So why is it important to save water? Water use in the summer directly impacts our wallets as well as our local environment, namely Lake Simcoe. First of all, in overwatering, we waste tap water that we pay to treat and send more water to the Water Pollution Control Centre (WPCC) via the underground sanitary sewer pipes. Whether from the tap or rain, water that flows down roadways and sidewalks leaches pollutants such as oil and drains into our sanitary sewer system to the WPCC, where it must be treated before entering the Lake, which we also pay for. Generally, Barrie conserves water in two ways: by minimizing how much tap water we use and by reducing how much water flows through the underground sanitary sewer pipes to the WPCC for treatment. Here are easy gardening tricks to keep both tap water and the WPCC usage down and Barrie’s record water conservation reputation intact: Healthy Lawns . In addition to the previously mentioned pitfalls, overwatering can weaken your lawn’s root system. Limit lawn watering to 2.5 cm weekly. . To pinpoint how much water is 2.5 cm, place a tuna can or a measuring container on your lawn and water with the sprinkler. The time it takes to fill the tuna can or reach 2.5 cm level on the container tells you how long you need to water every week. A fail safe method is to attach a timer to your sprinkler and set it for this time. . Use grass or turf that is most suited to your climate and select a mix of different grasses to make your lawn more resistant to pests, disease and drought. . Use a water efficient soaker hose or automatic irrigation system with a timer to water your lawn. . Set-up your sprinkler so it isn’t watering the sidewalks or the street. A Low-Maintenance Garden . A low-maintenance garden means less work, less watering, and less spending. Start by shopping according to your yard’s environmental condition (ie. sun exposure, shade, soil PH, drainage, etc.) . Use grey water from a rain barrel to water your garden and lawn. . Buy plants with smaller leaves as they use less water. . Herbs also need less water due to their oils that retain moisture. . When watering, direct water to the root system of your plants until saturated. . Add mulch to your garden to keep the soil moist and prevent weeds without pesticides. . Keep a rain garden by creating or finding a depressed area of your lawn and filling it with native plants. The garden will capture excess water that would otherwise run down sidewalks and streets or flood your lawn or basement. You can also connect a downspout or rain barrel overflow hose to the rain garden. our neighborhoods and parks may lead you to think that we as a City use lots of water in maintaining such beauty. But you would be wrong. Over the years, Barrie has learned to conserve water in ways that keeps the garden green without the costly hits to our budget and environment.

Secondly, too much water flowing to the WPCC increases the likelihood of sewer overflows directly into Kempenfelt Bay, the very waters we use to swim and fish in and that support our lake and local ecosystems.

Generally, Barrie conserves water in two ways: by minimizing how much tap water we use and by reducing how much water flows through the underground sanitary sewer pipes to the WPCC for treatment.

Here are easy gardening tricks to keep both tap water and the WPCC usage down and Barrie’s record water conservation reputation intact:

Healthy Lawns .

A Low-Maintenance Garden. A low-maintenance garden means less work, less watering, and less spending. Start by shopping according to your yard’s environmental condition (ie. sun

exposure, shade, soil PH, drainage, etc.)
