THREE companies were chosen as winners of the 3d Kitchen/Supplier magazine software promotion at AWISA 2014.

The three winners were Karmann Cabinets of Warriewood, NSW; The CabinetHouse, Sunshine Coast, QLD and Catalano Kitchens and Cabinets, Glynde, South Australia.

Congratulations to all three companies.●

RECENT exports of American hardwoods to Australia rose by 27% in value and 25% in volume in the first half of 2014 YOY.

Whilst white oak continues to be the most demanded American hardwood species in Australia, accounting for 85% of imports, ash and walnut also saw an increase. Ash imports rose by over 407 m3, almost three times more than in the same period in 2013, while walnut imports rose from 40 to 209 m3.

Rod Wiles, Director for the American Hardwood Export Council, Oceania said of the figures: “It’s always interesting to anticipate the trends in architecture and design through looking at the trade figures.

“Having just returned from Melbourne Indesign we saw some wonderful examples of Australian made furniture using white oak, ash and walnut.

“We also met with interior designers who were starting to discover ash and were enthusiastic about using it not only from an aesthetic perspective but also because of its strength and workability, which makes it very suitable for furniture and joinery.” ●

FURNWARE and Dorset have combined under the one new name – Furnware Dorset.

“As many of our valued business partners and suppliers would know, our two companies have worked extremely closely together over the years, and as separate entities sharing a common story, it made sense to combine forces,” explained Directors Ian, Paul and Ben Fooks.

“Our new trading name is Furnware Dorset (NSW) Pty Ltd, and we will be trading under this name from 1 September 2014.”

The directors, owners and staff of Furnware Dorset (NSW) Pty Ltd remain the same as Furnware.●

APPRENTICES who are enrolled in eligible NMIT and Melbourne Polytechnic courses from 1 July 2014 will be able to apply for the Trade Support Loans Programme, which has been introduced to ease financial pressure on apprentices.

Most apprentices who were eligible for Tools for Your Trade payments will now be eligible for Trade Support Loans.

Recognising that apprentices in selected industries (including carpentry) are learning key skills for Australia’s future, the federal government has introduced the Trade Support Loans (TSL) Programme for Certificate III or IV qualifications that lead to an occupation on the National Skills Needs List, or a Certificate II, III or IV qualification in agriculture or horticulture.

The TSL instalments are paid monthly in arrears over four years, and result in total payments of up to $20,000. These payments will be indexed to the Consumer Price Index from 2017.

TSL can be paid regardless of the apprentice’s age, existing worker status or income (though income level will impact when the loan must be repaid, as there is a compulsory repayment threshold).

In addition, apprentices who successfully complete their training will receive a 20% reduction of their TSL debt.●

NOVEMBER is National Asbestos Awareness Month 2014.

In the lead-up to Asbestos Awareness Day (Friday 28 November), all Australians, especially homeowners, renovators and tradies need to get to know asbestos by visiting asbestosawareness.com.au.

Take the 20 Point Asbestos Safety Check to learn how to protect everyone from exposure to dangerous asbestos fibres.

Peter Dunphy, Chair of the Asbestos Education Committee that conducts the national Asbestos Awareness campaign said: “There is no safe level of exposure to asbestos fibres. With at least one in three Australian homes containing asbestos, many homeowners, renovators, tradies and handymen are putting their health and the health of families at risk when doing home renovations, maintenance and demolition if they release dangerous asbestos dust and fibres that can be inhaled and lead to asbestos-related diseases including mesothelioma*”.

There is still a high volume of asbestos-containing building products used prior to 1987, which remain hidden dangers in homes and buildings such as garages and farm structures so it’s critical that all Australians become asbestos aware.

Asbestos could be anywhere. Under floorcoverings such as carpets, linoleum and vinyl tiles, behind wall and floor tiles, in cement floors, internal and external walls, ceilings and ceiling space (insulation), eaves, garages, roofs, around hot water pipes, fences, extensions to homes, garages, outdoor toilets, backyard and farm sheds, chook sheds and even dog kennels.

Asbestos products can also be found buried beneath and around homes leftover from the original construction when it was common practice for builders and labourers to bury broken asbestos materials on building sites which can now be exposed when digging, gardening or redeveloping land.

“If in good condition and left undisturbed, asbestos generally doesn’t pose a health risk. However, with the aging of homes, the popularity of DIY, renovating, knock-down-rebuild and with the redevelopment of old fibro home sites, it’s important that anyone working in or around homes or buildings constructed or renovated before 1987 know the dangers of asbestos and how to manage it safely,” Dunphy said.●

THE Sydney Showground was a hive of activity in early September at the Safety in Action Sydney expo.

Scores of the best thinkers, designers and implementers of all things workplace health and safety were drawn to the event from multiple sectors across Australia. Particularly in the event’s free seminars, the focus of Safety in Action Sydney was well and truly on the importance of a healthy workplace.

“This has been the strongest event by far,” said Tony Francis, the Exhibition Director. “There has been a really good cross-section of industries and the telltale sign for us of what’s important is the great number of people lining up for the seminars. People are clearly enthusiastic for education and content.”

In the panel discussion titled “Happy Workers = Higher Productivity”, Dorienne Spennato from AccessEAP emphasised the importance of a mentally healthy workplace due to the fact that a huge one in four Australians will experience an anxiety disorder at some point in their lifetime. The Mental Health Foundation Australia (MHFA) estimates anxiety and depression to be the cause of 6 million working days lost each year in Australia and 12 million days of reduced productivity.

Sharon Leadbetter of the Mental Health Association of NSW followed Spennato, citing the example of Price Waterhouse Coopers. PwC Australia found that for every $1 invested in workplace mental health, there was a $2.30 return thanks to the massive increase in productivity.

In his talk during the panel discussion on “Drugs, Drink and Work,” Phillip Collins of the Australian Drug Foundation quoted the alarming statistic that $6.04billion of the total societal cost of alcohol misuse can be attributed to the workplace sector. This accounted for much more than other sectors including criminal justice, traffic accidents and the health system. Ian Jameson from Integrity Sampling stressed that no organisation is immune from drug and alcohol misuse and offered the implementation of a “Fit for Work” policy as an effective solution.

While many visitors were engaging in topical discussions in the free seminars, others were testing out all kinds of new and exciting products and services on the showroom floor.

The hotly contested Stand Awards revealed some clear winners with the Best Stand 18m2 and under going to Millsom Materials Handling for its hoists and industrial lifting equipment. ●

Workplace health takes centre stage at Safety In Action THE figures for the global industry of

woodworking technology, processed by the Acimall Studies Office suggests all major international competitors recorded a negative trend.

Export decreased in Germany (1,715 million Euro, minus 3.1% compared to 2012), though it was compensated by a strong domestic market. The same 3.1% decrease, down to 1,111 million Euro, was also noted for export in Italy, a downward trend that had already emerged at the end of 2012 and that, unfortunately, was not mitigated by a stagnating domestic market.

Export also decreased in the USA (minus 7.5% versus 2012, for a total of 283 million Euro); moderate reduction also for Austria (minus 0.6%, 355 million Euro) and for Taiwan (minus 0.2% for a total export value of 457 million Euro).

Only China improved over 2012, with exports at 790 million Euro, up by 12.6% compared to 2012, a result that earned them the third place in the global ranking of woodworking technology exporters. So, the wood industry is still going through a phase of substantial “reflection”. Although trends are highly diversified in absolute values, we can say that recovery for the processing industry of wood and wood-based materials is still to come. ●

CIKB 2014 to advance comprehensive concepts for state-of-the-art kitchens in China.

From 5 to 7 November 2014, China International Kitchen and Bathroom Expo (CIKB), jointly organised by the China National Hardware Association (CNHA) and Koelnmesse, will be opening its doors at the renowned at Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Centre in the bustling metropolis.

Powered by Living Kitchen, Europe’s leading kitchen show in Cologne, and strongly supported by AMK, the leading trade and service association for the kitchen industry, CIKB is promoting the demand for individually planned built-in kitchens in Chinese households.

CIKB’s motto Built-In Dreams is not an empty notion. It headlines the organiser’s

comprehensive approach in providing the foreign kitchen industry an all-round platform to showcase, promote and discuss the benefits of integrated solutions against the background of visual aspects, safety issues, cooking pleasure and much more.

As the satellite event of Living Kitchen in China, CIKB not only derives the high-quality resource of exhibitors and organising experience but also obtains the powerful support from authoritative associations such as its co-organizer CNHA, the Center for Housing Industrialisation, or the China Building Decoration Association to not just pull the crowds with onsite attractions but also involve the Chinese intersections of the industry to encourage the decision-makers of the kitchen world to come.●

HOME renovations are set to boom over the next three years according to Master Builders Australia’s latest Forecast of Building and Construction.

“The new forecasts released by Master Builders predicts growth in the housing alterations and additions market of 14.9% ($96.4 billion) in value per annum on average over the forecast period to 2016/17,” Wilhelm Harnisch CEO of Master Builders Australia said.

“The robust outlook is in stark contrast to the languid performance experienced over the last three years when it contracted by an average of 3.2% per annum,” he said.

The Northern Territory is forecast to experience the strongest growth, with average yearly growth of a massive 27.8%, up from an average of

9.7% over the previous three years.

Not that far behind are NSW and WA with per annum average growth predicted to be up 19% and 18.6% respectively.

Other strong performers are expected to be the ACT (up by an average of 16.9%), Queensland (up 14.6%) and Victoria (up 12.5%). Solid but less spectacular growth is forecast for South Australia up 3.1% and Tasmania up 1.5% on average over the three years to 2016/17.

In current dollar terms, spending on alterations and additions across Australia is forecast to average more $9.6 billion per annum in the three years to 2016/17, which is nearly 38% higher than the $7.0 billion annual average for the three years to 2009/10. ●

THE Timber Veneer Association of Australia (TVAA) recently commissioned a complete overhaul of its main website, which has now gone “live” at www.timberveneer.asn.au.

The website has been updated with new publications including a second edition of A Manual for Decorative Wood Veneering Technology, released in June, 2014.

Written by Dr. Barbara Ozarska, Leader of the Forest Products Research Group at the University of Melbourne, the 147-page manual is an authoritative guide to all the factors involved in the successful use of timber veneers.

Other publications on the website include a Material Safety Data Sheet for timber veneers, and the TVAA

Product Information Manual, simply titled Veneer. This 28-page manual has also been completely revised, and provides up-to-date information for specifiers and other veneer users. Hard copies are available on request, or it can be downloaded from the website.

TVAA’s President, Rod Sharp, said he was sure the fresh look of the website would appeal to the industry at large. “Our technical publications cover a wide range and will help specifiers to achieve the best possible outcomes when using timber veneers”, Rod said.

TVAA also has a sister website at www.uniquelyveneer.com.au which showcases outstanding uses of timber veneers, drawn from the annual Australian Timber Design Awards. ●

Design & Trends

Working from home is a fast growing trend, meaning the concept of the bespoke home office has gained new significance. This precious space, often doubling as a place to keep the home accounts and a spot for the children to do their homework, is reliant on clever design, highly organised storage and task lighting to adequately fulfil all expectations.

Lincoln Sentry, specialist in all aspects of home storage and organisation, says today’s home hardware technology delivers an ingenious, unobtrusive means of increasing existing storage space while customising cabinetry for all members of the family.

According to Lincoln Sentry, the Finista Slim multi-functional aluminium system brings customised storage and work surfaces to any space, utilising every centimetre, from floor to ceiling. Comprising aluminium extrusions and brackets for drawers, cupboards, shelves and work surfaces, the stand out feature of this system is that it delivers the utmost creativity in terms of the size and shape of the office/storage components required and accommodates the most problematic

of spaces – sloping ceilings, uneven floors, tiny spaces etc

Overhead storage is another means of creating a home for more bulky items and Blum’s Aventos HK delivers enhanced user convenience in the form of upwardly opening doors that open to a wide angle and give full access to the space. For even more convenience, these can be fitted with Blum’s Servo-Drive for Aventos HK – a lift system that glides open at a single touch and closes again at the press of a small switch.

Lighting is arguably the most important element of any office space that is going to be both efficient and pleasurable to work in. Task and ambient lighting is often overlooked but Lincoln Sentry says the Hera brand of LED lighting is both affordable to install and cost-efficient to run.

The L-Pad is one of the most popular choices for home offices as it can be installed under overhead cupboards and shelves to throw light directly onto the work surface. The L-Pad is a Red Dot Design Award winner with an LED life of 30,000 hours and a choice of high gloss white or black, plus a stainless steel look finish.

The art of the home office

And finally power points – it’s almost impossible to have too many in a home office. No matter how many are required, they can be accessible without being visible. Lincoln Sentry’s range of EVOLine power ports has won the international Red Dot Design Award. Designed to be retractable when not in use, the port features a strong aluminium housing with connections for power, USB charging and data output.

Thought should also be put into maximising the use of space inside the drawers. “High quality inner dividing systems for drawers, such as Blum’s Orgaline, ensures there is a place for everything no matter how small or awkwardly shaped. It is this type of sophisticated and customdesigned storage that can increase existing storage space significantly,” said Alicia Draper, program manager for Lincoln Sentry.

“The art of creating a highly functional home office, that can cater to a number of users, is to maximise the organisational and ergonomic capacity of every centimetre of space. And the best way to achieve this is to consult a specialist like Lincoln Sentry,” she said. ●

Engineered by Hettich, ArciTech and the new Push to Open Silent function culminate in a system drawer that combines a mechanical Push to Open mechanism with the convenience and luxurious feel of Silent System.

In particular, the system impresses with narrow gaps between drawer fronts and an opening distance that's second to none. The result: classy handleless design and high user convenience from using standard ArciTech drawer elements for cost-effective production.

Convenient opening functionWorking on an all-mechanical basis, Push to Open Silent manages to do what has previously only been possible with electromechanical systems: it brings together handleless design with a high level of drawer opening and closing convenience.

The mechanism is triggered simply by pressing the drawer front. In most cases, the large self-opening distance makes

it unnecessary to pull the drawer out any further, saving time and particularly convenient if hands happen to be full. Closing the drawer automatically reloads the Push to Open mechanism before the drawer glides home in a gently softened movement.

Benefiting from cleverly devised setting capabilities, Push to Open Silent perfectly adjusts to different drawer sizes and weights. Adjustable release sensitivity and opening force provide a high level of convenience throughout. The integrated depth adjustment facility permits perfect front panel alignment with narrow gap between drawer fronts.

Push to Open Silent makes it easy to create handleless kitchens and furniture because drawers, runners, carcases and front panels can be used without having to alter them. The mechanism simply fits under the drawer base, scoring in particular where there's no room for an electromechanical system behind the drawer.

Made for the futureAn ArciTech drawer is distinguished by its excellent running action and exceptional stability. The Actro runner's prism principle gives it impressively smooth, even running performance. Catering to loading categories of 40, 60 and 80 kg, ArciTech can cope with any demand.

The broad product line-up based on a single platform now features the new silver and anthracite drawer side profile colour in addition to white. ArciTech is available in two drawer side profile and six rear panel heights. For the high-end segment, the range comes with the option of a 126 mm side profile height with Design Side in glass or TopSide and rear panel height of 250 mm. ●

The Grass Vionaro, a cubist drawer system, is a design solution for all living area and kitchen storage require-ments. The product won the approval of the expert jury of the renowned Red Dot Award, which was impressed by the minimalist overall system design. This is the fourth time that Grass has won the renowned international design prize.

The Red Dot Design Award is regarded as the ultimate accolade. The jury vpraised several features of the Vionaro drawer system – its functionality, high level of innovation, formal quality and ecological compatibility.

The experts also enthused about the slim drawer side that only measures 13 milli-metres and that is fully in line with the trend towards minimalist forms and high-quality materials for furniture interiors. The drawer sides, available with a height of up to 185 millimetres, are available in either aluminium or steel.

The single section steel drawer side is welded with state-of-the-art laser technology which provides additional stability. Vi-onaro combines all the advantages of a double-wall drawer system with the external styling and storage space of a concealed slide system. The slim, streamlined designer drawer is based on the Dynapro slide system that also won the product design Red Dot Award 2010.

Grass has always placed great value on the development of innovative products that not only react to the current market demands but actively inspire new trends. The 12 technical property rights show how many ideas and developments are incorporated in Vionaro. The Dynapro slide on which Vionaro is based also has a number of additional patents.

"Innovations are one of our main priorities. This applies to the constant optimisation of existing systems as well

as new products. The large number of patent applications shows how many trend-setting innova-tions our products involve that ultimately ensure the technological future of Grass," explained Markus Sperner, Head of Industrial Property Rights.

Before Vionaro, the jury of the Red Dot Award were already impressed by the Sensotronic comfort system, the Tiomos hinge system and the Dynapro slide system. ●

Software

Here are Pytha’s top three tips to work smarter, not harder with 3D CAD software.

1. Use the right tool for the jobMost 3D CAD programs will do most of what you need, much of the time. When considering the right software for your business, ask yourself, is it adding to or limiting what I can produce and can both new and existing members of my team learn it without large re-training costs?

Pytha 3D CAD* delivers the freedom to draw anything. It affords the flexibility to customise libraries and it has the smarts built in so no-one needs to spend time on mathematical formulas. Pytha 3D CAD integrates with all quality CAD solutions and there is rarely any need to “trade-out” of the application you have. By adding complementary solutions to your toolkit and keeping your toolkit up to date, you’ll always have the right tool for the job.

Pat Mollica, Operations Manager at Schiavello

Group said: “We were spending too much time with our existing CAD software drawing the complex products that our clients ask for. After making the switch to Pytha 3D CAD we simply wouldn’t be without it. It is incredibly flexible – we can draw and manufacture anything!”

2. Get ‘edumacated’Businesses retain their position in an aggressive marketplace by keeping up to date with advances in technology, resources and practices that support their competitive advantage.

When the team knows what they’re doing, they work smarter and enjoy more of what they do. Productivity goes up, job satisfaction goes up, errors come down, even absenteeism comes down.

Pytha 3D CAD now comes with more learning options than it ever has before to boost productivity:

• enrol in a TAFE course;• get out a free copy of

Willy’s Pytha training manual;• make use of Pytha 3D

CAD technical support and log on to the User Forum;

• complete the free, inbuilt tutorials in Pytha 3D CAD.

Lloyd Millington, a teacher of shopfitting and detailed joinery at SWSi Lidcombe TAFE. “Pytha 3D CAD is a very intuitive, logical and easy to learn CAD application. My apprentices can match their practical skills for building both on the bench and on the screen, and this serves employers and employees alike by offering lifetime career paths that keep skilled people in the industry”.

3. Make the most of your resourcesLook for an affordable option and take advantage of payment plans to free up working capital.

Whether you are a business owner watching the bottom line, or an energetic set-out operator who wants the boss to get the latest and greatest drawing app, payment plans mean good business because there are no large upfront payments.

There are tax benefits too – but speak to your accountant about those.

If you are undecided about which is the best software for

your business, payment plans also offer a great solution to eliminate decision-making-stress! You can try Pytha 3D CAD for three months to discover how powerful, easy to learn and easy to use it is for your business.

In summary, you can work smarter, not harder with 3D CAD software.

1. Use software that delivers flexibility, ease of use, and always maintain an up to date version. Pytha 3D CAD now includes smart parametrics, raytracing, free viewer and a new plotting environment.

2. Keep your skills up to date and stay productive.

3. Take advantage of payment plans to save your cashflow.

People all over the world love working with Pytha 3D CAD. It is easy to learn, it is easy to use and anyone can model and manufacture absolutely anything. It’s more affordable than ever before and payment plans mean no long term commitments.

Solid Essential for Panel Saws

The ideal entry-level solution for cabinet manufacturers looking to streamline their business by taking drawings to a panel saw.

Since its formation in 1964, the Monteleone family company has achieved remarkable business growth that has propelled the company into its current role as a national market leader. Established by brothers Reg and Ross, the company grew to include family members Geoff (1966), Murray (1969), Ken (1972) and cousin Ross Giorgio (1976).

IJF Australia started life in the South Australian suburb of Rosewater with a total of three employees. The company originally focused on domestic products. The business grew and, in 1969, relocated to Holden Hill, where it went

on to become the leading domestic joinery manufacturer in SA. By 1975 the business had also established Australia’s first modular furniture system.

In 1989, the manufacturing hub and headquarters moved to its facility at Kilburn. It was here that IJF developed its reputation as one of the nation’s leading furniture and fit-out contractors, specialising in apartment, office and hospitality projects.

2006 saw IJF acquired a manufacturing plant in Virginia, Queensland to accommodate for growth in the areas of South East Queensland and NSW.

IJF Australia celebrating 50yrs

The, in 2009, IJF moved to its current headquarters and main manufacturing facility in Wingfield. This new facility was designed to meet their changing economic and client needs in a more internationally competitive market.

Today, IJF remains a family owned business which employes over 100 staff nation-wide.

Planit’s Tony Vella started his apprenticeship with IJF Australia back in 1991 as a fresh-faced 17 year old. He was fortunate enough to work with many good people during his 19 years there and he believes that what he learnt there helped develop both his character and skill set.

“IJF has always had the reputation for starting the careers of many cabinet makers, wood machinists, polishers, designers and drafts persons,” said Tony, “teaching us not only the skills of our respective trades but also on how to successfully work together in a team environment.

“Just keeping up with conventional technology is never enough for IJF and this is why it introduced the use of Cabinetware as its primary setting out tool in 1995. Cabinetware was instrumental in improving efficiencies in the setting out of joinery ready for manufacture on both their beam saws and point to point routers.”

IJF is always looking for better ways to streamline its set-out and manufacturing of jobs. In 2004 IJF cross graded to Cabinet Vision, which allows greater control over any non-standard parts or joinery items.

“As an employee of IJF at this time, I was very much involved with the implementation, working in closely with the integrators from Planit,” said Tony.

A number of projects and landmark buildings in Australia have been fitted out by IJF Australia using both cabinetware and Cabinet Vision as its drawing and setting out tool. These projects include the Eureka Towers, Royal Children’s Hospital and RMIT Village in Victoria; Bondi Apartments, 1 Bligh Street and Sydney Wharf Apartments in NSW; the Fiona Stanley Hospital and Hotel Intercontinental in Western Australia; Hamilton Harbour in Queensland and, currently, the New Royal Adelaide Hospital in South Australia.

“IJF to this day, remains an industry partner and loyal customer of Planit. Seeing the next generation of the Monteleone family bring IJF into the future is very exciting and gives comfort in that IJF Australia is in great hands.

“The knowledge I gained from my time at IJF is put into good practice every day with Planit.”

“Happy 50 years IJF Australia” from Tony Vella and the management and staff of Planit.●

Planit would like to take this opportunity to congratulate IJF Australia on celebrating

50 years of manufacturing in South Australia.

REVIEW

When the NSW state government made the decision to re-develop Sydney’s convention and exhibition facilities at Darling Harbour, the Australian Woodworking Industry Suppliers Association was confronted with the need to decide where to hold the show in 2014. To the surprise of many, AWISA decided to hold the show in Brisbane, and the resulting event, held from 6 to 9 August this year, proved to be an outstanding success.

“As we expected, many visitors who came from Queensland and northern NSW had never been to an AWISA before, and we hope that these visitors will return to visit future AWISA’s wherever they take place,” said Geoff Holland, AWISA general manager. “Our total visitor numbers were down slightly on previous years, but this was not unexpected. There has been consolidation in the industry, plus any trade show depends on visitors that

reside within an hour or two of the venue to supply what we might call the ‘base load’ of visitors. Greater Sydney quite simply has more people working in woodworking industries than Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.

“49% of our visitors came from outside Queensland and, as in the past, about a third of all visitors spend at least two days at the show. And, from all reports, most visitors came in a mood to buy. I had reports of good levels of business being written on the floor of the show, and on top of that many visitors use the show as an opportunity to make decisions about future purchases.”

AWISA 2014 continued the tradition of the show being a high technology event. Five-axis machining, board handling and storage systems, laser and hot air technology for edgebanding, waste processing and briquetting machinery, compact vertical CNC machinery, and printing directly on to MDF and wood

were just some of the newer technologies displayed by machinery companies. Plus there was a huge range of increasingly sophisticated computer software packages presented at the show along with all the latest in hingeware, drawer systems, decorative surfaces and more in the AWISA-Design section of the show.

The next AWISA show will take place in Melbourne from 6 to 9 July 2016 and AWISA’s current plans are to return to Sydney in 2018. ●

Supplier magazine believes that the trade media has a responsibility to its readers to highlight any new development that will benefit the industry. These could be a new product, system or process, or new development in an existing technology.

While not all the selected products go on to wide use, they all represent innovations that add to the collective knowledge of the Industry.

The last AWISA (2012) gave us some interesting innovations and some of these have continued to develop. Wood Tech presented us with a flat bed printing machine. The Anderson Cojet has continued to develop and the printing resolution is now full 1080p high definition. The German Schugoma company gave us the Kanten King hot air edge banding system for laser edge tape. This technology, presented by Beyond Tools, has continued its popularity and is now available on most leading machinery. Biesse, Homag and Hebrock have developed their own systems based on the same principle. The technology is yet to be widely accepted by Australian manufacturers but is a big hit overseas. It

should not be long before Australia gets on-board. Gregory Machinery and Felder both delivered low noise planing with spiral multi-knife technology and this has become so popular that half of all new Felder machines are equipped with this new cutter-head design.

And so to the 2014 Gold Star awards.

LTRONIC GLUE SYSTEM

Holz-HerThe application of laser edgings with an invisible glue line is seen as highly desirable. Specialty co-extruded edges with 0.2mm active layer can be applied using a very expensive laser, or hot air technology that can be noisy and require a lot of compressed air. Holz-Her LTRONIC is a ‘Near Infra Red’ system to apply laser edges with no heat up time, no noise and does not require huge amounts of compressed air.

The wavelength of the NIR module is very close to the intensity of a diode laser. This world's-first technology, which is

priced competitively with a hot air system, will be in production November this year and available in Australia in 2015. It's the very latest edge banding technology without the high operating costs.

Holz-Her's LTRONIC wins a Gold Star for its innovation and clever solution to low-cost ‘laser’ edging.

SCM ACCORD 30 FX 5-AXIS MACHINE

Gabbett MachineryTen years ago you needed a masters degree to program a five-axis router. Your company also needed a significant overdraft to cover the cost of the machine. Over the years four axis machines have been introduced to the industry and we have relied on expensive single-purpose aggregates to cut mortises, tenons and produce saw-cuts on angles other than zero and 90 degrees.

The SCM five-axis machine eliminates aggregates, simplifies programming and costs less than 40% of the same machine

2014 Gold Star AwardsAfter every AWISA expo, Supplier Woodworking magazine presents its Gold Star awards for products that show excellence in innovation and value to the woodworking manufacturing sector in Australia.

four or five years ago. The machine is also fitted with a quick release vacuum system and remote set-up via a portable console.

This award recognises all machine manufacturers (including Biesse and Homag) who have worked to bring this technology down to an affordable price. It is now possible to manufacture kitchen cabinets, joinery (doors and windows) furniture or any other three-dimensional product on the one machine.

The SCM Accord 30 fx 5-axis machine wins a Gold Star for its contribution to lower cost 5-axis machining.

SENSYS 165 DEGREE HINGE

Hettich AustraliaYou might say "A hinge is just a hinge" there are so many to choose from. Modern hinges are easy to install, affordable and long-wearing.

Hard to believe, but Hettich has added a new dimension to the common cabinet hinge with its Sensys wide angle hinge. Opening to 165 degrees, the cabinet door swings well out of the way and allows the consumer to easily add or remove adjustable shelves.

Where most other hinges operate in a temperature range of 8 to 20 degrees, the Sensys works in a range of 5 to 40 degrees making it ideal for our varied Australian conditions. And while many other hinges start the soft closing action at 22 to 30 degrees, the Sensys begins its self-closing action at 35 degrees.

The Sensys hinge won two International product design awards in 2014 – the iF (Industrie Forum Design, Hannover, Germany) AND the Red Dot (Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany) awards, and now a Gold Star in Australia for its innovation and good design.

AEROTECH SYSTEM

LeucoDust is a common problem when routing on a CNC machine. The open tool cover design allows dust to settle on the work-piece, requiring hours of clean up time every week. The Leuco Aerotech is a combined turbine and clamping system for router tools available in both ISO and HSK types. The routing tool is mounted into the turbine using either a collet or hydro clamp, then the turbine mounts directly into the machine spindle. In use, the turbine action of the device lifts dust upwards where the dust extraction takes it away.

Benefits of removing dust effectively go far beyond reduced cleaning time and include operator safety; increased feed rates; less compressed air consumption; cooler machining conditions and longer tool life.

The Leuco Aerotech tool wins a Gold Star for its innovative design and contribution to a cleaner, safer workplace.

F45 ELMO III D PANEL SAW

Altendorf AustraliaThe F45 ELMO III D panel saw brings together several new and interesting developments. The new machine features a saw-blade that can be tilted to 46 degrees in either direction. Heavy work-pieces can now be sawn without turning them over and delicate pieces can always

be cut with the good side on top. This is possible because of the use of a new synchronous servo motor that is much thinner in design and allows more space under the table.

The Eco motor also draws only the power required so the machine saves energy leading to lower operating costs. An option on the new ELMO is a sliding table with vacuum clamping to hold heavy and difficult parts firmly in place. Straightening a crooked edge has never been easier.

The Altendorf ELMO III D panel saw wins a Gold Star for its innovative synchronous motor, combined with the advantages of forward tilt and vacuum holding.

SUPERSILENT SAW-BLADE

AKE AustraliaNoise control, a major OH&S issue for all manufacturers, is often difficult to achieve. The new SuperSilent diamond-tipped saw-blade from AKE Australia offers a significant contribution to noise control in panel sizing or wood cutting operations.

It was designed as a disposable saw-blade but has since been further developed to allow for sharpening. Expected tool life is 9,000 metres cutting double-coated MDF. Noise reduction of 20dB is claimed by reducing the gullet size and re-designing the tooth shape to direct the chips to the modified side of the blade that AKE calls a "chip belt".

The blade runs at 75dB when idle, about the same as a vacuum cleaner. Because the gullets are smaller than a regular blade, kickback is also reduced. AKE's Supersilent saw blade won the innovation award at Ligna 2013 and now wins a Gold Star for its contribution to machine safety in Australia.

And several special commendations....

BASELIFT ELECTRONIC LIFT SYSTEM

Linak AustraliaBench heights are not generally an issue for most people or situations. The exceptions are when different people use the same workspace. This could be in places such as hospitals, offices or restaurants where people of different body types need ergonomic working conditions. The baselift electronic lift system allows up to 100mm of vertical adjustment of kitchen benches and island bars to suit most people's preferences. The system is also used in Linak's "sit-stand" office systems designed to promote a healthy office environment by varying your worker's posture through variable height work surfaces.

Linak gets a special commendation for developing the humble lift system into a product with infinite possibilities.

PLUGTEC

Leitz Tooling SystemsPlugTec is a revolutionary new joint presented by Leitz. No specialised tools are required; the joint is a variation of the common slot mortice used in the chair manufacturing industry for decades. The "new" joint is particularly suitable for European style windows made on CNC machines. When used with Leitz RipTec tools, gluing area is increased and a joint tested by the German Rosenheim Institute achieved a bond strength of 250 kilograms. In fact, the tests were so far off the charts, the researchers at Rosenheim could not believe it! The joining method prevents twisting of the sash parts; aligning is always perfect and assembly time is reduced.

PlugTec gets an special commendation to recognise that you don't have to be selling anything to be of service to the industry. ●

REVIEW

In this article we will introduce you to these companies, tell you a little bit about them and their latest products. Somewhere in this article there will be a product that you can use to make your manufacturing either more profitable, safer, more cost-effective or of higher quality. If you did not get to AWISA in Brisbane, you must read this. If you did get to the show, this article should remind you of the leading technological developments and might cover some of those you missed. We'll write about them in alphabetical order.

AKEAKE Knebel is a family operated company that has been producing cutting tools since 1960. In 2013 their Supersilent saw-blade won several awards due to its revolutionary design and clearly obvious benefits. As the name suggests, it's super silent. It's also much safer to handle as it doesn't have the big teeth of normal saw-blades. The diamond-tipped teeth measure a mere 2mm by 2mm and look like little T-shirts. This design splits the chip and forces them to the re-designed side of the blade AKE calls a chip-belt where it's expelled as it exits the wood. With only a 2mm kerf, the blade saves material but you do need a thinner riving knife to go with it. You can only sharpen in once so it's virtually a throw-away item; however, it lasts ten times as long as a carbide-tipped blade and you don't need to spend much money on sharpening costs. The blade is quiet, long-lasting, cuts all wood and panel materials and is a brilliant adaptation of the classic saw-blade design.

AltendorfAltendorf is a bit of an institution around the world. Altendorf is to panel saws what

Hoover is to vacuum cleaners. Of course, there are other fine panel saws available but Altendorf continues to occupy a leading position with 130,000 machines in service over 108 years. Wilhelm Altendorf invented the sliding table saw in 1906 so there's plenty of experience making the machines and applying them to all areas of wood working. Altendorf is happy to explore and think "outside the box." The 2012 Altendorf 2 is an example of this willingness and although this machine is no longer produced, the knowledge acquired from the exercise has added to the company's collective knowledge about sawing wood and composite materials.

Altendorf machines have been copied by Chinese and Taiwanese manufacturers such as the Lignadorf made in Taiwan in 1988. To a certain extent, Altendorf is proud to have their machines copied as it shows the value of their product – like copying a Rolex watch. And just associating your product with the Altendorf name carries considerable weight. The Australian Woodfast company referred to their machine as "the Australian Altendorf" and during a recent AWISA, one company was promoting its new sliding table as "just like an Altendorf".

This year, Altendorf presented yet another model in its long history. The Altendorf F45 ELMO III D panel saw features a saw-blade that can be tilted to 46 degrees in either direction. This is possible because of a new, much thinner synchronous servo motor allowing more space under the table.

The motor is in line with the German VDMA BLUecoMPETENCE initiative and is 15% more efficient than previous

Altendorf motors. The Eco motor also draws only the power required so the machine saves energy leading to lower operating costs. Heavy work-pieces can now be sawn without turning them over and expensive materials can always be cut with the good side on top. An option on the new ELMO is a sliding table with vacuum clamping to hold heavy and difficult parts firmly in place.

Sadly, the very friendly and knowledgeable Wilfried Meyer has retired and probably will not make the trip to AWISA again. However, with Vit Kafka at the helm, himself a veteran of 20 years with Altendorf, the company is in good hands.

Becker PumpsBecker Pumps are one of the most popular brands of vacuum pumps for the woodworking industry and the company has been making quality pumps for over 40 years. Look at your CNC equipment, you might find you have one already. Becker works towards constant improvement of its product. This forward thinking means that with a Becker pump

you get easy access to greasing points; a cooler running pump; a larger filter inlet meaning fewer filter changes; greater vacuum capacity and a clear cover so you can see if the filter needs changing. And because Becker also manufactures surgical suction systems and pumps for other high-output industries such as packaging, printing and plastics, it's fair to say that the product meets the most stringent operating standards.

Beyond ToolsThe WA based Beyond Tools was established in 1986 and is family owned and operated. In 2012 they wowed us with the Shughoma hot air laser edging technology and, while the equipment is yet to take off here; the whole industry is talking about it.

Beyond Tools sells a complete range of workshop tools and equipment; if you can't find it there, it probably doesn't exist. For me, one of the most interesting pieces of equipment was the "i-carver" engraver by Geetech. It's not much money for a small piece of equipment that has a ton of potential. From between $6000 to $7000 you can have a machine that is capable of adding customisable carved panels to any piece of furniture. The possibilities to use this simple machine are endless and it's the kind of machine that I could see in my own workshop. Load a photo and start carving, it's really that simple.

The machine comes with a possibility of adding additional software to run G-code files with a post-processor but it's really best suited for 3D carving wood panels and, as such, is much more than just a novelty and good value.

time, the company has advanced from a supplier of CNC drilling machines to one providing complete manufacturing solutions. Their expertise can fit out an entire factory and these are working everywhere in the world from Italy through the USA to China. Yes, even the Chinese use Biesse machines, not their own.

The Biesse stand at AWISA was one of the more impressive and even included an office tower built right there at the stand. Biesse CEO Luke Tenaglia "cut the tape" with Biesse General Manager Stefano Porcellini to open a stand that rivalled their presentation at the recent German Ligna fair.

Biesse showcased a complete range of technology including 5-axis CNC processing; wide belt sanders; edge-banders with Airforce technology; automatic panel storage and retrieval; CNC stone and glass cutting; twin-pusher beam saw and vertical CNC processing centres.

A feature of all the major suppliers is integration and Biesse has made an impact with the bSuite software. Starting with bSolid, you design your product in 3D and simulate the machining process for maximum production efficiency. It's possible to draw entire products to see how the parts fit together.

bSolid is intuitive and learns what you do and how you machine your components to help plan future processing. The parts are displayed on a virtual reality screen showing your own machine, complete with tool change magazine. You can verify the design, machining processes and check for errors

at this early stage. bEdge software reduces design time

for edge-banding processes, bWindows creates and processes windows and door frames and bProcess looks after all your production, linking your machines into a seamless process that allows feedback to your office on job completion in real time. Damaged panels can be scanned and a new one automatically generated. With this system in place your workforce can be optimised because fewer employees can operate more equipment.

Other technology available from Biesse included the award-winning Airforce, Biesse's own system developed to meet the requirements of zero-join edge-banding technology. Biesse also made a big hit this year with its water-jet cutting stone. This technology has been in use for 20 years but not widely used in the furniture and construction industries. Biesse's machine used an impressive 60,000 psi water-jet cutting up to 200mm thickness on almost all known materials. Surprisingly (for me), Biesse claim only 0.5mm deflection at deep cuts up to 200mm. Pretty impressive!

Viet wide-belt sanders and paint sanding machines for gloss surfaces with flat panel (no bumps); Cefla spray equipment; a huge range of edge-banders; a 5-axis machine profiling wooden "crowns" and spiral table-legs and a Selco panel-saw with twin pusher (shown at Ligna last year) rounded out an impressive array of leading-edge technology.

FelderFelder's Stefan Kremer is an industry personality who knows his stuff. At 14

years of age, Stefan worked in the family joinery shop through his school holidays to pay for his first scooter. After his high school certificate and a stint in the army, Stefan became an apprentice saw-miller and worked for a while in West Africa as a timber buyer before moving back to Germany to study at the renowned Rosenheim Institute. His thesis was on making factories faster – workplace planning as he calls it. After a while consulting in Ghana, Stefan moved to South Africa selling Altendorf machines; then Grecon and Weinig where he was asked to come to Australia to manage Weinig here. When the opportunity arose in 2003 to obtain the Felder Group agency for NSW and ACT, Peter Burkitt and Stefan Kremer took it. With a lot of dedication, focus and expertise, Peter and Stefan have built Felder into a strong and reliable company providing the right machines and solutions for clients around Australia and New Zealand.

From a manufacturer of mostly craft-based machines, Felder is now a world-class manufacturer with a complete range of professional woodworking equipment. In 1956, Johann Felder founded the company in Tirol, Austria and in the early 2000's started producing an ever-increasing range of professional machinery. Felder now provides to 72 countries selling over 150 different models. The 5-axis profit H50 machine has an impressive 350mm of vertical travel with all of the features found on any other similar machine. Felder also provides the new ‘laser’ edging technology using the hot air principle and has a machine going into Melbourne in the near future. If my sources are correct, that makes Felder a supplier of 25% of the laser edge market in Australia.

FestoolFestool presented us with some very interesting tools to play with. One that caught my eye (and everyone else's) was the KA 65 Conturo (portable) edge banding unit.

Edging straight surfaces, curves, radii, convex and concave shapes as well as internal corners is easy with the Conturo. Edging can even be attached to mitred edges to an outstanding quality with the stationary unit. It's quick, easy and light-weight to use and clean because it uses a

glue cartridge, it's ideal for shaped parts and small batches and particularly useful for on-site panel repairs. It is suitable for edging all types of wood, plastic or melamine edging with a height of 18 to 65 mm and edge thickness of 0.5 to 3.0 mm.

New stocks are available November this year (they sold out at AWISA) and costs less than $5,000 inclusive of a range of trimming accessories. Other new products are a cordless plunge saw, available in two versions and 18 volt cordless rotary hammer drill that's the lightest tool in its class.

Gabbett Machinery (SCM)The Gabbett stand focussed on what the industry needs and wants. Barry Gabbett said he believed his stand was relevant to 75% of visitors, not the top 10%.

From selling used machinery under the Gabbett family name, Gabbett has risen to represent some of Australia's most popular brands and most useful equipment. SCM has, over the years, bought many of its competitors including Morbidelli (CNC machines); DMC (sanders); Stefai (edge banders) and Gabbiani (beam saws) – all household names in the furniture industry.

The technical expertise of all of these companies have been brought together to strengthen the design and performance of all SCM equipment. This can be seen even with SCM's standard range of woodworking machines. Their surface planer has a neat addition to the squaring fence to allow narrow work to be fed

safely and their outrigger table on the sliding table panel saw can be removed by loosening only one knob. Clever little designs that work for you, the user and remember that all SCM components are made by SCM and there is no manufacturing in China.

This year Gabbett showcased the lower cost of owning a 5-axis machine. In the mid-1980s the furniture industry started to use CNC machines in great numbers. Over the last five years or so, 5-axis machines have dropped in price as machinery makers streamline their production and work with lean manufacturing technologies. Five- axis machining is now a viable option for even the smallest of manufacturers.

Versatility is the key to modern manufacturing, having the ability for your spindle to rotate through 360 degrees using all of your tools opens up more possibilities. The joinery market is one area where 5-axis machines are very popular. Solid timber windows, door components, stairs etc, all with a variety of cut angles and profiles can be done more efficiently with a 5-axis machine.

Set-up time is reduced as complex jig adjustments are not required. All faces can be machined at any angle so multiple set-ups are eliminated. Production times and tool costs are reduced because every tool is held in the one rigid spindle. This gives a higher quality finish with extended tool life. There's no need for expensive aggregate heads costing up to $15,000 each, providing a significant long term saving.

The main advantage of a 5-axis machine is the versatility and flexibility to do all

components, all designs including specials in the time and way that makes it practical and profitable. 5 axis machines have almost no limitations and allow for some amazingly unique furniture. In addition to being great value, the SCM 5-axis Accord 30 fx machine also incorporates some simple to use operator features such as the new Play-Motion portable console, which won the International product design award for 2011.

Hawleys EngineeringHawley's is the Australia and New Zealand agent for "Vecoplan" chippers, shredders and chip handling equipment. The goal is to reduce waste and generate additional income from what you currently throw away. The use of wood as a renewable source of energy is becoming more and more important. Vecoplan contributes to this ecology by effectively shredding input materials with its wood shredders for further processing.

In addition to single-purpose units such as the VAZ 800 chipper, Vecoplan also offers treatment technologies to clean the waste material and produce the necessary output size. Even if the shredded product is worth nothing because it contains glue or nails, at least the waste volume will have been reduced by two-thirds and this means big savings in waste transport and disposal costs.

established numerous innovative ideas in the market. This includes the continuous refinement of edge processing from the world’s first edge banding machine to zero joint technology with laserTec and airTec as well as the control concept powerTouch that enables control over all machine functions by directly touching the display. According to the judges, the distinctive feature of companies as top innovators is that the Top 100 manage to turn their ideas into market success stories in exceptional ways.

Ross Campbell and Stefan Mueller (Homag Germany) presented many new technologies at AWISA. Of particular interest was the company's zero edge-banding joint expertise and Homag can offer a number of solutions. The differences are cost and speed. If you are looking at a low-cost entry system for zero joint edged panels, the Brandt with the Shughoma hot air option would be a good purchase and delivers 15 metres a minute. For something with more speed, around 25 metres a minute, a Homag machine with the airTec system is recommended. For very high speeds of up to 60 metres a minute, only the Homag laserTec can deliver and it's companies like the giant Nobilia Kitchens (Germany), which applies 430 kilometres of edging every DAY that needs this high-speed technology.

Other highlights for the Homag group are 5-axis CNC and open architecture software. All CNC machine manufacturers have reduced the cost of 5-axis machinery due to leaner production methods. Ten years ago five machines in every 100 would be 5-axis. Today this figure is 70 or more machines per hundred. The key drivers are affordability, issues with aggregates and easier programming. And to really make your 5-axis machine sing, Homag's new 3D software (Woodwop 7) ushers in a whole new world of performance. Your programmers currently use contour lines to set the routing paths. Woodwop 7 will be able to calculate the path from a selected 3D surface.

The Homag eSOLUTION is an AutoCAD based software program that combines the power of wood CAD/CAM (design), woodWOP (CNC machine interface), cut-rite (panel saw optimiser) and woodFactory (machines) into one intelligent system.

Homag partners with all major hardware suppliers and their hardware details are in the software. The drilling can be applied by selecting the hardware to be used, no drawing is required by the CAD operator. The software program will say if the parts will fit or not and will intelligently select parts that are used often enough so you won’t even need to select these.

Homag's Bernd Kahnert said: "Software

needs to be flexible, fast and secure". Unlike much of the software that's adapted for wood, the new eSOLUTION software was developed from the wood industries, NOT from an engineering perspective.

Impact CNCSean Strange from Sign Essentials offer a range of machines in either the out-of-the-box Thunder, Tornado and Hurricane higher-spec models. Their machines are capable of nested based manufacturing; general woodworking; sign making (with drag knives); aluminium cutting and cladding. The machines are fitted with a range of quality components including HSD (Biesse) spindles; THK bearings: Panasonic servo motors; Becker pumps and Schneider electrical components.

Based in Brisbane, Impact has been supplying equipment since 1993 and now offers machinery for manufacturers making between two to five kitchens a week. A range of table sizes is available along with a choice of matrix or pod tables, and rack or rotary tool changers.

LedaLeda machinery was 21 last year but Director Bruce Evans is 71 and has been in the industry for 55 years. Starting out as a saw-doctor, Bruce got his hands "dirty" early on and can honestly say he

understands tools better than most. Bruce was on the original AWISA committee with John Cover and John Tiddy. He recalls the Acme machinery days in Flemington and when it fell over during Paul Keating's "recession we had to have" Wood Tech Brisbane was born.

Leda now sells the Excitech flat bed CNC router in two versions – standard and panel-feed. Standard machines are available in three table sizes and multiple zones (machining areas) and tool changers. Three panel-feed models are also available with rotary tool changers on the gantry. All machines come with (Biesse) HSD spindles and Becker pumps.

Excitech makes 2,000 machines a year and there are 10 already in Australia in just eight months of sales. The machine comes complete with a completely new, updated version of the popular 3D kitchen software and with load and unload tables comes in at under $100,000 inclusive of the software. Drop the feed tables for a significant drop in price.

LeitzAlbert Leitz founded the Wurttemberg Wood Boring factory in 1876 in Oberkochen, the German town Leitz still calls home. Amongst its achievements are the first mechanically operated cutting tool; the first cutter set for window production; the first diamond tool for wood and the first tool with a memory chip.

Today, Leitz is one of the leading tool suppliers and a company you can rely on to supply world-leading cutting tools designed for safety, performance and long service life. Recent Leitz developments include making the Whispercut jointing cutter half the weight of the original with the PCD tips being able to be sharpened ten times. Marathon coating of cutting knives reduces the requirement for hard-to-get tungsten carbide and Leitz Duo-Multi-Profile scraping tools improves the finish of edge banded panels.

There's plenty going on at Leitz but one of the more interesting offerings at AWISA was a new connection system for joinery components (sashes). Leitz call it PlugTec and, when tested at the Rosenheim Institute, the joint exceeded (out-rated) all other types of timber joints by a huge margin.

The joint is essentially two slot mortise and tenons machined into the stile and rail of the sash. No dowels are needed, the design prevents twisting and the opposed tenons further strengthen the joint. Aligning the joint is perfect and assembly time is reduced. Using RipTec tools on the flat sections of the joint increase the gluing area and further strengthens the joint. You need a CNC machine to make the joint, but as no additional tooling is required, it's really only a minor change to your manufacturing and assembly processes to achieve significant benefits.

LeucoLeuco is a tool supplier with 60 years experience and is one of the world's largest suppliers of carbide and diamond tipped woodworking tools. Neil Staggs from Leuco Australia presented Supplier Magazine with some interesting new developments. The most recent of these is Leuco's No-Noise panel sizing saw-blade. It's not the first of its kind – that honour goes to AKE, but the Leuco blade represents yet another stage in Leuco's long-time development of low-noise saw-blades.

Page 32: Supplier Sept-Oct 2014

REVIEW

The blade was tested in an Altendorf machine and reported to achieve 74dB, the same level as the spindle running with no blade at all! The new No-Noise DP (diamond-tipped) panel sizing and scoring saw blades were shown for the first time at the Holz-Handwerk trade show in Nuremberg in March this year. The blades are available up to 450mm diameter and in a range of tooth geometries for different applications. A set of two saws for a panel saw will cost around $1,400 and as a comparison, a normal PCD blade will cost around $3,000 – so it’s all good news.

Dust is a problem when routing on a CNC machine. Whether you are cutting melamine faced board in a nesting operation or machining thick solid wood components where the dust collector is high above the work-piece, your machine may have to be cleaned between each machining cycle. Leuco's answer to this issue is the Aerotech turbine and clamping system for router tools. Available in both ISO and HSK types, the device uses a built-in turbine that lifts dust upwards where the dust extraction is more able to take it away.

The device needs to be matched to your machine by a Leuco technician as there are two versions for cutting different materials. The device can be fitted with cutters up to 60mm diameter. Aerotech is a monochuck HSK or ISO type tool. The ISO type is only available in a hydro version and as such is limited to speeds up to 24,000 RPM; the speed of most Australian CNC machines.

An issue with cutting on a 5-axis machine is getting a standard tool into the often complex shapes being produced by the machine. Leuco's solution to this problem is their new extra-long slim collet chuck. With a balance quality of G2.5 and capable of 36,000 RPM, these collet chucks produce excellent surface quality even with a length of up to 124mm on the smallest diameter chuck.

Multicam"Bigger, Faster, Stronger, " was the welcome from Multicam's Stephen Heusz, a long established supplier of Australian made flatbed CNC routers since their first machine in 1984, Multicam is now firmly entrenched in the vocabulary of the woodworking industry.

Multicam was the only Australian-made CNC nesting machine at AWISA and proudly carries the Australian-made logo. Throughout its offices, Multicam shares a wealth of knowledge and experience for machining most materials in a huge range of manufacturing processes.

“From manufacturing kitchens, cabinets and furniture through to engineering and point-of-sale, it is unlikely that a manufacturing challenge cannot be met, or a manufacturing solution cannot be found,” said Stephen Heusz.

Where many of the other brands of CNC routers over the last 30 years have faded or disappeared, Multicam is still a force and an industry leader in CNC flatbed routers and nesting.

Dedicated staff are available to assist users with every person you speak to at Multicam committed to a common goal of supplying the right solution for your specific needs. Remote Internet connection enables diagnostics, training and repairs to be easily provided by the support staff

Multicam offers a range of customised software to get new companies up and running quickly and of course supports

all industry standard software products offered by other third-party software companies.

The company also realises that quick service and support is paramount to their clients and it is for this reason that service is as important to Multicam as it is to the user. And of course, Multicam CNC routers are manufactured here in Australia meaning that stock is always on hand.

Recycling Technologies GroupThese days it's more important than ever to get the most out of your manufacturing. That includes getting the maximum benefit from your waste. Why throw it away when it can be worth big dollars. To achieve a total waste solution, RTG team up with some of the world's best quality recycling equipment producers to design and build a system that not only takes care of your waste and returns a profit, but pays for itself in a very short time.

RTG supplies the entire system technology to configure bunker, conveyor and storage technologies according to customer requirements in the areas of wood preparation, large wood shredders, biomass heating power plants, saw mills, used timber recycling and pelletizing plants. Launceston Kitchen Centre now has a cleaner factory, less waste transport costs and a significant time saving. Boral

Timber Sawmill in Murwillumbah installed a conveyor and chipper system that now sends their waste to a boiler to co-power the factory.

Just because it's waste doesn't mean it's not worth anything.

Tuckwell MachineryTuckwell Machinery has been supplying woodworking machinery to the Australian manufacturer for 15 years. Based in Queensland, Tuckwell sees service as one of the more important purchasing needs and Mark and Patrick strive to be the best in the business.

Tuckwell has a large range of machinery on offer and their brands include Cosmec (CNC machining); Fravol (edge banders); Hirzt (CNC drilling); Casolin panel saws and Technica CNC machines. The Tecnica vertical CNC machine was released for the first time in Australia. There are currently 200 of these flat bed (nesting) or pod table machining centres working in Europe. The pod and rail version can work five sides of the panel, their only drawback is that any cut-outs need to be "machined to dust" as the off-cut may fall down onto the cutting tools.

This is the case for all of these vertical CNC machines but there are benefits with a machine of this type. These are that the surface of the work is always clean of sawdust, the operator position is much more ergonomic and the floor space is

half that of a traditional CNC machine. The Casolin Astra 400 panel saw comes

in under $40,000 and includes three NC controlled movements including tilting of the spindle plus or minus 46 degrees. The parallelogram fence is manufactured with chrome bars and steel bearings in swing arm, no nylon parts there. With a Leuco shim-less scoring saw and centralised lubrication system, the Astra is worth a look at this price.

Weinig / Holz HerThe Holz-Her name is not new to Australia and has been represented at previous AWISA fairs by various suppliers. Holz-Her was founded in 1914 and is now 100 years old. Weinig bought the Holz-Her Brand in 2010 and is now well placed to offer complete solutions in both the solid wood and flat panel sectors.

Last AWISA we saw the Weinig Cube for the first time and it has been widely accepted by those companies who do a lot of planing with static machines. It's proven to be ten times as fast as static machines, much safer and produces a superb finish.

This time Weinig/Holz-Her surprised us with yet another world-first technology. LTRONIC is a patented system using near infra-red radiation technology to soften the inner layer of "laser" edge tapes. It's a direct competitor to the systems that use very hot air to soften the "functional"

REVIEW

WoodTech

inner layer of the tape. Applying this edge to a panel creates the look of a painted panel, something that costs far more to produce. Your customer gets a panel with an invisible edge join – the goal of all edge bander manufacturers.

There are plenty of reasons why you should take a look at the LTRONIC technology. Firstly, it's cheap – it is comparable in (purchase) price to current hot air systems. Second, because it does not use huge amounts of heated air, it's even cheaper because you don't need high-capacity compressors or high heating costs. Third, it's safe because you don't have a (potentially) dangerous laser or very hot surfaces to contend with.

LTRONIC is a noiseless, low-cost, low-maintenance, quick-change, no-wait system that is capable of higher speeds than most hot air systems, but not at high as laser. It's well documented that a laser edge banding system will cost in the vicinity of $300,000 and that makes it prohibitive for all but the largest manufacturers.

Holz-Her has continued with its "quick-change" policy typified by the cartridge edge banding system and the LTRONIC fits in perfectly with their manufacturing philosophy. Production of this technology starts November this year and will be available in Australia February next year. I

thought this innovation was (arguably) the most interesting new product at the show.

Wood TechThe Wood Tech group was founded in Queensland in 1992 by Derek Van Der Kley and John Van Gilst of D&J Woodworking Machinery. The Wood Tech Group directors include industry personalities Neil Foley, Sam and Max Shatkhin and Ron Smyth and has an association with Ian Patterson of I & J Machinery in Western Australia and Richard Van Der Vegte of Prowood Machinery in New Zealand. Their brands include Hebrock and Ott (edge banders); IMA (CNC machine centres and edge banders); Heesemann (wide-belt sanders); Schelling (beam saws) – an almost 100 year old company; Anderson (CNC machines and digital printing); Breton and Vector (CNC machining) and Venjakob (spraying) equipment.

Wood Tech's Hebrock AKV 3006 edge bander was fitted with the new Airtronic hot air system for "laser" edge tapes. While Airtronic works in a similar way as the original Shughoma system, Airtronic only uses about a third of the air, about 400 litres per minute. Compressed air is only used when actually doing the edge: it's not going all the time. The system takes three

to five minutes to heat up (ten minutes to cool down) and is air and power efficient.

The Hebrock machine with Airtronic is reported to run at 10 metres per minute, which is suited to many Australian production requirements. Like all edge banders with a "laser" capability, you can also work with other glue and edge types.

Other technologies available from Wood Tech include the Cojet UV-curable digital flat-bed inkjet printer by Anderson (Andi) that's now four times quicker than the machine that won a Gold Star in 2012. It’s also gone to 1440 dpi resolution so it’s as good as DVD quality. Examples of the printed surfaces were nothing short of stunning, with some effects coming close to the feel of real wood.

The IMA advantage 400 edge bander now has patented servo driven cut off saw with no contact with the work-piece. IMA is a hugely respected German company that is able to guarantee 96.5% reliable run-time on its equipment. Finally, the Schelling beam saw can now do cuts within the board that stop at a given position. This allows a “third phase” cut and provides for

Page 35: Supplier Sept-Oct 2014

Woodtron

the cutting of pieces outside of a normal beam saw cutting pattern.

WoodtronGeoff Sellman should be a household name in the wood processing industry. For many years he was the face of Biesse in Victoria. Thirty two years with Allwood and six with Woodtron, you'd reckon Geoff knew a thing or two about manufacturing. Now with sons Kyle and Luke on board, Geoff is taking Woodtron to new heights. Pretty soon there will be a BMW-style showroom in Melbourne including a training room and a store with $1.5 million of spare parts. And did I mention it's a family business? Of course I did, and for that reason you know you will be getting personalised treatment because your machine is very likely to be discussed at the dinner table. Geoff will look after sales, Kyle is software and logic and Luke is systems, costings and strategy.

Woodtron specialises in flatbed CNC so all their energy goes into its development. The machines are super heavy and to achieve strength in the table, all the usual stuff that hangs under other machinery is put into a dedicated cabinet that's easier to get at and maintain. The wiring is from Germany; the spindles HSD (Biesse) and servo motors from Yaskawa – all quality ingredients.

This AWISA, Woodtron had the very first twin-gantry nesting machine with simultaneous labelling, drilling and routing. Yes, it's all done at the same time and you could at least double your current production. The ‘boys’ are pioneering a remote camera so they can guide you through any minor maintenance from the Melbourne office and I am assured that there is much more new technology on the way including board storage and retrieval systems.

Towards 2016There were many more suppliers at AWISA and we have not the space to write about everything. We've tried to cover the new technology as we saw it. Now is the time to buy as dealers hold new stock from AWISA. You should also look at companies such as Ville-Tec (Peter Vuille-Bille) with quality brands such as Costa (wide belt sanders); Gannomat (drilling, gluing and dowel inserting) to complement your nesting machine; Streibig (wall-saws) and Simpro stackers.

Thatcher Engineering is another well-known and respected supplier with a range of Rhino edge banders, CNC machining centres and hot and cold presses. See Gregory Machinery (QLD) for Laguna and Masterwood flatbed CNC routers and Cehisa (also sold by Altendorf) edge-banders.

There is plenty to be concerned about in the coming months – 40,000 car workers won't be buying kitchens next year ; companies such as Qantas, Virgin Australia, Worley Parsons (mining), Caltex, AGL (aluminium smelters) and Wollongong coal are just some of the companies announcing job losses over the last month or so. No work means no spending and its more important than ever that the woodworking sector gets much smarter about the way we work. Doing more with less and using technology as a production tool instead of labour; should be the way to success. A visit to AWISA 2014 was just the thing to get those ideas working. ●

AWISA brings technology together with software, hardware, materials and products manufacturers need to service today's astute consumer. Much of what was seen at AWISA is so new that it's not yet available in Australia, you are really getting a look into the future.

Let's take a look at some of the exciting and innovative new products presented in Brisbane in alphabetical order.

BlumThe 50-year old Austrian Blum company does 40 shows world-wide every year and the same stand is used at all shows. This means that what you saw in Brisbane was the same as everywhere else in the world of interior design.

At AWISA, for the first time, Blum supported two stands. The main stand provided visitors the opportunity to experience the international award-winning Legrabox, the next generation of Blum drawer systems featuring revolutionary design and functionality with elegantly designed matt, metallic surfaces in 6 colours. With Legrabox, the runner is under the drawer so you get thinner

sides (12.8mm only) and so, more drawer space. Legrabox will be available June 2015.

Other Blum firsts were the prototype Servo-Drive flex for easy electrical opening and closing for fridge doors and dishwashers and their latest wall cabinet solution, Aventos HK-XS small-stay lift for cabinets above refrigerators and larders. Aventos nicely rounds off Blum’s program of lift systems and offers the market design separation and sophistication.

If you were wondering what a well-designed kitchen looked like, the live Dynamic Space demonstrations left you in no doubt. Blum steel drawers are now available with anti-fingerprint surfaces to prevent soiling and Blum electric drive systems are “plug and play” and made simple to set up and install.

Blum's second stand focused on Minipress P and Boxfix E-T assembly devices, along with the interface capability of their Dynalog cabinet planning software with Homag’s CNC machine. This provided exhibition visitors an opportunity to experience Dynalog and a number of devices designed specifically

to support the assembly of Blum products. Visitors picked up the tools and assembled entire drawers thanks to the Boxfix E-T, whilst appreciating “perfect assembly”.

Director of Sales and Marketing, David Noakes explained that Blum's ideology is “Global customer benefits” where every person coming into contact with Blum will benefit from the connection or contact with the business. Blum talk about "perfecting motion" with its partners.

The hardware design boom since year 2,000 is set to continue due to high demand for more efficient and user friendly storage solutions with modern design. Elements such as narrow drawers with opposed hinges (top right and bottom left) to support the drawer where a pair of hinges either side is not possible, and nil protrusion 154 degree hinges to easily replace adjustable shelves and provide wide access to the cabinet.

Briggs VeneersJuel Briggs was on hand at AWISA to promote the use of real veneer from real wood, something she is immensely passionate about.

Briggs began timber production in 1908 with Juel Briggs' great grandfather, followed by veneers in 1934. Briggs now offers 50 natural veneers and related products from (mostly) Australia, Europe and North America, and all from certified and sustainably managed forests. Reconstituted veneers for a more straight grained look with consistent patterns round up the number of Briggs's products to more than 140. The message here is no plastic, all real wood. Briggs offers veneer in leaf and joined lay on form; rotary cut veneer; glue thread and paper tape if you need it.

AWISA materials, software and hardware AWISA is much more than a forum for the latest technology: it is also a Mecca for architects, designers, specifiers, fine woodworkers, interior designers and a host of other professionals from the diverse industry the show services. Philip Ashley reports.

Briggs veneer from sustainable Australian hardwoods was used in the Sydney Olympic village in 2000 after passing strict environmental guidelines. Briggs supplies veneers such as oak, elm, blackbutt and walnut in a range of finishes to Australia and New Zealand. The veneers are exported to America, Europe and Asia. Flameblock fire-retardant MDF is also available with certificates for 180 veneers.

Juel Briggs says quality is important and customers should always ask: “Is it real and from a real tree?” Passion and pride is the catchword with Briggs and, after 100 years of experience, why not?

Cabinets OnlineCabinets online is part-operated by Cameron Cox and Kevin Cavanagh. It's a manufacturing business that deals with other cabinet makers and designers and not the consumer. Based in Brisbane, Cabinets Online use a systems-based approach to their manufacturing to maintain efficiency and quality. Lead-times are guaranteed once specifications are checked for production.

Although the name infers a distance approach, Cabinets Online is actually very customer-focused and Cameron and Kevin would never compete against their own customers. Cabinets can be delivered ready to install, or drilled and ready to assemble.

CabmasterCabmaster is 32 years strong and started in 1982. They claim to be the oldest software in Australia and Cabmaster's original software developer, Dave Blatt is still with the company.

The software is available in several levels so you buy what you need and, as you advance, you can purchase more options. The base level allows drag and drop from a library with the ability to modify every part. Level 2 adds reports and cutting lists. Level 3 adds a panel optimiser. Other modules include machining (basic, plus and premium), Robemaster (wardrobe design) and Doormaster, regarded as one of the best door producing programs you can get. Ezynest allows nesting patters to be created. The nesting and cutting is integrated into the main program, there is no saving and recalling filed in another program or module.

Cabmaster is exported to Brazil, USA, Canada, China etc and modified for their use. This means that it's also translated into several other languages. Most "foreign" software is developed overseas and adapted to our way of working. What would you prefer?

In the latest release for AWISA, Cabmaster version 8.2 includes Photo-View and Machining-View for true shape nesting and labelling.

CDK StoneHow difficult is it to quickly and accurately measure for a kitchen? All you get for your time are scribbled measurements that you later need to enter into a computer CAD program. CDK Stone

now offers the LT-2D3D laser device to accurately measure room spaces in either 2D or 3D formats. It comes with a windows tablet and touch pen to enter data from the laser.

At $19,000 its very rugged and in its hard case, can ship in airline luggage!

Point to any position and insert all dimensions to create a complete 3D view of the job including backsplashes and ceilings, even adding cook-tops, sinks etc from the built-in library. Using the tablet, you capture all the information about the job including addresses, notes, photos (you can notarise these) and even a signed contract with the customer.

This very handy tool is made in the USA and, in addition to interior spaces, is used on awnings, swimming pools and movie sets. With 1mm accuracy over 30 metres, your quotes will be accurate, your errors will be a thing of the past and in one visit you will have all the information you need.

Häfele Häfele, along with a host of other design-oriented suppliers, occupied Hall 3 of the Brisbane Convention Centre at AWISA. The team at Häfele look at the way their product will improve your furniture and cabinets so their motto for AWISA was "Thinking ahead."

The presentation at AWISA was in two parts, the first being Häfele product in its raw form while the second was a "Grand kitchen" to show the products coming together in harmony.

Häfele has a commitment to its customers so feedback allows them to produce a range of products that meet current and emerging market demands.

Hettich

Page 38: Supplier Sept-Oct 2014

www.suppliermagazine.com.au

This year's highlight products included the Slido sliding and folding fittings for both glass and timber doors; Lift and turn overhead flap fittings; Loox LED lighting technology and a decorative hardware display.

Häfele partners Grass drawers and hinges; Kessebohmer storage solutions; Salice hinges and drawer runners are all household names and joined Häfele at AWISA. Linak was also able to show its electronic lifting system for island benches at the Häfele stand.

Häfele has moved into the arena of interior design and the emotive emphasis of the modern consumer and home/business occupier. The company targets the end-user, not the cabinetmaker and, in so doing, aims to provide a range of design-oriented hardware for greater convenience and comfort.

HettichIn 1888 Karl Hettich mechanised the production of components for Black Forest cuckoo clocks. When August Hettich developed a production line for piano hinges in 1928, he set a course for the group's present activities in the furniture industry.

In 1930 Paul, August and Franz Hettich set up a new company in Herford, a move which was seen as a gamble but the shift took the brothers to the heart of the German furniture industry alongside some of the world's biggest kitchen companies such as Poggenpohl.

The company is still owned by the Hettich family and, with Dr. Andreas Hettich taking over in 2007, the company's management entered its fourth generation. Today, Hettich is one of the world's leading suppliers of furniture hardware with an annual turnover of a billion dollars.

In Brisbane, Hettich presented highlights under its "Slide it. Love it." banner with the launch of new sliding door systems that meet exacting demands on design for purist-style furniture. The new products cater to modern trends where sliding doors make excellent use of space and provide ergonomic and unobstructed access. The Hettich InLine XL is a door system that pops forward before sliding to provide a seamless front look. No handles are required and the design allows up to four metres of wardrobe or cabinet with a silent opening and close.

Products from the drawer and hinge segments were also the focus of the AWISA presentation. Design, functionality and ergonomics define innovations made to several Hettich products. Corene Roberts and Steve Bradley were particularly excited about the Sensys 165-degree hinge that gives cabinet doors a wide opening and allows easy access for adjustable shelving. Other hinges have a wide opening but the piston on Sensys acts in the range of five to 40 degrees temperature so it suits Australian conditions perfectly. In addition, the hinge starts its closing action from 35 degrees, a very wide angle which makes doors fitted with the Sensys very convenient to close. Sensys has just been released and its available next year.

The ArciTech drawer system gets a new "push to open" silent function that impresses with narrow gaps between drawer fronts and an excellent opening distance. It provides for a design without handles that has previously only been possible with electro-mechanical systems. In most cases, the generous self-opening distance is all that is needed to access the drawer, a feature that's especially useful if your hands are full. The drawer silently closes again and automatically re-loads the "push to open" mechanism.

Hodge SystemsHodge Systems supply Tambortech doors designed to "reveal the space, conceal the clutter" according to their own catchy slogan and revealed at AWISA with a full kitchen display. It's a very clever way of having all your appliances within easy reach and simply accessing them by raising either a manual or electronically-controlled roller door. They can be used for bench-top and splashback pantries, appliance cupboards and breakfast bar units. It's an extremely functional use of space with a huge range of designer options including aluminium, laminate, painted, solid timber or veneer, or acrylic materials.

Kitchen KingKitchen King is the market leader in bin design in New Zealand. Father and daughter team Allen and Jamie Bertelsen have, for 10 years, been making an impact with their Hideaway Bins in the Australasian marketplace. The shining star at the recent AWISA was the innovative

laundry hamper which is not only the best solution to a tidy laundry, which gets a Yes vote from every customer, but it’s an excellent opportunity to “add on”.

A member of NKBA, Hideaway Bins by Kitchen King are intelligent, ergonomically designed and innovative waste systems. The soft-close range was introduced in July 2008 to fill a perceived gap for quality bins that could be used not only for waste in the kitchen, but for any other domestic or commercial use where a hide-away bin was the best storage solution. What separates this product from most others is that the bin is designed to be installed at bench height to eliminate bending. The bin range features Clinikill powder coated lids for hygiene; friction fitted lids for odour control and a patented vent system that allows air to escape and maximises the bin's capacity.

Lincoln SentryEstablished in Brisbane in 1986, Lincoln Sentry has grown into one of Australia's leading suppliers of hardware to the cabinet, furniture, joinery and glazing industries with 25 distribution centres around Australia. Their products are unique in that it's supplied to a wide range of industries in both residential and commercial applications. At AWISA one of their two stands was built like a whole house with kitchen, bedroom, walk-in robe, bathroom and laundry. The kitchen was built by local kitchen designer Kim Duffin and featured a hidden sink with an electronic moving top from Linak. A backlit stone benchtop with Linak rise and fall system, new Hera lighting and fitted out with Blum Servo-Drive electronic opening doors and drawers really showed what is possible in the modern home.

released Finista slim shelving and storage system; new handle profiles; new Peka storage components; Hera concept lighting systems; Italian-designed door winch systems and Alsert doors featuring perforated aluminium in-fills.

A smaller stand educated customers on the Lamello Clamex P joining systems. An open house held at the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) brought together customers and industry professionals to create conversation and feedback on Lincoln Sentry products.

LinakLinak is a world-leader in electric linear actuator systems and services medical, business, machinery, consumer bedding and network automation. Their stand at AWISA was enhanced by displays of cabinet lifting technology on the Häfele stand where you could get a real sense of the value of an elevating workspace.

Mitch Farrell was able to explain the value of ergonomics to the end user and I can see that in situations where there are multiple users of a workspace, be it a kitchen or medical application, for example, the ability to raise and lower cabinets by 100mm covering 90% of the population, makes a lot of difference. The product was released at the Stockholm Furniture Fair three months ago and is now available in Australia.

Linak products have the ability to improve the life of the user. The modern office is more than a work area – it's a living space. After all, you could spend up to eight hours a day sitting in the one position and that isn't good. Professor Ingo Frobose of the German Sports University in Cologne says that: "Health and well-being will be increased when activity has a high priority." Linak "sit-stand" technology

creates an environment where office workers spines are exercised through differing postures – sort of an extension on the lunch-time walk. A recent visit to my doctor revealed that standing uses twice as many calories as sitting, so an elevating desk-top has the potential to reduce the pot-belly evident in some mature office workers.

New Age VeneersAn Australian owned and operated company for over 30 years, New Age Veneers specialises in the supply of timber veneers and premium decorative surfaces for residential and commercial interiors. This local and international product is ecologically sustainable and features a stunning selection of wood-grains, textures and colours.

NAV offers competitive pricing with 24-hour service and the re-developed website allows a look at the product in large-scale. The stand at AWISA was visually oriented and contained real examples of the use of veneer.

NAV products include Enviroven traditional wood-grains and innovative designs. The veneers are reconstructed for consistency of colour, tone and grain across each panel. Timbers sourced from European or African locations meet NAV's strict forest management practices and are laid on a substrate of your choice using E1 certified urea glues and water-based dyes.

Navlam is another veneer product that is laid on a laminate back (hence the name) and finished with two-pack polyurethane to provide a resilient, scratch-free surface. The new Navurban challenges the traditional timber look with an Olefin

finish delivering an embossed surface texture. The surface is highly resistant to scratches and staining and offers excellent UV stability.

PlanitPlanit has been in business 30 years and has 6,000 installations in Australia and 40,000 worldwide. They should know what they're doing. The Planit software links to all machines and the company will service any new equipment in the future.

There are 86 combinations of software from Planit so there's something to satisfy anyone's needs. Planit is screen to machine in one program, no saving and opening another program to do the optimising. An issue with software and one that I have had personal problems with is back-up support. Support is a key consideration with Planit and this company takes pains to make sure this is provided. Free monthly sessions are provided in each State for users to attend and keep up to date, or even to develop new cabinets and solutions with someone from Planit there to help them.

Planit is the seller of Cabinet Vision that allows you to develop designs using plan and elevation views, then generate cutting lists and connect to your own brand of CNC machine. You can also produce high-quality 3D images of the designs to help you sell to your customers. Planit's Screen to Machine (S2M) software nests, optimises and generates machine code for beam saws, routers and machining centres with "convergence technology" that intelligently sorts parts for each machine in batches to release jobs to machines in a proper time sequence.

At AWISA, Planit released the Vortek Augmented Reality Interaction system allowing customers to stand in front of their new (designed) kitchen and see what it looks like from a 3D perspective. It's a marketing tool selling for around $30,000 but would really seal the deal with customers able to take control of what they really want in a kitchen. Used in the USA and already shown at designEX in Sydney and Melbourne, this product has seen massive interest. Vortek allows customers to move in a virtual-reality environment, choosing colours and finishes in kitchens and bathrooms, offices, homes and architectural situations. 3D displays are on the way and the system is available from Planit very soon.

PolytecPolytec is a manufacturer and distributor of premium decorative surfaces and cabinet doors. The company is owned by Borg and sites in Somersby, Charmhaven and Oberon use the highest level of technology to produce a huge range of products using certified and renewable forest products.

Marylou Paino is Polytec's interior designer involved in the development of new products that excite and inspire interior design. At AWISA, Polytec presented some stunning show-stopping materials in concrete and rust finishes for vertical applications and curved surfaces.

Another dazzling Polytec innovation was a unique oak and colour combination in a range of nine amazing colours with no black or white elements. It has a see-through clarity while maintaining the timber appearance. The Ravine collection from Saffron through Peacock, Carmine and Aegean will highlight kitchens and bathrooms with a splash of sophisticated colour and set designer's juices flowing.

Polytec is Australia's fastest growing decorative surface manufacturer with 17 distribution centres nationally. They have been thermo-laminating doors and panels for more than 20 years in hundreds of profiles and surfaces.

Slice VeneersSlice Veneers is run by 77-year old Greg Letho. It turns out that I worked for the same company as Greg, some 47 years ago. Greg star ted out as a coachbuilder but changed to cabinet making. After a stint as foreman, Greg star ted out on his own with Timbermatic making solid timber doors and kitchens. Pumping out eight kitchens a week (many solid timber) for 30 years, Greg knows a thing or two about wood.

Greg now supplies form wrapped doors with 2.5mm radius corners without any long or cross grain splitting at all. The veneers are impregnated fleece-backed to give this durability and flexibility. This also stops glue from coming through the veneer, a problem for other types of veneer laying.

Flooring, floating shelves; acoustic wall and ceiling panelling (all veneered) and veneered noise absorption panels are some of Slice Veneer's extensive and sophisticated product line-up.

SurtecoIn the world of panel there's no bigger talking point than the new "laser" edging technology. This can be applied either by laser (of course) and plasma (not widely used anymore) and also by hot air and more recently, infra-red radiation. It all sounds very high-tech but, put simply, you heat up the inside of the "laser" edge and press it onto the board.

Until now, the edge material had to be imported and as so few manufacturers

were using it. There were minimum orders and this meant that not much variety could be stocked due to the very high costs. This has probably stopped many people from seriously looking at the new edge technology.

The good news is that laser edging is now produced in Australia by Surteco and the edge material is branded Dollken. Fusion (laser edge) tape will be a bigger requirement but for now, there are limited machines in use in Australia.

Surteco stands for Surface Technology Corporation. The company is more known for its edgings but is now focussed on surfaces as well.

Managing Director Max Betzler said: "It’s German technology with Italian design", and that "Surteco has no less than 48 designers working on new products".

Surteco has vinyls on the Queen Mary cruise liner and, in fact, supplies 65% of the vinyl to the world’s shipping, motor homes and caravans. Surteco is not just an accessory company but one of design and innovation.

Now made in Australia, Surteco will have 25 or so main colours and other colours made to order with an attractive purchasing solution. The company has 830 standard edging designs in stock. Surteco can even supply the Dollken edge tape with your own digitally printed surface be it a landscape, children’s comic or your own special design.

Titus TekformA subsidiary of the UK based Titus group, Titus Tekform distributes hinges, drawer systems and organisers, bin systems, edge tape, doors and panels from centres in Queensland, NSW and Victoria.

If you've heard the name Tekform before, it's because Titus bought out the Australian Tekform group in April this year. At AWISA, Titus Tekform displayed its new add-on hinge damper that provides a "confident close" of cabinet and furniture doors. The damper is claimed to dampen doors closed at any speed and available in short and long stroke for a variety of home uses. With the ST-i2 series hinge, the damper is integrated into the hinge cup.

Wilson and BradleyGraham and Lorna Wilson and John Bradley formed Wilbrad in 1976 and the national distributor is still operated by the family.

Wilson and Bradley's website, launched at the last AWISA, has now gone mobile. Customers will now be able to use the popular mobile phone and tablet site to place orders including complete Blum drawer kits. Online videos are available to assist with installation instructions.

Wilson and Bradley is a family owned company with outlets in every state. Their best selling product includes Blum Tandembox drawer sides and Blumotion cabinet hinges; Consolidated Veneers edge tape; Wesco kitchen waste bins and Tensorgrip contact adhesive canister and spray kits.

3D KitchenChris and Harley Adams were on hand at the Leda Machinery stand to demonstrate the new modular 3D Kitchen design and manufacturing software.

Fully re-designed using professional software designers from several

countries, this popular design program is now included with all purchases of Leda’s Excitech CNC nesting machines. The software has also been supplied to Geoff Sellman's Woodtron nesting machines in NSW.

3D has always been an excellent design to manufacturing program. I bought several licences for Holmesglen TAFE so I know how easy it is to use, but now it's a fully functional 3D design platform.

As well as cutting lists for panels, you also get a list of all the hardware required for the job and the labour content is broken down into workshop areas you understand. Any issues anyone may have had about the software missing a few of the expensive "trimmings" should now be dispelled.

Other exhibitorsOther exhibitors at AWISA included Millsom Hoists – supplying vacuum lifters for all types of material lifting solutions.

Millsom also supplies vacuum clamping components for most CNC equipment.

Quinn Global showed us its "ensor-grip contact adhesive spray system that's eco-friendly with a fast, airless spray for use everywhere a contact adhesive is required.

Pytha wowed (again) with its 3D CAD system for interior design and shop fitting while TopSolid Wood CAD-CAM software from Missler was demonstrated through Integrated Joinery Solutions.

Other products included Stefano Orlati designer cabinet hardware; Ultraglaze panels by Form-Tek; PaletteCAD design and manufacturing software from IDACS; the 65-year old Oliveri Australian-made sinks; and Admonter European engineered wood floors and panels.

There's so much to see that it's impossible to write about everything here. One thing is for sure, design and innovation is alive and well in Australia and New Zealand. ●

Main image: Biesse draws a crowd at AWISA 2014

Inset: Luke Tenaglia, Chief Executive Officer, Biesse Oceania with Biesse’s Italy-based Executive Director Stefano Porcellini launching the new Biesse brand to market.

Four days of set-up, 70 tonnes of machinery, 1194 m2 of floor space – just a few statistics to describe Biesse's huge effort at AWISA 2014.

Playing a dominant role at the Brisbane show, Biesse Oceania was supported by a contingent of well-credentialed experts from the company’s Italian head office. Biesse Oceania’s CEO Luke Tenaglia said he really appreciated the confidence shown in Biesse’s Oceania operations by the attendance of such a strong group of Italian technical experts and senior executives.

“I most certainly acknowledge the major contribution they made to the success of Biesse’s efforts, customer liaison and sales. It was an extremely busy and worthwhile show.”

“The secret to our success was careful planning, ensuring our brand was well positioned. Our total commitment to this event was seen as a key strategy for Oceania in 2014,” Luke said.

“We selected our show machines with a vision of what would optimise our opportunities at AWISA and I was very proud and humbled by the performance of all our staff – it was a huge collaborative effort – well done.

“It was a great honour to have Biesse’s Italy-based Executive Director Stefano Porcellini supporting Biesse Oceania and assisting to launch the new Biesse brand to market. I am delighted at the results

and look forward to closing this financial year from a position of strength and growth,” he continued.

Visitors and customers to the Biesse stand at the show were able to view the latest Biesse innovations and experience live demonstrations including the fully automatic labelling flat bed nesting machines, 5-axis CNC machining centre, wide belt sanders and a truly automatic spraying system.

The rear loading Twin Pusher, which has an exclusive patent for all Biesse panel saws, was a show stopper. Also drawing much attention were the Biesse edgebanders, some which featured the award-winning no glue line Air Force system. Many people stopped to talked about the vertical drilling and routing machines and the Winstore integrated board storage and handling system.

The Intermac CNC stone and the latest waterjet technology for glass were highlighted. This technology struck a chord with kitchen manufacturers and joinery companies, which saw just how easy it would be to expand their business and produce kitchen benchtops and glass splashbacks.

Mr Porcellini confirmed that historically Australia and New Zealand have been a major market for Biesse. “We have been delighted that both these countries have consistently had one of the highest market shares in the world.”

Luke Tenaglia said customer relationships are everything to the Biesse Group. “We have really focussed our energies on delivery and improving our technical support, spare parts immediate response and customer support to provide the reliability and support our customers want and deserve.”

He said globally Biesse was placing particular emphasis on technical support with half of the company’s personnel dedicated solely to service and customer care. “We believe it makes a difference, together with our renewed focus on machine service, spare parts, manufacturing processes and software support.

“This event was a great success and proved to be ideal for us to showcase our new company, unveil our new look and brand marketing strategy and introduce several new key pieces of equipment that were very well received.” ●

Kaeser Compressors Australia showcased a range of its compact and powerful air compressors at the recent AWISA 2014 exhibition. This included the compact SK and ASK series of rotary screw compressors, which deliver maximum performance and optimise energy efficiency.

SK Series: More air for your moneyFeaturing energy-saving Sigma Profile airend rotors and the internal Sigma Control 2 compressor controller as standard, the latest generation of SK series rotary screw compressors from Kaeser meets both of these requirements. Additionally, the new models offer significantly increased free air delivery and even greater efficiency.

The new models are able to deliver up to 2.5 m3 of compressed air per minute at eight bar (11 and 15 kW versions) thanks to airend optimisation and the minimisation of internal pressure losses, which represents an increase of up to 14% on previous models. In turn, these improvements have led to a reduction in specific power by up to 5%. The use of premium efficiency IE3 electrical motors, which comply with and exceed prevailing Australian MEPS regulations for three phase electric motors, has also contributed to additional energy savings.

All SK series models share a logical and user-friendly design, which ensures best possible access to all service points for ease of maintenance. When closed, the sound-absorbing compressor enclosure panels keep operational sound levels to a minimum for a pleasantly quiet work environment.

When an ‘all-in-one’ compact compressed air system is required, Kaeser presents the SK Aircenter series. The space-saving combination of a compressor, refrigeration dryer and air receiver provides dependable and efficient compressed air production, treatment and storage within a single unit. These versatile packages can also be equipped with air filters as required and provide the ideal choice for smaller workshops where space is at a premium.

ASK Series: Powerhouses of efficiencyCompact and refined but with plenty of power, the new generation ASK series rotary screw compressors not only deliver more compressed air with more savings, but also impress with their user- and service-friendly design.

Impressive performance is achieved through continued airend development, fur ther optimisation of the Sigma Profile rotors, an innovative cooling concept as well as low speed operation.

Compared with previous models, these enhancements have enabled free air delivery to be increased by as much as 16%.

At the heart of every ASK system lies a premium quality airend featuring the Kaeser Sigma Profile rotors. Operating at low speed, these are equipped with flow-optimised rotors for superior efficiency. In addition, the integrated Sigma Control 2 controller ensures efficient and intuitive control, while the energy-saving IE3 motor (which complies with, and exceeds, prevailing Australian MEPS regulations for three phase electric motors) – keeps associated energy costs to a minimum.

Driven by an independent motor, the energy saving radial fan in the ASK series rotary screw compressors ensures low compressed air discharge temperatures and provides greater cooling performance with lower energy requirement.

Their logical, user-friendly design allows all maintenance parts to be conveniently accessed from one side for easy servicing. Moreover, when closed, the enclosure with its sound-dampening insulation, ensures quiet and unobtrusive operation. Impressively compact, they are a the perfect choice for applications where space is at a premium. ●

Häfele was overjoyed with the turnout of over 4000 people checking in to see what was said to be its best stand yet at AWISA 2014. The theme this year was ‘Thinking ahead’ and, over the four day exhibition, Häfele chose a unique way to deliver a big impact.

Over an area of 288m2, the front section of the stand focussed on running a series of technology-based display pods. Visitors were able to see new innovations first hand from European heavyweights

such as Grass, Kesseböhmer, Hailo, Salice and Linak.

The cubist drawer system, Vionaro along with the Tiomos hinge system from Grass were a great hit. The sequential louvre overhead system – Climber from Kesseböhmer – did nothing but impress and an array of fittings from Salice – the Futura runners and Lapis hinge fittings – were in operation among many other featured products that are new to the Australian market.

Presenting the latest trends from Europe in this setting allowed visitors to drill deeper into product specific benefits without the distraction of a fully operational display.

This area was followed by a purpose built Grand Kitchen. Decorative herb gardens and fresh bread may have set the scene, but there was an audible gasp from the crowd as Häfele debuted the real stars of the exhibition. In fact, it’s not an understatement to say that electronic fittings by the likes of Häfele’s own Lift + Turn e-senso, Linak actuators – presented in a drop-down cabinetry system and Climber from Kesseböhmer were welcomed most enthusiastically by all. ●

Polytec marked its 25 year history at AWISA and launched three products: the Ravine Collection of Coloured Oaks, imi-beton Flex and Imi-rost.

The polytec-designed exhibition stand and timeless ‘50s inspired hues of the Ravine Oaks, by designer Marylou Paino, was a celebration of material innovation and showcased how its creative application can produce a unique project.

On the back of the festive atmosphere and bright colours that

were associated with the 2014 FIFA World Cup, a Brazilian inspired party theme, complete with cuisine and entertainment, cleverly set the stage for telling the polytec story.

The Ravine Collection of Coloured Oaks was featured in strip form at the stand entrance, with a dazzling custom designed pendant lighting overhead made from matching edge tape. Visitors were encouraged to explore how vivid colour can be introduced into the everyday without taking over.

Casual small tables clad in the Ravine Coloured Oaks provided opportunities for gathering and discussing polytec’s development and advancements over time, which were presented inside a commanding, rotating suspended drum in the centre of the space. The vessel’s cladding in concrete-style imi-beton Flex 2mm, drilled home the product’s flexibility while Imi-rost expressed polytec’s 25 years on the drum’s exterior with special effect.

Likewise, the pliable imi-plus Flex concrete-style benchtop atop the rear bar gained due attention. Bookending the stand either side were two identical six metre wide black wall sections, which projected polytec’s entire merchandise offer on individual boards.. ●

Solu has developed its floating shelf system to finally make it easy to fabricate and install strong floating shelves into any application.

The track is screwed to the wall at any point along the rail. This ensures you hit the right anchor point every time. The tilt adjustable arms are then placed on, locked into place and adjusted to level. A hollow shelf (min 50mm) then just slides onto the arms, finished off with just a dot of silicon to hold it in place.

Solu recommends leaving the track exposed. This makes the installation even easier as the shelf does not need to

be scribed on-site. This system is extra strong holding over 12.5kg per arm and is available up to 3.6 meters in length.

Custom shelfSolu can also make a complete shelf in raw MR to any required length from 600mm to 3.6metres. The shelf will be 250mm in depth by 50mm thick. All you need to do is finish it with paint or laminate.

LegsSolu is expanding its already extensive range of adjustable stainless steel, aluminum and black powder coated furniture legs. The range comes in a huge variety of sizes perfect for kitchens, bathrooms and commercial applications. They are also suited to all outdoor areas, even in coastal regions.

Finger recessOne of its simplest and most popular products, Solu’s finger recess creates a well finished edge that acts as a finger pull in overhead cabinets in kitchens and office application.

ShadowlineThe 42mm ‘C’ Section shadowline is particularly popular as it is incorporated into the construction and not the drawer or door front. Replacing the 2x1 rail in the cabinets it has a staggering array of clips and fasteners available for any application – it can even go around corners.

Profile handlesSolu Hardware has profile handles that are fitted to the door and drawer fronts to create the same look. Each range of profile handles comes in a set of three pieces making it easy to continue the line through pantry doors. ●

DecoSplash is a revolutionary new idea whereby you can have any design or image applied to a splashback.

DecoSplash is made using a two millimetre aluminium plate onto which a durable polyurethane powder coating is applied. The images are transferred directly into the powder coating using

heat and pressure – sublimation. Sublimation is different to printing in that the sublimated image penetrates the full depth of the powder coating.

There are many benefits to using aluminium as a splashback material:* aluminium is a very good conductor

of heat, so any heat from cooktops is quickly and evenly dissipated;

* aluminium is metal and is ‘non combustible’, which means that it can be used safely directly behind a gas cooktop;

* aluminium is light and strong and can be trimmed on site or holes cut for power points using a jig saw;

* aluminium is quick to install simply by using double sided tape and silicone or construction adhesive. However, the big feature of DecoSplash

is that the splashback can now be a design feature in the kitchen. Any design, pattern or photograph can be accurately sublimated directly into the powder coating, providing an endless range of design options.

DecoSplash is available in standard sheet sizes or can be cut to size. ●

The focus on the Gabbett group AWISA 2014 stand was on practical, relevant demonstrations.

“While there are many high end, complex, expensive systems on display at the show, we decided to come at it from a different angle,” said Lee Gabbett of Gabbett Machinery

“Our focus at AWISA 2014 was on displaying automation systems for every manufacturer – not just the top 1% who need to pump out 100 kitchens a week.”

5 axis CNC machining “With that in mind, the SCM group’s new Accord five axis technology is now the most accessible on the market,” commented Lee.

“At AWISA 2014 we demonstrated some complex machining with our 3D racecar demonstrations. It’s popular with the crowd, but also demonstrates what can be achieved with this technology. As testament to this the SCM Accord 5 axis was awarded a Supplier Woodworking magazine Gold Star as one of the most innovative products at the exhibition.”

Nesting machines & design softwareOne of the most popular areas on the Gabbett Group stand was the XCAB nesting software demonstrations. Paul Edmunds, the nesting machine manager, explained: “We’ve designed a software that links seamlessly to the SCM product range – and kept the operation and user interface as simple as possible.

“It’s very easy to go from designing a kitchen on screen, down to the nesting machine, then on to assembly – XCAB nesting software really simplifies the nesting process.”

The XCAB software was teamed up with another new product release – the Pratika range of nesting machines. Small footprint, HSK toolholders, automatic toolchanging, dedicated drilling head, oversized vacuum pump, aluminium table and a heap of safety features make this the ideal machine for many cabinetmakers – so much so that AWISA saw the Australiasian stock of machines run out, with forward orders now being taken.

The Ferrari for your workshopSCM group is famous for its standard machine range – panel saws, thicknessers, planers and spindle moulders.

This reputation is well deserved based on the latest release of the L’invincible range. Renowned for its Italian engineering and styling, these solid, robust machines are designed to work day in and day out.

“Featuring a new design, upgraded control systems and increase safety systems the L’invincible range is again leading the race,” said Lee ●

The Hodge Systems display at AWISA was a combined presentation of Alsert Doors and Tambortech products providing a clever showcase of versatile storage and functional design.

Visitors were drawn to a kitchen with a beverage/appliance cupboard with full height Tambour door and swing handle; a splashback pantry incorporating a brushed stainless finish aluminium tambour door and narrow framed aluminium doors and drawer fronts with white glass inserts throughout. These included two sets of bi-fold doors featuring matching aluminium frames with digitally printed glass inserts all incorporating a new integrated handle

Alternative benchtop pantries were shown as other options for the splashback

pantry in the main kitchen. One alternative was a full size benchtop pantry with an electric motor – one touch to open or close.

The Tambour door, benchtop and aluminium framed door and drawer fronts featured matching laminate. The other alternative featured a smaller benchtop pantry and overhead unit with a gloss steel aluminium Tambour door and aluminium framed doors and drawer fronts to match. For ease of access, a swing handle was added to the Tambour door.

A contrast of black frames and glass with aluminium frames and marble patterned laminate were a highlight of the compact kitchen. Again, the black gloss Tambour door matched the aluminium frames.

All the pantries were fully stocked and illuminated with LED lighting, which accentuated their storage capacity and, by their very design, offer full accessibility and are child proof.

The practical laundry design accentuated a modern “flush look”. Closing the Tambortech door conceals the clutter on the benchtop, laundry tub and the upper storage area. When not in use, the washing machine and dryer are hidden by another full height Tambortech door.

Also on display where sliding aluminium mesh doors completely concealing all visual and audio equipment in an entertainment unit. These doors alleviate heat transmission and provide unhindered operation of remote controls and speakers. Press a button and the electric Tambortech door will cover the TV. Add some alcove shelving and some mood lighting and the room is transformed.

Besides the aluminium framed doors incorporated in the four kitchens on show, many more Alsert doors were displayed on both a tall cube and a wall of doors. The diversity of frames sizes, frame finishes, inserts and hardware applications confirmed the manufacturer’s claim of the most extensive range in the Australian market.

The exceptional quality of the furniture grade aluminium extrusions for both Tambortech doors and Alsert doors was evident and the judicious use of sliding doors and bi-fold doors drew many comments. ●

Manufacturing

When Compak Furniture moved it's production facilities to China it kept the head office in Sydney. The move was made for economic as well as logistical reasons and seen as crucial in order for the company to better service a growing international market.

Unusual for this kind of relocation, the company took its most important machines with them.

Compak Furniture is an Australian manufacturer specialising in developing, designing, producing and marketing modern furniture. From its head office in Sydney, they supply to a global market from production facilities in Shanghai and Fujian in China. Unlike many manufacturers that move part of their facilities off-shore, Compak Furniture

maintains strong links to Australia and Australian manufacturers.

Managing Director of Compak Furniture, Mr John Stibbard, explains some of the history of his company. "Compak Furniture had its beginnings in NSW where we manufactured custom furniture for domestic and commercial clients. Business was good, but our goal was to get into large scale production for retail outlets. From the beginning we knew that, in order to achieve this, we had to offer world class service and products and this meant tooling ourselves up with equipment that would be up to the challenge.

"We knew that computerised machinery was the only way that we were going to be able to achieve our goals, so

we looked to CNC routing machinery for all of our flat panel work," said Stibbard. "To us, reliability and support of the machinery we bought were going to be paramount in our decision making process, so we did extensive research on CNC routing machines.

“In the end, the decision was pretty easy and we chose a Multicam CNC router."

When asked what made the decision easy for him, Stibbard replied: "First and foremost, Multicam machines are purchased directly from the manufacturer, not through a dealer network. This means that support comes straight from the source by people that have a vested interest in providing top level equipment and backup.

“Also, the Multicam routers have a proven track record for reliability, are of superior construction and provided ease of use and safety features that aren't available on other machines. A good example of this is the fully enclosed tool changer where operators are protected from moving parts and sharp tooling.

"The Multicam Routers had proven to be invaluable to our business and were to important an asset to leave behind. The reliability of the machines and the technical support we received from Multicam added to our confidence. The decision has proven to be wise, so much so that a further two Multicam routers have been purchased and shipped to the factories in China.

"We looked at other CNC routers in China but didn't believe they were anywhere near the same caliber as the Multicam router, a view that we still hold." added Stibbard.

''As an Australian based company we are proud to support other Australian companies in taking on the world. The Multicam Routers have been key to our success and the technical support guys at Multicam have been able to assist us directly on the factory floor when we have needed them. The fact that the machines are in China has not proven to be an issue as far as back-up is concerned," concluded Stibbard.●

“Solid timber machining at its best” is how Simon Nanni, Product Manager with Gabbett Machinery, describes the SCM Class thicknessing machines.

‘SCM group have been making thicknessers for over 50 years. Worldwide its

one of their strongest lines’ commented Simon. ‘We were lucky enough to have one on display at AWISA 2014 in Brisbane – which proved to be a crowd favourite’

Being Italian designed and engineered, the machines

look stylish as well as being practical. All the control functions are centralised, with automatic rise and fall, variable feed speed and digital displays being standard.

“But it’s the basics that SCM get right,” said Simon. “A massive, solid cast worktable, which moves on four oversized supports,

give a working platform that is always 100% accurate.”

The table that Simon refers to gives the zero point for any machining that is done on the machine. If it is not constructed correctly, then the machine will never perform correctly. It’s the sort of detail you need to see to appreciate the size and mass of the casting that is used. ●

Business

A simple way to ensure business profitability and healthy cash flow is to focus on what drives both.• What drives revenue needs

to be understood.• How saleable is the product

or service and what is the market?

• What marketing is working and how much is it costing to acquire a customer?

• Is it profitable revenue?• How does the true cost

of the product /service compare with the price?

• Are customers returning and if not why not?One of the biggest missed

opportunities we see in business reports is lumping all revenue into one account and not breaking it down into categories. Breaking down, not only the revenue but the costs associated with each revenue source, enables you to see clearly where you are making and losing money.

Pricing of products and services is vital to profit. To ensure profit it’s vital to know the true cost of the product or service and keep an eye on it, to avoid ‘margin squeeze’, ie allowing costs to rise without increasing prices and absorbing extra cost.

Market forces have an impact on pricing but it’s not viable to continually absorb cost increases without price increases. It’s not always necessary to increase everything.

Example: One client recently told us they hadn’t increased

prices for years. We did some analysis to find out what were their best selling products. On each of these we agreed to a small increase with no resistance from customers. A small regular price increase is much easier to achieve that irregular big ones. Most customers expect a CPI increase and if it’s written into contracts, it’s much easier to achieve.

Costing of products and services is vital knowledge to work out gross profit, which is the difference between revenue and costs and is an important benchmark. Cost of products may include the product, importing, freight, packaging, labour, warehouse, raw materials etc.

Cost of jobs may include: labour, materials, out of pocket expenses etc. If gross profit is below expectations it may be necessary to assess how products and services are costed and acquired.

Example: We had one client in a wholesale business whose packaging was a large portion of costs. When we questioned their ability to negotiate a better price with the supplier, they said it wasn’t possible. We did some shopping around and found a supplier who offered a 10% reduction. The regular supplier soon agreed to a similar reduction.

Labour is another example of cost management on jobs. It’s often the case where chargeable labour spends

time doing non chargeable work such as admin. If you take the number of people and calculate the total hours spent on admin multiplied by their hourly charge out rate, it’s often the case that the cost of employing someone else to do it is less than the missed income.

Overheads can get out of hand where there is no budgetary control. Owners don’t always have time to keep an eye on what everyone is spending, or shop around for the best deal. A budget can be a saver as can giving someone the task of shopping around for better deals on supplies.

One overhead that can get out of hand is wages. Often in a growing business, staff are employed to meet demand without proper job descriptions. An organisational chart can be useful for a growing business. Begin by listing all tasks in the business, then list who currently does them. Any overlaps and gaps should become obvious and job descriptions can be realigned to suit.

Debt collection is an area that has blown out recently. Dunn & Bradstreet recently reported that average collection days were 55.6 days. Compare this to your seven day terms to see what impact this is having on cash flow. Start with Terms of Trade so your customers understand the expectation. Invoice as soon as the product/

service has been delivered or get a deposit or progress payments. Then follow up smartly. Email follow ups for small amounts and phone calls for large amounts. Keep good records of reasons/excuses for late payment and agree to outstanding amounts being paid off in instalments over a period.

Stock and jobs can be a huge drain on cash flow. Think of stock as dollars piled up on the stock room floor and jobs in progress as dollars on the work room floor. It really pays to reduce the time stock sits in store and jobs wait to be finished and invoiced. Good records and planning are vital to management of both. There are some cost effective online systems available that can save thousands of dollars in working capital requirement to fund stock and jobs. . Examples are Unleashed Inventory Software and WorkflowMax Job Management Software, both of which link to Xero Online Accounting Software.

Slowing down payment to suppliers is often the last resort where there’s cash flow problems. Often we see suppliers being paid too quickly or worse being overpaid. A close eye on this area can provide much needed cash.

Product Update

POLYTEC’S new Ravine collection of coloured oaks is designed to offset and complement its popular Ravine timber colour palette.

The sophisticated material is a marketplace innovation that combines the sensitivity and softness of timber oak structure with unique food-dye type colour.

It’s the purity, depth and clarity of colour achieved while maintaining the timber appearance that is the big story.

Nine colours celebrate the timeless classics – 50s brights. The decorative board is 3600 x1800mm (18, 25 or 32mm thickness) and laminate is 3600 x 1200mm.

Spray finish without masking

New metal laminates

MARTIN now delivering spray finish with a paper roll without masking.

MARTIN has started to deliver the innovative spray finish with a paper roll without masking that was launched at the Holz-Handwerk trade fair in Nuremberg.

This speed 20/10 spray table offers a smart, practice oriented and time saving solution for the spray finishing of small as well as large workpieces. Time consuming masking of the workpiece‘s bottom side to protect it from overspray is now a thing of the past.

In order to mask, the workpiece‘s bottom side is simply placed on the paper layer on the table top. For easy removal of the finished workpiece from the coating table, it is pneumatically lifted. The paper is moved over statically neutral plastic rollers. After every finishing job, a new and clean paper surface can be produced within seconds. For easy access to the workpiece, the table can be rotated by 180° during spraying.

The lifting components and the feed of the paper roll are controlled by foot switches. The table is operated completely without an electrical power supply; the movement of the paper is done pneumatically. This ensures a safe use of the table also in explosive environments. The pa-per roll can be changed easily without tools and a brake prevents the roll from unwinding itself and helps to keep it tight.

HIDEAWAY bins are an innovative and easy way to keep mess hidden away within the home.

In the kitchenTo limit bending and movement when preparing food, it is ideal to top-mount a Hideaway Bin at bench height. This way food is prepared on the bench and then moved directly into the bin without bending.

The bin’s framework is made from zinc treated steel for strength, which has been powder coated to make it easy to clean. There are different bucket configurations to choose from, such as a single or double 15, 20 or 40 litre buckets or single 50 litre buckets for the larger family.

The friction-fitted lid, that remains in the cupboard when the bin is open, seals down on top of the bins when the unit is closed. The lid also has a Clinikil anti-bacterial powder coat designed to kill yeast, bacteria and viruses on contact keeping the bin hygienic.

In the bathroomThe integration of a single 15 litre Hideaway bin into the bathroom keeps waste discreet and makes for a more organised hygienic bathroom space. The Hideaway Compact 15 litre unit allows for sink plumbing to be directed behind the bin, allowing more space in other drawers for personals.

In the laundryWith a weight capacity of 52kgs across the runners, the 60 litre Hideaway Laundry Hamper provides a great way to hide laundry, store extra linen or use as a removable washing basket.

It features air vents for ventilation, a solid base to prevent dripping and moulded handles to ensure you can remove the hamper easily. Installing two bins side by side can provide an easy solution for sorting washing as you go.

All Hideaway Bins are New Zealand made and have been designed to fit easily into new or existing cabinetry. They are available throughout Australia through Nover, Hettich and Galvin Hardware.
