The institution we are a part of is one which boasts an incredible legacy that is unmatched and must therefore be preserved. Continuing this legacy, this publication is the latest version of a treasuredproduct of our Wolmer’s Girls’ School family. With the technological takeover, the production is completely digital, allowing an ease of access whether on the go or at your leisure. It is intended to be actualised every two months, providing articles that are current, fascinating and in depth. It is my hope that my team of writers and I will do you justice in capturing the moments we all love and producing content that will remain timeless.Enjoy!

Editor’s Note

Principal’s NoteThe Wolmerian is a magazine that captures the essence of school life at Wolmer’s Trust High School for Girls from a student’s perspective. The publication of the magazine was interrupted for a number of reasons. This publication is a renewal of The Wolmerian. The format clearly underscores thedifference between the last edition published in 2010 and the current edition for 2014. An e-magazine, Wow! This concept is certainly integrating technology in the classroom. It is the way our

students think. It utilizes the amazing skills and talents of our students who all begin to formally learn technological skill in first form. The Communications Club, led by their awesome Editor In Chief Mickella Anderson, has realized a dream for me. The rebirth of The Wolmerian, new format, new look, it is for today’s generation. Congratulations. Age Quod Agis.

Under the motto “Keep A Child Alive,” Angels of Love Jamaica is a non-government, non-profit charity organisation which sees to the needs of children battling critical illnesses, who are underprivileged, disadvantaged and vulnerable. The organisation launched its Wolmer’s chapter with a bang, kicking off a week of activities on Monday September 22, 2014.

The first meeting had an acceptable turnout where President Gabrielle Waite explained that in order to become a member one had to be present at a meeting as well asparticipate in a fundraiser and accompany the group on missions. Throughout the week the group formulated a coin drive which was well supported by students. On Wednesday, the group sweetened its charitable intentions to the tune of a bake sale that saw students delightingin delectable items that looked just as good as they tasted. On Friday, the group hosted a teddy bear drive which challenged students to bring a bear and give a bear to those children who may not be as fortunate to own a bear. Admirably, the initiative was well supported.

The following week, the first official meeting of the ‘Teens for Change’ initiative was held on Monday September 29, 2014.

A product of YEEP (Young Energetic and Exciting People), ‘Teens For Change’ aims at tapping into the potentials of young people, hence arming a cadre of indivuals who are capable of serving their society through literacy-based intiatives.

The group used the Upper School Hall to host its first meeting and the student turnout was impressive. The Guest Speaker for the after-noon, Miss Laurie-Ann Chin (Miss Jamaica World 2014), charged the ladies (and gentle-men) to embrace the value of volunteerism. She interacted well with the audience, enabling activities which offered students the opportunity to win tokens from her sub-charity “Glam by Angels of Love”.

Founder, Waynette Strachan, thanked Miss Chin and her organisers for having been a part of the venture. She further enlightened the students on the glories of charity work. She related that the group intends to offset its first project at the Dunrobin Community Centre, where they will assist those children who may be unable to get the educational support they need.

So, is charity the new trend? We sure hope it is! Certainly, these initiatives will be largely supported by the entire WGS community. Afterall, there’s simply no greater joy than the joy of making a difference and giving back to our society. Good work, ladies!

Did you know that within our WGS community is a body of individuals that are functioned primarily to regard your plights as a student? They may not be INDECOM or JFJ (considering we’re all just students with little experience in police work) but the Student Council body is the voice of the masses, armed and highly diligent, ready to work on your behalf.

With only a little over a month into the new school year, the body of student advocates has seen a change in goverment. Deputy Head Girl, Nidea Ellis and all prefects who held positions or membership were given the choice to either give up their membership or stay with the council and surrender the prefect badge. Nidea, sworn to uphold the standards of this fine institution as Deputy Head Girl whilst doubling as the head of the unbiased Student Council - the students’ representa-tion, was forced to make a difficult decision. She explained to The Wolmerian that the choice was one she found quite arduous, adding that she saw nothing wrong with a member of the Prefect Body being the leader of the Student Council or having any form of membership. “I believe that the student council should include members of the disciplinary body of the school so

as to have a balanced and orderly council. The seperation creates the notion that the student council is anti administration and that the prefect body is not FOR the stu-dents.” Nidea admits that she can understand where the head girl or deputy cannot be president, but ordinary prefects shouldn’t have to go too. “In my opinion, a student who serves on both would be more effective in carrying out duties as she would be open to both sides of a situation and would be more accurate in fulfilling objectives for the betterment and develop-ment of the schoool.” She, however, respected the school’s intent and stepped aside to the new president, a vibrant and enthusiastic Chrystal Smith.

With the goal of making the Stu-dent Council heard and known in the school, the newly appointed President weighed in on the conflict of interest, comparing the Prefect Body and The Student Council to police officers carrying out the law and INDECOM, the forerunners of the rights of whosoever may have been wronged by these individuals. Her belief is that the two must re-main independent of each other, yet existing as two equally important groups if fairness is to be sought to in this institution.

On a lighter note, the new Presi-dent stated that she would like to see important things happening in the school, knowing that the Student Council advocated for it. Speaking with The Wolmerian, she related that there will be vari-ous activities set up by the Student Council this year, including the annual Pickney Day, with its theme, “Pickney Day: Let’s Play”. Charac-ters from our favourite channels from our childhood, will be a part of this year’s celebration. Addition-ally, snacks and sweets will be on sale, so carry your cash and let’s walk together down memory lane.Chrystal was quick to point out, however, that this isn’t the only thing she wants the Student Coun-cil to be known for.“What my exec team and I want is for the students to approach us. Our main aim is for the students to know that there is a Student Council here at this school, we really want to listen to their concerns.”

Despite controversy, the Student Council Body seems willing and capable to represent the student population well. Can they live up to their words? The Wolmerian will keep you posted on all things Student Council and yes, no secrets will be hid.

It is almost certain that we all can tell of an encounter with the chikungunya virus whether that of our own or someone we know. In only a matter of weeks, the chikun-gunya outbreak has plagued even the highest levels of our Jamaican society leaving one to ponder, is anyone safe?

The Wolmer’s Community has had its fair share, with the month of September alone seeing numerous absences of both students and teachers, claiming to be down with the chik.

Many will say it is not mosquito related, others will tell you they were near the point of death. Is this exaggeration? What really is this chikungunya virus about? Can we protect ourselves?

The Ministry of Health advises that:

Humans and other primates are the natural hosts for the chikungunya virus. The virus is spread to humans by the bite of an infected female Aedes species mosquito.

Signs and symptomsChikungunya infection is characterised by sudden onset of: high fever severe joint pain

headache muscle pain back pain rash (about 50% of affected people).

Most people start to feel better after 7 to 10 days although some people will develop longer term joint pain. Chikungunya cannot be spread directly from person to person. There is no specific treatment for chikungu-nya infection. The use of pain medication and rest can provide relief for some of the symptoms.

So, class, do we all understand?

The Wolmerian took to the corridors of WGS to find out your thoughts on thisdreaded virus.

Beach Clean Up 2014

By: Shatoya Green

An annual memorable experience where unity and teamwork saves our environment was actualised on Saturday, September 20th, with the annual Beach Clean Up along the Palisadoes strip in Kingston. I must say, this was my first year attending this affair with the Key Club Society of WGS and I was quite impressed by the well organized day of service above self. The initiative was harmonized by The Jamaica Environment Trust (JET), a non-profit, non-government membership organiza-tion focusing largely on environmental educa-tion and advocacy. There were two main stations where a team was dispatched to a particular area along the strip.

Upon being dispatched, each leader would receive the necessary equipment such as gloves, clear and black plastic bags to dispose of the items. After the activity each team must return to the main station, where the team leader would submit the recordings to the main co-ordinator. Each member would then be provided with a banana and a bottle of water for rehydration. On the opposite side of the street, much to our delight, a man and his

wife sold commodities such as coconut water. We made several purchases because as the say-ing goes, “nothing nuh betta dan a likkle jelly wata.” Indeed, a perfect Saturday morning sim-ply because it was development at its best. If we as Jamaicans can amalgamate and take care of our island, it is a great start to something innovative in the near future. Beach Clean Up is an episode that proves to every Jamaican citizen that our country’s environment and natural resources are depended on us as a nation, as a people. Once there is unity and teamwork, anything is possible. Special thanks to JET for the arrangement of this special occurrence. Thanks to Key Club among other societies for their willing partici-pation and special thanks to God for an accident free morning.

“A clean environment, a clean nation, a clean heart.”

“Find Your Passion and Embrace Your Purity” are the words of motivation we often hear as Wolmerians. In fact, the Passion and Purity movement began right here at WGS in the school year 2008-2009. With its aim of restor-ing young people to the ideals of being passionate about their ambi-tions and embracing their purity, the non-profit organization hosts annual conferences through which they engage young minds in intel-lectual and stimulating activities. This year, the organization took to St Catherine High for a day of fun, learning and worship. Amidst the cool of the morning and the tender tint of a midday sun that soon smiled its way into being, a dance troupe commenced the conference with a performance that was nothing short of soulful. Dean of Discipline Joy Wint, on the behalf of principal Marla Campbell, welcomed patrons to the institu-tion, noting that as Roman Catho-lic, the school was founded on prin-ciples of Christ. She salutes Passion and Purity for preparing students to reflect on their holistic develop-ment. Continuing the programme, presenter Mrs Blossom White,

lecturer of the Theological Semi-nary questioned the youngsters as to the hinderances they face in achieving their desires and outlooks for their lives. Low self esteem, identity crisis, lack of motivation and bad company were the main responses given. Mrs Blossom declared that prayer and hardwork conquers all. Pastor Kevin Davis of First Assemblies of God delivered a riveting speech on “Purity and The Pursuit of Your Happiness” where he shed light on sexual and moral purity. He ensured that to avoid un-necessary negative consequences, one must make purity a life experi-ence.A team of panelists which included Ketha Edmundson, Dr Grace Rob-inson, Paula Powell, Daniel Chan, Andrew & Donette Norman and Germaine Johnson added a sense of individuality to the day’s proceed-ings by taking questions from the audience. The crop of young people questioned issues they faced such as the purity of kissing. The panel-ists responded that if it cannot be done in the presence of a parent, it is definitely impure. Other burning issues were the appropriateness of dating as a youth and how can one

be sure of true love. The panelists stated that only God can and will tell you who you should be with and until He sends a husband for you, wait to date. Singer Kimola Brown delivered a soulful performance that set the tune for the rest of the afternoon’s proceedings. Andrew Norman then took to the stage to render a call to men to be rooted and grounded in the word. He established that there needs to be mentorship among men especially the younger ones who are impure in their dress and embrace of masculinity. A casual and semi-formal fashion show was then promulgated under the theme “Holy passion for fash-ion.” A showcase of dressing mod-estly, the show ignited the interest of patrons who were also implored to stay healthy by eating healthily.

A momentous occasion that we look forward to annually, Passion and Purity Conference 2014 was a huge success. We are forever grateful to Mrs Norman and her team who have initiated such a movement within the core of our Jamaican Society. Every blessing.

If you’ve been a student at WGS for anywhere within the last twenty years, it is almost certain that you’ve made an impression of the bald-headed, chunky Science teacher with a personality that is unparalleled. Mr Wayne Johns is one of WGS’ longest standing members of staff and is most known for his catchy comebacks, incredible wit and a love for food that couldn’t be hid (pun intended).

Strutting the campus proudly to-day, is a brand new LGT (short for Look Good Teacher-a self proclaimed title) who has slimmed

down and said goodbye to the extra pounds. When asked to do an interview with The Wolmerian on his weight loss success, the now toned Science teacher was more than willing to share his story, opting even to wear his ‘slim clothes’ for the pictures.

What’s His Secret??Mr Johns: The Real LGT!

A Chunkier Mr Johns is photographed here in this 2013 picture.

14

Page 15: The Wolmerian | Sept - Oct 2014

Wolmerian: Thank you for agreeing to do this interview.

Mr Johns: The pleasure is all mine.

W: Let’s begin. Why did you choose to lose weight?

MJ: Well, trust me, the weight was never right from the begin-ning and sometimes I see an attractive lady that I would like to approach but in my mind I don’t think I look appealing to her so I wouldn’t be her first choice. I decided to make my-self the type of person that any woman would want to approach and not just rely on my good looks and sense of humor.

W: So what exactly did you do to lose weight?

MJ: I heard this thing on Barry G radio that if you drink wa-ter first thing in the mornings, it should flush your system. I started doing it for a week and I saw that my clothes began to fit loosely. Then after that my Doc-tor advised me to cut off soft drinks, pastries, rice and sugar from my diet.

W: So how long has it been since you’ve started this regime?

MJ: Well, I started in May/June of this year but the rapid weight lost was in July.

W: Do you ever get complacent?

MJ: Yes, of course. But when that happens and I eat something I shouldn’t I increase my exercise hours so if I was to do 2 hours or 2 laps up hill, I would do 4. I’m trying to burn the fat into

muscles.

W: Have you ever felt like you want to quit?

MJ: Lots of times. But I’m always encouraged by my doctor and even some past students of mine who comment on my pictures on social media sites. They say I in-spire them. I used to be hyperten-sive, even, but my doctor has cut my medication in half and in this month she says she can take me off completely. But, actually, I’ve taken myself off already (laughs) but I have them just in case I feel like I need them.

W: How has the weight lost changed your life?

MJ: It’s been great! I’ve lost over 50lbs and the ladies, especially, have become very receptive of me. I’m being approached more than normal.

W: My final question, what’s your advice to anybody who is uncom-fortable with their weight.

MJ: Eat right. Avoid excess sugars and fats. While I still believe that you can be comfortable in your body as long as you embrace it, weight isn’t something to play with. Look at Miss Kitty who said Fluffy to the world, she tricked the world and lost a bunch of weight which proves a lot.

W: Thank you Mr Johns for sitting down with us and congrats on the weight lost. We hope you keep it up.

MJ: Anytime, man. I would do a couple laps right now but I’m not wearing my running shoes.

Look at him now! Posing for our cameras is a sharp, fit and

confident Mr. Johns. Looking good, sir!

You love food but you just can’t prepare your favourite foods as tasteful as you want. The recipes are difficult and the items are out of reach. You’ve stumbled on this article and said, “Is she calling my name?”

Well, am I? Don’t worry, with a vast array of foods to choose from I am pretty sure you can find something that’s easy to make with all the basic ingredients you have at home. This issue, I will share with you a personal favorite, Rice & Chili. It’s easy to make in just SIX steps!

Simple Rice & Chili Recipe

Ingredients:

2 cups rice3cups waterPinch of salt

2 lbs minced beef3 tsp salt

3 cloves garlic (minced)1 medium tomato1 medium onion

1 medium sweet pepper1/2 Scotch Bonnet Pepper (optional)

1 cup ketchup1 tsp soy sauce

1 can kidney beans2 tsp blackpepper

1) Season mince with salt, pepper and garlic. Wrap in plastic and leave in refrigerator to

marinate for an hour.

2) Put water on stove in a pot and add a pinch of salt. Leave until it starts to boil. Wash rice

3 times then add to boiling water for about 30 mins. When the rice looks close to finish, turn down the flame to prevent burning. To test for doneness, use a fork and insert into rice to see if it is still moist. If it is, leave to cook for a few

more minutes.

3) After the hour, pour some oil (of your preference) into a skillet and add scotch bon-net pepper. This is to allow the oil to get the

flavour of the pepper.

4) Add mince and brown slightly. Add veg-etables, soy sauce and ketchup. Saute and leave

to simmer.

5) Add Kidney Beans and cook for 5 more minutes

6) Serve in a dish of your choice.

Battle of The

BestiesHow well do you know your

BFF?

20

Page 21: The Wolmerian | Sept - Oct 2014

Good friends come and go but best friends are foever! True words, right? In fact, a real friendship is born at the moment when one person can say to another, “What! You too? I thought I was the only one!” and the rest is History. Besties Kimoya-Lee Whitely and Chanice Ashman are two of a kind, with a bond that is unbreakable. The two ladies are mostly seen together in the afternoons when they journey home together.

As a matter of fact, that’s how their friend-ship started five years ago when they took the bus home together after Hollar house cheerleading practice and found the bond they shared through their love for dancing. Kimoya-Lee, 16 and Chanice, 17 are in fifth and lower sixth forms respectively, but explained that this is no barrier to their friendship. What’s most impressionable about their friendship, even, is that they were both born in the same month, under the same sign!An admirable friendship indeed, but how well do they really know each other?

Chanice is photographed left and Kimoya-Lee, right.

How it works? Either bestie will be asked five questions to answer about the other. Questions are asked separately without the presence of the other bestie. Answers are then

compared to achieve a score that will be weighed on our Friend-o-Meter.

21

Page 22: The Wolmerian | Sept - Oct 2014

These first set of questions were directed to Chanice about Kimoya.

You:a) Ask her what to dob) Go out with your friend then leave quickly to meet himc) Tell him you already have plansd) Break your date with your friendChanice’s ans: She’s my best friend and he’s probably just a random guy so I wouldn’t let her down like that. I would tell him I already have plans.Kimoya’s ans: Chanice would definitely tell him that she has plans.

1) Your friend is going to a party, what outfit would she choose from her closet?a) A shortsb) Form fitting dressc) Tightsd) JeansChanice’s ans: Short shorts because she likes to move freely and she would want to dance.Kimoya’s Ans: Definitely short shorts

All correct! Chanice scores a perfect 5/5. Can Kimoya match up?

22

Overall, their friendship weighs 9/10, a pretty solid score. We declare these two, SISTERS! May their friendship continue to hold strong.

Our Fav Celebs Who Are Feminists

Feminist: the person who believes in the social, politi-

cal and economic equality of the sexes. From Beyonce to Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift and Halle Berry, celebrities everywhere are hopping onto the feminist train and saying yes to equality of the sexes. In almost every interview today involving a female celeb the main question asked is, “Are you a feminist?” When these leading ladies are questioned on the movement, they are quick to answer an affirmative YES.

Taylor Swift

“As a teenager, I didn’t under-stand that saying you’re a femi-nist is just saying that you hope women and men will have equal rights and equal opportunities. What it seemed to me, the way it was phrased in culture, society, was that you hate men. And now, I think a lot of girls have had a feminist awakening because they

understand what the word means”

Miley Cyrus

The starlette told BBC earlier this year, “I feel like I’m one of the biggest

feminists in the world because I tell women to not be scared of anything. I’m a feminist in the way that I’m really empowering to women”

“It just means that I love myself as a female and I love

men also.”

Beyonce

In an interview with British Vogue in 2013, the Drunk in Love singer was recorded saying, “I guess I am a modern-day feminist. I do believe in equality. Why do you have to choose what type of woman you are? Why do you have to label yourself as anything? I’m just a woman and I love being a woman.” She, however, took a firm stance on the topic earlier this year with her feminist themed album and penning a post to the Shriver Report, which includes statements like, “We need to stop buying into the myth about gender equality. It

isn’t a reality yet,”

Katy Perry

In 2012 the Roar singer was quoted saying, “I am not a femi-nist, but I do believe in the power of women.” This basically says she is a feminist because the word means just that, the empowerment of women. She however corrected her stance by educating herself earlier this year and saying in an interview on Australian radio that, “I used to not really understand what that word meant, and now that I do, it just means that I love myself as a female and I also love men.” So, are you a feminist?

Come aboard the feminist train and join in the fight towards equality for women! Being female is a beautiful and powerful thing that must be celebrated. We’re not selfish man haters, we are simply a group of women who believe we are just as good as men and deserve to be treated as such.

Afterall, who run the world?? GIRLS!

I am 18 years old and I struggle with friendship. I think it is because I hold back a lot and I hardly speak what is really on my mind. I am starting to realise that each time I get close to people and I start opening up, some un-avoidable circumstances cause our relationship to become distant and it really bothers me inside. I also struggle with the process and obstacles of obtaining my dreams and career goals. I am constantly thinking about life after high school. In this ever changing, every dying world I worry about not being able to stand certain temptations. I want to maintain sexual purity and wait until I find my soulmate but with the pressures of society, I’m afraid I might give in. Please advise me Anna.

-Clueless.

Dear Clueless,

Firstly, don’t overthink. Take a minute to analyse the problem and see if it really exists. The key to making friends is to be true to yourself. Therefore, speak up and speak out. This will not only elevate your confidence but also aid in self development. Who knows how your thoughts may affect oth-ers around you. If you aren’t open and honest with yourself, you can’t build healthy relationships with others. Also, circumstances that are unavoidable are not your fault so relax. If these individuals were truly your friends then perhaps the friendship would have held strong. As it relates to career goals, start small and grow from there. Embrace your passion and live it through. Choose a career path that you are passionate about, that way you’ll never loose enthusiasm. Temptations will come but with self-discipline and faith in God you will overcome them. It would help if you join the Passion & Pu-rity movement which is aimed at molding your spiritual and sexual purity.

XOXO,Anna.

What’s up with amanda bynes??It seems our favorite childhood star

5Lisa Hanna fires back at Chronixx’s “Dumb Government” statement. Reggae artiste Chronixx has upset Culture Minister Lisa Hanna, after referring to the Jamaican Government as being ‘dumb.’ The minister tweeted, “Stop blaming and lumping all politicians together. It’s unfair and untrue.” Chronixx, we invite you to have a seat on this one. Miss Hanna is clearly no punching bag.
