind the introduction of the new product. “Something Avery realized was that we needed to improve the appearance of products on the shelf and inside the deli cases as well. One of the areas we have traditionally supplied is the shrink bag market specifically for processed meats and cheese. Basically, the products are vacuumed in a bag through a shrink tunnel. The bag shrinks tightly around the product and then a label is applied to it. This can be problematic as a number of these products have irregular shapes and when you apply a traditional PS label you can get wrinkles and the appearance suffers. We have developed an intersection between a pressure sensitive and a flexible packaging technology. It's a co-extruded facestock and rather than applying the label at the end of the decoration process, we're applying it at the beginning. The actual label and the bag shrink together and the end result is a wrinkle-free label that makes the printing look like it's directly on the bag.”

According to Hallak, Avery's new material offers end-users the key benefit of late stage differentiation, something unattainable previously as pre-ordered, preprinted bags don't offer the option of changing graphics. With the proliferation of SKUs across products in the deli sector, end-users have to hold more and more preprinted bags in inventory. As protein bags are a traditional wide web flexible packaging market, these are large volumes of printed product; product that increasingly risks sitting in inventory and becoming obsolete before it has gotten to the deli case.

Enter the narrow web label converter. Unlike their wide web flexible packaging counterparts, narrow web converters are extremely adept at offering small run sizes and quick turnaround effectively creating a just-in-time solution for a market where graphics are mattering more and more, and delivery requirements becoming tighter and tighter. Hallak explains, “Printing these products requires carrying ink from the plate to the bag, and that’s exactly what our Shrink PS labels do. We are giving brand owners complete control of when, how often, and how much they can label. Secondly, these shrink bags today can only be printed on a central impression flexo press due to the thinness of the substrates and material sensitivity issues. You are limited with what you can do on a central impression press and we are opening the possibility of printing these labels on in-line flexo or gravure presses allowing the brand owner to expand their graphics requirements while delivering a wrinkle-free label.”

While this new technology may not bode well for traditional wide web central impression flexible packaging printers, it certainly opens up a window of opportunity for narrow web converters. And as we have historically seen shrink penetrating markets like premium food and beverages; it presents opportunities in a whole new end-use category as well.

In a recent TLMI Brand Owner Survey, label sourcing personnel and consumer packaged goods companies were asked if they felt their label vendors were good at educating them about new technologies and services. Thirty-seven percent of participating companies indicated they felt their label vendors were 'good' at providing educational resources while nearly 60% of participating companies indicated their label vendors were merely 'fair' at providing educational resources. While narrow web industry suppliers have long published white papers as a resource to better assist their label-converting customers, label converters themselves have not widely adopted this marketing tool.

TLMI Editor Jennifer Dochstader recently spoke at length with Brian Gale, President of I.D. Images, about a white paper the company published titled “The Eight Biggest Challenges Packaging Distributors Face.” In an industry where white papers published by label converters has not been a common occurrence, Dochstader spoke with Gale in an effort to understand what the company's objectives were behind the compilation and distribution of the white paper, in addition to ways the recent recession has demanded more innovation from label converters and the educational resources their customers will require.

Editor: We're in an industry where definitions can vary, can you give me your precise definition of a packaging distributor?

Gale: For us, a packaging distributor is someone who goes in and sells packaging equipment and materials, boxes, stretch tape, and labels. They're a sourcing mechanism and they represent us. For example, let's say you own a cupcake company. You have a retail outlet and a factory and you need boxes to ship your stuff, a machine to package your cupcakes, and a way to convey the brand. A packaging distributor comes in, you tell them what you need, and they make recommendations and find all the entities you need to package, ship and label your products.

Editor: How much of I.D. Images' business involves packaging distributors?

Gale: We sell only through distribution so we are somewhat unique in this industry, and that was one of the purposes of the white paper. We sell to other converters, packaging distributors and

TLMI Editor Jennifer Dochstader recently interviewed I.D. to value added resellers which can be anything from selling forms, to label brokers, to systems integrators who put in barcode and inventory tracking systems.

Editor: Because we are talking about an intermediary here, you felt it important that this white paper would serve as a vehicle to better educate?

Gale: Yes, and to start a conversation with them. Though I think this is just as relevant for converters who sell directly to brand owners. It's not just about the products you sell. It's about trying to differentiate yourself from companies who just push labels and to be a converting company who understands the industry and can help with some of the challenges your customers face. We have gotten positive responses from publishing the white paper and it has opened some doors for us. The objective is to not be somebody who just deals with the buyers. It's to also be a strategic resource for sales managers, branch managers and owners.

Editor: You are stressing how important it is to educate your customers; being an information source for a critical level of the supply chain that happens to be your entire client base. I think our industry often overestimates the level of technical expertise so many of the people who source labels, flexible packaging and folding cartons actually have. We assume the top level of the supply chain is more informed than they actually are, which is why resources, like the I.D. Images white paper you have published, is something that is truly needed and something label converters should prioritize in terms of marketing strategies moving forward.

Gale: You are exactly right. Our objective is to publish white papers like this one to help our customers grow and to make sure we are recommending products that work. We must be able to effectively educate and solve problems for our customers. I think a number of converters have cut back on the support side, so we are using that as an opportunity to differentiate ourselves.

Editor: In the white paper, you address commoditization. This is a term we have heard increasingly over the last decade in the narrow web industry and one that the people who buy and source labels are able to use as leverage with their existing, and potential, label vendors. Do you think that a lot of label converters out there are faced with customers who are increasingly saying, 'Your products are just a commodity?'

Gale: Absolutely. A very common assessment is that we as label converting vendors are replaceable, and that labels are an easy product to find. The reality is that companies need labels and if you don't have them, your plant gets shut down. When you look at the variable information segment, barcode labels for example, these labels are great when they work, and they are cheap to source. When they don't work however, saving two or three percent on what you are paying for the labels isn't a good thing because the overall cost of barcode labels that fail can be very expensive. From an inventory tracking standpoint, there are huge costs that go well beyond the frustration that we as consumers feel when our products won't scan when we are standing in line at the register.

Editor: When your sales people tell your customers this, how readily do they buy this potential scenario?

Gale: Honestly, it can be a tough sell. Especially today with such drastic inflation and everyone looking to cut costs. However, we have had some success in getting people to think about the big picture and focus on the value that is delivered above and beyond just the purchase price of our products. One of our goals with the white paper is to better inform our customers of exactly this.

Editor: What's interesting is that you could almost view a white paper as a way a label converter can tell their story. It's a way a company can describe what they feel differentiates them – whether it's a focus on some type of customer support element, a specialized converting area, certain label applications – just like the issue you mentioned with barcodes. The importance of having a 'top-tier' label supplier to ensure your products are performing optimally so it doesn't end up costing even more money should a label fail to perform in some way. Moving forward with future white papers, are you planning on implementing case studies with statistics into the information you provide?

Gale: Those are actually things we are working on right now, these types of presentations and white papers that incorporate specific case studies and stats to use as a potential marketing vehicle as well as an information resource. In terms of how good our industry is at educating our customers, I sometimes think we have gotten a little lazy. Prior to the recession everyone was growing and the need to be innovative was not as much as an issue as it is today. We are now starting to see pockets of innovation coming from converters.

One of the issues our industry faces, is that a lot of converters are small and do not always have the resources to innovate. These companies have to rely on their suppliers. Industry suppliers however went through the recession as well, and have been seeking growth for the most part outside of North America. They will only do that increasingly as that is where the growth is going to come from. This in turn has put the onus on converters to invest and be creative in how they do things whether it is new products, new printing technologies, new services, etc. In this environment we are seeing some converters really thrive and I would reason that the reason those companies are thriving is that they made the decision to make serious investments; investments in people, equipment, or their own internal processes. Producing a white paper is another way to invest in a resource that will offer payback, in addition to potentially differentiating yourself in a market that is increasingly competitive.

Polyonics Introduces Halogen-Free Flame Retardant Tapes

As electronics devices continue to be more and more complex, the need for advanced flame retardants has never been more important. In addition, the automotive, aerospace and rail industries are under increased pressure to use flame retardant materials throughout their vehicles.

To help solve these problems, Polyonics has introduced a family of halogen-free flame retardant tapes. These new dimensionally stable, engineered tapes are specifically designed to help prevent the propagation of flames in a wide variety of applications. They are also tested to the UL94 standard.

Polyonics understands the chemistry of burning and manufactures the tapes using advanced FlameGard™ Technology. The technology combines chemical and physical mechanisms to effectively control heat transfer, oxygen availability, material decomposition and the generation of flammable gasses.

Flame retardant single coated tapes are available in 1 and 2 mil polyimide and 2 mil polyester films and 2 mil aluminum foils. A variety of adhesives and liners are also offered along with a combination flame retardant/static dissipative construction

UPM Raflatac Introduces RP75

Raflatac announces the release of RP75, a new adhesive for the Americas market designed for immediate application on fresh-blown, semi-squeezable and rigid polyolefin bottles. Fresh-blown bottle manufacturers have tested this permanent adhesive against other solutions available in the market, confirming that RP75 is the perfect choice for delivering smooth finished labels – without any bubbling or darting – when applied to fresh-blown bottles.

RP75 solves one of the packaging industry’s major problems: the need to remove fresh-blown bottles from an assembly line, cool them for 24 to 72 hours and then reload them onto label applicators; or else develop cumbersome workaround processes that increase staff labor. With RP75, packagers can decorate in-line, automating key processes and optimizing their operational efficiency. As a result, plastic bottle manufacturers can eliminate work-in-process inventories and enhance the quality of finished products. In its experience working with RP75, leading plastic bottle producer Silgan Plastics found that RP75 produced zero defects on its labeled bottles as compared to the bubbling or darting the company says occurs on up to 8 percent of all labeled polyolefin bottles sold in the marketplace today.

“With UPM Raflatac’s RP75 adhesive, Silgan Plastics has significantly streamlined its labeling processes and ended the material failures we experienced with other adhesives,” says Timothy Monacella, Manager, Decorating and Intellectual Property, Silgan Plastics. “RP75’s quality provides benefits to everyone in the value chain: from the manufacturers and converters who design packaging for world-renowned brands, to the global brand owners who seek products that present flawlessly on retail shelves.”

“RP75 is a true game-changer for the fresh-blown bottling industry,” says Patrick Goss, Prime Business Director, Americas, UPM Raflatac. “RP75 allows packagers to add value by decorating fresh-blown bottles in-line, while boosting their productivity and profitability.

Flint Group announces the introduction of Lithocure Premium™ in Europe and Asia. This new generation UV offset system with outstanding print and press performance is suitable for most label substrates and narrow web applications.

“Offset printing is a balance of several parameters” says Par Olsson, Product Manager Flint Group Narrow Web. “Fully optimizing this balance can seem complicated, and printers sometimes feel it’s a moving target - especially when maintaining print quality at high speeds. We have developed Lithocure Premium™ to become a cornerstone of a stable UV offset process”, Mr Olsson continues. “The offset ink is a key element and this ink raises the bar considerably. With Lithocure Premium™ printers can achieve robust, reliable and high performance results without changing other press or printing parameters. “

Using Lithocure Premium™ will result in higher productivity, better print quality over long runs, and truly superior print quality no matter the substrates. Flint Group received very positive feedback during beta testing at printers around the world. Comments included: “Improved ink duct flow”, “Stable ink density at various press speeds”, and “Excellent dot gain and dot gain stability across shades”.

Lithocure Premium™ offers benefits such as:

New Introduction from Flint Group

At the Label Industry Global Awards 2011 in Brussels, Nilpeter has received a prestigious nomination for the New Innovation Award.

The New Innovation Award is awarded for a specific innovation by a supplier or converter company in the label industry and this year’s Nilpeter-nomination comes from Nilpeter's “Revolver” die unit. This unique system is based on the SMED principle “Single Minute Exchange of Die” and allows the operator to prepare a new die for the next process while the press is running. During the job change the operator can focus on changing the printing units and let the Revolver change the die automatically, resulting in saved time and increased ease of handling yielding a much leaner job change.

-Updated PDF technologies - Automation Engine 10.1 has the latest Enfocus PitStop preflighting tools on board.

-Integration with entry level business systems - for some time, customers have been able to automatically receive job data and metadata in JDF/JMF format from MIS and ERP systems. Through XML they can now automatically draw job data from non-JDF compliant business systems such as FileMaker Pro, Excel or home-made software solutions. No manual entry or rekeying is required, allowing automated job integration without additional investment.

-Tighter integration with output devices - bi-directional communication and status feedback is now possible with HP's industrial presses for labels & packaging and with the EskoArtwork CDI flexo platesetter. Operators can now monitor status and receive feedback from output devices directly within Automation Engine.

-Simplified user interface - additional workflow logic has been added to reduce human interaction with the workflow, making operator error far less likely.

Simplified Operations

French packaging printer Cartonnages Larré has increased its prepress efficiency since implementing Automation Engine 10, and has been beta testing version 10.1. The most impressive benefit the new workflow server brought to this folding carton converter is a reduction from 20 different job ticket templates down to only two, thereby considerably simplifying operations.

"We've increased throughput and improved customer service," said General Manager Hugues Larré. "Implementing Automation Engine has allowed us to keep the upper hand and maintain a high level of customer loyalty. And all of these benefits have been achieved without increasing staff yet improving our competitiveness."

Dries Vandenbussche, Product Manager Automation Engine at EskoArtwork, commented, "Automation Engine 10.1 will be of particular interest to our Nexus users, who can now use Automation Engine for everything they had in Nexus whilst taking advantage of the substantial amount of features only Automation Engine can do. The enhancements we have made with version 10.1 mark another big step towards 'lights-out' automation, and that means that our customers can expect to achieve even lower overall prepress costs by using Automation Engine as the hub of their pre-production environment."

Automation Engine 10.1 is commercially available worldwide.

Gráficas Varias, located deep in the heart of Cava country, in Spain’s Catalonia region, produces more than 650 million labels year for the liquor trade, supporting the 140 Cava Houses in the local area alone, whose annual production output ranges from 200 to 240 million bottles. This is wine label production on a serious scale, and it all began back in 1918 with the company printing stationery and later books on letterpress machines.

The Cava market began to grow in the 1930s and 40s, and the company elected to specialize in labels for the business, which until 1976 were printed letterpress. With the advent of offset litho, in the form of Heidelberg presses, the company grew steadily in the wet glue market until, in 1988, it installed its first narrow web press, a Gallus Q33, followed closely by a Kopack 250, and the tide was turned towards self-adhesive labels, which today account for around 70% of the company’s business by value.

The present Managing Director, Josep Varias Ribot, grandson of the founder, and President Elect of the Spanish Label Federation, explained the development of his family company. “We still focus on the wine and liquor trade, with Spain and southern France as local regional markets, and France for Cointreau, Russia for Vodka, and Cuba for Rum, providing useful growth potential. Other business comes from wrapped chocolate labels that are sheeted for wet glue application, and also booklets. We produce these on our 12-colour Kopack 400 line.”

Subsequent press investments saw the first waterless Codimag installed in Spain, followed by a Nilpeter B3000 and a second Codimag. Most recently, attention has switched to flexo and the first of two 8-colour Nilpeter FA4 lines was installed in 2006, with the second, identically specified 420mm press in 2008. Both include two-position hot and cold foil capability, rotary embossing, a moveable screen printing capacity, die cutting, and the facility to over-laminate.

“The Nilpeter presses immediately attracted longer run work, taking us for the first time into millions of labels, but they also posed a problem – that of waste management, which on the type of substrate we use can be very costly,” explained Josep Varias. In addition, over-laminating was a new technique for the company, with further potential for expensive waste. “We knew we had to run non-stop to maximize the productivity of the presses, but needed a system that would cope with laminating and foiling,” he added.

After investigating the options, the company made its choice based on the experience of an existing user, and signed a purchase order with Martin Automatic at Labelexpo 2009 in Brussels. The package of equipment consisted of an MBSF (F for Film) automatic unwind/butt splicer, an MLS automatic lap splicer, and an LRD automatic turret rewinder. However, the choosing and ordering of the Martin equipment proved to be the easy part.

The installation was pioneering in that an MLS unit had never before been mounted on the Nilpeter overhead rail system, and it took careful negotiation and close cooperation by the two engineering departments to ensure that all machine tolerances were not exceeded. To prove the integrity of the calculations, the Martin MLS unit was installed in sections. At each stage, print tests were carried out and

measurements taken of any press deflection caused by overloading of the rails. There were none, not even when the roll loading took place, with the spindles extended to overhang the rails.

The result was a triumph for the Martin engineers, whose calculations that the MLS would not de-stabilize the Nilpeter proved well founded. “Even when using full rolls at maximum leverage, there is no drop in press speed nor print quality, and crucially, the Martin system has reduced wastage by 25 – 50 meters per roll on substrate costing €1/sqm,” commented Varias. Non-stop operation gives more consistent quality labels, and with lower wastage, more labels of saleable quality on the production floor.

Run lengths at Gráficas Varias range from 5,000 to 5 million, with 50,000 as a typical job size on the Nilpeter FA4s. According to the company, a 1 million run would require around 30 roll changes, so on an investment close to €300,000, Josep Varias sees a pay-back period of three to four years on double shift working. “I base this calculation purely on the reduced material wastage on-press – it excludes saved production time and the downstream savings enjoyed on processes like inspection and rewinding, which would add significantly to the benefits, and improve the ROI still further,” he added.

The Martin MLS at Gráficas Varias is only the second to be installed in Europe. On complex jobs it runs at 30 – 40 m/min, so roll changes are infrequent, but the substrate being used is very expensive, according to Varias. “We shall continue to focus on the wine and liquor business as our plant is purposely equipped to produce the high quality, value added labels that this market demands. We installed an HP-Indigo line in 2007, and we see narrow web as the future,” he concluded.

Today, the company employs 90 staff in a 5,400 sqm plant in the Poligano Industrial area ‘Can Ferré’ and enjoys annual sales in excess of €8.7m. Turnover has increased by 7.5% in the last year and the target is 9% for 2011, a benefit drawn from the establishment of a Sales Department in 2009.

With ambitious plans for growth, Gráficas Varias confirms it has placed an order with Martin Automatic for an identical three-unit package of equipment for its second Nilpeter press. According to Josep Varias: “The first installation made such a convincing case for itself that it was best commercial practice to invest in the same technology for the new press.”

www.martinautomatic.com

The Martin Automatic MLS fitted to the overhead rail system of a Nilpeter FA4 at Graficas Varias was the first installation of its type. It has no effect on print speed of accuracy and saves 25 – 50 meters of substrate per roll change.

EskoArtwork Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves Receives Award

EskoArtwork is proud to announce that its Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves is the recipient of a 2011 Printing Industries of America InterTech(TM) Technology Award. Since 1978 the InterTech(TM) Technology Awards sponsored by Printing Industries of America have honored the development of technologies predicted to have a major impact on the graphic arts and related industries. More than 80% of technologies that receive an award experience continued commercial success in the marketplace.

"We are very pleased and honored that, once again, an EskoArtwork product has received an InterTech Award. And, it is even more rewarding because Enfocus Switch --from a business unit of EskoArtwork-- has also received an InterTech Technology Award this year," comments Carsten Knudsen, EskoArtwork

Page 37: TLMI Holds Sold Out Technical Conference in Chicagostatic.webfulfillment.com/tlmi/blogs.dir/31/files/2012/... · 2014-01-03 · shrink sleeves will grow. • We currently do not use

President and CEO. "However, most important to EskoArtwork is that these products have contributed to our customers' successes. In the case of EskoArtwork Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves, it remedies a very significant pain point for many package printers."

"The judges immediately understood the innovations behind Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves," comments Mark Bohan, Vice President, Technology and Research, Printing Industries of America. "As one judge commented, 'Have you ever tried to create shrink sleeves manually? It's a nightmare. Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves offers a dramatic change to a process that has been done inefficiently for many years.' They were impressed with the math behind it, the ability to work well with asymmetrical packaging and the calculations to predict hue and color shift based on stretching."

The global $3 billion shrink sleeve market is growing at about 7% a year. EskoArtwork's Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves creates artwork for shrink sleeves (labels that are placed around a package or packages and shrunk around them during production). Designers and prepress professionals can quickly create, test, analyze, communicate and produce designs with 3D visuals, without the need to conduct physical test runs.

Designing and printing shrink sleeves is difficult, complex and labor-intensive process, involving a number of trial and error steps to get the design right, resulting in long lead times. Designers create grids on the shrink sleeve material, wrap it around the container, run it through a shrink sleeve tunnel, measure the distortion, and try to anamorphically size graphic elements based upon these measurements. The design is tested -- often requiring plates and press time -- and usually rerun many times. There's the real potential of damaging brand integrity if the process is not handled correctly.

Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves accommodates asymmetrical shapes and multipacks, and works in 3D from start to finish. It also works with a wide variety of substrates, taking into consideration the specific shrinking properties of each.

With Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves, it is no longer necessary to manually create test films. Designers aren't working blindly in 2D, nor constrained. The pre-distortion can handle much more complex cases, resulting in more creative designs on more sophisticated containers, offering greater shelf appeal -- and stronger sales. The 3D images accurately predicting the end-result can be used to approve designs faster and cheaper than making and shipping mock-ups. Less experienced printers can enter the sleeve label market.

Thus, Studio toolkit for Shrink Sleeves fits into existing design and prepress workflows, saving hours of operator time and weeks of design lead time. This can generate the brand owner significant revenues if a product can be launched earlier, and save the trade shop thousands in costs.

"Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves has helped us considerably during the design process. Since we can see how everything will fall on the bottle, it gives us more design freedom," explains Amy Manchester, Lead Technician, Exopack Graphics Center, Spartanburg, SC. "We can use more of the 'real estate' on the package; we aren't confined to a small area. The 3D mock-up is so realistic that our customers see upfront what it will look like before anything is printed. It's a definite 'wow' factor. The best part is there's no expense to show a 3D mock-up."

"Before Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves, we would take a material sample and create a grid on film, shrink wrap it on to the product, and then measure the distortion of the sleeve off the grid. Sometimes we got it right, and sometimes we didn't. When the distortion didn't work, we would have to redo the art and start from scratch. It wasn't unusual to do two to three test runs to get it right," recalls Greg Swindle,

Production Manager, Total Quality Labels. "With Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves, preparing art for shrink sleeves is not any more time consuming than preparing art for any other job. Shrink sleeve jobs now take us 2-3 hours, instead of 20-24 hours."

"Clients are giving us shorter and shorter deadlines to produce work for new product launches. So, within the time frame we have, Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves helps us work more efficiently and optimize artwork more easily," points out Matthieu Abiteboul, Managing Director, CEISA PACKAGING, the first beta user of Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves. "The 3-D artwork created by Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves helps us explain to our customers why we suggest certain changes to artwork; modifying the placement of certain items. When we anticipate a problem, we show the original design and demonstrate an alternative solution. Usually, we can show new designs on the same day they have been requested, sending them electronically to the clients' desks. The design agency and marketing departments are always happy with the result, and understand why it is the best design for production. They are part of the process."

"We are thrilled that the judges appreciated the testimonials from users of Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves," concludes Kris Van Bael, EskoArtwork Product Manager, 3D and Image Retouching. "The judges understood that Studio Toolkit for Shrink Sleeves fits a need for a growth industry. When you can reduce design time and prepress time from as many as ten cycles to one cycle, and offer more freedom when designing using a 3D viewer, this is a huge cost saver for a growing packaging market that will be here for quite a while."

"From hardware, such as our CDI flexo plate imagers, to Samba screening technology, to software such as our Neo PDF editor, and WebCenter project and collaboration solution -- among others, we are thrilled that EskoArtwork has introduced our industry to a legacy of important, worthwhile technologies that have earned InterTech Awards," concludes Knudsen.

SMART Papers Announces RIT Certification for HP Indigo Presses

SMART Papers has announced that its Kromekote Label 60-lb. IN-fusion™ premium lightweight cast-coated label and packaging papers are now RIT certified to run on HP Indigo WS4050, WS4500 and WS6000 label and packaging presses.

Kromekote® cast gloss is the first lightweight cast-coated paper to be performance certified by RIT for use on HP Indigo narrow web presses. The newly certified products are Kromekote Label for cut and stack glue-applied labels as well as Kromekote Label Converting for pressure-sensitive label applications.

The certification from the RIT Printing Applications Laboratory is important for HP Indigo narrow web press owners in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific because, for the first time, they now have access to premium, high-gloss cast-coated label stock optimized and certified for their equipment. This gives HP Indigo press owners the ability to expand their offering to customers and win new sales and profit opportunities.

Pressure-sensitive label converters must still qualify their own p/s label constructions with RIT. SMART Papers said it would provide R&D support to key converting customers.

SMART Papers is one of the world’s top producers of premium high-gloss cast-coated printing papers. Kromekote Label coated one-side (C1S) applications include standard cut and stack label, wrap or packaging applications and pressure-sensitive label stock. RIT is the world’s top printing test laboratory that certifies printing papers for use on digital printing presses.

The Kromekote Label IN-fusion certification gives HP Indigo owner/operators, specialty label and packaging printers, converters and paper/packaging distributors confidence that Kromekote Label performs well on press.

“The results were very good and this is a very good product for specialty label and packaging printers,” said Tim Richardson, Digital Printing Technologist at RIT and the chief tester of Kromekote Label. “There are no concerns with this product on any front.”

“In addition to providing a new option for label and packaging printers, this development is important for pressure-sensitive label converters,” explained Paul Simpson, Executive Vice President for SMART Papers. “HP Indigo paired with Kromekote IN-fusion produces a compelling label solution for label and packaging printers, converters and distributors.”

RIT put Kromekote Label 60-lb. IN-fusion through an extensive battery of tests and found that it performed in the highest possible category for coated substrates. Under a variety of test conditions, ink adhesion and press runability were strong; impacts on press consumables, primarily blankets, were minimal, the RIT study found.

IN-fusion papers are optimized for HP Indigo presses and are compatible with traditional offset and laser presses. The papers feature an additive that is infused into the paper surface and fibers, penetrating the entire sheet and eliminating the need for surface treatments that can limit shelf life.

Kromekote cast gloss is a global print industry standard, invented 80 years ago and continuously improved since. It features a mirror-smooth print surface and delivers superior sheet stability for optimized printing, die-cutting and high-speed filling line performance. The absorbent, fast-drying surface is compatible with HP Indigo inks, producing camera-true, super-sharp print images, brilliant color reproduction and fine screens. Kromekote is also a top-performing media for applying embossing foils, aqueous, UV and varnish coatings.

In view of the increasingly fierce competition within the label printing industry, many label printers are under constant pressure to improve their production strategies and boost their productivity. Efficient processes, effective cost control, minimal waste, consistently high quality and excellent reliability are now more than ever the cornerstones of business success for today's label printers – often along with impressive innovative strength. At Labelexpo Europe 2011 in Brussels, Gallus are showcasing a record number of innovations.

The highly successful market launch of the Gallus ECS 340 will enter its next stage at Labelexpo Europe 2011. In 2009, state-of-the-art technologies and construction materials new to the label industry, such as technical granite, led to the creation of a highly productive and innovative machine concept with a spellbinding design. The new era of cost-efficient commodity label manufacture that was heralded at the time has now become an integral part of everyday operations for many Gallus ECS 340 users.

Numerous innovative further developments will be on show at Labelexpo Europe 2011 – impressive proof of the close, cooperative relationship Gallus enjoys with its customers. This also results in a wider range of applications for the Gallus ECS 340, with key additional options such as automatic register control, hot-air drying, sheet delivery and other items.

Gallus will also be using Labelexpo to highlight various aspects of digitisation in label manufacture. At the Gallus stand, Heidelberg will be exhibiting Linoprint's DriveLine B reel-fed press. Primarily used in pharmaceutical applications to date, it enables complete personalisation of customer data on packaging.

Another key aspect in boosting productivity is the highly promising digital workflow solution. This workflow connects the label press directly to the production planning and further processing stages. In addition, the system provides a clear overview of the current production status. This allows virtually the entire job to be processed digitally, which saves time and reduces workloads.

Gallus will also be exhibiting a converting unit for processing digitally printed labels that will set new standards in terms of productivity. The new Gallus EM 430 S with its high-tech short-web concept will be unveiled to the public at the event. With its shorter web path in the press and faster response times for register adjustment, this latest Gallus short-web solution significantly reduces waste, which also leads to a substantial improvement in productivity. A newly integrated UV drying system sets new standards in terms of energy efficiency and plays a key role in stabilising the entire printing process – another factor in increasing productivity.

This is supported by the Gallus Group's new generation of control systems. Already in use in the Gallus ECS 340, it offers Gallus customers comprehensive web-based support via the Gallus hotline and thus increases the press's overall availability.

Investing in the latest presses can significantly boost efficiency and thus lower production costs. The Gallus RCS 330/430 combines a limitless range of applications with a high level of automation to deliver maximum productivity. The ability to combine printing and finishing processes almost at will makes the Gallus RCS 330/430 a real all-rounder at the highest possible level. EFI and Xerox Bring the Full Power of the Web to Print Providers

EFI has announced it has teamed with Xerox Corporation to provide customers worldwide with the EFI Digital StoreFront™ (DSF) Web-to-Print solution, giving print providers a new front door to their business. Available first in the United States, Xerox Corporation’s direct sales team and channel partners are now offering the award-winning solution.

DSF is one of the leading Web-to-Print products for the printing industry, with more than 3,000 printing sites worldwide. DSF is used by both commercial printing establishments as well as in-plants, providing a digital on-ramp for customers to connect with their preferred print provider. The solution eases print job specification and file handling for the customer while automating workflow at the printer. With DSF, printers can provide proactive job status via the Web and customers are given better visibility into the production process via online job tracking. With integration with XMPie®, a Xerox Company, customers have a powerful variable data printing and cross-media personalization tool available as an optional module.

“We recognize the market demand for robust and user-friendly Web-to-Print offerings,” said Elizabeth Fox, Vice President, Solutions Business Unit, Xerox Corporation. “Paired with Xerox’s digital printing expertise, DSF brings the benefits of Web-to-Print to users who, in turn, can quickly respond and address their customers’ needs.”

The Southwest Region of Pepsi Beverages Company recently upgraded their production center with a new Fiery-driven Xerox DC5000™ Digital Press and Digital StoreFront, relying on the expertise of Arizona Office Technologies (AOT), a full-service document technology provider. More than 1,500 sales people utilize the Pepsi production center for Point-of-Sale (POS) pieces of various sizes and shapes.

“Before DSF, sales people were sending job requests in via email, ‘post it’ notes, and the like, and swamping the print shop operator with calls,” said Peter Tunkey, Customer Marketing Manager at Pepsi Beverages Company. “Now with DSF, each sales person can log-on and see the various POS jobs relating to their accounts, as well as a list of other standardized printing projects, and they can quickly submit orders and track them online. This has eliminated multiple errors and significantly improved quality and workflow efficiency. Our turnaround has dropped from an average of 10 business days to three, enabling us to double our production of items.”

“In today’s highly competitive marketplace, print service providers need to rely on automation to keep costs down and margins high. EFI Digital StoreFront enables this automation to begin at the customer’s desktop, allowing providers to successfully extend their services to the Web while streamlining their production workflow,” said Marc Olin, Senior Vice President and General Manager of APPS, EFI. “With the powerful sales and channel network of Xerox now offering DSF, together with Fiery digital print servers, more print service providers than ever before will benefit from this critical business solution.”

A simple interface allows print customers to submit digital files from their PC or Macintosh computers, view PDF proofs of their documents for immediate review and approval, and easily enter their own job specifications for production and finishing. Once that information is entered, DSF creates a production job ticket and the file is automatically submitted into the print center's workflow, billing systems, print servers and output devices.

DSF provides integration with EFI’s Fiery and MIS solutions – the system creates an “end-to-end” content and commerce workflow from the desktop of the printer’s customer directly to Monarch, Pace™, Radius and PrintSmith™ print management systems, to Fiery controllers for digital page production, and to VUTEk®, Rastek™ and Jetrion® printers with Fiery XF RIPs for digital inkjet production.
