I do have happy news for the Region, however. In January the NAME Board approved Amanda Burt as the Region-E1 Maryland State Representative. FROM MARYLAND… Hope you all have started on a Happy New Year and are working on your mini's. We celebrated the Holiday's with our 14th Annual Holiday Party at Bullocks on December 7th. We had a happy group of folks making a Woodsy Santa Scene. We also had exhibits and a very nice miniature sale. Unfortunately, Santa had a trip to the hospital this season and was unable to attend our party. But he and Mrs. Claus are back at the workshop and doing quite well. We have been inspired by a project for next year's party already and have started making plans. We are changing the style a bit. We are going to have a 1/12th scale toy exchange; so start thinking about making 12 or so toys to trade. And perhaps a tray sale; we do love to shop!!! (A tray sale means you put whatever you want to sell on a tray - Xerox box tops or cookie sheets work well. You can reload it, but no bigger display. You can sell your hand-crafted items, your overstock or extra toys!!). Hoping to see you in the New Year to share some smiles and miniatures. See photos of the 2019 Holiday Party below and on page 3. From Laurie Sisson of Mt. Vernon Miniatures Intl… This was a project I did with my granddaughter this Christmas. I like the idea of introducing children to miniatures and projects. It helps them to appreciate our projects.

Children's Project: Pizza for Dolls Illustrations by Megan Sisson, Age 11 Save and clean the ends from Crescent roll packages. These are the metal disk ends. Save and clean the round makeup pans from used compact powders. I used Pinterest to find a Pizza box pattern that fit the metal disks. Megan chose to decorate her own. We then located and sized some pizza photos. We printed boxes and pizza onto cardstock. (Or, for a much more involved project, you can make pizza from Fimo.) Easy project. However, Grandma used her sharp blade to score the fold lines and we packed the boxes flat to fit in her suitcase to send home.

Also from Laurie… When the online Quarter Scale Connection group offered its project for December, Laurie took an original “orphan” piece and made it all come together. Her plan was to honor the original piece by reusing as much as possible. Sometimes, just a repaint was needed to make it fit. Before After

Mt. Vernon Miniatures Club Member Featured in Documentary Film By Mary Paris Mount Vernon Miniatures Club member Sharon Frazier and her friend and collaborator, Linwood Smith, are featured in a new documentary film called “Our Alexandria” by Emmy award-winning filmmaker Robin Hamilton. The film was premiered before a standing-room-only audience at the Alexandria history museum, The Lyceum. The film features an extraordinary collection of more than 25 dollhouses created by Sharon and Linwood that lovingly depict the homes and businesses of segregated Alexandria, Virginia, where the pair grew up. https://vimeo.com/289552823 (continued on page 6)

Sharon and Linwood worked together for more than 25 years recreating in miniature the homes and businesses they knew as children. Linwood constructed the buildings and Sharon created the miniature scenes. Among the dollhouses created by them are the barbershop and the beauty parlor, the doctor’s office, public library, church, the dressmaker’s shop, and several homes. The miniatures have been on display a number of times at the Alexandria Black History Museum. Unveiled at the documentary film premier was Sharon and Linwood’s most ambitious project yet -- the swimming pool that was built for black children after two young black boys drowned in the Potomac River. Photos here show their amazing attention to detail.

The office where swimmers check in Sharon even included a popcorn machine so swimmers could have a snack
