Charity KnittingEach year our guild encourages members to make items for charity. Please save your donations and bring them to our October meeting (traditionally our Charity Month). We will then deliver the items to the charity programs towards the end of the year. As always, if you know of a charity that needs knitted items or one to which you have donated to in the past, please bring this to the attention of a board member. Here are a few of the groups we are supporting in 2019:

Someone recently reached out to the guild offering a large supply of yarn and needles to be used in charity projects. We are making arrangements to get those items to our May meeting, so you can pick some up for your charity knitting needs! Guild NewsApril Meeting RecapAt our April meeting we all got a lesson mosaic knitting. Rosie P brought in her copy of Barbara Walker’s book on mosaic knitting along with printed charts and instructions.

After a short discussion, guild members got out their yarn and needles to try it out. By the time our meeting was over, a few people had swatches that were pretty far along. We hope to see some finished projects at Show & Share over the next few months.

We also discussed charity knitting and topics for future meetings. Sam will be able to teach her popular dyeing class at the Welles Park Clubhouse, so stay tuned for more information as we decide on the right month for a class.

Mosaic Knitting Resources

If you couldn’t make it to our April meeting, or if you didn’t quite get it at the time, here are a few helpful articles and tips on mosaic knitting:

A Well-Kept Secret: Mosaic Knitting by Ann McDonald Kelly, available on the Interweave blog: www.interweave.com/article/knitting/tech-tip-mosaic-knitting/

Mosaic Knitting 101: The Magic of Slip Stitch Colorwork by Toby Kuhnke, available on allfreeknitting.com: www.allfreeknitting.com/Knitting-Tutorials/Mosaic-Knitting

How to Read Mosaic Knitting Charts by Helena Asmus, available on her blog: www.clearlyhelena.com/how-to-read-mosaic-knitting-charts/

You might also want to look for these books by Barbara Walker, all from Schoolhouse Press:

■ Mosaic Knitting ■ A Treasury of Knitting Patterns ■ A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns ■ Charted Knitting Designs: A Third Treasury of Knitting Patterns ■ A Fourth Treasury of Knitting Patterns

Repair RequestThe guild received a request from Anna L, who is looking for someone to help mend a blanket that she inherited. It appears to be crochet.

Please contact [email protected] if you would be able to help out or direct her to someone who can.

Any help would be appreciated!

While this book contains nothing about knitting, it has much to offer knitters. The author is a British archaeologist and medieval historian. He has participated in various BBC TV programs about historical farming and agriculture.

He examines the origins of many traditional ways of doing and making things from earlier eras, including raising sheep, spinning, weaving and basket making. Plus stone walls, haying, bee skeps (basket hives), thatching, and more.

All of this shows his deep respect for the wisdom and resourcefulness of our forebears, and the importance of the recovery of some of that lost knowledge and skill. “We’ve conflated craft with skill and design with art, when. . . it should be about more than just making. It is the power, the force, the knowledge and the wisdom behind making—the craeft behind it.”

By association, we can appreciate the value that knitting has for keeping those we care for warm and comfortable in a well-fitted garment in a throw-away fashion world, and the processes and development of the materials and skills that support it.

– Cathy G

Once again, we can be thankful for being in the midst of an amazing age of knitting documentation. This is the first volume in a series documenting the richness of knitting in Estonia, a small country on the Baltic Sea. Well-translated into English, it includes a history of Estonian knitting, garment types knitted in the 1700-1800’s, yarn, needles and colors, techniques and a dictionary of 212 stitch patterns reproduced and graphed from Estonian knitwear, all with clear photos and diagrams. The authors are textile scholars and enthusiasts. Very helpfully, the endpapers include a map of the location of the parishes of that era, so you can tell where things came from.

The history starts with nalbinding, then a pair of silk stockings at an archaeological site, and moves into the richness of museum collections documenting knitwear from the 18th-20th centuries. Girls were taught to knit before the age of 7 by family members, and the quantity and quality of knitwear was considered an impressive female accomplishment, pivotal to her future wedding festivities. Museums have collected legwarmers, socks, stocking, mittens, gloves, wrist warmers, jackets and sweaters, undergarments, hats, swaddling strips, scarves and shawls, and that’s before 20th century fashion knitting began.

In addition to studying the serious documentation it is fun for today’s knitters to see that our “latest” techniques have sometimes been around for quite a while—short rows, brioche, entrelac, lace knitting and more. I suspect that knitters have enjoyed trying out new things, just like today. Sit down and try out some of the numerous cast-ons, wonderful knit-and-purl textured patterns, stranded colorwork, inlay patterns, braids, traveling stiches, textured stitches, lace, fringes, and more. Don’t miss the sections on lovely patchwork knitting bags or the famous Haapsalu lace shawls.

This is a clear and thorough book, which offers much fun, whether a knitter aspires to dive deep into Estonian traditions or apply the elements to today’s knitting. Volume 2 is also available now, covering socks and stockings, while Volume 3 will discuss gloves and mittens. Look for these from Schoolhouse Press, and bear in mind that their prices reflect the substantial size (300 pages) and heft of these volumes and the shipping required to import them to share with the knitters of the world.
