We meet the first Monday of the month (except for holidays) at The Lynnhaven House, Colonial Education Center, 4409 Wishart Road, Virginia Beach. Check tkgv.blogspot.com to confirm the meeting date. We may use the lot of the church next door as overflow parking. Questions? Please email us at [email protected]. DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR FEB. NEWSLETTER: JAN. 15 Please send your questions, comments, suggestions, ads, photos, stories and patterns you’d like to share to editor Sonja Barisic at [email protected] or 734 Delaware Ave., Norfolk, VA 23508. Thank you, and happy reading and knitting. Hello, Everyone! I trust that you are having a great holiday season. I am looking forward to the New Year and the events we will enjoy in our Guild. Make sure you are at our meeting on Jan. 3 at The Lynnhaven House. We will be kicking off the New Year with a look at what’s in the closet of Sue Van Olhsen, a master knitter and owner of The Knitting Corner in Virginia Beach. I’m sure it will be a VERY inspiring evening. Every year I try to challenge myself to try new things. Last year I finally got over my fear of laceweight yarn. I bought some yarn and a pattern back in 2009 but I was too scared to actually use them. I had to stare down the yarn for more than a year before I actually knit the first stitch. Lo and behold, all the people who told me it was going to surprise me and work up just fine were right. I am still mulling over how to challenge myself for 2011; perhaps I will make three sweaters. For some of you this would not be challenging but for me, that would be a lot. What are your knitting goals for the upcoming year? One great thing about the Guild is that we can help each other to be successful knitters. Finally, I am happy to announce that starting with our Feb. 7 meeting, we will meet at Westminster Canterbury. Our meeting schedule will be: Jan. 3 at The Lynnhaven House Feb. 7 at Westminster Canterbury March 7 at WMCB April 4 at WMCB May 5 at WMCB June 6 at WMCB July 11 at WMCB** Aug. 1 at WMCB Sept. 12 at WMCB** Oct. 3 at WMCB Nov. 7 at WMCB Dec. 5 at WMCB ** The July and the September meetings will be the second Monday of the month because the first Monday falls on a holiday. See you soon. Until then ... Happy Knitting and Happy Holidays! Allison Hunt

N a m e Y o u r N e w s l e t t e r We have a lot of creative thinkers in the Guild. So, put on your handknit

thinking caps and come up with ideas for what to name your monthly Guild newsletter. Please email your ideas to Sonja Barisic at [email protected] through January. The person behind the winning idea will receive a knitting-related prize.

By Kathy Brown Recently, while communicating with my fellow knitters through Facebook, I thought I would look to see if we have a TKGV group. Alas, we did not. I created one the same minute, and many of you already are

members. If you access Facebook (www.facebook.com), simply search for us under Tidewater Knitting Guild of Virginia, or click on http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_147279678658247. The group was created as a place where members can post anything they feel like sharing: photos of projects, information about ongoing sales, anything. This group is different than the one we have on Ravelry, as it is not limited to project information and anything can be posted. It is not static like a blog or a newsletter, this group happens in real time. I created the group with an “open” format and invite you all to participate. Simply click on the “join” button and I will add you. I have also included yarn shops

and designers as members, so that they can also post specials and ideas for us. Maybe we will get some special promotions just for the Guild.

Front cover, “The Little Girl's Knitting and Crochet Book,”1915

Submitted by Karen Richardson “The Little Girl's Knitting and Crochet Book,” edited by Flora Klickmann, was published in 1915. It starts with a poem:

What Happens When We Wind! There's nothing wrong about the woolWhen first it is untied; The strands are lying evenlyAnd neatly, side by side.

But you should see what happens whenWe start to wind that wool!It gets in knots that won't come out,No matter how we pull!

It keeps on slipping off our hands; It tangles left and right; And long before we're half-way throughIt's in a dreadful plight!

The ball jumps down to find the cat,And then it wanders roundAnd ties itself to table legs,And things upon the ground.

And while we're looking for the ball,Our Mother says, “Oh dear!”“You've got it in an awful mess!“You'd better bring it here.”

The book includes knitting patterns to make for dolls. You can find the patterns online at the website of the Victoria and Albert Museums in the United Kingdom. See www.vam.ac.uk/collections/fashion/features/knitting/childrens_knitting/index.html.

Happy 2011, everyone! We've got lots of things happening to start it all off. We've got a full slate of classes starting in January and continuing through the winter. Get started on something new now that the holidays are over, or challenge yourself to learn a new skill. We've got beginning garment classes, lace projects and a series of technique courses meeting on Saturdays. A little something for everyone; check the schedule online or in store to get more details. Also, we're still adding to inventory. Just into the newsroom: Berroco's Remix, a highly affordable mix of fibers that has a lovely drape and feel, with a classic tweediness. We've also finally got our missing colors of

Vintage on the shelves, including the DK weight, which has to be felt to be believed. With a good washable mix of fiber and a can't-beat price, you'd be doing yourself a favor to come get a sweater's worth while it lasts. If you missed the Thomas Joseph mugs before Christmas, never fear. There are plenty on the shelves and they're just too unbelievably cute. And bridging the gap between tchotcke and "hey, why didn't I think of this" are PolarKnits sock-sized Stitch Dots. Scaled down for sock needles and packaged in their own, well, sock. You've got to have a set for yourself. Oh, and we're starting to finalize the spring offerings… just WAIT 'til you see those goodies! Meanwhile, knit something warm for yourself and come see us. We love our KnitWits!
