Hello Everyone!! And welcome to this sport car tire modeling tutorial, In this tutorial I will show
you how to create realistic looking sport car tire in Maya, I tried to explain every necessary
things with visual screen shoots I hope this could helps you to grasp it easily during modeling.
I have made the same tutorial for 3ds max users with a little different modeling technique which
you can read on www.3dtutorials.sk after few weeks time. So let’s get started the modeling ofrim and tire!!
Step 1: Open up Maya any version regardless, and then go to (Create>>Polygon
Primitives>>Cylinder) then apply the same setting as image showing below.

Step 2: Right click and from pop up menus choose Face as below
Step 3: Now select the top face and then go to (Edit Mesh>>Extrude) like the image below...
Note: in the image below you can see I haven't selected (Keep Faces Together) I assume you
keep the (Keep Faces Together) checked otherwise you will compensate the modeling time while
you apply smooth. Once again make sure your (Keep Faces Together) is checked.

Step 4: Once you hit extrude you will see nothing, now change your transformation to scale and
then move it inside like the image illustrating below.

Step 6: Now extrude one more time and then use scale to shrink the face inside a bit to make the
gap, like in the picture indicating below.
Step 7: Extrude it 2 more times upward for the height, On the Top extrude then scale it downwhich you did above, then do one more extrude and scale it down

Step 8: Right click and from the pop up menu choose vertex. Now select the mid vertices like the
one indicating below then in the top or side view move the selected vertices forward

Step 9: Ok now go to face mode again and then select the faces
Step 10: Go to Extrude face option then do the same settings as below and hit extrude.
Step 11: Now move the faces out and go to vertex mode and then select the indicated vertices

Step 12: Now move them downwards like shown below
Step 13: Now extrude 2 or 3 more times then locate the vertices

Step 14: Again extrude the faces a little bit 2 or 3 more times to give the rim a bit more
smoothness when apply smooth
Step 15: Go to the top view and selected the faces indicating below

Step 16: Again go to extrude face option and do the same settings as below and hit extrude
Now you should see something like this

Step 18: It's time to create the bolts, Create a cylinder with same settings as shown below andmake a sphere on the top of the cylinder

Step 19: Select both of them and do combine operation
Step 20: Go to the top view port and then place the bolt where you feel better and then hit
(Insert) key from your keyboard to change the pivot point of bolt. Once you hit insert with the Xkey pressed move the pivot point to Mayas origin

Step 21: Go to the Modify and hit (Freeze Transformations) like the one below
Step 22: In the top view hit CTRL+D to copy the bolts and manually rotate them like the picture below.

Step 23: Ok its time to create the wheel go to (create>>Polygon Primitives>>Pipe) with the samesettings

Step 24: Now select the indicated vertices and move them to sides as below
Step 25: Select the shown faces and then extrude 3 times with different scale size in the width as
the picture illustrating below

Step 26: With the wheel selected, Go to mesh and then choose smooth option. Make sure
division levels are set to 1

Step 27: Go to the face mode and then Select the faces on the tire and extrude 3 times and change
the width scale

Step 28: It's time to start working on tire, once again create a pipe then apply the settings as theimage showing below

Step 29: Now Go to edge mode and select the 2 indicated edges in the image below then with
CTRL right mouse button choose (Edge Loop Utilities)

Then Choose as below
Step 30: Now all of your side edges should be selected. Still with the edges selected go to (Edit
Mesh>>Bevel Option box) and do the rest as the picture illustrating below and hit bevel.

Now the edges should look more smooth as below
Step 31: Go to the vertex mode and then in the top view select the mid vertices and pull them out
one by one to give it a bit realism

Step 32: Now its time to create the treads go to front view and create a cube with the same
settings as below
Step 33: Go to vertex mode and move the vertices like the image below
Step 34: Duplicate the top tread and bring it to bottom then create 2 more cubes in between like
the picture showing you below. Note: you are more then welcome if you like to bevel the edgesof treads to give it more detail

Step 35: With the all treads selected and combine them as below
Step 36: With the treads selected go to (Edit>>Duplicate Special Option Box) and then in the
rotation Y Axis give the value of 9 and in the number of copies put the value of 40 as below in
the last hit duplicate special.

Step 37: Now your treads should copied around the tire nicely like the image showing below

bump map
I just add the bump map then applied cylindrical UV texturing and took a snapshot of it and
bring it to Photoshop to fix the errors and then saved my image and in the last I applied as bump
map. as you can see I added a break disk I don't feel it necessary to explain, since its pretty easy
to model if you familiar with modeling tools in Maya.
