MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Supporting Community Causes

by Bob Harper Many of us provide our photography skills in support of organizations & causes that matter to us. One that we support at Bob Harper Photography is Edmarc, a Portsmouth-based, children’s hospice. (www.edmarc.org).

The mission of Edmarc is to ease the trauma of a child’s illness or death and to support the needs of families during these times, to include helping during the bereavement process. I truly hope none of us ever experience first hand the unique services that Edmarc offers. We have supported Edmarc with our photography for the past three years, chiefly covering special events and fundraisers that help the organization in publicizing their purpose within the Hampton Roads community. Occasionally, we have been asked by the Edmarc staff to provide portraiture for Edmarc families. We are delighted to provide this service, for as we all know, a fine family portrait is priceless, especially if the family unit anticipates changes to come. So far this year, we have accomplished three maternity sessions for mothers with at-risk pregnancies. When asked to support one of these portrait sessions, we do it as normal—from consultation to a finished framed and matted portrait, usually at a 16x20 image size. Sometimes, the family purchases additional prints, but that is not required or expected.

Most of the families supported by Edmarc do not have favorable outcomes. Towards that end, one of the images we captured about a year ago an annual picnic showing a happy child with his dad

was requested to be printed for display at the child’s funeral.

Included in this brief article is an image captured on August 8 at a golf tournament fundraiser. Great photography it isn’t, but the family in the picture received priceless support from Edmarc during their time of crisis. We are glad to play a small role in supporting Edmarc’s critical mission in our area.

As professional photographers, we are often called upon to provide “free” stuff. Sometimes, though, contributing our talents is the right thing to do.

Unfortunately, there are many needs in our community for which our photography can indeed play an important role in showcasing the need. I offer that we might consider what we can do in this regard to help address some of our community needs. While we are at it, these opportunities may help us advance our photography skills (it has for me!) and bring attention and appreciation for the craft as represented by our Tidewater Chapter!

“He Sees Right Through Me” - Anne CompanionGeneral Collection -IPC 2013

Special Congrats to Anne Companion for her image

“He Sees Right Through Me” & earning her first print merit

Anne Companion is a native of Virginia, born and raised in in the city of Waynesboro. She moved to the Hampton Roads area in 1997 to study at Old Dominion University, where she completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Geology and Geography in 1999. After enjoying photography as a hobby for a number of years, Anne opened her photography business in Hampton in 2006, starting out as an on-location photographer and eventually opening her first studio in 2009. In November 2012 Anne moved into a new and bigger location in downtown Hampton. Anne's studio specializes in materni ty, newborn, and infant portraiture.

Anne is married to her husband Chris, a teacher, and has two children, Riley, 10, and Fiona, 8. Her hobbies include reading, kni t t ing , and wi ld l i fe photography.

In reference to this year’s International Print Competition, Anne says "This was my second year enter ing pr int competition; last year I didn't receive

any merits, either at the state or the national level. This year started off the same at the state competition, but I sought feedback on my top-scoring images, then entered those four images at SEPPA.

I was thrilled to learn that my favorite of those, "He Sees Right Through Me," scored an 81 and therefore sealed at SEPPA. While it turned out to be my only merit at the IPC level this year I am still very excited to have achieved my first national merit at print competition and look forward to future print competition!"
