For more information and how to book go to page 7 and page 12

In closing I’d like to take this opportunity to advise our members that our General Manager, Geoff Kuehner has resigned after 10 years’ service in an executive role, and an association with Broncos for well over 20 years, coming to the Club as a budding player all those years ago. His dedication and input to the successful running of the Club has been great. While the Broncos brand and our iconic Club are very powerful, the role of General Manager here is far from an easy one and very demanding at times, and on our behalf he has navigated us well during both the good and not so good times. The Board sincerely thanks him for his time here and wishes him every success and good health well into the future. Broncos Leagues Club sincerely appreciates the support of its members during this transition and as such we will continue to keep you advised of any developments as they occur.

As always there’s plenty to see and do at your Club and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Hats of every size, shape, colour and contortion have been part of racing since the turn of the 20th century. Under the style conscious reign of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, England’s Royal Ascot was the catwalk of its day, launching outrageous fashions topped by eye-catching hats.

Over 100 years later the tradition continues with the Melbourne Spring Carnival and Cup Day in particular, taking centre stage. There was one small blip in hat racing history back in the Swinging Sixties. English model Jean Shrimpton shocked the nation and created headlines

around the world. With the absence of hat, gloves and stockings, not to mention wearing a mini-skirt, she twisted the knife in the dress code of the conservative racing establishment, and it hasn’t looked back since.

Here’s a look at some of those fabulous fashions and headpieces – the good, the bad and the ugly - that could only be part of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The Brisbane Broncos are one of Australia’s most successful sporting outfits for their performance both on and off the field as the country’s most widely supported sporting club.s It’s hard to travel anywhere without spotting someone wearing supporters clothing featuring in the trademark colours and horse’s head. This is all due to the loyalty from players, staff, and supporters which make the Broncos’ brand so strong that it can be likened to a family.

Over the last six years the Old Boys have raised over $60,000 for junior rugby league with the help of its partners and in recent years have been supporting Play for a Cure which is a foundation based on sport and sporting fundraisers. The annual luncheon held at Broncos Leagues Club is one the highlights of the year and is a huge contributor to fundraising thanks to attendances of over 200 people.

This year’s event was held on Friday July 11 with guests treated to an afternoon of entertainment with host Channel 7’s Pat Welsh, comedian Lindsay Webb

and special segments including ‘Where are they Now?’ with former player Ray Herring.

Play for a Cure raises funds for nominated cancer research agencies to help in the quest to find a cure for cancer and assist cancer patients and their families. Through auctions and raffles Broncos Old Boys Coordinator Bob Cutmore and former international and State of Origin representative and commentator Ben Ikin presented a cheque for over $7,000 to Play for a Cure founder Leigh Martyn.

Built on the foundation of the brand, mateship, and rugby league are the Broncos Old Boys association. With over 70 members made up of past players, trainers, and support staff, Old Boys get together for a number of special events throughout the year to fundraise for the local sporting community and maintain Brisbane Broncos foundations.

It was 1914 when in Australia we had our first delivery of air mail, World War 1 broke out and troops were sent overseas, and Andrew Fisher became Prime Minister, but it was also the year that one of our dearest members Christina Thomas was born. Tina (as known by) is a loyal member of Broncos Leagues Club and attends the weekly bingo sessions to stay social and active. Her fellow members helped her celebrate her 100th birthday at the Club on the 14th of July. Eurogliders took the charts by storm in the 1980s. Audiences were blown away, and Grace Knight captivated fans with her ‘manic ballerina’ stage persona. In 1984, Eurogliders released their album This Island, which spawned their No. 2 hit single, “Heaven (Must Be There)”. Another Australian top ten album Absolutely , followed in 1985, which provided three further top ten singles, “We Will Together”, “The City

of Soul” and “Can’t Wait To See You”.

Grace Knight and Bernie Lynch along with their superb band, have reunited to once again captivate audiences with their sophisticated and high energy brand of pop.
