Regional Coordinators’ Corner

This will be our final column. We have been your RCs for the past four years and have enjoyed getting to know everyone, participating in shows and events throughout the Region and generally having a good time playing with dollhouses with our mini friends.

We would like to thank all of the wonderful folks who have labored on committees, created tote bag favors, donated door prizes, written articles, submitted pictures, and given so freely of their time and talents in order to provide so many varied activities for our members to enjoy. We hope you will all support your new Regional team with the same enthusiasm and energy that you have shown to us.

Maryland State Day 2010: “Design This Space”

“Design This Space” was a project that brought out the creativity in all of the workshop participants. Color choices ran the gamut from bright yellows and blues to more muted tones, and the plans for furnishing the interiors were as numerous as those in attendance. The Committee is looking forward to seeing the finished projects displayed at a future event!

The Friday night roundtables offered kits for participants to use in their projects and the Garage Sale (which continued into Saturday) offered a myriad of bargains. The Garage Sale and the Silent Auction garnered $300 each for the Region.

Participants enjoyed shopping at the dealer tables, which featured a variety of accessories, most in half-inch scale.

The exhibit tables were crowded with completed projects from previous State Days, including the Baltimore Row House, Beyond the Garden Wall, A Wine-Tasting in Virginia and the Wine Cellar from North Carolina.

Special thanks go to Dan Zerkel who designed this year’s project and hand-made the garage doors for each kit!

FALL FUN DAY, Region E-1, Saturday, September 11, 2010Join us for Fun Day 2010. Our project, “Three Gables,” is an adaptation in ½” scale of an original 1” scale Ron Mummert design. Don Greenfield based his adaptation on a picture that he saw in an article in MINIATURE COLLECTOR. “Three Gables” is a series of three small scale shops nestled together in a corner. The possibilities for creative decoration are endless.

If you are one of those who have to put electricity in all your projects, an extra package for electrification can be ordered for $25.  Acrylic covers also available at a cost of $25.

Come join us for a fun day and then shop on Sunday to fill your creation with accessories.

The Fun Day takes place the day before Molly Cromwell’s Baltimore Festival on Sunday, September 12, 2010, at the Crowne Plaza, 2004 Greenspring Drive, Lutherville, MD 21093.  Directions: I-83 to Exit 16A, Timonium Road.  Take the first right onto Greenspring to hotel.Book your sleeping room now at the show rate: 410-252-7373.

Fall Fun Day, September 11, 2010

Region E-1 will present a special Fun Day project featuring the “Three Gables” designed by Ron Mummert and adapted to half inch scale by Donald Greenfield. The Fun Day will be held in conjunction with Molly Cromwell’s Baltimore Festival of Miniatures on September 11, 2010. Registration opens May 1, 2010, and is limited to 60 participants. A registration form is shown below or can be found at http://www.nameregione1.org . For further information about attending the workshop, contact Romaine Eyler at [email protected] or (410) 848-7088.

Fun Day is held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 2004 Greenspring Drive, Timonium, MD, the day before the Molly Cromwell Maryland Miniature Festival, at the same hotel.

Westminster, MD 21157National Name Day

The purpose of this event is to welcome all NAME members, old and new, and to offer them a special members-only project. NAME members all across the country will meet on the weekend of October 2-3, 2010, to work on the same project.

The project is a hutch designed by Debbie Young. Plans and one sample kit will be made available to any club or individual member desiring to host a NAME Day event. The kit for the sample will be available in 1-inch scale only; however, plans will be available so that the hutch can be made in 1”, ½” and ¼” scales. The event will work somewhat like a State Day or Mini Weekend. Each sponsoring club or group will decided how they want to develop the hutch project, secure a location, organize the event, and set a reasonable price. One group might want to rent a room, paint the hutch black, fill it with Halloween items and have a Halloween party complete with costumes. Another group might want to meet at their local miniature shop, do a shabby chic hutch, and focus on painting china; while another group may choose to meet at a camp and spend the whole weekend creating woodsy themed accessories for their hutch. Some clubs may choose to incorporate the hutch and its accessories into their club meeting. You are free to make your day whatever you would like it to be, using the hutch as a starting point, your creativity for accessorizing it, and your enthusiasm to make this a fun day for all involved. The great thing about this project is its flexibility, which allows for a variety of finishing techniques and creativity in accessorizing. Your excitement and individual tastes are sure to shine through. The hutch can be used in many ways; as a stand-alone showcasing a collection, vignette, shadow box, roombox, or in a picture frame scene. Anything goes!

Events are in the planning stages for Maryland (Olivia Wall, [email protected]); Northern Virginia (George Pendergraph, [email protected], and Donna Lulchuk, [email protected]); and Southern Virginia (Cindy Lucas, [email protected]). These events are planned to be open to all NAME members in our Region. If you or your group cannot attend one of these larger functions or would prefer to sponsor your own smaller event, the Regional Coordinators and State Representatives can help you plan your program and get the kits that you will need. Individuals may order a kit to work on in their own home on October 2 or 3, 2010, and there will also be an on-line option for those members who are unable to participate in a group setting. Further details will be in the next issue of the MINIATURE GAZETTE, on the NAME website, and at www.nameregione1.org. Kits are not expected to be available until middle to late September, but definitely in time for your event.

6

Sneak Peek: the Maryland Committee is planning an “Everything Maryland” theme for their workshop. The hutch on the left is one interpretation of that theme.

Your regional team is available to assist you in your planning and can help you get the word out to NAME members in your area.

CLUB HAPPENINGS

My Workshop Experience~ Mary Myers

I attended Molly Cromwell's show in Timonium last fall and had a blast.  I wanted to learn some new skills, so I signed up for M.R. Daniels Tuscan Room Box.  She was teaching stucco and "tile" flooring, both techniques I plan to use in future projects.  She gave us lots of creative room; at first I was uncomfortable with this, I like limits and guidelines when I start new things.  But it worked out really well, I very happy with my new skills and I would definitely take a class from her again.  I think my room looks just like Italy!  What do you think?

Doll Club and Miniaturists by Romaine Eyler and Olivia Beard-Wall

About a year ago, Gennine from the Charm City Dolling Club in Randallstown, MD, requested that miniaturists teach a workshop showing the doll club members how to make a vignette to display their small dolls. After several meetings, it was determined that an outdoor vignette would be done with a 6-8 inch doll in mind.

(Sample made by Romaine Eyler – workshop instructor) 7

Due to the lack of meeting time the framework was completed ahead so the participants could spend time on the fun stuff. Each participant received a base, 2 walls, shrubs, tree, mulch and plenty of flowers to choose from. The eleven members who participated enjoyed the challenge.

One member, an 11 year old child attending with her

grandmother, was very creative with her garden.

Inspirations from Irelandby Mary Myers

A visit to Ireland in March of 2009 led to the inspiration of this 1” scale cottage.  I went with a group of six women in my family.  We had a fabulous time and I had a fabulous time working on this room box.  I took a Tuscan room box class and learned how to do the stucco; and had some mentoring to do my first quilt (mini or human scale).  I bought the little cottage in the china closet in Dingle near the Cliff of Moher, Ireland.  There is a little Celtic cross made of Connemara marble outside the front door that is also from Ireland.  Ah.  I just can't look at it without reminiscing.
